| 2 | Neuroinflammation in Parkinson’s disease and its potential as therapeutic target显示文摘Parkinson’s disease(PD),the second most common age-associated neurodegenerative disorder,is characterized by the loss of dopaminergic(DA)neurons and the presence ofα-synuclein-containing aggregates in the substantia nigra pars compacta(SNpc).Chronic neuroinflammation is one of the hallmarks of PD pathophysiology.Postmortem analyses of human PD patients and experimental animal studies indicate that activation of glial cells and increases in pro-inflammatory factor levels are common features of the PD brain.Chronic release of proinflammatory cytokines by activated astrocytes and microglia leads to the exacerbation of DA neuron degeneration in the SNpc.Besides,peripheral immune system is also implicated in the pathogenesis of PD.Infiltration and accumulation of immune cells from the periphery are detected in and around the affected brain regions of PD patients.Moreover,inflammatory processes have been suggested as promising interventional targets for PD and even other neurodegenerative diseases.A better understanding of the role of inflammation in PD will provide new insights into the pathological processes and help to establish effective therapeutic strategies.In this review,we will summarize recent progresses in the neuroimmune aspects of PD and highlight the potential therapeutic interventions targeting neuroinflammation. | Qinqin Wang Yingjun Liu Jiawei Zhou | 2015 | Translational Neurodegeneration2015,4,1: | 25 |
| 3 | Common-anode LED on a Si substrate for beyond 15 Gbit/s underwater visible light communication显示文摘Visible light communication based on light-emitting diodes(LEDs) has become a promising candidate by providing high data rates, low latency, and secure communication for underwater environments. In this paper,a self-designed common-anode GaN-based five-primary-color LED(RGBYC LED) on a Si substrate is proposed and fabricated. The design of a common anode is used to mitigate the saturation effect for a low-frequency component. Additionally, compared with commercially available LEDs that suffer from nonlinearity distortion,applying the designed LED can provide much better and broader linearity according to the measurement results.Therefore, the modulation depth and system performance can be further improved to implement a high-speed underwater visible light communication(UVLC) system. There is no nonlinearity compensation algorithm applied due to the good linearity of the proposed LED;thus, the offline digital signal processing is simplified. | 4 | Response of Pinus taiwanensis growth to climate changes at its southern limit of Daiyun Mountain, China's Mainland Fujian Province显示文摘The Pinus taiwanensis trees of a Chinese endemic species form pure forests at infertile sites in humid subtropical China, which can aid soil reservation and ecological resiliency at such sites. Herein, we used dendrochronological methods to investigate the growth patterns and their relationship with climate by analyzing 158 cores of 79 P. taiwanensis trees at 4 sites in their southernmost distribution in China's Mainland at Daiyun Mountain in Fujian Province. Tree growths at sites with favorable conditions generally showed an age-related growth trend, which decreased from approximately 5 mm to 0.5 mm in about a century. Trees in moderately stressed environments established high growth in their juvenile periods but were highly susceptible to environmental stresses such as a sharp growth decline in the 1990 s. The temperature in February and the moisture in July are the major limiting factors for most of the tree growths, except for a few extremely stressed P. taiwanensis trees. The growth of the dwarf P. taiwanensis trees, with all ring diameters of the first 20 years less than 4 mm, is mainly limited by the dry climate in May. | 5 | Historical trends in the anthropogenic heavy metal levels in the tidal flat sediments of Lianyungang, China显示文摘The sedimentation of metals can preserve the historical record of contaminant input from local and regional sources and provide information on the historical changes in regionalwater and sediment quality. We report the 210Pb activities and the heavy metal (Cd, Cr, Cu, Mn, Pb and Zn)depth profiles from sediment cores retrieved in 2010. The mean sedimentation rates of 0.85-1.5 cm/yr aredetermined by 210 Pbdating. The sediments in the tidal flat have recorded heavy metaldeposition and thus allow the establishment of a connection between the temporal evolution of the heavy metal pollution and the historical changes in the economicdevelopment of Lianyungang. The enrichment factors (EF) are calculated to estimate the level of contamination stored in these sediments. The results show that in the studied sites, Cr and Cudisplay low EF values and are mainly from lithogenic origin. For the other studied trace metals, a great variability in the sedimentary record is observed. Significant anthropogenic enrichment over the last 50 years is revealed at the tidal flat that receives fluvial inputs. Zinc is the elementwith the highest EF values, followed by the order of Pb > Cd > Mn > Cu and Cr. The temporal variations of the heavy metals peakduring the late 1980s to the early2000s and show adecreasing trend afterward. | 11 | Grassland management practices in Chinese steppes impact productivity, diversity and the relationship显示文摘Grasslands are crucial parts of the terrestrial ecosystem, with an extremely high differentiation of productivity and diversity across spatial scales and land use patterns. The practices employed to manage grassland,such as grazing, haymaking, fertilization or reseeding, can improve the grassland condition. This study focuses on the changes in productivity and diversity and the relationship between them as affected by management practices.Productivity and diversity have unequivocally been altered in response to different management practices. When grazing intensity of a typical steppe increased from 1.5 to 9 sheep per hectare, both productivity and diversity declined.Higher grazing intensity(6 to 9 sheep per hectare)accelerated loss of diversity because of lower productivity.Productivity was significantly improved but diversity was lost by fertilizing. N fertilization also reduced the sensitivity of diversity to productivity. A similar response was found in mown grassland with increased productivity and diversity but their relationship was negatively affected.Mowing also slowed down the decline in diversity as productivity increased. Reseeding purple-flowered alfalfa led to an increased diversity, while yellow-flowered alfalfa increased productivity significantly. The negative productivity-diversity relationship was transformed to a positive one by reseeding alfalfa. | 19 | Opposite Regulation of Chondrogenesis and Angiogenesis in Cartilage Repair ECM Materials under Hypoxia显示文摘Although cartilage tissue engineering has been developed for decades, it is still unclear whether angiogenesis was the accompaniment of chondrogenesis in cartilage regeneration. This study aimed to explore the process of anti-angiogenesis during cartilage regenerative progress in cartilage repair extracellular matrix(ECM) materials under Hypoxia. C3H10T1/2 cell line, seeded as pellet or in ECM materials, was added with chondrogenic medium or DMEM medium for 21 days under hypoxia or normoxia environment. Genes and mi RNAs related with chondrogenesis and angiogenesis were detected by RT-q PCR technique on Days 7, 14, and 21. Dual-luciferase report system was used to explore the regulating roles of mi RNAs on angiogenesis. Results showed that the chondrogenic medium promotes chondrogenesis both in pellet and ECM materials culture. HIF1α was up-regulated under hypoxia compared with normoxia(P < 0.05). Meanwhile, hypoxia enhanced chondrogenesis. miR-140-5p exhibited higher expression while miR-146 b exhibited lower expression. The chondrogenic phenotype was more stabilized in the ECM materials in chondrogenic medium than DMEM medium, with lower VEGFα expression even under hypoxia.Dual-luciferase report assays demonstrated that mi R-140-5p directly targets VEGFα by binding its 3′-UTR.
