| 1 | Clostridium difficile infections in China显示文摘Clostridium difficile (C. difficile) infection has become one of the major hospital-associated infections in West-ern countries in the last two decades. However, there is limited information on the status of C. difficile infection inChinese healthcare settings. Given the large and increasing elderly population and the well-recognized problem ofover-prescribing of broad spectrum antibiotics in China, it is critical to understand the epidemiology and potentialrisk factors that may contribute to C. difficile infection in China. A literature review of available published studies,including those in Chinese language-based journals, was conducted. A review of the currently available literaturesuggested the presence of C. difficile infections in China, but also suggested that these infections were not particu-larly endemic. This finding should lead to better designed and greatly expanded studies to provide a more reliableepidemiologically-based conclusion on the actual status of C. difficile infection in China, including the identifica-tion of any associated risk factors. | 2 | Artemisinin derivatives inhibit epithelial ovarian cancer cells via autophagy-mediated cell cycle arrest显示文摘Epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC)is the most fatal gynecologic malignancy due to its late diagnosis and lack of curative therapy.The antimalaria compound artemisinin and its derivatives,such as artesunate (ART)and dihydroartemisinin (DHA),have proven to be potent anticancer drugs and act through various anticancer mechanisms.To identify novel targets of artemisinin derivatives in EOC cells,we investigated the effects of ART and DHA on SKOV3 and primary EOC cell growth via CCK-8 assay.Both ART and DHA inhibited EOC cell growth.A cell cycle distribution analysis showed that ART and DHA caused G2/M cell cycle arrest.Moreover,ART and DHA induced autophagy in EOC cells,whereas autophagy inhibitors reversed the cell growth inhibition and cell cycle arrest induced by ART and DHA.Western blot analysis showed that ART and DHA also suppressed the cell cycle-related NF-κB-signaling pathway in EOC cells.These data suggest that artemisinin derivatives induce autophagy,block the cell cycle,and inhibit cell growth in EOC cells.Our research provides new targets for artemisinin derivatives for EOC treatment. | Boning Li Shixia Bu Junyan Sun Ying Guo Dongmei Lai | 2018 | Acta Biochimica et Biophysica Sinica2018,50,12: | 11 |
| 3 | A Geometric Understanding of Deep Learning显示文摘This work introduces an optimal transportation(OT)view of generative adversarial networks(GANs).Natural datasets have intrinsic patterns,which can be summarized as the manifold distribution principle:the distribution of a class of data is close to a low-dimensional manifold.GANs mainly accomplish two tasks:manifold learning and probability distribution transformation.The latter can be carried out using the classical OT method.From the OT perspective,the generator computes the OT map,while the discriminator computes the Wasserstein distance between the generated data distribution and the real data distribution;both can be reduced to a convex geometric optimization process.Furthermore,OT theory discovers the intrinsic collaborative-instead of competitive-relation between the generator and the discriminator,and the fundamental reason for mode collapse.We also propose a novel generative model,which uses an autoencoder(AE)for manifold learning and OT map for probability distribution transformation.This AE–OT model improves the theoretical rigor and transparency,as well as the computational stability and efficiency;in particular,it eliminates the mode collapse.The experimental results validate our hypothesis,and demonstrate the advantages of our proposed model. | Na Lei Dongsheng An Yang Guo Kehua Su Shixia Liu Zhongxuan Luo Shing-Tung Yau Xianfeng Gu | 2020 | Engineering2020,6,3: | 10 |

| 6 | Structure,rheology and electrospinning of zein and poly(ethylene oxide) in aqueous ethanol solutions显示文摘Electrospun fiber mats (EFM) integrated proteins and biocompatible polymers have been widely used as tissue scaffold, wound dressing and food packaging. The morphology of EFM has strong correlation with the structure and rheology of the solutions. We studied the structure and rheology of polyethylene oxide (PEO) and zein in 80% ethanol aqueous solutions and the resulted EFM. In solutions, zein with rod-like conformation tends to aggregate and form oligomer, the number of proteins in the oligomer spans from 2.5 to 55.2, while PEO always behaves like Gaussian chain in good solvent. Zein preferred to distribute along PEO chains in their mixed solutions, and the structures decomposed from small angle X-ray scattering have consistent relaxation spatial-temporal characteristics with rheological behaviors.Further, the aging of zein solutions enhanced shear thinning and resulted thicker fibers in EFM, which are attributed to the rod-like growth of zein aggregates. Aggregates in viscous media with long enough relaxation time are probably crucial for the formation of continuous electrospun fibers or ribbons. | 8 | The position of tree shrews in the mammalian tree:Comparing multi-gene analyses with phylogenomic results leaves monophyly of Euarchonta doubtful显示文摘The well-accepted Euarchonta grandorder is a pruned version of Archonta nested within the Euarchontoglires(or Supraprimates)clade.At present,it includes tree shrews(Scandentia),flying lemurs(Dermoptera)and primates(Primates).Here,a phylogenomic dataset containing 1912 exons from 22 representative mammals was compiled to investigate the phylogenetic relationships within this group.Phylogenetic analyses and hypothesis testing suggested that tree shrews can be classified as a sister group to Primates or to Glires or even as a basal clade within Euarchontoglires.Further analyses of both modified and original previously published datasets found that the phylogenetic position of tree shrews is unstable.We also found that two of three exonic indels reported as synapomorphies of Euarchonta in a previous study do not unambiguously support the monophyly of such a clade.Therefore,the monophyly of both Euarchonta and Sundatheria(Dermoptera+Scandentia)are suspect.Molecular dating and divergence rate analyses suggested that the ancestor of Euarchontoglires experienced a rapid divergence,which may cause the unresolved position of tree shrews even using the whole genomic data. | Xuming ZHOU Fengming SUN Shixia XU Guang YANG Ming LI | 2015 | Integrative Zoology2015,10,2: | 2 |
