Screen-imaging guidance using a modified portable video macroscope for middle cerebral artery occlusion显示文摘The use of operating microscopes is limited by the focal length.Surgeons using these instruments cannot simultaneously view and access the surgical field and must choose one or the other. The longer focal length (more than 1 000 mm) of an operating telescope permits a position away from the operating field, above the surgeon and out of the field of view. This gives the telescope an advantage over an operating microscope. We developed a telescopic system using screen-imaging guidance and a modified portable video macroscope constructed from a Computar MLH-10 × macro lens,a DFK-21AU04 USB CCD Camera and a Dell laptop computer as monitor screen. This system was used to establish a middle cerebral artery occlusion model in rats. Results showed that magnification of the modified portable video macroscope was appropriate (5-20 ×) even though the Computar MLH-10 × macro lens was placed 800 mm away from the operating field rather than at the specified working distance of 152.4 mm with a zoom of 1-40 ×.The screen-imaging telescopic technique was clear,life-like,stereoscopic and matched the actual operation.Screen-imaging guidance led to an accurate, smooth, minimally invasive and comparatively easy surgical procedure.Success rate of the model establishment evaluated by neurological function using the modified neurological score system was 74.07%.There was no significant difference in model establishment time, sensorimotor deficit and infarct volume percentage. Our findings indicate that the telescopic lens is effective in the screen surgical operation mode referred to as 'long distance observation and short distance operation' and that screen-imaging guidance using an modified portable video macroscope can be utilized for the establishment of a middle cerebral artery occlusion model and micro-neurosurgery.Xingbao Zhu Junli Luo Yun Liu Guolong Chen Song Liu Qiangjin Ruan Xunding Deng Dianchun Wang Quanshui Fan Xinghua Pan 2012Neural Regeneration Research2012,7,12:6
Poststroke DNA immunization against neurite growth inhibitors is beneficial to the recovery from local cerebral ischemia in rats显示文摘BACKGROUND: Inhibitory signals, i.e. neurite growth inhibitors (NGIs), presenting on central nervous system (CNS) myelin have been shown to play a crucial role in inhibiting lesioned axonal sprouting and leading to less functional recovery. Vaccines targeting NGIs may provide multifactorial protection against brain insults by overcoming the inhibitory effects of these NGIs and boosting the body's immune repair mechanisms. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of poststroke DNA immunization against NGIs on the rehabilitation for sensorimotor function of rat models of local cerebral ischemia. DESIGN: Completely randomized grouping design, and controlled experiment. SETTING: Brain Injury Research Laboratory, Department of Neurosurgery, National Neuroscience Institute, Singapore. MATERIALS: Sixty adult male Sprague-Dawley rats ranging in age from 45 to 120 days and in weight from 180 to 250 grams were provided by Animal Center of Department of Anatomy, Faculty of Medicine, National University of Singapore. pcDNA3.1(+)-neurite growth inhibitors (pcDNA-NGIs) a gift was provided by Dr. Xiao from Department of Clinical Research, Singapore General Hospital, Singapore. METHODS: The experiment was carried out at Brain Injury Research Laboratory, Department of Neurosurgery, National Neuroscience Institute, Singapore from August 2003 to April 2005. ①The involved rats were randomized into 3 groups: pcDNA-NGIs group (group A), pcDNA3.1 (+) group (group B) and model group (group C), with 20 rats in each group. Left focal cerebral ischemia (FCI) was permanently induced through middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) with the assistance of an operating microscope. Successful MCAO was determined by a 20% decrease to baseline in the ipsilateral cerebral blood flow. 100 μg of pcDNA-NGIs eluted in phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) was intramuscularly injected into the tibial muscle once a week after MCAO for 6 weeks in group A. As control, pcDNA3.1 (+) was also administrated in the same way in group B and nothing was administrated in group C. ② The modified neurological severity score (mNSS), a composite of motor, sensory, reflex and balance tests, was used to test the sensorimotor deficit. The mNSS was graded on a scale of 0–18, i.e. normal score was 0, maximal deficit score was 18, and 1 point was warded for the inability to perform the tasks or the lack of a tested reflex. ③ The newly generated axons of corticorubral projection were traced by stereotaxic guided injection of 100 g/L biotinylated dextran amine. Rats were sacrificed two weeks after tracing, and cryostat coronal sections of midbrains (30 μm) were reacted to BDA according to the manufacturer's instruction by the free-floating method. Images were captured on a DM RXA2 LEICA Microscope with a Spot Digital Camera system (Germany), and the numbers of labeled axons on the denervated side in four standard coronal sections including the red nucleus were manually quantified. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: ① The number of newly generated axons of corticorubral projection. ②The improvement in sensorimotor deficit. RESULTS: All the involved 60 rats entered the stage of final analysis. ① The number of newly generated axons of corticorubral projection of rats: Only ipsilateral axons of CRP were noted with little evidence of fibers crossing to the contralateral red nucleus in rats of groups B and C. More BDA-positive fibers crossing the midline and terminating in the contralateral red nucleus in appropriate target areas mirroring thenon-differentiated red nucleus were found in rats of group A. Quantitative analysis showed that BDA-labeled axons in the denervated side of rats in group A were more than those in group B (P < 0.05). ② Improvement in sensorimotor deficit of rats: At 2 weeks after immunization, significant improvement in sensorimotor deficit was found in rats of group A. There were significant differences of improvement in sensorimotor deficit of rats between group A and group B or group C at 12 and 14 weeks after immunization (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: ① Poststroke DNA immunization against NGIs leads to increased sensorimotor recovery following FCI and compensatory newly growth of axons from corticorubral projection.Xingbao Zhu Jasmine Lee Jill Wong Wan Loo Tan Zhongtang Feng Tinghua Wang Zhicheng Xiao Ivan Ng 2007Neural Regeneration Research2007,2,2:3

The Impact of Assimilating Radar-estimated Rain Rates on Simulation of Precipitation in the 17-18 July 1996 Chicago Floods显示文摘Rainfall prediction remains one of the most challenging problems in weather forecasting. In order to improve high-resolution quantitative precipitation forecasts (QPF), a new procedure for assimilating rainfall rate derived from radar composite reflectivity has been proposed and tested in a numerical simulation of the Chicago floods of 17–18 July 1996. The methodology is based on the one-dimensional variation scheme (1DVAR) assimilation approach introduced by Fillion and Errico but applied here using the Kain-Fritsch convective parameterization scheme (KF CPS). The novel feature of this work is the continuous assimilation of radar estimated rain rate over a three hour period, rather than a single assimilation at the initial (analysis) time. Most of the characteristics of this precipitation event, including the propagation, regeneration of mesoscale convective systems, the frontal boundary across the Midwest and the evolution of the low-level jet are better captured in the simulation as the radar-estimated precipitation rate is assimilated. The results indicate that precipitation assimilation during the early stage can improve the simulated mesoscale feature of the convection system and shorten the spin-up time significantly. Comparison of precipitation forecasts between the experiments with and without the 1DVAR indicates that the 1DVAR scheme has a positive impact on the QPF up to 36 hours in terms of the bias and bias equalized threat scores.Xingbao WANG M. 7THE DEVELOPMENT OF SYMMETRIC DISTURBANCE SUPERPOSED ON BAROCLINIC FRONTAL ZONE UNDER THE ACTION OF DEFORMATION FIELD显示文摘The development of symmetric disturbance superposed on the background field of Hoskins-Bretherton (1972) frontogenesis model is investigated by means of WKBJ approach. It is found that the forcing of large-scale deformation, the frontal circulation and the spatial-temporal variations of stability parameters (F2, N2, M2) can bring about the development of symmetric disturbance, even though the frontal baroclinic flow is symmetric stable (F2N2- M2 =q > 0). The frontogenetical process of deformation confluence zone and the ascending branch of frontal circulation are in favor of the development of symmetric disturbance. The actions of ageostrophic shear in frontal zone and the variation of stability parameters are dependent on the structure of disturbance.WANG Xingbao(王兴宝) WU Rongsheng(伍荣生) 2001Acta meteorologica Sinica2001,15,4:1

Occlusion of the middle cerebral artery Guidance by screen imaging using an EDA-H portable medium-soft electronic endoscope显示文摘The present study aimed to verify the practicability of performing screen-based surgical operations under the guidance of a real-time viewing and recording system (RTVRS) using a portable medium-soft electronic endoscope (pmsEE).The middle cerebral artery in rats was occluded under screen-imaging guidance using a pmsEE RTVRS to reproduce an animal model of human cerebral infarction. The screen imaging of the pmsEE RTVRS was clear,life-like,stereoscopic and synchronous with the actual operation.Screen-imaging guidance led to an accurate, smooth, minimally invasive and comparatively easy surgical procedure. The surgical success rate, time of model establishment, neurological function scores, and infarct volume were similar to those using an operating microscope. These results indicate that the self-designed pmsEE RTVRS could be utilized for portable endoscopic screen-based surgical operations.Xingbao Zhu Junli Luo Song Liu Dongping Li Min Li Quanshui Fan 2011Neural Regeneration Research2011,6,23:1
Release of elements from municipal solid waste incineration fly ash显示文摘The element-release behavior of municipal solid waste incineration fly ash was explored through leaching test with continuous set-point pH(pH_(stat) test)and serial single reaction cell(SSRC)tests.First, the relationship between element release and acid neutralizing capacity(ANC)consumption was examined with a pHstat test.Four types of release behaviors were identified which are characteristic for different elements:(1)release curves that were almost linear with ANC consumption(Ca,Zn,and Cd);(2)release that was significantly faster than ANC(Na,K,and Cl);(3)curves that featured a strong increase with ANC consumption, after a transient release, followed by an almost equal decrease(Si and S);and(4)release that is strongly retarded compared with ANC consumption(Cr,Cu,and Pb).In the SSRC system,it the existence of a pH front and a wash-out phenomenon is demonstrated.Combining the results from the SSRC test with the kinetic analysis of the ANC system in the pH_(stat) test,it was inferred that less than one-third of the ANC measured from a batch pH titration plays a neutralization role in a field situation. The methodologies described may provide a powerful set of tools for systematic evaluation of element release from solid wastes.Wei WANG Lei ZHENG Feng WANG Xiao WAN Keqing YIN Xingbao GAO 2010Frontiers of Environmental Science & Engineering2010,4,4:1
