Effect of phosphorus fluctuation caused by river water dilution in eutrophic lake on competition between blue-green alga Microcystis aeruginosa and diatom Cyclotella sp.显示文摘Tega-numa (Lake Tega) is one of the eutrophic lakes in Japan. For the improvement of water quality in Lake Tega, the North-chiba Water Conveyance Channel was constructed in 2000, which transfer water from Tone River into the lake. After 2000, the dominant species of diatoms, mainly Cyclotella sp., have been replacing blue-green algae, mainly Microcystis aeruginosa in Lake Tega. This transition of dominant species would be due to the dilution, but the detail mechanism has not been understood yet. This study examined the relationship between phosphorus fluctuation caused by river water dilution to Lake Tega and dominance of algal species, M. aeruginosa or Cyclotella sp. based on the single-species and the mixed-species culture experiments. The single-species culture experiment showed that the half-saturation constant and uptake rate of phosphorus were one order lower and seven times higher for M. aeruginosa than those for Cyclotella sp. These findings implied that M. aeruginosa would possess a potential for the growth and survival over Cyclotella sp. in the phosphorus limited condition. The superiority of M. aeruginosa was reflected in the outcome of the mixed-species culture experiment, i.e., dominance of M. aeruginosa, even phosphorus concentration was lowered to 0.01 mg-P/L. Therefore, it could be concluded that the decrease in phosphorus concentration due to the river water dilution to Lake Tega would be interpreted as a minor factor for the transition of dominant species from M. aeruginosa to Cyclotella sp. | Yoshimasa Amano Yusuke Sakai Takumi Sekiya Kimitaka Takeya Kazuo Taki Motoi Machida | 2010 | Journal of Environmental Sciences2010,22,11: | 16
Early effects of oral administration of omeprazole and roxatidine on intragastric pH显示文摘Objective:The ideal medication for the treatment of acid-related diseases,e.g.,peptic ulcers,stress-related gastric bleeding, functional dyspepsia, and gastroesophageal reflux disease, should have a rapid onset of action to promote hemostasis and relieve the symptoms. The aim of our study was to investigate the inhibitory effects on gastric acid secretion of a single oral administration of a proton pump inhibitor, omeprazole 20 mg,and an H2-receptor antagonist, roxatidine 75 mg.Methods:Ten Helicobacter pylori-negative male subjects participated in this randomized,two-way crossover study.Intragastric pH was monitored continuously for 6 h after single oral administration of omeprazole 20 mg and roxatidine 75 mg.Each administration was separated by a 7-d washout period. Results:During the 6-h study period, the average pH after administration of roxatidine was higher than that after administration of omeprazole(median:4.45 vs.2.65;P=0.0367).Also during the 6-h study period,a longer duration of maintenance at pH above 2,5,and 6 was observed after administration of roxatidine 75 mg than after administration of omeprazole 20 mg(median:90.6% vs.55.2%,P=0.0284;43.7% vs.10.6%,P=0.0125;40.3% vs.3.3%,P=0.0125;respectively).Conclusions:In Helicobacter pylori-negative healthy male subjects, oral administration of roxatidine 75 mg increased the intragastric pH more rapidly than that of omeprazole 20 mg. | Hiroshi IIDA Shingo KATO Yusuke SEKINO Eiji SAKAI Takashi UCHIYAMA Hiroki ENDO Kunihiro HOSONO Yasunari SAKAMOTO Koji FUJITA Masato YONEDA Tomoko KOIDE Hirokazu TAKAHASHI Chikako TOKORO Ayumu GOTO Yasunobu ABE Noritoshi KOBAYASHI Kensuke KUBOTA Eiji GOTOH Shin MAEDA Atsushi NAKAJIMA Masahiko INAMORI | 2012 | Journal of Zhejiang University-Science B(Biomedicine & Biotechnology)2012,13,1: | 6
Parallel computing of discrete element method on multi-core processors显示文摘This paper describes parallel simulation techniques for the discrete element method (DEM) on multi-core processors. Recently, multicore CPU and GPU processors have attracted much attention in accelerating computer simulations in various flelds. We propose a new algorithm for multi-thread parallel computation of DEM, which makes effective use of the available memory and accelerates the computation. This study shows that memory usage is drastically reduced by using this algorithm. To show the practical use of DEM in industry, a large-scale powder system is simulated with a complicated drive unit. We compared the performance of the simulation between the latest GPU and CPU processors with optimized programs for each processor. The results show that the difference in performance is not substantial when using either GPUs or CPUs with a multithread parallel algorithm. In addition, DEM algorithm is shown to have high scalability in a multi-thread parallel computation on a CPU. | Yusuke Shigeto Mikio Sakai | 2011 | Particuology2011,9,4: | 6
characteristics of intestinal pseudo-obstruction in patients with mitochondrial diseases显示文摘AIM: To reveal the frequency, characteristics and prognosis of chronic intestinal pseudo-obstruction (CIP) in mitochondrial disease patients. METHODS: Between January 2000 and December 2010, 31 patients (13 males and 18 females) were di-agnosed with mitochondrial diseases at our hospital. We conducted a retrospective review of the patients' sex, subclass of mitochondrial disease, age at onset of mitochondrial disease, frequency of CIP and the age at its onset, and the duration of survival. The age at onset or at the first diagnosis of the disorder that led to the clinical suspicion of mitochondrial disease was also examined. RESULTS: Twenty patients were sub-classified with mitochondrial encephalopathy with lactic acidosis and stroke-like episodes (MELAS), 8 with chronic progressive external ophthalmoplegia (CPEO), and 3 with myoclonus epilepsy associated with ragged-red fibers (MERRF). Nine patients were diagnosed with CIP, 8 of the 20 (40.0%) patients with MELAS, 0 of the 8 (0.0%) patients with CPEO, and 1 of the 3 (33.3%) patients with MERRF. The median age (range) at the diagnosis and the median age at onset of mitochondrial disease were 40 (17-69) and 25 (12-63) years in patients with CIP, and 49 (17-81) and 40 (11-71) years in patients without CIP. During the survey period, 5 patients (4 patients with MELAS and 1 with CPEO) died. The cause of death was cardiomyopathy in 2 patients with MELAS, cerebral infarction in 1 patient with MELAS, epilepsy and aspiration pneumonia in 1 patient with MELAS, and multiple metastases from gastric cancer and aspiration pneumonia in 1 patient with CPEO. CONCLUSION: Patients with CIP tend to have disorders that are suspected to be related to mitochondrial diseases at younger ages than are patients without CIP. | Yusuke Sekino Masahiko Inamori Eiji Yamada Hidenori Ohkubo Eiji Sakai Takuma Higurashi Hiroshi Iida Kunihiro Hosono Hiroki Endo Takashi Nonaka Hirokazu Takahashi Tomoko Koide Yasunobu Abe Eiji Gotoh Shigeru Koyano Yoshiyuki Kuroiwa Shin Maeda Atsushi Nakajima | 2012 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2012,18,33: | 3
Autonomic nervous system network and liver regeneration显示文摘To date, various signal transducers, cytokines, growth factors, and hormones have been reported to play an important role in homeostasis of various organs. Various cells and organs are involved in the hepatic regeneration process, which proceeds as a result of the coordination of many factors. While these factors are well known to be involved in the liver regeneration after the liver injury, however, as the details of such mechanisms have not been sufficiently elucidated, the practical applicability of hepatic regeneration based on the action of these and cytokines growth factors is still unclear. In terms of the involvement of the autonomic nervous system in hepatic regeneration, cell proliferation resulting from direct signal transduction to the liver has also been reported and recent studies focusing on the inter-organ communication via neural network opened a novel aspect of this field for therapeutic applicability. Therefore, the appropriate understanding of the relationship between autonomic neural network and liver regeneration through various organs including brain, afferent nerve, efferent nerve, etc. is essential. This mini-review explains the principle of neural system involved in the inter-organ communication and its contribution on the liver regeneration upon the liver injury reviewing recent progress in this field. | Kenya Kamimura Ryosuke Inoue Takuro Nagoya Norihiro Sakai Ryo Goto Masayoshi Ko Yusuke Niwa Shuji Terai | 2018 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2018,24,15: | 3

Aldehyde dehydrogenase activity helps identify a subpopulation of murine adipose-derived stem cells with enhanced adipogenic and osteogenic differentiation potential显示文摘AIM To identify and characterize functionally distinct subpopulation of adipose-derived stem cells(ADSCs).METHODS ADSCs cultured from mouse subcutaneous adipose tissue were sorted fluorescence-activated cell sorter based on aldehyde dehydrogenase(ALDH) activity, a widely used stem cell marker. Differentiation potentials were analyzed by utilizing immunocytofluorescece and its quantitative analysis.RESULTS Approximately 15% of bulk ADSCs showed high ALDH activity in flow cytometric analysis. Although significant difference was not seen in proliferation capacity, the adipogenic and osteogenic differentiation capacity was higher in ALDHHi subpopulations than in ALDHLo. Gene set enrichment analysis revealed that ribosome-related gene sets were enriched in the ALDHHi subpopulation. CONCLUSION High ALDH activity is a useful marker for identifying functionally different subpopulations in murine ADSCs. Additionally, we suggested the importance of ribosome for differentiation of ADSCs by gene set enrichment analysis. | Harumichi Itoh Shimpei Nishikawa Tomoya Haraguchi Yu Arikawa Shotaro Eto Masato Hiyama Toshie Iseri Yoshiki Itoh Munekazu Nakaichi Yusuke Sakai Kenji Tani Yasuho Taura Kazuhito Itamoto | 2017 | World Journal of Stem Cells2017,9,10: | 1
Funabot-Suit:A bio-inspired and McKibben muscle-actuated suit for natural kinesthetic perception显示文摘In recent years, there has been extensive utilization of actuators driven by artificial muscles in wearable devices. However, the muscle distribution configurations of most wearable devices have been specifically designed and are difficult to generalize.Consequently, wearable devices that allow direct installation of actuators onto existing clothing are better suited for a wider range of application scenarios. This letter presents the development and evaluation of Funabot-Suit,a human muscle configuration inspired wearable assist device that employs McKibben artificial muscles to induce natural kinesthetic perception in the wearer’s torso.By integrating thin McKibben muscles into an existing motion capture suit, the Funabot-Suit is capable of generating four fundamental motions:forward and backward bending, and left and right twisting. The suit’s performance was assessed through experiments involving three subjects who wore the suit while standing and seated, with the subjects reporting the direction of their kinesthetic perception. The subjects also rated the perceived ease of kinesthetic perception direction on a five-point scale. Our results demonstrate that the Funabot-Suit successfully induces kinesthetic perceptions for the wearer, with a one hundred percent detection ratio for accurate responses in the command direction across all subjects and positions. We observed variations in the sensitivity of left–right and up-down sensations, which can be attributed to the positioning of artificial muscles and individual differences. | Yanhong Peng Yusuke Sakai Koki Nakagawa Yuki Funabora Tadayoshi Aoyama Kenta Yokoe Shinji Doki | 2023 | Biomimetic Intelligence & Robotics2023,3,4: | 1

| 14 | Decline in subarachnoid haemorrhage volumes associated with the first wave of the COVID- 19 pandemic显示文摘Background During the COVID-19 pandemic, decreased volumes of stroke admissions and mechanical thrombectomy were reported. The study’s objective was to examine whether subarachnoid haemorrhage(SAH)hospitalisations and ruptured aneurysm coiling interventions demonstrated similar declines. Methods We conducted a cross-sectional,retrospective,observational study across 6 continents,37 countries and 140 comprehensive stroke centres.Patients with the diagnosis of SAH,aneurysmal SAH,ruptured aneurysm coiling interventions and COVID-19 were identified by prospective aneurysm databases or by International Classification of Diseases,10th Revision, codes. The 3-month cumulative volume, monthly volumes for SAH hospitalisations and ruptured aneurysm coiling procedures were compared for the period before(1 year and immediately before)and during the pandemic, defined as 1 March-31 May 2020.The prior 1-year control period(1 March-31 May 2019)was obtained to account for seasonal variation.Findings There was a significant decline in SAH hospitalisations, with 2044 admissions in the 3 months immediately before and 1585 admissions during the pandemic, representing a relative decline of 22.5%(95%CI−24.3%to−20.7%,p<0.0001).Embolisation of ruptured aneurysms declined with 1170-1035 procedures, respectively, representing an 11.5%(95%CI−13.5%to−9.8%,p=0.002)relative drop.Subgroup analysis was noted for aneurysmal SAH hospitalisation decline from 834 to 626 hospitalisations,a 24.9%relative decline(95%CI−28.0%to−22.1%,p<0.0001).A relative increase in ruptured aneurysm coiling was noted in low coiling volume hospitals of 41.1%(95%CI 32.3%to 50.6%,p=0.008)despite a decrease in SAH admissions in this tertile.Interpretation There was a relative decrease in the volume of SAH hospitalisations, aneurysmal SAH hospitalisations and ruptured aneurysm embolisations during the COVID-19 pandemic. These findings in SAH are consistent with a decrease in other emergencies, such as stroke and myocardial infarction. | Thanh N Nguyen Diogo C Haussen Muhammad M Qureshi Hiroshi
