| 4 | Linking atmospheric pollution to cryospheric change in the Third Pole region: current progress and future prospects显示文摘The Tibetan Plateau and its surroundings are known as the Third Pole(TP). This region is noted for its high rates of glacier melt and the associated hydrological shifts that affect water supplies in Asia. Atmospheric pollutants contribute to climatic and cryospheric changes through their effects on solar radiation and the albedos of snow and ice surfaces; moreover, the behavior and fates within the cryosphere and environmental impacts of environmental pollutants are topics of increasing concern. In this review, we introduce a coordinated monitoring and research framework and network to link atmospheric pollution and cryospheric changes(APCC) within the TP region. We then provide an up-to-date summary of progress and achievements related to the APCC research framework, including aspects of atmospheric pollution’s composition and concentration, spatial and temporal variations, trans-boundary transport pathways and mechanisms, and effects on the warming of atmosphere and changing in Indian monsoon, as well as melting of glacier and snow cover. We highlight that exogenous air pollutants can enter into the TP’s environments and cause great impacts on regional climatic and environmental changes. At last, we propose future research priorities and map out an extended program at the global scale. | 5 | A multi-center study of hemodynamic characteristics exhibited by children with unexplained syncope显示文摘Background Syncope is common in children and adolescents,with 15% estimated to have had at least one syncopal episode by age 18.In recent years,an increasing number of children,especially girls at their school age,have developed unexplained syncope.The mechanism of an unexplained syncope exhibited by children is incompletely studied;the association between different hemodynamic patterns and clinical features is also not clear.The aim of the study was to investigate the hemodynamic patterns of children with unexplained syncope and to examine the clinical relevance.Methods Two hundred and eight children [87 boys,121 girls,aged 3-19 years,mean(11.66±2.72) years] were selectively recruited from May 2000 to April 2006 when they presented syncope as their main complaint at the Multi-center Network for Childhood Syncope in Beijing,Hunan Province,Hubei Province,and Shanghai of China.All of the patients underwent head-up tilt tests;data were analyzed using SPSS version 10.0 for Windows.Continuous variables were expressed as the mean±standard deviation.Dichotomous variables were compared through a χ2 test.A value of P<0.05(two sided) was regarded as statistically significant.Results The age distribution of children with syncope was approximately normal.Head-up tilt tests was positive in 155 children,and the incidence of positive response of the baseline head-up tilt test for diagnosing unexplained syncope was 50.48%.The sensitivity value and diagnostic value of sublingual nitroglycerin head-up tilt test were both 74.52%.The hemodynamic pattern was normal in 53 children.The 155 children,who were positive in head-up tilt tests,showed signs of postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome(60,28.8%),the vasoinhibitory pattern(72,34.6%),the cardioinhibitory pattern(5,2.4%),and the mixed pattern(18,8.7%).The gender distribution between the two age groups(age < 12 years vs age ≥ 12 years) was not different(P>0.05).The distribution of hemodynamic patterns between the children of the two age groups(age < 12 years vs age ≥ 12 years),and the children with different complaints(dizziness vs syncope) was significantly different(P<0.05),while the distribution between the children of different sexes and different lasting time of syncope(≤ 5 minutes vs> 5 minutes) was not significantly different(P>0.05).Different hemodynamic patterns were differentiated by differing syncope inducements,presymptoms,and complicated symptoms during and after syncope.Conclusion The tested girls were more prone when compared with the boys to have unexplained syncope,and the peak age was around twelve years old.The incidence of positive response of head-up tilt tests was also relatively higher for the girls.The distribution of hemodynamic patterns for different ages was different.For children with unexplained syncope,we should use head-up tilttests to distinguish the hemodynamic patterns in order to adopt rational therapeutic measures. | CHEN Li YANG Yuan-yuan WANG Cheng WANG Hong-wei TIAN Hong ZHANG Qing-you CHEN Jian-jun WANG Yu-li KANG Yi-long TANG Chao-shu DU Jun-bao | 2006 | Chinese Medical Journal2006,,24: | 23 |
| 6 | Network pharmacology-based analysis of Chinese herbal Naodesheng formula for application to Alzheimer's disease显示文摘Naodesheng(NDS) formula, which consists of Rhizoma Chuanxiong, Lobed Kudzuvine, Carthamus tinctorius, Radix Notoginseng, and Crataegus pinnatifida, is widely applied for the treatment of cardio/cerebrovascular ischemic diseases, ischemic stroke, and sequelae of cerebral hemorrhage, etc. At present, the studies on NDS formula for Alzheimer's disease(AD) only focus on single component of this prescription, and there is no report about the synergistic mechanism of the constituents in NDS formula for the potential treatment of dementia. Therefore, the present study aimed to predict the potential targets and uncover the mechanisms of NDS formula for the treatment of AD. Firstly, we collected the constituents in NDS formula and key targets toward AD. Then, drug-likeness, oral bioavailability, and blood-brain barrier permeability were evaluated to find drug-like and lead-like constituents for treatment of central nervous system diseases. By combining the advantages of machine learning, molecular docking, and pharmacophore mapping, we attempted to predict the targets of constituents and find potential multi-target compounds from NDS formula. Finally, we built constituent-target network, constituent-target-target network and target-biological pathway network to study the network pharmacology of the constituents in NDS formula. | 9 | Effect of metabolic syndrome on prognosis and clinical characteristics of revascularization in patients with coronary artery disease显示文摘Background People with metabolic syndrome are at higher risk for developing coronary artery disease (CAD). The effect of the metabolic syndrome on outcomes in patients with preexisting CAD has not been well studied. This study was conducted to assess the prevalence, characteristics, in hospital and long term prognosis of CAD with metabolic syndrome and to determine the factors influencing the prognosis of the disease. Methods The DESIRE registry contains data of 3696 patients with CAD between 2001 and 2004. Mean long term followup was (829±373) days. Diagnosis of metabolic syndrome was based on modified International Diabetes Federation (IDF) Worldwide Definition of the Metabolic Syndrome,using body mass index (BMI) instead of waist circumference. Results Of 2596 patients with complete records of height, weight, and so on, 1280 (49.3%) were identified with metabolic syndrome. The patients with metabolic syndrome had higher level of body mass index, systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, fasting glucose and disordered blood lipid (all P<0.0001), with higher creatinine [(10.5±4.3) mg/L vs (9.9±2.9) mg/L, P<0.0001] and the number of white blood cells [(7.49±2.86) ×109/L vs (7.19±2.62) ×109/L, P=0.008) compared with those without metabolic syndrome. The patients with metabolic syndrome showed severer coronary angiographic alterations (left main artery and/or ≥2-vessel) (73.6% vs 69.6%, P=0.031). There were no significant differences of major adverse cardiac and cerebral events (MACCE) or mortality in hospital between the two groups. During followup, the ratio of MACCE in CAD with metabolic syndrome patients increased significantly (11.8% vs 10.0%, P=0.044). Fasting blood glucose (≥1000 mg/L) and triglyceride (TG, ≥1500 mg/L) were responsible for most of the increased risk associated with the metabolic syndrome (adjusted OR 1.465, 95% CI 1.037-1.874, P=0.032; OR 1.378, 95% CI 1.014-1.768, P=0.044). Conclusions The prevalence of metabolic syndrome was very high in CAD patients. | 10 | Variation in cis-regulation of a NAC transcription factor contributes to drought tolerance in wheat显示文摘Drought is a major environmental factor limiting wheat production worldwide,and developing drought-tolerant cultivars is a central challenge for wheat breeders globally.Therefore,it is important to identify genetic components determining drought tolerance in wheat.In this study,we identified a wheat NAC gene(TaNAC071-A)that is tightly associated with drought tolerance by a genome-wide association study.Knockdown of TaNAC071-A in wheat attenuated plant drought tolerance,whereas its overexpression significantly enhanced drought tolerance through improved water-use efficiency and increased expression of stress-responsive genes.This heightened water-saving mechanism mitigated the yield loss caused by water deficit.Further candidate gene association analysis showed that a 108-bp insertion in the promoter of TaNAC071-A alters its expression level and contributes to variation in drought tolerance among wheat accessions.This insertion contains two MYB cis-regulatory elements(CREs)that can be directly bound by the MYB transcription activator,TaMYBL1,thereby leading to increased TaNAC071-A expression and plant drought tolerance.Importantly,introgression of this 108-bp insertion allele,TaNAC071-AIn-693,into drought-sensitive cultivars could improve their drought tolerance,demonstrating that it is a valuable genetic resource for wheat breeding.Taken together,our findings highlight a major breakthrough in determining the genetic basis underlying phenotypic variation in wheat drought tolerance and showcase the potential of exploiting CRE-containing indels for improving important agronomical traits. | Hude Mao Shumin Li Bin Chen Chao Jian Fangming Mei Yifang Zhang Fangfang Li Nan Chen Tian Li Linying Du Li Ding Zhongxue Wang Xinxiu Cheng Xiaojing Wang Zhensheng Kang | 2022 | Molecular Plant2022,15,2: | 9 |
| 11 | Optimizing mechanical property and cytocompatibility of the biodegradable Mg-Zn-Y-Nd alloy by hot extrusion and heat treatment显示文摘The Mg-Zn-Y-Nd alloy is a new type of degradable material for biomedical application. In the present study, Mg-6Zn-1.2Y-0.8Nd alloy was fabricated, and then extrusion and heat treatment were conducted to optimize its mechanical properties and cytocompatibility. The microstructure observation, mechanical property, degradation behavior and cytocompatibility tests were conducted on the Mg-Zn-Y-Nd alloy with three different states: as-cast(alloy C), as-extruded(alloy E) and extruded + heat treated(alloy EH).The results show that alloy C consists of coarse grains and continuous secondary phases. The extrusion process has caused incomplete recrystallization, and results in a mixed grain structure of elongated grains and small equiaxed grains(alloy E). The heat treatment process has promoted the recrystallization and homogenized the grain structure(alloy EH). Both the strength and ductility of the alloy has been improved by extrusion, but the following heat treatment has decreased the strength and increased the ductility.The degradation behavior of the alloy C and E alloys does not show much difference, but improves slightly in alloy EH, because the heat treatment has homogenized the microstructure and released the residual stress in the alloy. The directly and indirectly cell viability tests indicate that alloy EH exhibits the best cytocompatibility, which should be ascribed to its relative uniform degradation and low ion releasing rate. | 12 | High-quality de novo assembly of the Eucommia ulmoides haploid genome provides new insights into evolution and rubber biosynthesis显示文摘We report the acquisition of a high-quality haploid chromosome-scale genome assembly for the first time in a tree species,Eucommia ulmoides,which is known for its rubber biosynthesis and medicinal applications.The assembly was obtained by applying PacBio and Hi–C technologies to a haploid that we specifically generated.Compared to the initial genome release,this one has significantly improved assembly quality.The scaffold N50(53.15 MB)increased 28-fold,and the repetitive sequence content(520 Mb)increased by 158.24 Mb,whereas the number of gaps decreased from 104,772 to 128.A total of 92.87%of the 26,001 predicted protein-coding genes identified with multiple strategies were anchored to the 17 chromosomes.A new whole-genome duplication event was superimposed on the earlierγpaleohexaploidization event,and the expansion of long terminal repeats contributed greatly to the evolution of the genome.The more primitive rubber biosynthesis of this species,as opposed to that in Hevea brasiliensis,relies on the methylerythritol-phosphate pathway rather than the mevalonate pathway to synthesize isoprenyl diphosphate,as the MEP pathway operates predominantly in trans-polyisoprene-containing leaves and central peels.Chlorogenic acid biosynthesis pathway enzymes were preferentially expressed in leaves rather than in bark.This assembly with higher sequence contiguity can foster not only studies on genome structure and evolution,gene mapping,epigenetic analysis and functional genomics but also efforts to improve E.ulmoides for industrial and medical uses through genetic engineering. | Yun Li Hairong Wei Jun Yang Kang Du Jiang Li Ying Zhang Tong Qiu Zhao Liu Yongyu Ren Lianjun Song Xiangyang Kang | 2020 | Horticulture Research2020,7,1: | 7 |

| 20 | The mass-balance characteristics and sensitivities to climate variables of Laohugou Glacier No.12,western Qilian Mountains,China显示文摘Due to global warming, glaciers on the Tibetan Plateau(TP) are experiencing widespread shrinkage; however, the mechanisms controlling glacier variations across the TP are still rather unclear, especially on the northeastern TP. In this study, a physically based, distributed surface-energy and mass-balance model was used to simulate glacier mass balance forced by meteorological data. The model was applied to Laohugou No. 12 Glacier, western Qilian Mountains, China, during2010~2012. The simulated albedo and mass balance were validated and calibrated by in situ measurements. The simulated annual glacier-wide mass balances were-385 mm water equivalent(w.e.) in 2010/2011 and-232 mm w.e. in 2011/2012,respectively. The mean equilibrium-line altitude(ELA) was 5,015 m a.s.l., during 2010~2012, which ascended by 215 m compared to that in the 1970 s. The mean accumulation area ratio(AAR) was 39% during the two years. Climatic-sensitivity experiments indicated that the change of glacier mass balance resulting from a 1.5 °C increase in air temperature could be offset by a 30% increase in annual precipitation.
