| 1 | 3D printed microfluidic devices:a review focused on four fundamental manufacturing approaches and implications on the field of healthcare显示文摘In the last fewyears,3D printing has emerged as a promising alternative for the fabrication ofmicrofluidic devices,overcoming some of the limitations associated with conventional soft-lithography.Stereolithography(SLA),extrusion-based technology,and inkjet 3D printing are three of the widely used 3D printing technologies owing to their accessibility and affordability.Microfluidic devices can be 3D printed by employing a manufacturing approach from four fundamental manufacturing approaches classified as(1)direct printing approach,(2)mold-based approach,(3)modular approach,and(4)hybrid approach.To evaluate the feasibility of 3D printing technologies for fabricating microfluidic devices,a review focused on 3D printing fundamental manufacturing approaches has been presented.Using a broad spectrum of additive manufacturing materials,3D printed microfluidic devices have been implemented in various fields,including biological,chemical,and material synthesis.However,some crucial challenges are associated with the same,including low resolution,low optical transparency,cytotoxicity,high surface roughness,autofluorescence,non-compatibility with conventional sterilization methods,and low gas permeability.The recent research progress in materials related to additive manufacturing has aided in overcoming some of these challenges.Lastly,we outline possible implications of 3D printed microfluidics on the various fields of healthcare such as in vitro disease modeling and organ modeling,novel drug development,personalized treatment for cancer,and cancer drug screening by discussing the current state and future outlook of 3D printed‘organs-on-chips,’and 3D printed‘tumor-on-chips.’We conclude the review by highlighting future research directions in this field. | Viraj Mehta Subha N.Rath | 2021 | Bio-Design and Manufacturing2021,4,2: | 6 |
| 2 | Australian tertiary care outcomes of entecavir monotherapy in treatment naive patients with chronic hepatitis B显示文摘AIM:To evaluate the long-term treatment outcomes of entecavir monotherapy in treatment naive patients in an Australian tertiary care setting. METHODS:A retrospective analysis of treatment naive patients receiving entecavir monotherapy through Westmead Hospital was performed.Patients were excluded if they had received previous treatment with another nucleoside or nucleotide analogue,were pregnant or less than 18 years old. RESULTS:Out of 336 patients,163 patients fulfilled the selection criteria.Range of follow up was 3-46 mo (mean 26 mo).134 patients(82.2%)had pre-treatment biopsies,with 26 patients(16.0%)demonstrating F3-4 fibrosis.In total,153 patients(93.9%)achieved at least Partial Virological Suppression(PVS),with 134 patients (82.2%)achieving complete virological suppression. The cumulative CVS and PVS rates at 36 mo were 82.1%and 96.4%,respectively.3 patients(1.8%)failed to achieve PVS,while 5 patients(3.0%)developed virological rebound.128 patients(78.5%)maintained CVS throughout follow up.Predictors of CVS included lower baseline DNA level(P=0.001),hepatitis B virus e antigen negative status(P=0.001)and increasing age at treatment(log rank 0.001).No significant adverse effects were reported necessitating cessation of entecavir. | 3 | Combination drug regimens for metastatic clear cell renal cell carcinoma显示文摘Renal cell carcinomas(RCC)make up about 90%of kidney cancers,of which 80%are of the clear cell subtype.About 20%of patients are already metastatic at the time of diagnosis.Initial treatment is often cytoreductive nephrectomy,but systemic therapy is required for advanced RCC.Single agent targeted therapies are moderately toxic and only somewhat effective,leading to development of immunotherapies and combination therapies.This review identifies limitations of monotherapies for metastatic renal cell carcinoma,discusses recent advances in combination therapies,and highlights therapeutic options under development.The goal behind combining various modalities of systemic therapy is to potentiate a synergistic antitumor effect.However,combining targeted therapies may cause increased toxicity.The initial attempts to create therapeutic combinations based on inhibition of the vascular endothelial growth factor or mammalian target of rapamycin pathways were largely unsuccessful in achieving a profile of increased synergy without increased toxicity.To date,five combination therapies have been approved by the U.S.Food and Drug Administration,with the most recently approved therapies being a combination of checkpoint inhibition plus targeted therapy.Several other combination therapies are under development,including some in the phase 3 stage.The new wave of combination therapies for metastatic RCC has the potential to increase response rates and improve survival outcomes while maintaining tolerable side effect profiles. | Viraj V Khetani Daniella E Portal Mansi R Shah Tina Mayer Eric A Singer | 2020 | World Journal of Clinical Oncology2020,11,8: | 2 |

| 6 | Potential of biochar and organic amendments for reclamation of coastal acidic-salt affected soil显示文摘Salinity and acidity have affected several hundred million hectares of land throughout the globe which poses a major threat to global food security and biodiversity.Application of organic amendments for salt-affected soils has been identified as one of the most effective ways to mitigate salinity-induced problems and considered as a green technique offering twin benefits of waste load reduction and land reclamation.However,studies on reclaiming acidic-salt affected soils are limited.Therefore,this study aimed to determine the reclamation potential of biochars and organic amendments involving Gliricidia sepium biochar produced at 300℃,500℃,and 700℃,green waste compost,and municipal sewage sludge at three different amend-ment ratios,1.0%,2.5%and 5.0%.The incubation experiment was conducted for a 4-month period with different amendment ratios applied to the coastal acidic-salt affected soil.Subsamples were extracted from incubation pots after 1 and 4 months and analyzed for soil chemical parameters(pH,EC,NO_(3)^(−),PO_(4)^(3−,total organic carbon,cation exchange capacity,sodium adsorption ratio,exchangeable sodium percentage)and microbial enzyme activity(catalase activity,and acid-and alkaline phosphatase activity).All organic amendments demonstrated enhancement of the soil properties in a significant manner.However,increasing incubation time and amendment ratio increase the changes of soil parameters by a great percentage.Therefore,the maximum amendment ratio of 5.0%and 4 months of incubation period rendered a significant improvement in the reclamation of acidic-salt affected soil.However,the biochar produced at 500℃ contributed the maximum towards the improved physicochemical and biochemical profile of acidic-salt affected soil,making it the most promising organic amend-ment for the reclamation of acidic-salt affected soil.The overall reclamation efficiency of organic amendments registered the following order of variation:700 BC | Viraj Gunarathne Athula Senadeera Udaya Gunarathne Jayanta Kumar Biswas Yaser A.Almaroai Meththika Vithanage | 2020 | Biochar2020,2,1: | 2 |
