| 1 | Ammonium removal pathways and microbial community in GAC-sand dual media filter in drinking water treatment显示文摘A GAC-sand dual media filter(GSF) was devised as an alternative solution for drinking water treatment plant to tackle the raw water polluted by ammonium in place of expensive ozone-GAC processes or bio-pretreatments.The ammonium removal pathways and microbial community in the GSFs were investigated.The concentrations of ammonium,nitrite and nitrate nitrogen were monitored along the filter.Total inorganic nitrogen(TIN) loss occurred during the filtration.For 1 mg ammonium removal,the TIN loss was as high as 0.35 mg,DO consumption was 3.06 mg,and alkalinity consumption was 5.55 mg.It was assumed that both nitrification and denitrification processes occur in the filters to fit the TIN loss and low DO consumption.During the filtration,nitritation,nitrification and nitritation-anaerobic ammonium oxidation processes probably occur,while traditional nitrification and denitrification and simultaneous nitrification and denitrification processes may occur.In the GSFs,Nitrosomonas and Nitrospira are likely to be involved in nitrification processes,while Novosphingobium,Comamonadaceae and Oxalobacteraceae may be involved in denitrification processes. | Shuo Feng Shuguang Xie Xiaojian Zhang Zhiyu Yang Wei Ding Xiaobin Liao Yuanyuan Liu Chao Chen | 2012 | Journal of Environmental Sciences2012,24,9: | 14 |
| 2 | Optimization design and analysis of Si-^(63)Ni betavoltaic battery显示文摘Among the various micro-powers being investigated, betavoltaic batteries are very attractive for numerous applications because of their advantages of high energy density, long life, strong anti-interference, and so on. Based on the basic principle of the betavoltaic effect, the current paper adopted the Monte Carlo N-Particle code to simulate the transport processes of β particles in semiconductor materials and to establish the calculation formulas for nuclear radiation-generated current, open circuit voltage, and so on. By discussing the effect of minority carrier diffusion length, doping concentration, and junction depth on the property of batteries, the present work concluded that the best parameters for batteries are the use of silicon and the radioisotope Ni-63, i.e., Ni-63 with a mass thickness of 1 mg/cm2, Na=1×1019 cm-3, Nd=3.16×1016 cm-3, junction area of 1 cm2, junction depth of 0.3 μm, and so on. Under these parameters the short-circuit current, open circuit voltage, output power, and conversion efficiency are 573.3 nA, 0.253 V, 99.85 nW, and 4.94%, respectively. | 3 | Insight into fouling behavior of poly(vinylidene fluoride)(PVDF)hollow fiber membranes caused by dextran with different pore size distributions显示文摘Membrane fouling is the key problem that occurs in membrane process for water treatment. However, how membrane microstructure influences the fouling behavior is still not clear. In this study, fouling behavior caused by dextran was deeply and systematically investigated by employing four poly(vinylidene fluoride)(PVDF)membranes with different pore sizes, ranging from 24 to 94 nm. The extent of fouling by dextran was accurately characterized by pore reduction, flux decline, and the change of critical flux. The result shows that membrane with the smallest pore size of 24 nm experienced the smallest fouling rate and the lowest fouling extent. As the membrane pore size increased, the critical flux ranges were 105-114, 63-73, 38-44 and 34-43 L·m^(-2)·h^(-1),respectively. The critical flux and fouling resistances indicated that the fouling propensity increases with the increase of membrane pore size. Two pilot membrane modules with mean pore size of 25 nm and 60 nm were applied in membrane filtration of surface water treatment. | 4 | Scalable volumetric imaging for ultrahigh-speed brain mapping at synaptic resolution显示文摘The speed of high-resolution optical imaging has been a rate-limiting factor for meso-scale mapping of brain structures and functional circuits,which is of fundamental importance for neuroscience research.Here,we describe a new microscopy method of Volumetric Imaging with Synchronized on-the-fly-scan and Readout(VISo R)for high-throughput,high-quality brain mapping.Combining synchronized scanning beam illumination and oblique imaging over cleared tissue sections in smooth motion,the VISo R system effectively eliminates motion blur to obtain undistorted images.By continuously imaging moving samples without stopping,the system achieves high-speed 3D image acquisition of an entire mouse brain within1.5 hours,at a resolution capable of visualizing synaptic spines.A pipeline is developed for sample preparation,imaging,3D image reconstruction and quantification.Our approach is compatible with immunofluorescence methods,enabling flexible cell-type specific brain mapping and is readily scalable for large biological samples such as primate brains.Using this system,we examined behaviorally relevant whole-brain neuronal activation in 16 c-Fos-sh EGFP mice under resting or forced swimming conditions.Our results indicate the involvement of multiple subcortical areas in stress response.Intriguingly,neuronal activation in these areas exhibits striking individual variability among different animals,suggesting the necessity of sufficient cohort size for such studies. | Hao Wang Qingyuan Zhu Lufeng Ding Yan Shen Chao-Yu Yang Fang Xu Chang Shu Yujie Guo Zhiwei Xiong Qinghong Shan Fan Jia Peng Su Qian-Ru Yang Bing Li Yuxiao Cheng Xiaobin He Xi Chen Feng Wu Jiang-Ning Zhou Fuqiang Xu Hua Han Pak-Ming Lau Guo-Qiang Bi | 2019 | National Science Review2019,6,5: | 7 |

| 13 | Injectable and thermosensitive hydrogels mediating a universal macromolecular contrast agent with radiopacity for noninvasive imaging of deep tissues显示文摘It is very challenging to visualize implantable medical devices made of biodegradable polymers in deep tissues.Herein,we designed a novel macromolecular contrast agent with ultrahigh radiopacity(iodinate content>50%)via polymerizing an iodinated trimethylene carbonate monomer into the two ends of poly(ethylene glycol)(PEG).A set of thermosensitive and biodegradable polyester-PEG-polyester triblock copolymers with varied polyester compositions synthesized by us,which were soluble in water at room temperature and could spontaneously form hydrogels at body temperature,were selected as the demonstration materials.The addition of macromolecular contrast agent did not obviously compromise the injectability and thermogelation properties of polymeric hydrogels,but conferred them with excellent X-ray opacity,enabling visualization of the hydrogels at clinically relevant depths through X-ray fluoroscopy or Micro-CT.In a mouse model,the 3D morphology of the radiopaque hydrogels after injection into different target sites was visible using Micro-CT imaging,and their injection volume could be accurately obtained.Furthermore,the subcutaneous degradation process of a radiopaque hydrogel could be non-invasively monitored in a real-time and quantitative manner.In particular,the corrected degradation curve based on Micro-CT imaging well matched with the degradation profile of virgin polymer hydrogel determined by the gravimetric method.These findings indicate that the macromolecular contrast agent has good universality for the construction of various radiopaque polymer hydrogels,and can nondestructively trace and quantify their degradation in vivo.Meanwhile,the present methodology developed by us affords a platform technology for deep tissue imaging of polymeric materials. | Xiaohui Wu Xin Wang Xiaobin Chen Xiaowei Yang Qian Ma Guohua Xu Lin Yu Jiandong Ding | 2021 | Bioactive Materials2021,6,12: | 1 |
