Anaerobic microbiologically influenced corrosion mechanisms interpreted using bioenergetics and bioelectrochemistry: A review显示文摘Microbiologically influenced corrosion(MIC) is a major cause of corrosion damages, facility failures, and financial losses, making MIC an important research topic. Due to complex microbiological activities and a lack of deep understanding of the interactions between biofilms and metal surfaces, MIC occurrences and mechanisms are difficult to predict and interpret. Many theories and mechanisms have been proposed to explain MIC. In this review, the mechanisms of MIC are discussed using bioenergetics, microbial respiration types, and biofilm extracellular electron transfer(EET). Two main MIC types, namely EET-MIC and metabolite MIC(M-MIC), are discussed. This brief review provides a state of the art insight into MIC mechanisms and it helps the diagnosis and prediction of occurrences of MIC under anaerobic conditions in the oil and gas industry. | Yingchao Li Dake Xu Changfeng Chen Xiaogang Li Ru Jia Dawei Zhang Wolfgang Sand Fuhui Wang Tingyue Cu | 2018 | Journal of Materials Science & Technology2018,34,10: | 43
Target observations for improving initialization of high-impact ocean-atmospheric environmental events forecasting显示文摘In this paper, we emphasize the importance of accurate initial conditions in predicting high-impact ocean-atmospheric environmental events, such as El Nin?o-Southern Oscillation(ENSO), Indian Ocean Dipole(IOD), tropical cyclone(TC), and Kuroshio large meander(KLM), by reviewing recent progresses toward target observations for improving the initialization of these events forecasting. Since ield observations are costly and will never be dense enough to fully cover the vast space of these events, it is necessary to develop methodologies that guide the design of eicient and efective observation strategy. Of particular interest is a method called conditional non-linear optimal perturbation(CNOP), which has been shown to be very useful in determining the sensitive areas for target observations applicable to the predictions of ENSO, IOD, TC, and KLM. Further studies are needed to understand the predictability of these events under the inluence of climate change, and to explore the possibility of implementing ield programs of target observations. hese studies are challenging but are crucially important for improving our forecast skill of the high-impact ocean-atmospheric environmental events, and thus for disaster prevention, climate change mitigation, and sustainable socio-economic development. | Mu Mu Wansuo Duan Dake Chen Weidong Yu | 2015 | National Science Review2015,2,2: | 21
Genesis of the 2014–2016 El Nio events显示文摘The 2015/2016 El Nio was one of the strongest El Nio events in history, and this strong event was preceded by a weak El Nio in 2014. This study systematically analyzed the dynamical processes responsible for the genesis of these events. It was found that the weak 2014 El Nio had two warming phases, the spring-summer warming was produced by zonal advection and downwelling Kelvin waves driven by westerly wind bursts(WWBs), and the autumn-winter warming was produced by meridional advection, surface heating as well as downwelling Kelvin waves. The 2015/2016 extreme El Nio, on the other hand, was primarily a result of sustained zonal advection and downwelling Kelvin waves driven by a series of WWBs, with enhancement from the Bjerknes positive feedback. The vast difference between these two El Nio events mainly came from the different amount of WWBs in 2014 and 2015. As compared to the 1982/1983 and 1997/1998 extreme El Nio events, the 2015/2016 El Nio exhibited some distinctive characteristics in its genesis and spatial pattern. We need to include the effects of WWBs to the theoretical framework of El Nio to explain these characteristics, and to improve our understanding and prediction of El Nio. | LIAN Tao CHEN DaKe TANG YouMin | 2017 | Science China Earth Sciences2017,60,9: | 9
Progress in ENSO prediction and predictability study显示文摘ENSO is the strongest interannual signal in the global climate system with worldwide climatic, ecological and societal impacts. Over the past decades, the research about ENSO prediction and predictability has attracted broad attention. With the development of coupled models, the improvement in initialization schemes and the progress in theoretical studies, ENSO has become the most predictable climate mode at the time scales from months to seasons. This paper reviews in detail the progress in ENSO predictions and predictability studies achieved in recent years. An emphasis is placed on two fundamental issues: the improvement in practical prediction skills and progress in the theoretical study of the intrinsic predictability limit. The former includes progress in the couple models, data assimilations, ensemble predictions and so on, and the latter focuses on efforts in the study of the optimal error growth and in the estimate of the intrinsic predictability limit. | Youmin Tang Rong-Hua Zhang Ting Liu Wansuo Duan Dejian Yang Fei Zheng Hongli Ren Tao Lian Chuan Gao Dake Chen Mu Mu | 2018 | National Science Review2018,5,6: | 8
Advances in research of the mid-deep South China Sea circulation显示文摘The South China Sea(SCS)is a large marginal sea connecting the Indian and Pacific oceans.Under the factors of monsoons, strait transport, and varied bathymetry, the SCS presents a three-layer structure and strong diapycnal mixing which is far greater than that in the open ocean.Theoretical analysis and observations reveal that internal tides, internal solitary waves, and strong winds are the sources of the strong mixing in the northern SCS.A major consequence of the strong mixing is an active mid-deep circulation system. This system promotes exchange of water between the SCS and adjacent oceans, and also regulates the upper layer of wind-driven circulation, making the 3 dimensional SCS circulation clearly different from that in other tropical and subtropical marginal seas. The mass transport capacity of the mid-deep circulation has a substantial impact on marine sedimentation, the biogeochemical cycle, and other processes in the SCS.This paper summarizes the recent advances in middeep sea circulation dynamics of the SCS,and discusses the opportunities and challenges in this area. | Dongxiao WANG Qiang WANG Shuqun CAI Xiaodong SHANG Shiqiu PENG Yeqiang SHU Jingen XIAO Xiaohui XIE Zhiwei ZHANG Zhiqiang LIU Jian LAN Dake CHEN Huijie XUE Guihua WANG Jianping GAN Xinong XIE Rui ZHANG Hui CHEN Qingxuan YANG | 2019 | Science China Earth Sciences2019,62,12: | 8
A theoretical investigation of the tropical Indo-Pacific tripole mode显示文摘The El Ni o-Southern Oscillation(ENSO)phenomenon in the tropical Pacific has been a focus of ocean and climate studies in the last few decades.Recently, the short-term climate variability in the tropical Indian Ocean has attracted increasingly more attention, especially with the proposition of the Indian Ocean Dipole(IOD)mode. However, these phenomena are often studied separately without much consideration of their interaction.Observations reveal a striking out-of-phase relationship between zonal gradients of sea surface height anomaly(SSHA)and sea surface temperature anomaly(SSTA)in the tropical Indian and Pacific Oceans.Since the two oceans share the ascending branch of the Walker cells over the warm pool, the variation within one of them will affect the other. The accompanied zonal surface wind anomalies are always opposite over the two basins, thus producing a tripole structure with opposite zonal gradients of SSHA/SSTA in the two oceans. This mode of variability has been referred to as Indo-Pacific Tripole(IPT).Based on observational data analyses and a simple ocean-atmosphere coupled model, this study tries to identify the characteristics and physical mechanism of IPT with a particular emphasis on the relationships among ENSO,IOD,and IPT.The model includes the basic oceanic and atmospheric variables and the feedbacks between them, and takes into account the inter-basin connection through an atmospheric bridge, thus providing a valuable framework for further research on the short-term tropical climate variability. | LIAN Tao CHEN DaKe TANG YouMin JIN BaoGang | 2014 | Science China Earth Sciences2014,57,1: | 7
Variation of the Kuroshio intrusion pathways northeast of Taiwan using the Lagrangian method显示文摘The seasonal variations of the Kuroshio intrusion pathways northeast of Taiwan were investigated using observational data from satellite-tracked sea surface drifters and a numerical particle-tracking experiment based on a high-resolution numerical ocean model. The results of sea surface drifter data observed from 1989 to 2013 indicate that the Kuroshio surface intrusion follows two distinct pathways: one is a northwestward intrusion along the northern coast of Taiwan Island, and the other is a direct intrusion near the turn of the shelf break. The former occurs primarily in the winter, while the latter exists year round. A particle-tracking experiment in the high-resolution numerical model reproduces the two observed intrusion paths by the sea surface drifters. The three-dimensional structure of the Kuroshio intrusion is revealed by the model results. The pathways, features and possible dynamic mechanisms of the subsurface intrusion are also discussed. | LIU XiaoHui CHEN DaKe DONG ChangMing HE HaiLun | 2016 | Science China Earth Sciences2016,59,2: | 7
Upper ocean response to tropical cyclone wind forcing: A case study of typhoon Rammasun(2008)显示文摘The characteristics of the upper ocean response to tropical cyclone wind(TCW) forcing in the northwestern Pacific were investigated using satellite and Argo data, as well as an ocean general circulation model. In particular, a case study was carried out on typhoon Rammasun, which passed through our study area during May 6–13, 2008. It is found that the local response right under the TCW forcing is characterized by a quick deepening of the surface mixed layer, a strong latent heat loss to the atmosphere, and an intense upwelling near the center of typhoon, leading to a cooling of the oceanic surface layer that persists as a cold wake along the typhoon track. More interestingly, the upper ocean response exhibits a four-layer thermal structure, including a cooling layer near the surface and a warming layer right below, accompanied by another pair of cooling/warming layers in the thermocline. The formation of the surface cooling/warming layers can be readily explained by the strong vertical mixing induced by TCW forcing, while the thermal response in the thermocline is probably a result of the cyclone-driven upwelling and the associated advective processes. | PEI YuHua ZHANG RongHua CHEN DaKe | 2015 | Science China Earth Sciences2015,58,9: | 6
Effects of surface waves and sea spray on air–sea fluxes during the passage of Typhoon Hagupit显示文摘Air–sea exchange plays a vital role in the development and maintenance of tropical cyclones(TCs). Although studies have suggested the dependence of air–sea fluxes on surface waves and sea spray, how these processes modify those fluxes under TC conditions have not been sufficiently investigated based on in-situ observations.Using continuous meteorological and surface wave data from a moored buoy in the northern South China Sea,this study examines the effects of surface waves and sea spray on air–sea fluxes during the passage of Typhoon Hagupit. The mooring was within about 40 km of the center of Hagupit. Surface waves could increase momentum flux to the ocean by about 15%, and sea spray enhanced both sensible and latent heat fluxes to the atmosphere, causing Hagupit to absorb 500 W/m^2 more heat flux from the ocean. These results have powerful implications for understanding TC–ocean interaction and improving TC intensity forecasting. | HE Hailun WU Qiaoyan CHEN Dake SUN Jia LIANG Chujin JIN Weifang XU Yao | 2018 | Acta Oceanologica Sinica2018,37,5: | 5
UPPER OCEAN RESPONSE TO SURFACE MOMENTUM AND FRESHWATER FLUXES IN THE WESTERN PACIFIC WARM POOL显示文摘A series of numerical experiments are carried out to study the tropical upper ocean response to combined momentum and buoyancy forcing, with emphasis on the three-dimensional thermohaline structure in the western Pacific warm pool. In response to climatological winds, heat fluxes and freshwater input, the model is able to simulate the salient dynamic and hydrographic features of the tropical Pacific Ocean and their seasonal variability. In response to idealized episodic westerly wind bursts and rainfall, the simulated upper ocean conditions compare favorably with available observations, thus enabling us to identify important physical processes involved. Local forcing, vertical mixing and meridional advection dominate the salt and heat budgets in the warm pool on short time scales, but it is necessary to include the saline water coming from the east with the South Equatorial Current to close the salt budget on seasonal and longer time scales. Strong westerly wind bursts generate a swift eastward equatorial jet and a pair of meridional circulation cells with convergence at the equator. This results in an equatorward advection of relatively fresh water from the north and a depression of the thermocline at the equator. Heavy rainfall reduces the surface mixed layer depth by creating a shallow halocline, thus trapping the momentum and heat inputs near the surface. The remote influences of the episodic momentum and buoyancy fluxes are very different. Westerly wind bursts can generate large downstream disturbances in both dynamic and thermal fields through the propagation of equatorial waves, while the effect of rainfall is mostly confined to the forcing area. | Dake Chen | 2004 | 热带海洋学报2004,23,6: | 4

The functions and applications of A7R in anti-angiogenic therapy, imaging and drug delivery systems显示文摘Vascular endothelial growth factor receptor 2(VEGFR-2)and neuropilin-1(NRP-1)are two prominent antiangiogenic targets. They are highly expressed on vascular endothelial cells and some tumor cells. Therefore, targeting VEGFR-2 and NRP-1 may be a potential antiangiogenic and antitumor strategy.A7R,a peptide with sequence of Ala-Thr-Trp-Leu-Pro-Pro-Arg that was found by phage display of peptide libraries, can preferentially target VEGFR-2 and NRP-1 and destroy the binding between vascular endothelial growth factor 165(VEGF165)and VEGFR-2 or NRP-1.This peptide is a new potent inhibitor of tumor angiogenesis and a targeting ligand for cancer therapy. This review describes the discovery, function and mechanism of the action of A7R,and further introduces the applications of A7R in antitumor angiogenic treatments, tumor angiogenesis imaging and targeted drug delivery systems. In this review, strategies to deliver different drugs by A7R-modified liposomes and nanoparticles are highlighted.A7R,a new dual targeting ligand of VEGFR-2 and NRP-1,is expected to have efficient therapeutic or targeting roles in tumor drug delivery. | Lu Lu Hongyuan Chen Dake Hao Xinke Zhang Fengshan Wang | 2019 | Asian Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences2019,14,6: | 3
Review on observational studies of western tropical Pacific Ocean circulation and climate显示文摘The Western Tropical Pacific(WTP) Ocean holds the largest area of warm water(>28℃) in the world ocean referred to as the Western Pacific Warm Pool(WPWP),which modulates the regional and global climate through strong atmospheric convection and its variability. The WTP is unique in terms of its complex 3-D ocean circulation system and intensive multiscale variability, making it crucial in the water and energy cycle of the global ocean.Great advances have been made in understanding the complexity of the WTP ocean circulation and associated climate impact by the international scientific community since the 1960 s through field experiments. In this study,we review the evolving insight to the 3-D structure and multi-scale variability of the ocean circulation in the WTP and their climatic impacts based on in-situ ocean observations in the past decades, with emphasis on the achievements since 2000.The challenges and open que stions remaining are reviewed as well as future plan for international study of the WTP ocean circulation and climate. | HU Dunxin WANG Fan SPRINTALL Janet WU Lixin RISER Stephen CRAVATTE Sophie GORDON Arnold ZHANG Linlin CHEN Dake ZHOU Hui ANDO Kentaro WANG Jianing LEE Jae-Hak HU Shijian WANG Jing ZHANG Dongxiao FENG Junqiao LIU Lingling VILLANOY Cesar KALUWIN Chalapan QU Tangdong MA Yixin | 2020 | Journal of Oceanology and Limnology2020,38,4: | 3
Bioactive extracellular matrix scaffolds engineered with proangiogenic proteoglycan mimetics and loaded with endothelial progenitor cells promote neovascularization and diabetic wound healing显示文摘Diabetic ischemic wound treatment remains a critical clinical challenge.Neovascularization plays a significant role in wound healing during all stages of the tissue repair process.Strategies that enhance angiogenesis and neovascularization and improve ischemic pathology may promote the healing of poor wounds, particularly diabetic wounds in highly ischemic conditions. We previously identified a cyclic peptide LXW7 that specifically binds to integrinαvβ3 on endothelial progenitor cells(EPCs)and endothelial cells(ECs),activates vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF)receptors, and promotes EC growth and maturation. In this study,we designed and synthesized a multi-functional pro-angiogenic molecule by grafting LXW7 and collagen-binding peptides(SILY)to a dermatan sulfate(DS)glycosaminoglycan backbone, named LXW7-DS-SILY,and further employed this multi-functional molecule to functionalize collagen-based extracellular matrix(ECM)scaffolds. We confirmed that LXW7-DS-SILY modification significantly promoted EPC attachment and growth on the ECM scaffolds in vitro and supported EPC survival in vivo in the ischemic environment. When applied in an established Zucker Diabetic Fatty(ZDF)rat ischemic skin flap model,LXW7-DS-SILY-functionalized ECM scaffolds loaded with EPCs significantly improved wound healing, enhanced neovascularization and modulated collagen fibrillogenesis in the ischemic environment.Altogether, this study provides a promising novel treatment to accelerate diabetic ischemic wound healing, thereby reducing limb amputation and mortality of diabetic patients. | Siqi He Tanaya Walimbe Hongyuan Chen Kewa Gao Priyadarsini Kumar Yifan Wei Dake Hao Ruiwu Liu Diana L.Farmer Kit S.Lam Jianda Zhou Alyssa Panitch Aijun Wang | 2022 | Bioactive Materials2022,7,4: | 2
Nonlinear Measurement Function in the Ensemble Kalman Filter显示文摘The optimal Kalman gain was analyzed in a rigorous statistical framework. Emphasis was placed on a comprehensive understanding and interpretation of the current algorithm, especially when the measurement function is nonlinear. It is argued that when the measurement function is nonlinear, the current ensemble Kalman Filter algorithm seems to contain implicit assumptions: the forecast of the measurement function is unbiased or the nonlinear measurement function is linearized. While the forecast of the model state is assumed to be unbiased, the two assumptions are actually equivalent. On the above basis, we present two modified Kalman gain algorithms. Compared to the current Kalman gain algorithm, the modified ones remove the above assumptions, thereby leading to smaller estimated errors. This outcome was confirmed experimentally, in which we used the simple Lorenz 3-component model as the test-bed. It was found that in such a simple nonlinear dynamical system, the modified Kalman gain can perform better than the current one. However, the application of the modified schemes to realistic models involving nonlinear measurement functions needs to be further investigated. | Youmin TANG Jaison AMBANDAN Dake CHEN | 2014 | Advances in Atmospheric Sciences2014,31,3: | 2
Spatiotemporal modes of global sea surface temperature variability显示文摘This study identifies the salient global modes of sea surface temperature variability based on 145 years of HadlSST data.Unlike the traditional mode identification by EOF analysis,a combination of wavelet and EOF analysis is used to extract the leading modes at distinct time scales. The spatial patterns of some well-known regional modes are recovered, with the global connection and frequency content of these modes being revealed. Our analysis indicates that,in terms of global influence, the Pacific Ocean is the major player, and the tropical Pacific is the center of action on various time scales. The Atlantic Ocean has its own outstanding modes, but their global impacts are not as strong as those from the Pacific. The Indian Ocean generally shows a passive response to the Pacific, with a basin-wide pattern in the tropics.Despite some preliminary theoretical attempts, how to elucidate the dynamics underlying the global modes of sea surface temperature variability is still an open question. | ZHANG XiangMing CHEN Chen LIAN Tao CHEN DaKe | 2017 | Science China Earth Sciences2017,60,3: | 2
An intermediate coupled model for the tropical ocean-atmosphere system显示文摘An intermediate ocean-atmosphere coupled model is developed to simulate and predict the tropical interannual variability. Originating from the basic physical framework of the Zebiak-Cane(ZC) model, this tropical intermediate couple model(TICM) extends to the entire global tropics, with a surface heat flux parameterization and a surface wind bias correction added to improve model performance and inter-basin connections. The model well reproduces the variabilities in the tropical Pacific and Indian basins. The simulated El Ni?o-Southern Oscillation(ENSO) shows a period of 3–4 years and an amplitude of about 2°C, similar to those observed. The variabilities in the Indian Ocean, including the Indian Ocean basin mode(IOBM) and the Indian Ocean Dipole(IOD), are also reasonably captured with a realistic relationship to the Pacific. However, the tropical Atlantic variability in the TICM has a westward bias and is overly influenced by the tropical Pacific. A 47-year hindcast experiment using the TICM for the period of 1970–2016 indicates that ENSO is the most predictable mode in the tropics. Skillful predictions of ENSO can be made one year ahead, similar to the skill of the latest version of the ZC model, while a 'spring predictability barrier' still exists as in other models. In the tropical Indian Ocean, the predictability seems much higher in the west than in the east. The correlation skill of IOD prediction reaches 0.5 at a 5-month lead, which is comparable to that of the state-of-the-art coupled general circulation models. The prediction of IOD shows a significant 'winter-spring predictability barrier', implying combined influences from the tropical Pacific and the local sea-air interaction in the eastern Indian Ocean. The TICM has little predictive skill in the equatorial Atlantic for lead times longer than 3 months, which is a common problem of current climate models badly in need of further investigation. | Xunshu SONG Dake CHEN Youmin TANG Ting LIU | 2018 | Science China Earth Sciences2018,61,12: | 1
Multilevel Power Modeling of Base Station and Its ICs显示文摘A new power estimation method is proposed for base station(BS) in this paper.Based on this method,a software platform for power estimation is developed. The proposed method models power consumption on different abstraction levels by splitting a typical base station into several basic components at different levels in the view of embedded system design. In particular, our focus is on baseband IC(Integrate Circuit) due to it's the dominant power consumer in small cells.Baseband power model is based on arithmetic computing costs of selected algorithms. All computing and storage costs are calibrated using algorithm complexity, hardware architecture, activity ratio, silicon technology, and overheads on all hierarchies.Micro architecture and IC technology are considered. The model enables power comparison of different types of base stations configured with different baseband algorithms, micro architectures, and ICs.The model also supports cellular operators in power estimation of different deployment strategies and transmission schemes. The model is verified by comparing power consumption with a real LTE base station.By exposing more configuration freedoms, the platform can be used for power estimation of current and future base stations. | WANG Wei LI Xiaoyang LIU Dake CAI Zhaoyun GONG Chen | 2015 | China Communications2015,12,5: | 1
