| 2 | Use of Biotic Community Structure as a Measure of Ecological Degradation显示文摘The benthic macroinvertebrate communities of two lotic aquatic habitats,namely,the Churni River(C-R)and the Jalangi River(J-R)were compared in this study.One lotic aquatic system(C-R)was polluted by organic pollutants due to discharge of unprocessed sewage water,while the other(J-R)was not affected by such pollution.Evaluations of various physico-chemical properties of water,sediment and different macroinvertebrate communities of the two tropical lotic systems were done in a period from January,2002 to December,2003.A long term temporal change in the macroinvertebrate communities was recorded due to increase in sediment rH value.Sediment redox potential affected by the anthropogenic activities was found to be an important factor for alteration of macroinvertebrate communities in these aquatic ecosystems.A positive correlation has been established between rH and Margalef index in this study.Potassium and the total count of coliform bacteria in water showed significantly higher values for the polluted Churni River than those for the Jalangi River.Fig 3,Tab 4,Ref | SANJIB Kumar Das DIBYENDU Biswas SUDIPTO Roy | 2007 | 应用与环境生物学报2007,13,5: | 3 |

| 5 | Productivity, quality and soil health as influenced by lime in ricebean cultivars in foothills of northeastern India显示文摘To evaluate the response to lime on cultivars of ricebean(Vigna umbellata), a field experiment was conducted during the two consecutive rabi seasons of 2010–2011 and 2011–2012 in the Nagaland foothills, India. The experiment used a split-plot design with four levels of lime(control, 0.2, 0.4and 0.6 t ha-1) in main plots and four ricebean cultivars(RBS-16, RBS-53, PRR-2, and RCRB-4) in sub-plots with three replicates. The results revealed that increasing levels of lime(in the furrow)from 0 to 0.6 t ha-1significantly increased growth, yield attributes and yield. The quality parameters of ricebean were also influenced significantly by the application of lime. Maximum gross return(INR 39,098 ha-1), net return(INR 27,281 ha-1), benefit:cost(B:C) ratio(2.29),production efficiency, and economic efficiency were also realized with the application of lime at 0.6 t ha-1. Among the ricebean cultivars, RBS-53 produced significantly higher growth, yield attributes, grain yield, straw yield, biological yield, and harvest index. Similarly, yield and protein content were higher in RBS-53. | 6 | Phytoplanktonic Community of Organically Polluted Tropical Reservoirs in Eastern India显示文摘Plankton communities of three reservoirs of India reflect the direct relationship with organic pollution. The assessment of water quality as highly or lowly organically polluted for the three water bodies has been achieved with help of algal community, which can be used as an indicator of organic pollution. Algal pollution indices according to Palmer[1] and Watanabe[2] and based on genus and species were used in rating water samples for high or low organic pollution. Among 26 genera of algae found in India, 20 most frequent and common genera were taken into account for indexing pollution status. Water quality index (WQI) on the basis of weighting and rating of the chemical parameter was also used to correlate the Palmer index with physico-chemical parameters of the three reservoirs. | 7 | Abundance and habitat-suitability relationship deteriorate in fragmented forest landscapes:a case of Adinandra griffithii Dyer,a threatened endemic tree from Meghalaya in northeast India显示文摘Introduction:A strong positive‘abundance and habitat-suitability’relationship is crucial for conservation of species.Nevertheless,anthropogenic alteration of natural landscapes leading to land use and land cover change,habitat loss,and species extinctions(may)have putatively disturbed this relationship.Hence,it is important to study the nature of the relationship in such human influenced landscapes.Methods:In this study,we endeavored to understand the consistency of the relationship in the fragmented natural landscapes in the Khasi,Garo,and Jaintia hills of Meghalaya in northeast India,with Adinandra griffithii(an endangered endemic tree)as a model species.We reconstructed the distribution of its suitable habitats as a function of the remotely sensed vegetation phenology(i.e.,EVI data),using point occurrence data and ecological niche modeling(ENM)tool.Estimation of the abundance and habitat characterization was done through field surveys following standard methods.Results:The study revealed that remotely sensed landscape-level vegetation phenology could effectively discriminate the suitable and unsuitable habitats of threatened species.Linear regression model showed a weak positive correlation between abundance and predicted habitat suitability for adult trees indicating(plausible)deterioration in the relationship.However,sapling and seedling populations did not show a precise trend in this respect.Field-based studies revealed that removal of the species from the suitable habitats because of anthropogenic disturbances possibly weakened the abundance-suitability relationship.Conclusions:The findings of the study enjoin the need for re-establishment of the species in the suitable areas for its conservation and perpetuation. | Dibyendu Adhikari Aabid Hussain Mir Krishna Upadhaya Viheno Iralu Dilip Kumar Roy | 2018 | Ecological Processes2018,7,1: | 0 |
| 8 | Natural contamination of human hands with enteric parasites in Indian Subcontinent显示文摘AIM: To investigate the prevalence of enteric parasite contamination on hands and the potential role naturally contaminated hands may have in their transmission. METHODS: Prior to initiating the survey, the protocol was reviewed and approved by respective Institutional Review Boards of each survey site(Dhaka, Bangladesh and Kolkata, India). Both stool and corresponding hand wash samples collected, were analyzed for the presence of enteric parasitic ova/(oo)cysts employing conventional microscopy coupled with permanent staining techniques. Additionally molecular approachessuch as polymerase chain reaction(PCR) of enteric parasites recovered from both stool and corresponding hand wash samples, were also used to further confirm their identity. RESULTS: A total of 972 stool samples were collected from both sites surveyed(300 volunteers from Kolkata, India and 672 from Dhaka, Bangladesh). Parasitic analysis revealed, 113(38%) from Kolkata, India and 267(40%) of stool samples from Dhaka, Bangladesh were positive for parasitic ova/(oo)cysts. When the corresponding hand wash samples were analyzed, 43(14%) stool-positive volunteers in Kolkata, India and 47(7%) in Dhaka, Bangladesh were positive for enteric parasitic ova/(oo)cysts. Ascaris lumbricoides(A. lumbricoides) ova and Giardia lamblia(G. lamblia) cysts predominated in hands wash samples from both sites surveyed(from India, A. lumbricoides ova, 53%; G. lamblia cysts 31% and from Bangladesh, A. lumbricoides ova, 47%; G. lamblia cysts 19%). Genotypic analysis of enteric parasitic ova/(oo)cysts obtained from both stool and corresponding hand wash samples taken from the same person were found to be identical.
