Linking atmospheric pollution to cryospheric change in the Third Pole region: current progress and future prospects显示文摘The Tibetan Plateau and its surroundings are known as the Third Pole(TP). This region is noted for its high rates of glacier melt and the associated hydrological shifts that affect water supplies in Asia. Atmospheric pollutants contribute to climatic and cryospheric changes through their effects on solar radiation and the albedos of snow and ice surfaces; moreover, the behavior and fates within the cryosphere and environmental impacts of environmental pollutants are topics of increasing concern. In this review, we introduce a coordinated monitoring and research framework and network to link atmospheric pollution and cryospheric changes(APCC) within the TP region. We then provide an up-to-date summary of progress and achievements related to the APCC research framework, including aspects of atmospheric pollution’s composition and concentration, spatial and temporal variations, trans-boundary transport pathways and mechanisms, and effects on the warming of atmosphere and changing in Indian monsoon, as well as melting of glacier and snow cover. We highlight that exogenous air pollutants can enter into the TP’s environments and cause great impacts on regional climatic and environmental changes. At last, we propose future research priorities and map out an extended program at the global scale. The ongoing monitoring activities and research facilitate comprehensive studies of atmosphere–cryosphere interactions, represent one of China’s key research expeditions to the TP and the polar regions and contribute to the global perspective of earth system science. | Shichang Kang Qianggong Zhang Yun Qian Zhenming Ji Chaoliu Li Zhiyuan Cong Yulan Zhang Junming Guo Wentao Du Jie Huang Qinglong You Arnico K.Panday Maheswar Rupakheti Deliang Chen Orjan Gustafsson Mark H.Thiemens Dahe Qin | 2019 | National Science Review2019,6,4: | 35
Influence of transboundary air pollution on air quality in southwestern China显示文摘Air pollution is a grand challenge of our time due to its multitude of adverse impacts on environment and society, with the scale of impacts more severe in developing countries, including China. Thus,China has initiated and implemented strict air pollution control measures over last several years to reduce impacts of air pollution.Monitoring data from Jan 2015 to Dec 2019 on six criteria air pollutants(SO_(2),NO_(2),CO,O_(3),PM_(2.5),and PM_(10))at eight sites in southwestern China were investigated to understand the situation and analyze the impacts of transboundary air pollutants in this region. In terms of seasonal variation, the maximum concentrations of air pollutants at these sites were observed in winter or spring season depending on individual site. For diurnal variation, surface ozone peaked in the afternoon while the other pollutants had a bimodal pattern with peaks in the morning and late afternoon. There was limited transport of domestic emissions of air pollutants in China to these sites.Local emissions enhanced the concentrations of air pollutants during some pollution events.Mostly, the transboundary transport of air pollution from South Asia and Southeast Asia was associated with high concentrations of most air pollutants observed in southwestern China.Since air pollutants can be transported to southwestern China over long distances from the source regions,it is necessary to conduct more research to properly attribute and quantify transboundary transport of air pollutants, which will provide more solid scientific guidance for air pollution management in southwestern China. | Xiufeng Yin Shichang Kang Maheswar Rupakheti Benjamin de Foy Ping Li Junhua Yang Kunpeng Wu Qianggong Zhang Dipesh Rupakheti | 2021 | Geoscience Frontiers2021,12,6: | 4
Impacts of Indian summer monsoon and stratospheric intrusion on air pollutants in the inland Tibetan Plateau显示文摘Air pollutants can be transported to the pristine regions such as the Tibetan Plateau,by monsoon and stratospheric intrusion. The Tibetan Plateau region has limited local anthropogenic emissions, while this region is influenced strongly by transport of heavy emissions mainly from South Asia.We conducted a comprehensive study on various air pollutants (PM_(2.5),total gaseous mercury, and surface ozone) at Nam Co Station in the inland Tibetan Plateau.Monthly mean PM_(2.5)concentration at Nam Co peaked in April before monsoon season, and decreased during the whole monsoon season (June–September).Monthly mean total gaseous mercury concentrations at Nam Co peaked in July and were in high levels during monsoon season. The Indian summer monsoon acted as a facilitator for transporting gaseous pollutants (total gaseous mercury) but a suppressor for particulate pollutants (PM_(2.5)) during the monsoon season.Different from both PM_(2.5)and total gaseous mercury variabilities, surface ozone concentrations at Nam Co are primarily attributed to stratospheric intrusion of ozone and peaked in May.The effects of the Indian summer monsoon and stratospheric intrusion on air pollutants in the inland Tibetan Plateau are complex and require further studies. | Xiufeng Yin Shichang Kang Benjamin de Foy Dipesh Rupakheti Maheswar Rupakheti Zhiyuan Cong Xin Wanb Guoshuai Zhang Qianggong Zhang | 2021 | Geoscience Frontiers2021,12,6: | 2
Nitrogenous and carbonaceous aerosols in PM_(2.5) and TSP during pre-monsoon:Characteristics and sources in the highly polluted mountain valley显示文摘This study reports for the first time a comprehensive analysis of nitrogenous and carbona-ceous aerosols in simultaneously collected PM_(2.5) and TSP during pre-monsoon(March-May 2018)from a highly polluted urban Kathmandu Valley(KV)of the Himalayan foothills. The mean mass concentration of PM_(2.5)(129.8 μg/m^(3))was only-25%of TSP mass(558.7 μg/m^(3))indicating the dominance of coarser mode aerosols. However, the mean concentration as well as fractional contributions of water-soluble total nitrogen(WSTN)and carbonaceous species reveal their predominance in find-mode aerosols. The mean mass concentration of WSTN was 17.43±4.70 μg/m^(3)(14%)in PM_(2.5) and 24.64±8.07 μg/m^(3)(5%)in TSP.Moreover, the fractional contribution of total carbonaceous aerosols(TCA)is much higher in PM_(2.5)(~34%)than that in TSP(~20%).The relatively low OC/EC ratio in PM_(2.5)(3.03±1.47)and TSP(4.64±1.73)suggests fossil fuel combustion as the major sources of carbonaceous aerosols with contributions from secondary organic aerosols.Five-day air mass back trajectories sim-ulated with the HYSPLIT model, together with MODIS fire counts indicate the influence of local emissions as well as transported pollutants from the Indo-Gangetic Plain region to the south of the Himalayan foothills.Principal component analysis(PCA)also suggests a mixed contribution from other local anthropogenic, biomass burning, and crustal sources. Our re-sults highlight that it is necessary to control local emissions as well as regional transport while designing mitigation measures to reduce the KV's air pollution. | Hemraj Bhattarai Lekhendra Tripathee Shichang Kang Pengfei Chen Chhatra Mani Sharma Kirpa Ram Junming Guo Maheswar Rupakheti | 2022 | Journal of Environmental Sciences2022,34,5: | 1
Modifications in aerosol physical, optical and radiative properties during heavy aerosol events over Dushanbe, Central Asia显示文摘The location of Central Asia, almost at the center of the global dust belt region, makes it susceptible for dust events. The studies on atmospheric impact of dust over the region are very limited despite the large area occupied by the region and its proximity to the mountain regions (Tianshan,Hindu Kush-KarakoramHimalayas,and Tibetan Plateau). In this study,we analyse and explain the modification in aerosols’physical, optical and radiative properties during various levels of aerosol loading observed over Central Asia utilizing the data collected during 2010–2018 at the AERONET station in Dushanbe,Tajikistan.Aerosol episodes were classified as strong anthropogenic, strong dust and extreme dust. The mean aerosol optical depth (AOD) during these three types of events was observed a factor of ~3,3.5 and 6.6,respectively,higher than the mean AOD for the period 2010–2018.The corresponding mean fine-mode fraction was 0.94,0.20 and 0.16,respectively,clearly indicating the dominance of fine-mode anthropogenic aerosol during the first type of events, whereas coarse-mode dust aerosol dominated during the other two types of events. This was corroborated by the relationships among various aerosol parameters (AOD vs.AE,and EAE vs.AAE,SSA and RRI).The mean aerosol radiative forcing (ARF) at the top of the atmosphere (ARF_(TOA)),the bottom of the atmosphere (ARF_(BOA)),and in the atmosphere (ARFATM) were -35±7,-73±16,and38±17 Wm^(-2)during strong anthropogenic events,-48±12,-85±24,and 37±15 Wm^(-2)during strong dust event, and -68±19,-117±38,and 49±21 Wm-2during extreme dust events.Increase in aerosol loading enhanced the aerosol-induced atmospheric heating rate to 0.5–1.6 K day^(-1)(strong anthropogenic events),0.4–1.9 K day^(-1)(strong dust events) and 0.8–2.7 K day^(-1)(extreme dust events). The source regions of air masses to Dushanbe during the onset of such events are also identified. Our study contributes to the understanding of dust and anthropogenic aerosols,in particular the extreme events and their disproportionally high radiative impacts over Central Asia. | Dipesh Rupakheti Maheswar Rupakheti Xiufeng Yin Julian Hofer Mukesh Rai Yuling Hu Sabur F.Abdullaev Shichang Kang | 2021 | Geoscience Frontiers2021,12,6: | 0
