| 1 | Recent glacial retreat and its effect on water resources in eastern Xinjiang显示文摘The eastern Xinjiang Basin is desperately short of water. Most rivers in the basin originate in the high eastern Tianshan, which has abundant precipitation and numerous alpine glaciers. Fieldwork conducted on three reference glaciers around Mt. Bogda in 1981 and 2009 suggests that they all strongly melt in summer, a process that has tended to accelerate in recent decades. Based on topographic maps from 1962 and 1972 and 2005/2006 satellite imagery, we investigated 203 glaciers near Mt. Bogda and 75 glaciers near Mt. Harlik. The results show that the surface area of the Mt. Bogda glaciers decreased by 21.6% (0.49% a?1) from 1962 to 2006. This was accompanied by a 181 m decrease in length and a 28% drop in ice volume. In the Mt. Harlik region, areal extent was reduced by 10.5% (0.32% a?1), length by 166 m, and volume by 14% between 1972 and 2005. South-facing glaciers lost more of their area than those that are north facing, yielding an areal loss of 25.3% and 16.9% for southern and northern slopes of Mt. Bogda, respectively, and 12.3% and 6.6% for the comparable slopes of Mt. Harlik. Glaciers smaller than 0.5 km2 in area experienced the strongest retreat, whereas glaciers larger than 2 km2 in area experienced gentle recession but may be the main contributors in the future to river runoff. Glacial ablation in eastern Xinjiang tends to be strong, and the water resources in this region are deteriorating. Also, a heavy reduction in the capacity of the local karez system, as well as a significant change in river runoff, can be related to glacial retreat. | 2 | Origination and evolution of orphan genes and de novo genes in the genome of Caenorhabditis elegans显示文摘Orphan genes that lack detectable homologues in other lineages could contribute to a variety of biological functions. However,their origination and function mechanisms remain largely unknown. Herein, through a comprehensive and systematic computational pipeline, we identified 893 orphan genes in the lineage of C. elegans, of which only a low fraction(0.9%) were derived from transposon elements. Six new protein-coding genes that de novo originated from non-coding DNA sequences in the genome of C. elegans were also identified. The authenticity and functionality of these orphan genes and de novo genes are supported by three lines of evidences, consisting of transcriptional data, and in silico proteomic data, and the fixation status data in wild populations. Orphan genes and de novo genes exhibited simple gene structures, such as, short in protein length, of fewer exons,and are frequently X-linked. RNA-seq data analysis showed these orphan genes are enriched with expression in embryo development and gonad, and their potential function in early development was further supported by gene ontology enrichment analysis results. Meanwhile, de novo genes were found to be with significant expression in gonad, and functional enrichment analysis of the co-expression genes of these de novo genes suggested they may be functionally involved in signaling transduction pathway and metabolism process. | 4 | Purification,characterization and application of dual coagulants containing chitosan and different Al species in coagulation and ultrafiltration process显示文摘The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of different Al species and chitosan(CS) dosages on coagulation performance,floc characteristics(floc sizes,strength and regrowth ability and fractal dimension) and membrane resistance in a coagulation-ultrafiltration hybrid process.Results showed that different Al species combined with humic acid in diverse ways.A1_a had better removal efficiency,as determined by UV_(254) and dissolved organic carbon,which could be further improved by the addition of CS.In addition,the optimal dosage of different Al species was determined to be 4.0 mg/L with the CS concentration of 1.0 mg/L,by orthogonal coagulation experiments.Combining Al_a/A1_b/A1_c,with CS resulted in larger flocs,higher recovery,and higher fractal dimension values corresponding to denser flocs;in particular,the floc size at the steady state stage was four times larger than that obtained with Al species coagulants alone.The results of ultrafiltration experiments indicated that the external fouling percentage was significantly higher than that of internal fouling,at around 85%and 15%,respectively.In addition,the total membrane resistance was significantly decreased due to CS addition. | Wenyu Wang Shuang Zhao Qinyan Yue Baoyu Gao Wen Song Lijuan Feng | 2017 | Journal of Environmental Sciences2017,29,1: | 4 |
| 5 | Do migrant and resident species differ in the timing of increases in reproductive and thyroid hormone secretion and body mass? A case study in the comparison of pre-breeding physiological rhythms in the Eurasian Skylark and Asian Short-toed Lark显示文摘Background:Physiological preparation for reproduction in small passerines involves the increased secretion of reproductive hormones, elevation of the metabolic rate and energy storage, all of which are essential for reproduction. However, it is unclear whether the timing of the physiological processes involved is the same in resident and migrant species that breed in the same area. To answer this question, we compared temporal variation in the plasma concentration of luteinizing hormone(LH), testosterone(T), estradiol(E_2), triiothyronine(T_3) and body mass, between a migrant species, the Eurasian Skylark(Alauda arvensis) and a resident species, the Asian Short-toed Lark(Calandrella cheleensis), both of which breed in northeastern Inner Mongolia, China, during the 2014 and 2015 breeding seasons.Methods:Twenty adult Eurasian Skylarks and twenty Asian Short-toed Larks were captured on March 15, 2014 and 2015 and housed in out-door aviaries. Plasma LH, T(males), E_2(females), T_3 and the body mass of each bird were measured every six days from March 25 to May 6.Results:With the exception of T, which peaked earlier in the Asian Short-toed Lark in 2014, plasma concentrations of LH, T, E_2 and T_3 of both species peaked at almost the same time. However, Asian Short-toed Larks attained peak body mass earlier than Eurasian Skylarks. Plasma T_3 concentrations peaked 12 days earlier than plasma LH in both species. Generally, plasma LH, T, E_2, T_3 and body mass, peaked earlier in both species in 2014 than 2015.Conclusions:The timing of pre-reproductive changes in the endocrine system and energy metabolism can be the same in migrant and resident species; however, residents may accumulate energy reserves faster than migrants. Although migration does not affect the timing of pre-breeding reproductive and metabolic changes, migrant species may need more time to increase their body mass. | 6 | Characterization of dissolved organic matter and membrane fouling in coagulation-ultrafiltration process treating micro-polluted surface water显示文摘Coagulation–ultrafiltration(C–UF) is widely used for surface water treatment. With the removal of pollutants, the characteristics of organic matter change and affect the final treatment efficiency and the development of membrane fouling. In this study, we built a dynamic C–UF set-up to carry out the treatment of micro-polluted surface water, to investigate the characteristics of dissolved organic matter from different units. The influences of poly aluminum chloride and poly dimethyldiallylammonium chloride(PDMDAAC) on removal efficiency and membrane fouling were also investigated. Results showed that the dosage of PDMDAAC evidently increased the UV254 and dissolved organic carbon removal efficiencies,and thereby alleviated membrane fouling in the C–UF process. Most hydrophobic bases(HoB)and hydrophobic neutral fractions could be removed by coagulation. Similarly, UF was good at removing HoB compared to hydrophilic substances(HiS) and hydrophobic acid(HoA)fractions. HiS and HoA fractions with low molecule weight accumulated on the surface of the membrane, causing the increase of transmembrane pressure(TMP). | 7 | The luminescence properties of Sr_3Gd(BO_3)_3:Tb^(3+) phosphors under vacuum ultraviolet excitation显示文摘Tb3+-activated Sr3Gd(BO3)3 green phosphors were prepared by conventional solid-state reaction. The vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) excitation, photoluminescence (PL) and decay properties of the phosphors in the visible range were investigated. The excitation spectrum showed a strong broad band from 160 to 200 nm with a maximum at 183 nm which was adjacent to the VUV excitation light source of 172 nm. Under excitation at 172 nm, the optimum co-doping concentration of Tb3+ was 10 mol%, and the emission intensity of Sr3Gd0.9(BO3)3:0.1Tb3+ was comparable to that of commercial Zn2SiO4:Mn2+. The strongest emission peak of Sr3Gd0.9(BO3)3:0.1Tb3+ was at 543 nm with chromaticity coordinates of (0.2626, 0.4922) and a lifetime of 2.32 ms. | 9 | Evaluation of menopausal status among breast cancer patients with chemotherapy-induced amenorrhea显示文摘Objective: In patients with chemotherapy-induced amenorrhea(CIA), the menopausal status is ambiguous and difficult to evaluate. This study aimed to establish a discriminative model to predict and classify the menopausal status of breast cancer patients with CIA.Methods: This is a single center hospital-based study from 2013 to 2016. The menopausal age distribution and accumulated incidence rate of CIA are described. Multivariate models were adjusted for established and potential confounding factors including age, serum concentration of estradiol(E2) and follicle-stimulating hormone(FSH),feeding, pregnancy, parity, abortions, and body mass index(BMI). The odds ratio(OR) and 95% confidence interval(95% CI) of different risk factors were estimated.Results: A total of 1,796 breast cancer patients were included in this study, among whom, 1,175(65.42%) were premenopausal patients and 621(34.58%) were post-menopause patients. Five hundred and fifty patients were included in CIA analysis, and a cumulative CIA rate of 81.64% was found in them. Age(OR: 1.856, 95% CI:1.732-1.990), serum concentration of E2(OR: 0.976, 95% CI: 0.972-0.980) and FSH(OR: 1.060, 95% CI:1.053-1.066), and menarche age(OR: 1.074, 95% CI: 1.009-1.144) were found to be associated with the patients' menopausal status. According to multivariate analysis, the discriminative model to predict the menopausal status is Logit(P)=-28.396+0.536 Age-0.014 E2+0.031 FSH. The sensitivities for this model were higher than 85%, and its specificities were higher than 89%.Conclusions: The discriminative model obtained from this study for predicting menstrual state is important for premenopausal patients with CIA. | 16 | 全脑放疗同步或序贯替尼泊甙、顺铂治疗小细胞肺癌脑转移(英文)显示文摘Objective: The aim of the study was to compare efficacies and safeties of 2 different treatments of whole brain radiotherapy (WBRT) sequential or concomitant Vm26/DDP for small cell lung cancer (SCLC) patients with brain metastases. Methods: A total of 39 patients were randomly divided into sequential chemoradiotherapy regime (A group, 20 patients) and concomitant chemoradiotherapy regime (B group, 19 patients). The dose of WBRT was 36 Gy in 18–20 fractions, chemotherapy of Vm26/DDP regimen with teniposide 60 mg/m2 on d1 to d3 and cisplatin 20 mg/m2 on d1 to d5, repeating every 3 weeks. The response was evaluated after WBRT and 2 cycles of chemotherapy. Results: Total response rates of A and B groups were 70.0% and 78.9% respectively (P = 0.520). The median survival was 11 months in A group and 10 months in B group. Six, twelve and eighteen months cumulative survival rates of A and B groups were 75.0%, 42.5%, 26.2%, and 81.6%, 26.4%, 10.5%, respectively (χ2 = 0.383, P > 0.05). Response rate and the number of brain metastases were independent prognostic factors. Conclusion: Both sequential and concomitant chemoradiotherapy groups are effective, and the main toxicity with myelosuppression is tolerable after therapy. | 17 | Risk factors of recurrence in small-sized, node negative breast cancer in young women: a retrospective study in Chinese population显示文摘We aimed to investigate risk factors of local and distant recurrence in small-sized, node negative breast cancer in women <35 years in a Chinese cohort. Between January 1994 and January 2007, 107 patients with pathologically confirmed small-sized (1cm), node negative breast cancer who did not receive neoadjuvant or adjuvant chemotherapy were included. The 5-year recurrence-free survival (RFS) was estimated according to different prognostic variables. With a median time of 60 months (range, 8-60 months) follow-up, local and distant recurrence were observed in 25 cases (23.4%). By univariate analysis, HER-2 positivity, triple negative (TN), and high Ki-67 index ( 14%) were risk factors of a lower RFS (hazard ratio (HR) 6.680, 95% confidence interval (CI) 2.350-18.985, P<0.0001 for HER-2 positive; HR 4.769, 95%CI 1.559-14.591, P=0.006 for TN; HR6.030, 95%CI2.659-13.674, P<0.0001 for high Ki-67index). Patients with grade 3 tumors had a lower RFS (HR 2.922, 95%CI 1.096-7.791, P=0.032) compared with those with grade 1 or grade 2 tumors. By multivariate analysis, HER-2 positivity (HR 10.204, 95%CI 3.391-30.704, P<0.0001), TN (HR 10.521, 95% CI 3.152-35.113, P<0.0001) and high Ki-67 index (HR 10.820, 95%CI 4.338-27.002, P<0.0001) remained risk factors of RFS. In this cohort, HER-2 positivity, triple negative and high Ki-67 index were independent risk factors of RFS in young patients with T1a,bN0 breast cancer. [Methods]The in vitro transdermal permeation of ginsenoside Rbl Babu agent was performed by using intelligent transdermal apparatus,and the percutaneous fluid was collected and analyzed by using high performance liquid chromatography( HPLC). The Babu agent was stuck on the skin of acupoint area,determined by Laser Doppler Flowmeter,and amplitude of microvascular vasomotion of acupoint area was recorded. [Results] With the extension of transdermal time,the cumulative permeation rate of ginsenoside Rbl increased. The amplitude of microvascular vasomotion could be significantly increased with the application of ginsenoside Rbl Babu agent( P < 0. 01). [Conclusions]The drug delivery system of ginsenoside Rbl Babu agent can release the drug into the acupoint,increase the amplitude of microvascular vasomotion,and achieve the effect of acupuncture.
