| 1 | Tibetan Plateau climate dynamics: recent research progress and outlook显示文摘This paper reviews progress in the study of Tibetan Plateau(TP) climate dynamics over the past decade.Several theoretical frameworks, including thermal adaptation and the TP sensible heat(SH) driving air-pump, have been developed to identify the mechanisms responsible for the circulation anomaly produced by thermal forcing of the TP. Numerical simulations demonstrate that the thermal efects of large-scale orography, including the Tibetan and Iranian Plateaus(TIP), are crucial for the formation of the East Asian and South Asian summer monsoons(SASM) because the surface SH of the TIP is the major driver of the water vapor transport required for the genesis of the north branch of the SASM. he large-scale orography of the TP afects the Asian climate through thermal forcing in spring and summer, and mechanical forcing in winter. he TP forcing can also inluence the Asian summer monsoon(ASM) onset over the Bay of Bengal(BOB) by enhancing the BOB warm pool at the surface and by modulating the South Asian High(SAH) in the upper troposphere. On intra-seasonal timescales, the TP thermal forcing signiicantly modulates spring rainfall in southern China and generates the biweekly oscillation of the SAH in summer. Despite climate warming, the atmospheric heat source over the TP, particularly the spring SH,exhibits a clear weakening trend from the 1980 s to 2000 s. his weakening of the spring SH contributed to the anomalous ‘dry in the north' and ‘wet in the south' rainfall patern observed over East China. | 3 | Vortex genesis over the Bay of Bengal in spring and its role in the onset of the Asian Summer Monsoon显示文摘Physical processes associated with onset of the 1998 Asian summer monsoon were examined in detail using multi-source datasets. We demonstrated that strong ocean-atmosphere-land interaction in the northern Indian Ocean and tropical Asian area during spring is a fundamental factor that induces the genesis and development of a monsoon onset vortex over the Bay of Bengal (BOB), with the vortex in turn triggering onset of the Asian summer monsoon. In spring, strong surface sensible heating over India and the Indochina Peninsula is transferred to the atmosphere, forming prominent in situ cyclonic circulation, with anticyclonic circulations over the Arabian Sea and northern BOB where the ocean receives abundant solar radiation. The corresponding surface winds along the North Indian Ocean coastal areas cause the ocean to produce the in situ offshore currents and upwelling, resulting in sea surface temperature (SST) cooling. With precipitation on the Indochina Peninsula increasing from late April to early May, the offshore current disappears in the eastern BOB or develops into an onshore current, leading to SST increasing. A southwest-northeast oriented spring BOB warm pool with SST >31°C forms in a band from the southeastern Arabian Sea to the eastern BOB. In early May, the Somali cross-equatorial flow forms due to the meridional SST gradient between the two hemispheres, and surface sensible heat over the African land surface. The Somali flow overlaps in phase with the anticyclone over the northern Arabian Sea in the course of its inertial fluctuation along the equator. The convergent cold northerlies on the eastern side of the anticyclone cause the westerly in the inertial trough to increase rapidly, so that enhanced sensible heat is released from the sea surface into the atmosphere. The cyclonic vorticity forced by such sensible heating is superimposed on the inertial trough, leading to its further increase in vorticity strength. Since atmospheric inertial motion is destroyed, the flow deviates from the inertial track in an intensified cyclonic curvature, and then turns northward toward the warm pool in the northern BOB. It therefore converges with the easterly flow on the south side of the anticyclone over the northern BOB, forming a cyclonic circulation center east of Sri Lanka. Co-located with the cyclonic circulation is a generation of atmospheric potential energy, due to lower tropospheric heating by the warm ocean. Eventually the BOB monsoon onset vortex (MOV) is generated east of Sri Lanka. As the MOV migrates northward to the warm pool it develops quickly such that the zonal oriented subtropical high is split over the eastern BOB. | 6 | The Damage Patterns of Retinal Nerve Fiber Layer in Acute and Chronic Intraocular Pressure Elevation in Primary Angle Closure Glaucoma显示文摘Purpose:To observe the differences of damage patterns of retinal nerve fiber layer(RNFL) between acute and chronic intraocular pressure(IOP) elevation in primary angle closure glaucoma.(PACG).using optical coherence tomography(OCT).Methods:Twenty four patients(48 eyes) with unilateral acute PACG(APACG) attack in the 6 months after remission and 36 patients(64 eyes) with chronic PACG(CPACG) were included in this prospective study.For all cases,IOP has been controlled less than 21 mmHg after treatment.Using stratus OCT,the RNFL thickness was assessed in eyes with PACG within 3 days,2 weeks,1,3 and 6 months after IOP controlled.Repeated measures ANOVA was used to examine the time course of changes after IOP controlled in RNFL thickness in both acute attack and unaffected fellow eyes of APACG and eyes with CPACG.Results:The mean RNFL thickness(μm) for the APACG-attacked eyes increased significantly within 3 days.(121.49±23.84).after acute strike and then became thinner along with time.(107.22±24.72 at 2 week,93.58±18.37 at 1 month,84.10±19.89 at 3 months and 78.98±19.17 at 6 months).In APACG-attacked eyes,there were significant differences of average RNFL thickness among 5 different times after IOP was controlled(P<0.001).In the APACG unaffected fellow eyes and CPACG eyes,there were no significant differences in mean RNFL thickness among 5 different times(F=0.450,P=0.104 in APACG unaffected fellow eyes and F=1.558,P=0.200 in CPACG eyes).There was significant difference for interaction between time periods and groups(F=1.912,P= 0.003).Conclusion:RNFL damage patterns are different under different IOP elevated courses.In APACG,RNFL was found to be swollen and thickening right after acute attack and then becomes thinning and atrophy along with the time,while RNFL was found to be diffused thinness in CPACG. | Xing Liu Mei Li Yimin Zhong Hui Xiao Jingjing Huang Zhen Mao | 2011 | Eye Science2011,26,3: | 8 |

| 9 | The Influence of Surgical and Medical Interventions upon Optic Disc Structure in Patients with Primary Open Angle Glaucoma显示文摘Purpose:To evaluate the changes of optic disc parameters in primary open angle glaucoma(POAG)patients after surgical and medical treatment,.and analyze the determinants of these changes.Methods:.A total of 67 patients were enrolled in this study.Thirty nine patients.(40 eyes) underwent trabeculectomy and 28 patients(32 eyes).received intra-ocular pressure(IOP) lowering medical therapy..All subjects underwent bilateral routine ocular examination and Heidelberg retina tomography.(HRT) before treatment and 2 weeks,.1 month,3 months,.6 months and 1 year after treatment..Changes in optic disc parameters in both the surgical and medical groups were analyzed,as was the influence of disease severity and IOP reduction on these changes.Results:.In the surgical group,the average preoperative IOP was 32.8±8.64 mmHg,.which showed a significant decline at each post-operative visit..Most optic disc parameters measured by HRT were significantly improved after trabeculectomy.(P=0.001~0.01),.though the amount of improvement declined gradually during the post-operative period.Rim volume (RV),cup shape measure (CSM),mean RNFL (mRNFL),RNFL cross sectional area (RNFLA) and vertical cup-to-disc ratio (C/D) still remained significantly below the pre-operative mean one year after surgery.In the medical group,the mean IOP before treatment was 24.8±4.32 mmHg and remained < 21 mmHg on all subsequent post-treatment visits.However,no significant changes in optic disc parameters were found after initiation of medical treatment(F=0.52~2.21,P=0.75~0.07).In the surgical group,the extent of reduction of IOP was positively correlated with the improvement in RV,CSM and vertical C/D(r=0.41~0.58,P=0.001~0.04) at one year after trabeculectomy.The absolute value of the mean deviation on visual field testing was negatively correlated with the improvement of RV and CSM (r=-0.43~-0.62,P=0.03~0.001).Conclusion:Improvement in optic disc parameters occurred more commonly after surgical than medical treatment in POAG patients.The amount of reduction of IOP was correlated with the extent of this improvement,which may be more limited in more severe glaucoma. | Hui Xiao Xing Liu Yimin Zhong Zhen Mao | 2011 | Eye Science2011,26,4: | 2 |
| 10 | PV Perspective of Impacts on Downstream Extreme Rainfall Event of a Tibetan Plateau Vortex Collaborating with a Southwest China Vortex显示文摘An extreme rainfall event occurred over the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze Basin(MLY)during the end of June 2016,which was attributable to a Tibetan Plateau(TP)Vortex(TPV)in conjunction with a Southwest China Vortex(SWCV).The physical mechanism for this event was investigated from Potential Vorticity(PV)and omega perspectives based on MERRA-2 reanalysis data.The cyclogenesis of the TPV over the northwestern TP along with the lower-tropospheric SWCV was found to involve a midtropospheric large-scale flow reconfiguration across western and eastern China with the formation of a high-amplitude Rossby wave.Subsequently,the eastward-moving TPV coalesced vertically with the SWCV over the eastern Sichuan Basin due to the positive vertical gradient of the TPV-related PV advection,leading the lower-tropospheric jet associated with moisture transport to intensify greatly and converge over the downstream MLY.The merged TPV−SWCV specially facilitated the upper-tropospheric isentropic-gliding ascending motion over the MLY.With the TPV-embedded mid-tropospheric trough migrating continuously eastward,the almost stagnant SWCV was re-separated from the overlying TPV,forming a more eastward-tilted high-PV configuration to trigger stronger ascending motion including isentropic-gliding,isentropic-displacement,and diabatic heating-related ascending components over the MLY.This led to more intense rainfall.Quantitative PV diagnoses demonstrate that both the coalescence and subsequent re-separation processes of the TPV with the SWCV were largely dominated by horizontal PV advection and PV generation due to vertically nonuniform diabatic heating,as well as the feedback of condensation latent heating on the isentropic-displacement vertical velocity. | Guanshun ZHANG Jiangyu MAO Yimin LIU Guoxiong WU | 2021 | Advances in Atmospheric Sciences2021,38,11: | 2 |

| 12 | Synergistic Effect of the Planetary-scale Disturbance, Typhoon and Meso-β-scale Convective Vortex on the Extremely Intense Rainstorm on 20 July 2021 in Zhengzhou显示文摘On 20 July 2021,northern Henan Province in China experienced catastrophic flooding as a result of an extremely intense rainstorm,with a record-breaking hourly rainfall of 201.9 mm during 0800–0900 UTC and daily accumulated rainfall in Zhengzhou City exceeding 600 mm(“Zhengzhou 7.20 rainstorm”for short).The multi-scale dynamical and thermodynamical mechanisms for this rainstorm are investigated based on station-observed and ERA-5 reanalysis datasets.The backward trajectory tracking shows that the warm,moist air from the northwestern Pacific was mainly transported toward Henan Province by confluent southeasterlies on the northern side of a strong typhoon In-Fa(2021),with the convergent southerlies associated with a weaker typhoon Cempaka(2021)concurrently transporting moisture northward from South China Sea,supporting the rainstorm.In the upper troposphere,two equatorward-intruding potential vorticity(PV)streamers within the planetary-scale wave train were located over northern Henan Province,forming significant divergent flow aloft to induce stronger ascending motion locally.Moreover,the converged moist air was also blocked by the mountains in western Henan Province and forced to rise so that a deep meso-β-scale convective vortex(MβCV)was induced over the west of Zhengzhou City.The PV budget analyses demonstrate that the MβCV development was attributed to the positive feedback between the rainfall-related diabatic heating and high-PV under the strong upward PV advection during the Zhengzhou 7.20 rainstorm.Importantly,the MβCV was forced by upper-level larger-scale westerlies becoming eastward-sloping,which allowed the mixtures of abundant raindrops and hydrometeors to ascend slantwise and accumulate just over Zhengzhou City,resulting in the record-breaking hourly rainfall locally. | Guanshun ZHANG Jiangyu MAO Wei HUA Xiaofei WU Ruizao SUN Ziyu YAN Yimin LIU Guoxiong WU | 2023 | Advances in Atmospheric Sciences2023,40,3: | 1 |
