1Calcium dobesilate for diabetic retinopathy: a systematic review and meta-analysis显示文摘Many randomized clinical controlled trials have confirmed the efficacy and safety of calcium dobesilate in treating diabetic retinopathy(DR).This systematic review critically evaluated the evidence that links calcium dobesilate to DR.In this fixed-effects meta-analysis,a total of 221 pertinent English-language articles published between January 1975 and October 2013 were identified.Systematic searches of PUBMED,Springer Link and the Cochrane Clinical Trials Database were conducted using the keywords 'diabetic retinopathy' and 'calcium dobesilate'.The extracted information included the study design,inclusion and exclusion criteria,setting,sample size,participant mean age,treatment regime,mean change in best corrected visual acuity,laboratory parameters,capillary fragility,intraocular pressure and fundus manifestations based on the findings of fluorescent angiography.The summary statistics indicated that calcium dobesilate was significantly associated with improving retinal microaneurysms(RR: 0.62,95%CI: 0.42?0.90,P=0.01),retinalhemorrhages(RR: 0.39,95% CI: 0.17?0.88,P=0.02); exudates(RR: 0.31,95% CI: 0.12?0.81,P=0.02),reduction of whole blood viscosity(MD: ?0.57 CP,95% CI: ?0.75 to ?0.38,P<0.001),plasma viscosity(MD: ?0.36 CP,95% CI: ?0.63 to ?0.09,P=0.01) and blood cholesterol(MD: ?0.48 mg m L?1,95% CI: ?0.64?0.33,P<0.00001).Intraocular pressure was also significantly reduced(MD: ?5.59 mm Hg,95% CI: ?6.69 to ?4.50,P<0.00001).The results indicate that calcium dobesilate effectively treats DR at the systematic and local ocular levels.ZHANG XinYuan LIU Wei WU ShanShan JIN JingLong LI WeiHong Wang NingLi 2015Science China(Life Sciences)2015,58,1:54

5Learning-based lensless imaging through optically thick scattering media显示文摘The problem of imaging through thick scattering media is encountered in many disciplines of science,ranging from mesoscopic physics to astronomy.Photons become diffusive after propagating through a scattering medium with an optical thickness of over 10 times the scattering mean free path.As a result,no image but only noise-like patterns can be directly formed.We propose a hybrid neural network for computational imaging through such thick scattering media,demonstrating the reconstruction of image information from various targets hidden behind a white polystyrene slab of 3 mm in thickness or 13.4 times the scattering mean free path.We also demonstrate that the target image can be retrieved with acceptable quality from a very small fraction of its scattered pattern,suggesting that the speckle pattern produced in this way is highly redundant.This leads to a profound question of how the information of the target being encoded into the speckle is to be addressed in future studies.Meng Lyu Hao Wang Guowei Li Shanshan Zheng Guohai Situ 2019Advanced Photonics2019,1,3:28

7Ginkgo biloba extract improved cognitive and neurological functions of acute ischaemic stroke:a randomised controlled trial显示文摘Purpose To evaluate the efficacy and safety of Ginkgo biloba extract(GBE)in acute ischaemic stroke and its impact on the recurrence of vascular events.Methods We conducted a multicentre,prospective,randomised,open label,blinded,controlled clinical trial enrollingpatients with an onset of acute stroke within 7 days from five hospitals in China Jiangsu Province.Participants were assigned to the GBE group(450 mg GBE with 100 mg aspirin daily)or the control group(100 mg aspirin daily)for 6 months.The primary outcome was the decline in the Montreal Cognitive Assessment score at 6 months.Secondary outcomes were other neuropsychological tests of cognitive and neurological function,the the incidence of adverse events and vascular events.results 348 patients were enrolled:179 in the GBE group and 169 in the control group.With 18 patients lost to follow-up,the dropout rate was 5.17%.Admission data between two groups were similar,but in the GBE group there was a marked slow down in the decline in the Montreal Cognitive Assessment scores(−2.77±0.21 vs−1.99±0.23,P=0.0116(30 days);−3.34±0.24 vs−2.48±0.26,P=0.0165(90 days);−4.00±0.26 vs−2.71±0.26,P=0.0004(180 days))compared with controls.The National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale scores at 12 and 30 days,the modified Rankin Scale scores for independent rate at 30,90 and 180 days,and the Barthel Index scores at 30,90 and 180 days in the GBE group were significantly improved compared with controls.Improvements were also observedin GBE groups for Mini-Metal State Examination scores of 30,90 and 180 days,Webster's digit symbol test scores at 30 days and Executive Dysfunction Index scores at 30 and 180 days.No significant differences were seen in the incidence of adverse events or vascular events.conclusions We conclude that GBE in combination with aspirin treatment alleviated cognitive and neurological deficits after acute ischaemic stroke without increasing the incidence of vascular events.Shanshan Li Xinjiang Zhang Qi Fang Junshan Zhou Meijuan Zhang Hui Wang Yan Chen Biyun Xu Yanfeng Wu Lai Qian Yun Xu 2017Stroke & Vascular Neurology2017,2,4:25

13Polysaccharides from Angelica sinensis alleviate neuronal cell injury caused by oxidative stress显示文摘Angelica sinensis has antioxidative and neuroprotective effects. In the present study, we aimed to determine the neuroprotective effect of polysaccharides isolated from Angelica sinensis. In a preliminary experiment, Angelica sinensis polysaccharides not only protected PC12 neuronal cells from H 2 O 2-induced cytotoxicity, but also reduced apoptosis and intracellular reactive oxygen species levels, and increased the mitochondrial membrane potential induced by H 2 O 2 treatment. In a rat model of local cerebral ischemia, we further demonstrated that Angelica sinensis polysaccharides enhanced the antioxidant activity in cerebral cortical neurons, increased the number of microvessels, and improved blood flow after ischemia. 14Distribution and sources of solvent extractable organic compounds in PM_(2.5) during 2007 Chinese Spring Festival in Beijing显示文摘The solvent extractable organic compounds (SEOC), including n-alkanes, polycylic aromatic hydrocarbons, fatty acids, anddicarboxylic acids in PM2.5 during the 2007 Chinese Spring Festival in Beijing, were measured via gas chromatography-massspectrometry for determining the characteristics and sources of these organic pollutants. The concentrations of total n-alkanes, PAHs,and organic acids before Chinese Spring Festival Eve (1025.5, 95.9, and 543.3 ng/m3, respectively) were higher than those after (536.6,58.9, and 331.8 ng/m3, respectively). n-Aalkanes and PAHs had much higher concentration in nighttime than those in daytime becauseof high relative humidity and low wind speed during the night. Combustion of coal and exhaust emission were major sources of n-alkanes. It could be concluded by the characteristic ratios that the primary source of PAHs in fine particles was the combustion of coal,but the combustion of gasoline was in the next place. The ratios of C18:0/C16 indicated the contribution of vehicular emissions to thefatty acids. 15Identification of mecciRNAs and their roles in the mitochondrial entry of proteins显示文摘Mammalian mitochondria have small genomes encoding very limited numbers of proteins.Over one thousand proteins and noncoding RNAs encoded by the nuclear genome must be imported from the cytosol into the mitochondria.Here,we report the identification of hundreds of circular RNAs(mecciRNAs)encoded by the mitochondrial genome.We provide both in vitro and in vivo evidence to show that mecciRNAs facilitate the mitochondrial entry of nuclear-encoded proteins by serving as molecular chaperones in the folding of imported proteins.Known components involved in mitochondrial protein and RNA importation,such as TOM40 and PNPASE,interact with mecciRNAs and regulate protein entry.The expression of mecciRNAs is regulated,and these transcripts are critical for the adaption of mitochondria to physiological conditions and diseases such as stresses and cancers by modulating mitochondrial protein importation.mecciRNAs and their associated physiological roles add categories and functions to the known eukaryotic circular RNAs and shed novel light on the communication between mitochondria and the nucleus.Xu Liu Xiaolin Wang Jingxin Li Shanshan Hu Yuqi Deng Hao Yin Xichen Bao Qiangfeng Cliff Zhang Geng Wang Baolong Wang Qinghua Shi Ge Shan 2020Science China(Life Sciences)2020,63,10:15
16The prognostic and therapeutic implications of circulating tumor cell phenotype detection based on epithelial-mesenchymal transition markers in the first-line chemotherapy of HER2-negative metastatic breast cancer显示文摘Background:Epithelial-mesenchymal transition(EMT)is implicated in the metastatic process and presents a chal-lenge to epithelial cell adhesion molecule-based detection of circulating tumor cells(CTCs),which have been demon-strated to be a prognostic indicator in metastatic breast cancer.Although evidence has indicated that heterogeneity of CTCs based on EMT markers is associated with disease progression,no standard recommendations have been established for clinical practice.This study aimed to evaluate the prognostic significance of dynamic CTC detection based on EMT for metastatic breast cancer patients.Methods:We enrolled 108 human epidermal growth factor receptor 2-negative metastatic breast cancer patients from the prospective phase III CAMELLIA study and applied the CanPatrol CTC enrichment technique to identify CTC phenotypes(including epithelial CTCs,biphenotypic epithelial/mesenchymal CTCs,and mesenchymal CTCs)in peripheral blood samples.Receiver operating characteristic curve analyses of total CTC count and the proportion of mesenchymal CTCs for predicting the 1-year progression-free survival(PFS)rate were conducted to determine the optimal cut-off values,and Kaplan-Meier analysis and Cox proportional hazards regression analysis were performed to investigate the prognostic value of the cut-off values of both total CTC count and the proportion of mesenchymal CTCs in combination.Results:For predicting the 1-year PFS rate,the optimal cut-off value of total CTC count was 9.5(Area under the curve[AUC]=0.538,95%confidence interval[CI]=0.418-0.657),and that of the proportion of mesenchymal CTCs was 10.7%(AUC=0.581,95%CI=0.463-0.699).We used the two cut-off values in combination to forecast PFS in which the total CTC count was equaled to or exceeded 10/5 mL with the proportion of mesenchymal CTCs surpassed 10.7%.Patients who met the combined criteria had significantly shorter median PFS than did those who did not meet the criteria(6.2 vs.9.9 months,P=0.010).A nomogram was constructed based on the criteria and significant clinicopatho-logical characteristics with a C-index of 0.613(P=0.010).Conclusions: The criteria, which combine the total CTC count and the proportion of mesenchymal CTCs, may be used to monitor therapeutic resistance and predict prognosis in patients with metastatic breast cancer.Xiuwen Guan Fei Ma Chunxiao Li Shiyang Wu Shangying Hu Jiefen Huang Xiaoying Sun Jiayu Wang Yang Luo Ruigang Cai Ying Fan Qiao Li Shanshan Chen Pin Zhang Qing Li Binghe Xu 2019Cancer Communications2019,39,1:15
17A system dynamics approach for water resources policy analysis in arid land:a model for Manas River Basin显示文摘The Manas River Basin in Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region,similar to other arid regions,is facing water constraints which challenge decision-makers as to how to rationally allocate the available water resources to meet the demands from industries and natural ecosystems.Policies which integrate the supply and demand are needed to address the water stress issues.An object-oriented system dynamics model was developed to capture the interrelationships between water availability and increasing water demands from the growth of industries,agricultural production and the population through modeling the decision-making process of the water exploration explicitly,in which water stress is used as a major indicator.The model is composed of four sectors:1) natural surface and groundwater resources;2) water demand;3) the water exploitation process,including the decision to build reservoirs,canals and pumps;4) water stress to which political and social systems respond through increasing the supply,limiting the growth or improving the water use efficiency.The model was calibrated using data from 1949 to 2009 for population growth,irrigated land area,industry output,perceived water stress,groundwater resources availability and the drying-out process of Manas River;and simulations were carried out from 2010 to 2050 on an annual time step.The comparison of results from calibration and observation showed that the model corresponds to observed behavior,and the simulated values fit the observed data and trends accurately.Sensitivity analysis showed that the model is robust to changes in model parameters related to population growth,land reclamation,pumping capacity and capital contribution to industry development capacity.Six scenarios were designed to investigate the effectiveness of policy options in the area of reservoir relocation,urban water recycling,water demand control and groundwater pumping control.The simulation runs demonstrated that the technical solutions for improving water availability and water use efficiency are not sustainable.Acknowledging the carrying capacity of water resources and eliminating a growth-orientated value system are crucial for the sustainability of the Manas River Basin.ShanShan DAI LanHai LI HongGang XU XiangLiang PAN XueMei LI 2013Journal of Arid Land2013,5,1:14
18Factors Associated with Thrombolysis Outcome in Ischemic Stroke Patients with Atrial Fibrillation显示文摘The outcome of early intravenous thrombolysis for ischemic stroke in patients with atrial fibrillation(AF)is worse than that without thrombosis. How to increase the efficacy of intravenous thrombolysis for AF-related ischemic stroke remains largely unknown. In this study, we investigated factors that influence the effect of intravenous thrombolysis in these patients. Our results showed that thrombolysis was independently associated with a favorable outcome(P \ 0.001) and did not influence the mortality of AF-related ischemic stroke, although it increased the risk of hemorrhage within 24 h after treatment. Risk factors for a poor outcome at admission were:heart failure(P = 0.045); high systolic pressure(P = 0.039); high blood glucose(P = 0.030); and a high National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale(NIHSS) score(P \ 0.001). Moreover, high systolic pressure at admission(P = 0.007), high blood glucose(P = 0.027), and a high NIHSS score(P \ 0.001) were independent risk factors for mortality at 3 months. Besides thrombolysis, a high NIHSS score(P = 0.006) and warfarin taken within 48 h before stroke onset(P = 0.032) were also independent risk factors for symptomatic hemorrhage within 24 h after treatment. 20Species and genetic diversity affect leaf litter decomposition in subtropical broadleaved forest in southern China显示文摘Aims Litter decomposition is a fundamental process within ecosystem functioning,and it is largely dependent on the biodiversity of ecosystems.We explored the effects of species diversity and genetic diversity of litter on the litter decomposition rate.Methods We used laboratory microcosms to determine whether species diversity and genetic diversity and their interaction affect leaf litter decomposition.We set up 8 treatments containing 1,2,4 diversity levels of four broad-leaf species(Alniphyllum fortunei,Idesia polycarpa,Cinnamomum camphora and Daphniphyllum oldhamii)both in species and genetic sense.Totally 246 microcosms containing same amount of soil and litter of prescribed diversity treatment were stored in the dark at 25℃for 12 weeks.Important Findings The effect of litter species diversity on litter decomposition was largely dependent on species composition of the litter mixture in terms of species identity.Overall,the decomposition rate increased linearly with the richness of seed family when the species identity was disregarded.However,no interactive effect of species diversity and genetic diversity on mass loss was detected.The litter decomposition rate was found to be unrelated to the initial carbon(C),whereas it was negatively correlated with the initial total nitrogen(N)and N:P ratio.However,the regression curves of the litter decomposition rate against the total P and C:N ratio displayed quadratic parabolas opening upward and downward,respectively.This study demonstrated how species and/or genetic diversity and the stoichiometry of litter per se affect litter decomposition.Further studies should be performed in the long term to ascertain how such effects operate and how they change during the decomposition process,particularly in response to varying composition and diversity of standing plants in the environments.Shanshan Li Yuewei Tong Zhengwen Wang 2017Journal of Plant Ecology2017,10,1:13
