1Changes in soil microbial community response to precipitation events in a semi-arid steppe of the Xilin River Basin, China显示文摘In the context of climate change, precipitation is predicted to become more intense at the global scale. Such change may alter soil microbial communities and the microbially mediated carbon and nitrogen dynamics. In this study, we experimentally repackaged precipitation patterns during the growing season(from June to September) of 2012 in a semi-arid temperate steppe of the Xilin River Basin in Inner Mongolia of China, based on the 60-year growing season precipitation data. Specifically, a total amount of 240 mm simulated precipitation was assigned to experimental plots by taking the following treatments:(1) P6(6 extreme precipitation events, near the 1^(st) percentile);(2) P10(10 extreme precipitation events, near the 5^(th) percentile);(3) P16(16 moderate precipitation events, near the 50^(th) percentile); and(4) P24(24 events, 60-year average precipitation, near the 50^(th) percentile). At the end of the growing season, we analyzed soil microbial community structure and biomass, bacterial abundance, fungal abundance and bacterial composition, by using phospholipid fatty acid(PLFA), real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction(RT-qPCR) and 16S rRNA gene clone library methods. The extreme precipitation events did not change soil microbial community structure(represented by the ratio of PLFA concentration in fungi to PLFA concentration in bacteria, and the ratio of PLFA concentration in gram-positive bacterial biomass to PLFA concentration in gram-negative bacterial biomass). However, the extreme precipitation events significantly increased soil microbial activity(represented by soil microbial biomass nitrogen and soil bacterial 16S rRNA gene copy numbers). Soil fungal community showed no significant response to precipitation events. According to the redundancy analysis, both soil microbial biomass nitrogen and soil ammonium nitrogen(NH_4-N) were found to be significant in shaping soil microbial community. Acidobacteria, Actinobacteria and Proteobacteria were the dominant phyla in soil bacterial composition, and responded differently to the extreme precipitation events. 2Magnetoresponsive nanozyme:magnetic stimulation on the nanozyme activity of iron oxide nanoparticles显示文摘The iron oxide nanoparticles(IONPs)that combine the nanozyme activity and magnetothermal properties have attracted significant interest for various biomedical applications.However,the effect of magnetic stimulation in fine-tuning the nanozyme activities remains unclear.Here,we have constructed a series of IONPs with different magneto-thermal conversion abilities,and systematically study the effect of magnetic field stimulation on the peroxidase(POD)activity of IONPs.The results show that POD activity is effectively amplified via an in situ alternating magnetic field(AMF)stimulation with no solution temperature rise,and the degree of activity enhancement is closely related to the magnetic heating ability of the IONPs,confirming the origin of activity enhancement arises from the local magnetothermal effect.As the first report to prove magnetothermal regulation on nanozyme activity and to shed lights on the underlying correlation between activity enhancement and the intrinsic specific absorption rate(SAR),this work is expected to provide important support for future design of new magnetoresponsive nanozymes in various practical applications.Yuan He Xiaoyong Chen Ye Zhang Yanyun Wang Mengyao Cui Galong Li Xiaoli Liu Haiming Fan 2022Science China(Life Sciences)2022,65,1:3

5Inhibitor tolerance and bioethanol fermentability of levoglucosan-utilizing Escherichia coli were enhanced by overexpression of stress-responsive gene ycfR:The proteomics-guided metabolic engineering显示文摘Pretreatment of lignocellulosic biomass is crucial for the release of biofermentable sugars for biofuels production,which could greatly alleviate the burgeoning environment and energy crisis caused by the massive usage of traditional fossil fuels.Pyrolysis is a cost-saving pretreatment process that can readily decompose biomass into levoglucosan,a promising anhydrosugar;however,many undesired toxic compounds inhibitory to downstream microbial fermentation are also generated during the pyrolysis,immensely impeding the bioconversion of levoglucosan-containing pyrolysate.Here,we took the first insight into the proteomic responses of a levoglucosan-utilizing and ethanol-producing Escherichia coli to three representative biomass-derived inhibitors,identifying large amounts of differentially expressed proteins(DEPs)that could guide the downstream metabolic engineering for the development of inhibitor-resistant strains.Fifteen up-and eight down-regulated DEPs were further identified as the biomarker stress-responsive proteins candidate for cellular tolerance to multiple inhibitors.Among these biomarker proteins,YcfR exhibiting the highest expression fold-change level was chosen as the target of overexpression to validate proteomics results and develop robust strains with enhanced inhibitor tolerance and fermentation performance.Finally,based on four plasmid-borne genes encoding the levoglucosan kinase,pyruvate decarboxylase,alcohol dehydrogenase,and protein YcfR,a new recombinant strain E.coli LGE-ycfR was successfully created,showing much higher acetic acid-,furfural-,and phenol-tolerance levels compared to the control without overexpression of ycfR.The specific growth rate,final cell density,ethanol concentration,ethanol productivity,and levoglucosan consumption rate of the recombinant were also remarkably improved.From the proteomics-guided metabolic engineering and phenotypic observations,we for the first time corroborated that YcfR is a stress-induced protein responsive to multiple biomass-derived inhibitors,and also developed an inhibitors-resistant strain that could produce bioethanol from levoglucosan in the presence of inhibitors of relatively high concentration.The newly developed E.coli LGE-ycfR strain that could eliminate the commonly-used costly detoxicification processes,is of great potential for the in situ cost-effective bioethanol production from the biomass-derived pyrolytic substrates.Dongdong Chang Zia Ul Islam Junfang Zheng Jie Zhao Xiaoyong Cui Zhisheng Yu 2021Synthetic and Systems Biotechnology2021,6,4:1
6Evenness is important in assessing progress towards sustainable development goals显示文摘Sustainable development goals(SDGs)emphasize a holistic achievement instead of cherry-picking a few.However,no assessment has quantitatively considered the evenness among all 17 goals.Here,we propose a systematic method,which first integrates both the evenness and the overall status of all goals,to distinguish the ideal development pathways from the uneven ones and then revisit the development trajectory in China from 2000 to 2015.Our results suggest that,despite the remarkable progress,a bottleneck has occurred in China since 2013 due to the stagnant developments in some SDGs.However,many far-reaching policies in China have been targeting these deficiencies since then,providing a perspective on how a country approaches sustainable development by promoting evenness among all SDGs.Our results also indicate that regions with the slowest progress are the developed provinces,owing to the persistent uneven status of all goals.Our study demonstrates the importance of adopting evenness in assessing and guiding sustainable development.Yali Liu Jianqing Du Yanfen Wang Xiaoyong Cui Jichang Dong Yanbin Hao Kai Xue Hongbo Duan Anquan Xia Yi Hu Zhi Dong Bingfang Wu Xinquan Zhao Bojie Fu 2021National Science Review2021,8,8:1

16Does College Location Affect the Location Choice of New College Graduates in China?显示文摘Based on a representative survey of new college graduates in China,we present a job location choice model that allows for a self-selection effect in college regions by considering region-dependent heterogeneous preference for job locations and unobservable location features.We also treat endogenous housing costs using the method developed by Berry et al.(1995).Our estimation results show that college education significantly increases graduates'likelihood of working in the city where their college is located.However,a model that does not consider the self-selection effect overestimates this impact.The impact of college location on a graduate's migration decision varies considerably across cities.There is significant heterogeneity between students from universities of dijferent tiers and rural versus urban areas.Meanwhile,the graduates show a marked home preference when choosing their job locations,and they tend to avoid working in cities with high housing costs.These findings shed light on debates on place-based higher education policies and spatial distribution of human capital with a high level of education.Mian Huang Chunbing Xing Xiaoyong Cui 2022China & World Economy2022,30,3:1

18Water resource conservation promotes synergy between economy and environment in China’s northern drylands显示文摘Water resource availability is the major limiting factor for sustainable development in drylands.Climate change intensifies the conflicting water demands between people and the environment and highlights the importance of effective water resource management for achieving a balance between economic development and environmental protection.In 2008,Inner Mongolia,typical dryland in northern China,proposed strict regulations on water exploitation and utilization aimed at achieving sustainable development.Our study is the first to investigate the effectiveness and performance of these long-standing water conservation regulations.Our analyses found that the regulations drove industrial transformation,evidenced by the decreasing proportion of environmentally harmful industries such as coal and steel,and the increasing proportion of tertiary industries(especially tourism).Following industrial transformation,economic development decoupled from industrial water consumption and subsequently led to reduced negative environmental impacts.Based on these results,adaptive strategies were developed for 12 cities by revealing and integrating their development pathways and relative status in achieving sustainable development.Integration and cooperation between cities were proposed,e.g.,a water trade agreement between eastern Inner Mongolia(an economically underdeveloped region with relatively abundant water resources)and central Inner Mongolia(an economically developed region with high water stress).Such an agreement may enable the holistic achievement of sustainable development across regions.By integrating the findings of our research,our study presents a reproducible framework for water-management-based sustainable development strategies in drylands.Yali Liu Jianqing Du Boyang Ding Yuexian Liu Wenjun Liu Anquan Xia Ran Huo Qinwei Ran Yanbin Hao Xiaoyong Cui Yanfen Wang 2022Frontiers of Environmental Science & Engineering2022,16,3:0
