3Genome survey uncovers the secrets of sex and lifestyle in caterpillar fungus显示文摘The caterpillar fungus Ophiocordyceps sinensis (best known as Cordyceps sinensis) mummifies ghost moth larvae exclusively in Tibetan Plateau alpine ecosystems. Touted as 'Himalayan Viagra', the fungus is highly prized due to its medical benefits and dwindling supplies. Attempts to culture the sexual fruiting-body have failed and the huge market demand has led to severe devastation of local ecosystems and to the fungus heading towards extinction. By genome sequencing, we establish that unlike related insect pathogens O. sinensis contains two compatible mating-type genes in its genome and is self-fertile, i.e. homothallic. However, sexual processes are only initiated under native environmental conditions. O. sinensis resembles biotrophic plant pathogens in having a genome shaped by retrotransposon-driven expansions. The resulting changes in gene content suggest that O. sinensis has a biphasic pathogenic mechanism beginning with stealth pathogenesis in early host instars. O. sinensis is the first psychrophilic fungus sequenced and is adapted to extreme cold with putative antifreeze proteins and mechanisms for increasing lipid accumulation and fatty acid unsaturation. 7Outcomes of furazolidone-and amoxicillin-based quadruple therapy for Helicobacter pylori infection and predictors of failed eradication显示文摘AIM To evaluate the outcomes of furazolidone-and amoxicillin-based quadruple therapy for treatment of Helicobacter pylori(H. pylori) infection and identify predictors of failed eradication.METHODS Patients with H. pylori infection treated with furazolidone, amoxicillin, bismuth, and proton pump inhibitor therapy(January 2015 to December 2015) who received the ^(13)C-urea breath test > 4 wk after treatment were evaluated. Demographic and clinical data including prior H. pylori treatment attempts, medication adherence, alcohol and cigarette consumption during therapy, and treatment-related adverse events were recorded by reviewing medical records and telephone surveys. H. pylori eradication rates for overall and subgroups were evaluated. Multivariate analysis was performed to identify independent predictors of failed H. pylori eradication.RESULTS Of the 992 patients treated and retested for H. pylori infection, the overall eradication rate was 94.5% [95% confidence interval(CI): 94.1%-95.9%]. H. pylori eradication rate of primary therapy was 95.0%(95%CI: 93.5%-96.5%), while that of rescue therapy was 91.3%(95%CI: 86.8%-95.8%). Among the 859 patients who completed the study protocol, 144(17%) reported treatment-related adverse events including 24(3%) leading to premature discontinuation. On multivariate analysis, poor medication adherence [adjusted odds ratio(AOR) = 6.7, 95%CI: 2.8-15.8], two or more previous H. pylori treatments(AOR = 7.4, 95%CI: 2.2-24.9), alcohol consumption during therapy(AOR = 4.4, 95%CI: 1.5-12.3), and possibly smoking during therapy(AOR = 1.9, 95%CI: 0.9-4.3) were associated with failed H. pylori eradication. CONCLUSION Furazolidone-and amoxicillin-based quadruple therapy for H. pylori infection in an area with a high prevalence of clarithromycin resistance demonstrated high eradication rates as primary and rescue therapies with a favorable safety profile. 9Surveillance-response systems: the key to elimination of tropical diseases显示文摘Tropical diseases remain a major cause of morbidity and mortality in developing countries.Although combined health efforts brought about significant improvements over the past 20 years,communities in resource-constrained settings lack the means of strengthening their environment in directions that would provide less favourable conditions for pathogens.Still,the impact of infectious diseases is declining worldwide along with progress made regarding responses to basic health problems and improving health services delivery to the most vulnerable populations.The London Declaration on Neglected Tropical Diseases(NTDs),initiated by the World Health Organization’s NTD roadmap,set out the path towards control and eventual elimination of several tropical diseases by 2020,providing an impetus for local and regional disease elimination programmes.Tropical diseases are often patchy and erratic,and there are differing priorities in resources-limited and endemic countries at various levels of their public health systems.In order to identify and prioritize strategic research on elimination of tropical diseases,the‘First Forum on Surveillance-Response System Leading to Tropical Diseases Elimination’was convened in Shanghai in June 2012.Current strategies and the NTD roadmap were reviewed,followed by discussions on how to identify and critically examine prevailing challenges and opportunities,including inter-sectoral collaboration and approaches for elimination of several infectious,tropical diseases.A priority research agenda within a‘One Health-One World’frame of global health was developed,including(i)the establishment of a platform for resource-sharing and effective surveillance-response systems for Asia Pacific and Africa with an initial focus on elimination of lymphatic filariasis,malaria and schistosomiasis;(ii)development of new strategies,tools and approaches,such as improved diagnostics and antimalarial therapies;(iii)rigorous validation of surveillance-response systems;and(iv)designing pilot studies to transfer Chinese experiences of successful surveillance-response systems to endemic countries with limited resources.Ernest Tambo Lin Ai Xia Zhou Jun-Hu Chen Wei Hu Robert Bergquist Jia-Gang Guo Jürg Utzinger Marcel Tanner Xiao-Nong Zhou 2014Infectious Diseases of Poverty2014,3,1:14
10The enhanced X-ray Timing and Polarimetry mission—eXTP显示文摘In this paper we present the enhanced X-ray Timing and Polarimetry mission—eXTP. eXTP is a space science mission designed to study fundamental physics under extreme conditions of density, gravity and magnetism. The mission aims at determining the equation of state of matter at supra-nuclear density, measuring effects of QED, and understanding the dynamics of matter in strong-field gravity. In addition to investigating fundamental physics, eXTP will be a very powerful observatory for astrophysics that will provide observations of unprecedented quality on a variety of galactic and extragalactic objects. 11肝炎 E : 传染病学和预防显示文摘 Hepatitis E is caused by the hepatitis E virus (HEV), the major etiologic agent of enterically transmitted non-A hepatitis worldwide. HEV is responsible for major outbreaks of acute hepatitis in developing countries, especially in many parts of Africa and Asia. The HEV is a spherical, non-enveloped, single-stranded, positive sense RNA virus that is approximately 32 nm to 34 nm in diameter and is the only member in the family Hepeviridae and genus Hepevirus. There are four distinct genotypes of HEV (genotypes 1-4). While genotype 1 is predominantly associated with large epidemics in developing countries, genotype 3 has recently emerged as a significant pathogen in developed countries. The clinical manifestations and the laboratory abnormalities of hepatitis E are not distinguishable from that caused by other hepatitis viruses. However, high mortality among pregnant women particularly during the third trimester distinguishes HEV from other causes of acute viral hepatitis. Specific etiologic diagnosis among infected cases can be made by serological testing or detection of viral nucleic acid by reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction. Although there are vaccine candidates that had been shown to be safe and efficacious in clini-cal trials, none are approved currently for use. 18Report on Childhood Obesity in China(8):Effects and Sustainability of Physical Activity Intervention on Body Composition of Chinese Youth显示文摘Objectives To determine whether a large-scale physical activity intervention could affect body composition in primary school students in Beijing,China.Methods The study design was one-year cluster randomized controlled trial of physical activity intervention(20 min of daily exercise in the classroom) with an additional year of follow-up among 4 700 students aged 8-11 years at baseline.Results After the one-year intervention,BMI increased by 0.56 kg/m^2(SD 1.15) in the intervention group and by 0.72 kg/m^2(SD 1.20) in the control group,with a mean difference of-0.15 kg/m^2(95%CI:-0.28 to-0.02).BMI z score decreased by-0.05(SD 0.44) in the intervention group,but increased by 0.01(SD 0.46) in the control group,with a mean difference of-0.07(-0.13 to-0.01).After another year of follow up,compared to the control group,children in the intervention group had significantly lower BMI(-0.13,-0.25 to-0.01),BMI z score(-0.05,-0.10 to-0.01),fat mass(-0.27 kg,-0.53 to-0.02) and percent body fat(-0.53,-1.00 to-0.05).The intervention had a more pronounced effect on weight,height,BMI,BMI z score,and body composition among obese children than among normal weight or overweight children.Compared to the control group,the intervention group had a significantly higher percentage of children who maintained or reduced their BMI z score at year 1(P=0.008) and year 2(P=0.04).Conclusions These findings suggest that 20 min of daily moderate to vigorous physical activity during the school year is a feasible and effective way to prevent excessive gain of body weight,BMI,and body fatness in primary school students.YAN-PING LI XIAO=QI HU EVERT G. 19Characteristics of Photosystem Ⅱ Behavior in Cotton(Gossypium hirsutum L.) Bract and Capsule Wall显示文摘Though bract and capsule wall of boll in cotton(Gossypium hirsutum L.) have different photosynthetic capacities,the features of photosystem Ⅱ(PS Ⅱ) in these organs are scarce.In this paper,chlorophyll a fluorescence emission was measured to investigate the difference in the photosynthetic apparatus of dark-acclimated(JIP-test) and light-acclimated(light-saturation pulse method) bract and capsule wall.Compared with leaves,the oxygen evolving system of non-foliar organs had lower efficiency.The pool size of PS Ⅱ electron acceptor of non-foliar organs was small,and the photochemical activity of leaves was higher than that of the bract and capsule wall.In regard to the photosystem I(PS I)electron acceptor side,the pool size of end electron acceptors of leaves was larger,and the quantum yield of electron transport from Q A(PS Ⅱ primary plastoquinone acceptor) further than the PS I electron acceptors of leaves was higher than that of bract and capsule wall.In all green organs,the actual quantum yield of photochemistry decreased with light.The thermal dissipation fraction of light absorbed by the PS Ⅱ antennae was the highest in bract and the lowest in capsule wall relative to leaves.Compared with leaves,capsule wall was characterized by less constitutive thermal dissipation and via dissipation as fluorescence emission.These results suggested that lower PS Ⅱ photochemical activity in non-foliar organs may be result from limitations at the donor side of PS Ⅱ and the acceptor sides of both photosystems.ZHANG Ya-li LUO Hong-hai HU Yuan-yuan Reto J Strasser ZHANG Wang-feng 2013Journal of Integrative Agriculture2013,12,11:4
