| 1 | Terrestrial vegetation carbon sinks in China,1981―2000显示文摘Using China's ground observations, e.g., forest inventory, grassland resource, agricultural statistics, climate, and satellite data, we estimate terrestrial vegetation carbon sinks for China's major biomes between 1981 and 2000. The main results are in the following: (1) Forest area and forest biomass car- bon (C) stock increased from 116.5×106 ha and 4.3 Pg C (1 Pg C = 1015 g C) in the early 1980s to 142.8×106 ha and 5.9 Pg C in the early 2000s, respectively. Forest biomass carbon density increased form 36.9 Mg C/ha (1 Mg C = 106 g C) to 41.0 Mg C/ha, with an annual carbon sequestration rate of 0.075 Pg C/a. Grassland, shrub, and crop biomass sequestrate carbon at annual rates of 0.007 Pg C/a, 0.014― 0.024 Pg C/a, and 0.0125―0.0143 Pg C/a, respectively. (2) The total terrestrial vegetation C sink in China is in a range of 0.096―0.106 Pg C/a between 1981 and 2000, accounting for 14.6%―16.1% of carbon dioxide (CO2) emitted by China's industry in the same period. In addition, soil carbon sink is estimated at 0.04―0.07 Pg C/a. Accordingly, carbon sequestration by China's terrestrial ecosystems (vegetation and soil) offsets 20.8%―26.8% of its industrial CO2 emission for the study period. | 3 | Spatio-temporal changes in biomass carbon sinks in China's forests from 1977 to 2008显示文摘Forests play a leading role in regional and global carbon (C) cycles. Detailed assessment of the temporal and spatial changes in C sinks/sources of China's forests is critical to the estimation of the national C budget and can help to constitute sustainable forest management policies for climate change. In this study, we explored the spatio-temporal changes in forest biomass C stocks in China between 1977 and 2008, using six periods of the national forest inventory data. According to the definition of the forest inventory, China's forest was categorized into three groups: forest stand, economic forest, and bamboo forest. We estimated forest biomass C stocks for each inventory period by using continuous biomass expansion factor (BEF) method for forest stands, and the mean biomass density method for economic and bamboo forests. As a result, China's forests have accumulated biomass C (i.e., biomass C sink) of 1896 Tg (1Tg=1012g) during the study period, with 1710, 108 and 78 Tg C in forest stands, and economic and bamboo forests, respectively. Annual forest biomass C sink was 70.2 Tg Ca-1 , offsetting 7.8% of the contemporary fossil CO2 emissions in the country. The results also showed that planted forests have functioned as a persistent C sink, sequestrating 818 Tg C and accounting for 47.8% of total C sink in forest stands, and that the old-, mid- and young-aged forests have sequestrated 930, 391 and 388 Tg C from 1977 to 2008. | 5 | Calcified roasting-acid leaching process of vanadium from low-grade vanadium-containing stone coal显示文摘The low-grade vanadium-containing stone coal used in this experiment was collected from Wuxi Country, Chongqing City, China. The experiment focused on the vanadium recovery from roasted residue through optimizing the process conditions of an effective and environmentally-friendly technology, named calcified roasting-sulfuric acid leaching technology. By single-factor experiments and orthogonal experiments, the effects of roasting temperature, roasting time, sulfuric acid concentration and leaching time on the leaching ratio of vanadium were analyzed. | 6 | Cloning of a gene-edited macaque monkey by somatic cell nuclear transfer显示文摘Cloning of macaque monkeys by somatic cell nucleus transfer(SCNT) allows the generation of monkeys with uniform genetic backgrounds that are useful for the development of non-human primate models of human diseases. Here, we report the feasibility of this approach by SCNT of fibroblasts from a macaque monkey(Macaca fascicularis), in which a core circadian transcription factor BMAL1 was knocked out by clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeat/Cas9 gene editing(see accompanying paper).Out of 325 SCNT embryos transferred into 65 surrogate monkeys, we cloned five macaque monkeys with BMAL1 mutations in both alleles without mosaicism, with nuclear genes identical to that of the fibroblast donor monkey. Further peripheral blood m RNA analysis confirmed the complete absence of the wild-type BMAL1 transcript. | 8 | Scenario analysis on the global carbon emissions reduction goal proposed in the declaration of the 2009 G8 Summit显示文摘A goal of a 50% reduction in global greenhouse gases emissions by 2050, with an 80% reduction by developed countries (hereafter referred to as the G8 Goal), was proposed at the G8 Summit held in L’Aquila, Italy, in July 2009. Here we analyze the scientific and political implications of the G8 Goal and its equity and feasibility by examining four greenhouse gas emissions scenarios. Our results show that (1) the goal to keep atmospheric CO2 concentration of <450 ppmv, stated by G8 nations, can only be achieved under the scenario of a steady, linear emissions reduction by all countries and simultaneously meeting the G8 Goal during the period 2005-2050; (2) under the G8 Goal, the carbon emissions quota for developing countries would not meet their carbon emission demands even if very strict reduction regimes are followed, with a gap of up to >1/3 of emissions demand in the next 45 years; and (3) under the G8 Goal, the cumulative per capita emissions during the period of 2006-2050 for developed and developing countries will be 81 t C and 40-47 t C, respectively, with the former doubling that of the latter, implying that the historical disparity of carbon emissions between developed and developing countries would be widened. Historically, the cumulative per capita emissions from developed countries are 12 times of those from developing countries. We therefore conclude that (1) the G8 Goal seeks to impose binding reduction targets on developing countries that will impede their industrialization process and cause conflicts among developing countries in the allocation of carbon emission rights; (2) the G8 Goal will not only widen the existing disparities of historical carbon emissions between developed and developing countries, but also generate new inequalities in the rights of carbon emissions; and (3) the 450 ppmv threshold of atmospheric CO2 concentration control, which is the basis for the G8 Goal, is impractical and impossible, and should not be accepted as the foundation for international climate negotiation on carbon emission reduction. | 11 | Cloning and Functional Characterisation of Carotenoid Cleavage Dioxygenase 4 from Wolfberry显示文摘Carotenoid cleavage dioxygenases(CCDs) are a class of enzymes in plants involved in the biosynthesis of apocarotenoids,such as phytohormones,flavour compounds,and other compounds with yet unknown functions.To date,several CCDs have been functionally characterised in plants,but little is known about the CCD4 members.A carotenoid cleavage dioxygenase 4 gene(LcCCD4) was isolated from the leaves of wolfberry(Lycium chinense) to gain insight into its biological function.Multiple sequence alignment and phylogenetic analyses showed that the deduced amino acid sequence of LcCCD4 shares high homology with that of CCD4 proteins from other plants.Expression analysis using semi-quantitative polymerase chain reaction revealed that LcCCD4 was strongly expressed in leaves and flowers and that the expression level was in accordance with β-carotene concentration.LcCCD4 transcripts in fruits tended to decrease as carotenoids accumulated.Recombinant expression of LcCCD4 cleaved β-carotene to produce P-ionone in in vivo assays.These results show that LcCCD4 is a CCD gene that may be involved in producing aromatic apocarotenoids in leaves and flowers,whereas it may be involved in controlling carotenoid accumulation in fruits. | Xiaowei Tian Jing Ji Gang Wang Chao Jin Cuicui Jia Zhaodi Li | 2017 | Transactions of Tianjin University2017,23,1: | 3 |

| 13 | The Arabidopsis NuA4 histone acetyltransferase complex is required for chlorophyll biosynthesis and photosynthesis显示文摘Although two Enhancer of Polycomb-like proteins,EPL1 A and EPL1 B(EPL1 A/B),are known to be conserved and characteristic subunits of the Nu A4-type histone acetyltransferase complex in Arabidopsis thaliana,the biological function of EPL1 A/B and the mechanism by which EPL1 A/B function in the complex remain unknown.Here,we report that EPL1 A/B are required for the histone acetyltransferase activity of the Nu A4 complex on the nucleosomal histone H4 in vitro and for the enrichment of histone H4 K5 acetylation at thousands of protein-coding genes in vivo.Our results suggest that EPL1 A/B are required for linking the Nu A4 catalytic subunits HISTONE ACETYLTRANSFERASE OF THE MYST FAMILY 1(HAM1)and HAM2 with accessory subunits in the Nu A4 complex.EPL1 A/B function redundantly in regulating plant development especially in chlorophyll biosynthesis and de-etiolation.The EPL1 A/B-dependent transcription and H4 K5 Ac are enriched at genes involved in chlorophyll biosynthesis and photosynthesis.We also find that EAF6,another characteristic subunit of the Nu A4 complex,contributes to de-etiolation.These results suggest that the Arabidopsis Nu A4 complex components function as a whole to mediate histone acetylation and transcriptional activation specifically at light-responsive genes and are critical for photomorphogenesis. | Jin-Xing Zhou Xiao-Min Su Si-Yao Zheng Chan-Juan Wu Yin-Na Su Zhaodi Jiang Lin Li She Chen Xin-Jian He | 2022 | Journal of Integrative Plant Biology2022,64,4: | 2 |
| 14 | Melatonin alleviates alcoholic liver disease via EGFR-BRG1-TERT axis regulation显示文摘Chronic alcohol consumption causes liver steatosis,cell death,and inflammation.Melatonin(MLT)is reported to alleviate alcoholic liver disease(ALD)-induced injury.However,its direct regulating targets in hepatocytes are not fully understood.In the current study,a cell-based screening model and a chronic ethanol-fed mice ALD model were used to test the protective mechanisms of MLT.MLT ameliorated ethanol-induced hepatocyte injury in both cell and animal models(optimal doses of 10μmol/L and 5 mg/kg,respectively),including lowered liver steatosis,cell death,and inflammation.RNA-seq analysis and loss-of-function studies in AML-12 cells revealed that telomerase reverse transcriptase(TERT)was a key downstream effector of MLT.Biophysical assay found that epidermal growth factor receptor(EGFR)on the hepatocyte surface was a direct binding and regulating target of MLT.Liver specific knock-down of Tert or Egfr in the ALD mice model impaired MLT-mediated liver protection,partly through the regulation of nuclear brahma-related gene-1(BRG1).Long-term administration(90 days)of MLT in healthy mice did not cause evident adverse effect.In conclusion,MLT is an efficacious and safe agent for ALD alleviation.Its direct regulating target in hepatocytes is EGFR and downstream BRG1-TERT axis.MLT might be used as a complimentary agent for alcoholics. | Zhaodi Che Yali Song Chengfang Xu Wei Li Zhiyong Dong Cunchuan Wang Yixing Ren Kwok-Fai So George L.Tipoe Fei Wang Jia Xiao | 2023 | Acta Pharmaceutica Sinica B2023,13,1: | 2 |
