Opposing intraspecific vs.interspecific diversity effects on herbivory and growth in subtropical experimental tree assemblages显示文摘Aims Positive plant diversity-ecosystem function relations are ultimately driven by variation in functional traits among individuals that form a community. To date, research has largely focused on the role of species diversity for ecosystem functioning. However, substantial intraspecific trait variation is common and a significant part of this variation caused by genetic differences among individuals. Here,we studied the relative importance of species diversity and seed family(SF)diversity within species for growth and herbivory in experimental subtropical tree assemblages. Methods In 2010,we set up a field experiment in subtropical China, using four species from the local species pool.Trees were raised from seeds, with seeds from the same mother tree forming an SF.We established 23 plots containing one or four species(species diversity treatment)and one or four SFs per species(SF diversity treatment).Tree growth(stem diameter, plant height and crown expansion)and herbivory(percentage leaf loss due to leaf chewers)were monitored annually from 2011 to 2013.Important findings Tree species richness promoted growth but had no effect on herbivory. In contrast,SF diversity reduced growth and increased herbivory but only so in species mixtures. Most of the observed effects were time dependent, with the largest effect found in 2013.Our results suggest that biodiversity can affect plant performance directly via tree species-species interactions,or context dependent, via potential effects on inter-trophic interactions. Two important conclusions should be drawn from our findings.Firstly,in future studies regarding biodiversity and ecosystem functioning(BEF)relationships, intraspecific genetic diversity should be given similar weight as species diversity as it has often been neglected and its effects are not well understood.Secondly,we demonstrate opposite effects of biodiversity among and within species, stressing the importance to consider the effects of multiple levels of biodiversity simultaneously. | Christoph Z.Hahn Pascal A.Niklaus Helge Bruelheide Stefan G.Michalski Miaomiao Shi Xuefei Yang Xueqin Zeng Markus Fischer Walter Durka | 2017 | Journal of Plant Ecology2017,10,1: | 11
Dynamic contrast-enhanced MR imaging findings of bone metastasis in patients with prostate cancer显示文摘AIM:To evaluate the dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (DCE-MRI) findings of bone metastasis in prostate cancer patients.METHODS:Sixteen men with a diagnosis of metastatic prostate cancer to bones were examined with DCE-MRI at 1.5 Tesla. The mean contrast agent concentration vs time curves for bone metastasis and normal bone were calculated and K trans and ve values were estimated and compared.RESULTS:An early significant enhancement (wash-out:n=6,plateau:n=8 and persistent:n=2) was detected in all bone metastases (n=16).Bone metastasis from prostate cancer showed significant enhancementand high K trans and ve values compared to normal bone which does not enhance in the elderly population. The mean K trans was 0.101/mmiinn and 0.0051/mmiinn (P < 0.001),the mean ve was 0.141 and 0.0038 (P < 0.001),for bone metastases and normal bone, respectively. | Arda Kayhan Cheng Yang Fatma Nur Soylu Hatice Lakadamyal Ila Sethi Gregory Karczmar Walter Stadler Aytekin Oto | 2011 | World Journal of Radiology2011,3,10: | 5

Numerical simulation of sedimentation of microparticles usingthe discrete particle method显示文摘A mathematical model has been formulated based on the combined continuous and discrete particle method for investigating the sedimentation behaviour of microparticles in aqueous suspensions,by treating the fluid phase as continuous and the particles phase as discrete, thus allowing the behaviour of individual particles to be followed and the evolution of the structure of the particle phase to be investigated as a function of time. The model takes into account most of the prevailing forces acting on individual particles including van der Waals attractive, electrostatic repulsive, gravitational,Brownian, depletion, steric, contact and drag forces.A code has also been developed based on the model. This paper reports some preliminary modelling results of mono-dispersed microparticles settling in aqueous suspensions under various conditions. The results show the short time dynamics of the fluid phase, which has a similar order of magnitude to the particle phase.Such short time dynamics could bear significance to processes such as particle aggregation when their size becomes very small.Preliminary analyses of the results have also been carried out on the evolution of particle settling based on a newly proposed parameter, local normalised volume fraction(LNVF). | Chane-Yuan Yang Yulong Ding Dave York Walter Broeckx | 2008 | Particuology2008,6,1: | 2

Phytoplankton and chlorophyll a relationships with ENSO in Prydz Bay, East Antarctica显示文摘The historical data of phytoplankton and chlorophyll a(Chl a)(1990–2002)obtained during the Chinese National Antarctic Research Expedition(CHINARE)in the Prydz Bay have been integrated. The results showed that the temperature, salinity, nutrients, and oxygen of seawater changed when El Nino/La Nina occurred. The variation of biological communities reflected the response of ecosystem to environmental changes.During El Ni?o period,Chl a concentration and phytoplankton community structure changed significantly, and the relative proportion of diatoms increased while dinoflagellates decreased.During La Ni?a period, the proportion of diatoms decreased, but the golden-brown algae and blue-green algae increased significantly. The variation of phytoplankton population directly affected the biodiversity of the bay, which were also quite sensitive to the marine environment changes.Meanwhile, the satellite remote sensing data of 2002–2011(December–March)have been used to study the temporal connection change of Chl a and phytoplankton in the Prydz Bay.We found that there were significant differences in the monthly variation characteristics of satellite remote sensing Chl a and sea surface temperature(SST),which had some links with sea ice melting and El Ni?o/La Ni?a events. We found that the start time of bloom advanced, lagged or synchronized with the changes of the SST,and we also found the occurrence time of phytoplankton bloom corresponded with the sea ice melting inner bay.To some extent, this study will help us understand the relationships between ENSO events and the phytoplankton bloom in the Southern Ocean. | ZHANG HaiSheng HAN ZhengBing ZHAO Jun YU PeiSong HU ChuanYu SUN WeiPing Yang Dan ZHU GenHai LU Bing Hans-UIrich PETER Walter VETTER | 2014 | Science China Earth Sciences2014,57,12: | 1

The basis of a more contagious 501Y.V1 variant of SARS-CoV-2显示文摘Dear Editor,The SARS-CoV-2 virus has infected over one hundred million people(COVID-19 patients)and caused more than two million deaths to date. The number of infected people continues to grow quickly, emphasizing the need for rapid use of effective vaccines.Although two mRNA vaccines based on Spike protein(produced by Pfizer-BioNTech and MODERNA)have been approved for emergency use in the US,1,2 the increasing Spike variants that have appeared around the world raise concerns about the continued efficacy of the vaccines.3 Monoclonal antibodies, developed by Regeneron and Eli Lilly, specifically targeting the native form of Spike have been approved by the FDA for emergency use.4,5 An N501Y variant(Y501)of the Spike protein of SARS-CoV-2(B.1.1.7,20I/501Y.V1),first emerged in UK and has now spread to the rest of the world. This variant appears to be much more contagious than the original N501 version.3 Furthermore,Y501 mutation is also found in a variant(B.1.351,20H/501Y.V2)from South Africa and a variant(P1,20J/501Y.V3)from Brazil.3 Unfortunately, this mutation is located at the interaction surface between the RBD and human Angiotensin Converting Enzyme 2(ACE2).6 Thus, the Y501 variation present in B.1.1.7,20I/501Y.V1 might affect the binding ability of the RBD to bind ACE2.We therefore compared the binding affinity of N501 and Y501 RBD for ACE2,uncovering that the affinity for ACE2 of the Y501-RBD was~10 fold higher than that of the N501 version. This may account,at least in part, for the greater infectivity of SARS-CoV-2 with this mutation.Structural modeling data showed that Y501-RBD can form an additional aromatic ring–ring interaction and an additional hydrogen bond with ACE2 by comparison with the RBD of the wild type.In spite of this, sera from individuals immunized with the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine still efficiently block ACE2 binding to Y501-RBD.Furthermore,Bamlanivimab,the recently FDA approved therapeutic antibody drug for treatment of COVID-19 patients4 still binds the variant Y501-RBD as efficiently as it binds the N501-RBD,giving hope that treatment with the existing monoclonal antibodies may still help COVID-19 patients. | Haolin Liu Qianqian Zhang Pengcheng Wei Zhongzhou Chen Katja Aviszus John Yang Walter Downing Chengyu Jiang Bo Liang Lyndon Reynoso Gregory PDowney Stephen KFrankel John Kappler Philippa Marrack Gongyi Zhang | 2021 | Cell Research2021,31,6: | 1

Proposed nomenclature for Pseudallescheria,Scedosporium and related genera显示文摘As a result of fundamental changes in the International Code of Nomenclature on the use of separate names for sexual and asexual stages of fungi, generic names of many groups should be reconsidered.Members of the ECMM/ISHAM working group on Pseudallescheria/Scedosporium infections herein advocate a novel nomenclature for genera and species in Pseudallescheria,Scedosporium and allied taxa. The generic names Parascedosporium,Lomentospora,Petriella,Petriellopsis, and Scedosporium are proposed for a lineage within Microascaceae with mostly Scedosporium anamorphs producing slimy, annellidic conidia.Considering that Scedosporium has priority over Pseudallescheria and that Scedosporium prolificans is phylogenetically distinct from the other Scedosporium species, some name changes are proposed.Pseudallescheria minutispora and Petriellidium desertorum are renamed as Scedosporium minutisporum and S.desertorum,respectively.Scedosporium prolificans is renamed as Lomentospora prolificans. | Michaela Lackner G.Sybren de Hoog Liyue Yang Leandro Ferreira Moreno Sarah A.Ahmed Fritz Andreas Josef Kaltseis Markus Nagl Cornelia Lass-Florl Brigitte Risslegger Gunter Rambach Cornelia Speth Vincent Robert Walter Buzina Sharon Chen Jean-Philippe Bouchara Jose F.Cano-Lira Josep Guarro Josepa Gené Fabiola Fernández Silva Rosa Haido Gerhard Haase Vladimir Havlicek Dea Garcia-Hermoso Jacques F.Meis Ferry Hagen Martin Kirchmair Johannes Rainer Katharina Schwabenbauer Mirjam Zoderer Wieland Meyer Felix Gilgado Vania A.Vicente Elena Piecková Monika Regenermel Peter-Michael Rath Joerg Steinmann Xisto Wellington de Alencar Francoise Symoens Kathrin Tintelnot Krzysztof Ulfig Aristea Velegraki Anna Maria Tortorano Sandrine Giraud Sara Mina Kinga Rigler-Hohenwarter Fernando L.Hernando Andoni Ramirez-Garcia Aize Pellon Jashanpreet Kaur Eliana Barreto Bergter Jardel Vieira de Meirelles Ingrid Dutra da Silva Laurence Delhaes Ana Alastruey-Izquerdo Ruo-yu Li Qiaoyun Lu Tarek Moussa Omar Almaghrabi Hassan Al-Zahrani Gen Okada Shuwen Deng Wangqing Liao Jingsi Zeng Jouni Issakainen Livia Cristina Liporagi Lopes | 2014 | Fungal Diversity2014,,4: | 1
