| 1 | Analysis of the severe group dust storms in eastern part of Northwest China显示文摘Based on the available original dust storm records from 60 meteorological stations, we discussed the identification standard of severe dust storms at a single station and constructed a quite complete time series of severe group dust storms in the eastern part of Northwest China in 1954-2001.The result shows that there were 99 severe group dust storms in this region in recent 48 years. The spatial distribution indicates that the Alax Plateau, most parts of the Ordos Plateau and most parts of the Hexi Corridor are the main areas influenced by severe group dust storms. In addition, the seasonand the month with the most frequent severe group dust storms are spring and April, accounting for 78.8% and 41.4% of the total events respectively. During the past 48 years the lowest rate of severe group dust storms occurred in the 1990s. Compared with the other 4 decades, on the average, the duration and the affected area of severe group dust storms are relatively short and small during the 1990s. In 2000 and 2001, there were separately 4 severe group dust storms as the higher value after 1983 in the eastern part of Northwest China. | ZHOU Zijiang, WANG Xiwen(1. | 2 | Bird diversity and waterbird habitat preferences in relation to wetland restoration at Dianchi Lake, south-west China显示文摘Background:Restoration projects have been implemented worldwide to mitigate the adverse effects of the loss and degradation of wetland habitats.Much research has been carried out on the impacts on birds of wetland restoration and management projects in China. Studies have mainly investigated central or coastal wetlands,while inland wetlands in remote areas have been much less studied. We focused on examining the response of wild birds to wetland restoration in Dianchi Lake,south-west China. Methods: The line transect method was performed at 26 sampling plots.Three of these were in the city,and to acquire all wild bird data 23 plots were located every 2-8 km along the shore of Dianchi Lake, between December 2011 and November 2013.We collected all related bird records by searching the available literature, articles, newspapers and records of birdwatchers to compare species variation before and after implementation of wetland restoration.To measure the relationships between waterbird assemblages and habitat structures, we used canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) to pair the main matrix of bird assemblages with a second matrix of habitat variables. Results: We recorded 182 bird species belonging to 51 families and 17 orders. Of the species, 42 were new records for Kunming City and 20 were new records for Yunnan Province. Ten waterbird species were found to have disappeared from the shore of Dianchi Lake.CCA results indicated that waterbirds could be divided into four categories based on their habitat preference:synanthropic (wintering gulls), special habitat (shorebirds),semi-natural (wintering coots and ducks) and disturbance-tolerant (resident) species.Conclusions:Our study is the first to consider the entire wild bird community throughout the year and discuss the species variation before and after wetland restoration projects launched for Dianchi Lake.Distinct habitat requirements of different waterbird groups were detected in our study,suggesting different types of restoration and management should be implemented. | Kang Luo Zhaolu Wu Haotian Bai Zijiang Wang | 2019 | Avian Research2019,10,3: | 9 |
| 3 | Integration, Quality Assurance, and Usage of Global Aircraft Observations in CRA显示文摘This paper presents a detailed description of integration, quality assurance procedure, and usage of global aircraft observations for China's first generation global atmospheric reanalysis(CRA) product(1979–2018). An integration method named 'classified integration' is developed. Aircraft observations from nine different sources are integrated into the Integrated Global Meteorological Observation Archive from Aircraft(IGMOAA), a new dataset from the National Meteorological Information Center(NMIC) of the China Meteorological Administration(CMA). IGMOAA consists of global aircraft temperature, wind, and humidity data from the surface to 100 h Pa, extending from 1973 to the present. Compared with observations assimilated in the Climate Forecast System Reanalysis(CFSR) of NCEP,the observation number of IGMOAA increased by 12.9% between 2010 and 2014, mainly as a result of adding more Chinese Aircraft Meteorological Data Relay(AMDAR) data. Complex quality control procedures for aircraft observations of NCEP are applied to detect data errors. Observations are compared with ERA-Interim reanalysis from 1979 to 2018 to investigate data quality of different types and aircraft, and subsequently to develop the blacklists for CRA. IGMOAA data have been assimilated in CRA in 2018 and are real-time updated at the CMA Data-as-a-Service(CMADaa S) platform. For CRA, the fits to observations improve over time. From 1994 to 2018, root-meansquare error(RMSE) of observations relative to CRA background decreases from 1.8 to 1.0℃ for temperature above 300 h Pa, and from 4.5 to 3 m s^(-1) for zonal wind. | 4 | Optimization based accurate scheduling for generation and reserve of power system显示文摘With the improvement of electricity markets,the gradual aggravation of energy shortage and the environment pollution,it is urgent to formulate a new model to precisely satisfy the system demand for energy and reserve.Currently,power system opti-mization dispatching is always formulated as a discrete-time scheduling model.In this paper,we first demonstrate through an example that the upper and lower bounds of spinning reserve offered by a unit,given in the discrete-time model framework as constraints,is unreachable.This causes the problem that the reserve delivery obtained by the discrete-time scheduling model cannot be carried out precisely.From the detailed analysis of the ramp rate constraints,it is proved that the reachable upper and lower bounds of spinning reserve in every period can be expressed as functions of two variables,i.e.,generation level of unit at the start and end of this period.Thus,a new method is provided to calculate the upper and lower bounds of spinning reserve which are reachable in average.Furthermore,a new model based on this proposed method for joint scheduling of generation and reserve is presented,which considers the ability to realize the scheduled energy and reserve delivery.It converts the opti-mization based accurate scheduling for generation and reserve of power system from a continuous-time optimal control prob-lem to a nonlinear programming problem.Therefore,the proposed model can avoid the difficulties in solving a continu-ous-time optimal control problem.Based on the sequential quadratic programming method,numerical experiments for sched-uling electric power production systems are performed to evaluate the model and the results show that the new model is highly effective. | GAO YunLong PAN JinYan YANG ZiJiang GAO Feng JI GuoLi | 2012 | Science China(Technological Sciences)2012,55,1: | 6 |
| 5 | CRA-40/Atmosphere—The First-Generation Chinese Atmospheric Reanalysis(1979–2018):System Description and Performance Evaluation显示文摘Atmospheric reanalysis reproduces the past atmospheric conditions through assimilation of historical meteorological observations with fixed version of a numerical weather prediction(NWP)model and data assimilation(DA)system.It is widely used in weather,climate,and even business-related research and applications.This paper reports the development of CMA’s first-generation global atmospheric reanalysis(RA)covering 1979–2018(CRA-40;CRA refers to CMA-RA).CRA-40 is produced by using the Global Spectral Model(GSM)/Gridpoint Statistical Interpolation(GSI)at a 6-h time interval and a TL574 spectral(34-km)resolution with the model top at 0.27 hPa.A large number of reprocessed satellite data and widely collected conventional observations were assimilated during the reanalyzing process,including the reprocessed atmospheric motion vector(AMV)products from FY-2C/D/E/G satellites,dense conventional observations(at about 120 radiosonde and 2400 synoptic stations)over China,as well as MWHS-2 and GNSS-RO observations from FY-3C.The reanalysis fitting to observations is improved over time,especially for surface pressure with root-mean-square error reduced from 1.05 hPa in 1979 to 0.8 hPa,and for upper air temperature from 1.65 K in 1979 to 1.35 K,in 2018.The patterns of global analysis increments for temperature,specific humidity,and zonal wind are consistent with the changes in the observing system.Near surface temperature from the model’s 6-h forecast reflects the global warming trend reasonably.The CRA-40 precipitation pattern matches well with those of GPCP and other reanalyses.CRA-40 also successfully captures the QBO and its vertical and temporal development,hemispherical atmospheric circulation change,and moisture transport by the East Asian summer monsoon.CRA is now operationally running in near real time as a climate data assimilation system in CMA. | Zhiquan LIU Lipeng JIANG Chunxiang SHI Tao ZHANG Zijiang ZHOU Jie LIAO Shuang YAO Jingwei LIU Minyan WANG Huiying WANG Xiao LIANG Zhisen ZHANG Yan YAO Ting ZHU Zhe CHEN Wenhui XU Lijuan CAO Hui JIANG Kaixi HU | 2023 | Journal of Meteorological Research2023,37,1: | 4 |

A decreasing trend was found in horizontal extinction coefficient during the past 23 years, with higher values observed in 1980s relative to 1990s, and the highest and lowest values in winter and summer, respectively. | 17 | Understanding the role of SST anomaly in extreme rainfall of 2020 Meiyu season from an interdecadal perspective显示文摘Extreme Meiyu rainfall in 2020,starting from early June to the end of July,has occurred over the Yangtze River valley(YRV),with record-breaking accumulated precipitation amount since 1961.The present study aims to examine the possible effect of sea surface temperature(SST)on the YRV rainfall in Meiyu season from the interdecadal perspective.The results indicate that YRV rainfall in June exhibits more significant variability on interdecadal time scale than that in July.The interdecadal-filtered atmospheric circulation in June,compared with the counterpart in July,shows a more predominant and better-organized Western North Pacific Anticyclone(WNPAC)anomaly,which could transport abundant moisture to the YRV by anomalous southwesterly prevailing in northwestern flank of anomalous WNPAC.Both observation and numerical experiment indicate that the interdecadal change of the SST anomaly in tropical western Indian Ocean(TWI)from preceding May to June can significantly affect the anomalous WNPAC,leading to enhanced YRV rainfall in June.The TWI SST anomaly shifts from a cold phase to a warm phase around the early 2000s,with a magnitude of 0.7°C in 2020,which implies that such interdecadal warming might partly contribute to the heavy rainfall in June 2020 by providing a large-scale favorable background flow. | Yuanyuan GUO Ruijie ZHANG Zhiping WEN Juncong LI Chao Zhang Zijiang ZHOU | 2021 | Science China Earth Sciences2021,64,10: | 1 |
