| 1 | Remediation of Heavy Metal-Polluted Agricultural Soils Using Clay Minerals: A Review显示文摘Heavy metal contamination of agricultural soils poses risks and hazards to humans. The remediation of heavy metal-polluted soils has become a hot topic in environmental science and engineering. In this review, the application of clay minerals for the remediation of heavy metal-polluted agricultural soils is summarized, in terms of their remediation effects and mechanisms, influencing factors,and future focus. Typical clay minerals, natural sepiolite, palygorskite, and bentonite, have been widely utilized for the in-situ immobilization of heavy metals in soils, especially Cd-polluted paddy soils and wastewater-irrigated farmland soils. Clay minerals are able to increase soil p H, decrease the chemical-extractable fractions and bioavailability of heavy metals in soils, and reduce the heavy metal contents in edible parts of plants. The immobilization effects have been confirmed in field-scale demonstrations and pot trials. Clay minerals can improve the environmental quality of soils and alleviate the hazards of heavy metals to plants. As main factors affecting the immobilization effects, the p H and water condition of soils have drawn academic attention. The remediation mechanisms mainly include liming, precipitation, and sorption effects. However, the molecular mechanisms of microscopic immobilization are unclear. | 3 | Insight-HXMT observations of the first binary neutron star merger GW170817显示文摘Finding the electromagnetic(EM) counterpart of binary compact star merger, especially the binary neutron star(BNS) merger,is critically important for gravitational wave(GW) astronomy, cosmology and fundamental physics. On Aug. 17, 2017,Advanced LIGO and Fermi/GBM independently triggered the first BNS merger, GW170817, and its high energy EM counterpart,GRB 170817 A, respectively, resulting in a global observation campaign covering gamma-ray, X-ray, UV, optical, IR, radio as well as neutrinos. The High Energy X-ray telescope(HE) onboard Insight-HXMT(Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope) is the unique high-energy gamma-ray telescope that monitored the entire GW localization area and especially the optical counterpart(SSS17 a/AT2017 gfo) with very large collection area(~1000 cm^2) and microsecond time resolution in 0.2-5 MeV. In addition,Insight-HXMT quickly implemented a Target of Opportunity(ToO) observation to scan the GW localization area for potential X-ray emission from the GW source. Although Insight-HXMT did not detect any significant high energy(0.2-5 MeV) radiation from GW170817, its observation helped to confirm the unexpected weak and soft nature of GRB 170817 A. Meanwhile,Insight-HXMT/HE provides one of the most stringent constraints(~10^(-7) to 10^(-6) erg/cm^2/s) for both GRB170817 A and any other possible precursor or extended emissions in 0.2-5 MeV, which help us to better understand the properties of EM radiation from this BNS merger. | 8 | ZBP1(DAI/DLM-1) promotes osteogenic differentiation while inhibiting adipogenic differentiation in mesenchymal stem cells through a positive feedback loop of Wnt/β-catenin signaling显示文摘The lineage specification of mesenchymal stem/stromal cells(MSCs) is tightly regulated by a wide range of factors. Recently, the versatile functions of ZBP1(also known as DAI or DLM-1) have been reported in the blood circulation and immune systems.However, the biological function of ZBP1 during the lineage specification of MSCs is still unknown. In the present study, we found that ZBP1 was upregulated during osteogenesis but downregulated during adipogenesis in mouse bone marrow-derived MSCs(m BMSCs). ZBP1 was highly expressed in osteoblasts but expressed at a relatively low level in marrow adipocytes. Knockdown of ZBP1 inhibited alkaline phosphataseactivity, extracellular matrix mineralization, and osteogenesis-related gene expression in vitro and reduced ectopic bone formation in vivo. Knockdown of ZBP1 also promoted adipogenesis in MSCs in vitro. Conversely, the overexpression of ZBP1 increased the osteogenesis but suppressed the adipogenesis of MSCs. When the expression of ZBP1 was rescued, the osteogenic capacity of ZBP1-depleted m BMSCs was restored at both the molecular and phenotypic levels.Furthermore, we demonstrated that ZBP1, a newly identified target of Wnt/β-catenin signaling, was required for β-catenin translocation into nuclei. | 9 | Optical observations of LIGO source GW 170817 by the Antarctic Survey Telescopes at Dome A,Antarctica显示文摘The LIGO detection of gravitational waves(GW) from merging black holes in 2015 marked the beginning of a new era in observational astronomy. The detection of an electromagnetic signal from a GW source is the critical next step to explore in detail the physics involved. The Antarctic Survey Telescopes(AST3),located at Dome A, Antarctica, is uniquely situated for rapid response time-domain astronomy with its continuous night-time coverage during the austral winter. We report optical observations of the GW source(GW 170817) in the nearby galaxy NGC 4993 using AST3. The data show a rapidly fading transient at around 1 day after the GW trigger, with the i-band magnitude declining from 17:23 ± 0:13 magnitude to 17:72 ± 0:09 magnitude in ~1:8 h. The brightness and time evolution of the optical transient associated with GW 170817 are broadly consistent with the predictions of models involving merging binary neutron stars. | 16 | Sucrose Secreted by the Engineered Cyanobacterium and Its Fermentability显示文摘The unicellular cyanobacterium, Synechococcus elongatus PCC 7942(Syn7942), synthesizes sucrose as the only compatible solute under salt stress. A series of engineered Syn7942 strains for sucrose production were constructed. The overexpression of the native sps(encoding a natively fused protein of sucrose phosphate synthase SPS and sucrose phosphate phosphatase SPP) in Syn7942 wild type caused a 93% improvement of sucrose productivity. The strain FL130 co-overexpressing sps and csc B(encoding a sucrose transporter) exhibited a 74% higher extracellular sucrose production than that overexpressing csc B only. Both results showed the significant improvement of sucrose productivity by the double functional protein SPS-SPP. Afterwards, FL130 was cultivated under a modified condition, and the cell-free culture medium containing 1.5 g L-1 sucrose was pre-treated with an acid hydrolysis technique. Cultivated with the neutralized hydrolysates as the starting media, two widely used microorganisms, Escherichia coli and Saccharomyces cerevisiae, showed a comparable growth with that in the control media supplemented with glucose. To identify the nature and timing of interventions to reduce methane emissions requires knowledge of temporal kinetics of methane emissions during animal husbandry.Accordingly, a mathematical model was developed to investigate the pattern of enteric methane emissions after feeding in dairy cows. The model facilitated estimation of total enteric methane emissions(V,g) produced by the residual substrate(V1, g) and newly ingested feed(V2, g). The model was fitted to the10 h methane emission patterns after morning feeding of 16 non-lactating dairy cows with various body weights(BW), and the obtained parameters were used to predict the kinetics of 24 h methane emission for each animal. The rate of methane emission(g/h) reached a maximum within 1 to 2 h after feeding,followed by a gradual post-prandial decline to a basal value before the next feeding. The model satisfactorily fitted curves for each cow according to the criterion of goodness-of-fit, and provided biological descriptions for fluctuations in methane emissions based on basal V1 and feeding V2 in response to the changes in BW and dry matter intake(DMI) of different dairy cows. The basal V1 and feeding V2 are probably maintained by slow-and readily-degradable substrates, respectively. The former contributed at least 0.6 of methane production. | 18 | 显示恶性孤立肺结节分叶征的理想CT层厚(英文)显示文摘Objective: The aim of this study was to determine an optimal slice thickness that was efficient in revealing lobulation of malignant solitary pulmonary nodules (SPNs) on multi-slice spiral computed tomography (MSCT) images preliminarily. Methods: Fifty patients with malignant SPNs (diameter ≤ 3 cm) underwent multidetector-row computed tomography of the chest in a single-breath-hold technique. The raw data were acquired with a collimation of 0.625 mm. Three sets of contiguous images were reconstructed with 1-, 2-, and 5-mm slice thickness, respectively. The lobulation sign of SPNs on the computed tomography (CT) images presented in 1-, 2-, and 5-mm slice thickness was compared. Using the 1-mm sections as the gold standard, an optimal slice thickness in revealing lobulation sign of SPNs was determined. Results: The 1-mm-thick images CT revealed 98 lobulations (25 with chord distance < 1 mm; 30 with chord distance 1-2 mm; 43 with chord distance > 2 mm) of 45 malignant SPNs. 18 lobulations with chord distance < 1 mm presented in 2-mm-thick sections were as same as those in 1-mm-thick sections. Statistically significant difference in lobulations number was found between that revealed in 2-mm-thick images and that in 1-mm-thick images (P = 0.023 < 0.05). 16 lobulations with chord distance < 1 mm presented in 5-mm-thick sections were as same as that in 1-mm-thick sections. There was statistically significant difference in lobulations number between that revealed in 5-mm-thick images and that in 1-mm-thick images (P = 0.004 < 0.05). The 24 lobulations with chord distance 1-2 mm presented in 2-mm-thick sections were as same as that in 1-mm-thick sections. No statistically significant difference in lobulations number were found between that revealed in 2-mm-thick images and that in 1-mm-thick images (P = 0.261 > 0.05). 13 lobulations with chord distance 1-2 mm presented in 5-mm-thick sections were as same as that in 1-mm-thick sections. There was statistically significant difference in lobulations number between that revealed in 5-mm-thick images and that in 1-mm-thick images (P = 0.003 < 0.05). 40 lobulations with chord distance ﹥2 mm presented in 2-mm-thick sections were as same as that in 1-mm-thick sections. No statistically significant difference in lobulations number was found between that revealed in 2-mm-thick images and that in 1-mm-thick images (P = 0.631 > 0.05). 36 lobulations with chord distance ﹥2 mm presented in 5-mm-thick sections were as same as that in 1-mm-thick sections. Conclusion: It is suggested that the use of 1-mm slice thickness is suitable in revealing lobulations with chord distance < 1 mm.
