| 1 | Sequence analysis of the gene correlated with cytoplasmic male sterility (CMS) in rape-seed (Brassica napus) Polima and Shaan 2A显示文摘orf224 is a CMS-related mitochondrial gene discovered in Polima cytoplasm. Shaan 2A CMS line is the parent of the first rapeseed hybrid cultivar Qinyou No. 2 that has been grown in many regions of China. In this work, genomic DNA of Polima CMS line and Shaan 2A CMS line were used as templates, two primers of specific oligonucleo-tides at 5’ and 3’ ends were used, PCR was performed, the amplification fragments were cloned into pGEM-T Easy vectors and DNA sequences were determined. The CMS-associated gene, orf224-1 present in Shaan 2A CMS line, has a sequence highly homologous to the orf224 of the Polima CMS line, except for one nucleotidc at position +398. There were only one base (AAC→AGC) and one amino acid (Asn→Ser) differences between the two. The homologies of the two sequences in nucleotide and amino acid were 99.9% and 99.6%, respectively. | 2 | Measures for controlling large deformations of underground caverns under high in-situ stress condition--A case study of JinpingⅠhydropower station显示文摘The Jinping Ⅰ hydropower station is a huge water conservancy project consisting of the highest concrete arch dam to date in the world and a highly complex and large underground powerhouse cavern.It is located on the right bank with extremely high in-situ stress and a few discontinuities observed in surrounding rock masses.The problems of rock mass deformation and failure result in considerable challenges related to project design and construction and have raised a wide range of concerns in the fields of rock mechanics and engineering.During the excavation of underground caverns,high in-situ stress and relatively low rock mass strength in combination with large excavation dimensions lead to large deformation of the surrounding rock mass and support.Existing experiences in excavation and support cannot deal with the large deformation of rock mass effectively,and further studies are needed.In this paper,the geological conditions,layout of caverns,and design of excavation and support are first introduced,and then detailed analyses of deformation and failure characteristics of rocks are presented.Based on this,the mechanisms of deformation and failure are discussed,and the support adjustments for controlling rock large deformation and subsequent excavation procedures are proposed.Finally,the effectiveness of support and excavation adjustments to maintain the stability of the rock mass is verified.The measures for controlling the large deformation of surrounding rocks enrich the practical experiences related to the design and construction of large underground openings,and the construction of caverns in the Jinping Ⅰ hydropower station provides a good case study of large-scale excavation in highly stressed ground with complex geological structures,as well as a reference case for research on rock mechanics. | Shengwu Song Xuemin Feng Chenggang Liao Dewen Cai Zhongxu Liu Yunhao Yang | 2016 | Journal of Rock Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering2016,8,5: | 5 |

Recent reinvestigation of the Hsiangchi Flora from the Lower Jurassic of West Hubei, China, obtained a rich collection of well preserved Phlebopteris specimens (both sterile and fertile). Studies on Phlebopteris polypodioides Brongniart using LM and SEM reveal not only the structures of sori and sporangia, but also the details of in situ spores. | 4 | Comparative toxicity study of a novel non-ionic surfactant,vanillin ethoxylates, and nonylphenol ethoxylates in Chinese hamster ovary cells in vitro显示文摘Surfactants such as alkylphenol polyethoxylates(APEOs) and nonylphenol ethoxylates(NPEOs) are commonly used worldwide, but the majority of these compounds, together with their metabolites, have been reported to induce severe biological toxicity. Here, we evaluated for the first time the cytotoxicity,genotoxicity and mitochondrial damage in Chinese hamster ovary(CHO-K1) cells caused by a novel non-ionic surfactant, vanillin ethoxylates(VAEOs), an alternative to APEOs. In parallel, the same in vitro bioassays were conducted on NPEOs along with their metabolic byproducts 4-nonylphenol(4-NP) and vanillin. The results showed that the cytotoxic potency order was NPEOs > 4-NP > VAEOs>vanillin using CCK-8 assays. Also, 4-NP showed potential direct DNA damage in SOS/umu tests, whereas NPEOs, VAEOs and vanillin showed no positive result with and without S9 addition. In addition, none of the test compounds showed obvious genotoxic effects with low olive tail moment value using comet assays. However, all test compounds were shown to cause mitochondrial impairment by increasing mitochondrial mass and decreasing mitochondrial membrane potential in a concentration-dependent manner. And further analysis of reactive oxygen species(ROS) and mitochondrial superoxide(MNSOD)measurement showed that mitochondrial impairment was induced by oxidative stress with intracellular ROS and MNSOD overproduction. It's worth noting that VAEOs and vanillin cause relative lower cytotoxic, genotoxic and mitochondrial damage effects than NPEOs and 4-NP, indicating that VAEOs have the potential to substitute NPEOs as suitable surfactants. | 7 | Robust superamphiphobic coatings with gradient and hierarchical architecture and excellent anti-flashover performances显示文摘Biomimetic superhydrophobic(SH)coatings have emerged as a promising alternative to traditional room temperature vulcanizing(RTV)silicone rubber coatings for improving the flashover strength of insulators.However,organic contamination occurs in outdoor applications and thus a superamphiphobic(SAP)surface is more desirable but not yet reported for improving flashover performance.Herein,we developed a novel anti-flashover technique by fabricating robust SAP coating with unique gradient and micro-nanoscale hierarchical architecture.The SAP coating was fabricated by sequentially spray-depositing a resin-based primer and a silica-based topcoat on substrates(i.e.,glass slides and insulators).The primer not only functions as an adhesive offering strong adhesion to the substrate but also offers a micromastoid-like structure facilitating the subsequent formation of hierarchical micro-nanostructure.The appropriate spraying pressure leads to a diffusion of the fluorocarbon-modified silica nanoparticles into the primer to form a unique gradient structure,by analogy to inserting bullets into a wood.These features render the SAP coating excellent robustness with strong abrasive resistance,excellent ultraviolet(UV)resistance,and excellent chemical and thermal stability.Pollution flashover property of the SAP coating was explored and compared with that of SH and RTV specimens,from which a novel organic-contamination model to evaluate the flashover performance was proposed.The coated SAP glass insulator demonstrated 42.9%pollution flashover voltage improvement than RTV-coated insulator.These stated unique features reveal the convincing potential of the present SAP coatings to be applied for not only outdoor transmission line insulators for antiflashover but also other fields for self-cleaning,anti-fouling,and anti-icing. | Yi Xie Wei Xiong Shefiu Kareem Chuxiong Qiu Yongfei Hu Ivan PParkin Shengwu Wang Huayun Wang Junwu Chen Lee Li Zhi Chen Huajun Sun Xiujian Zhao | 2022 | Nano Research2022,15,8: | 2 |
| 8 | Alternatively spliced BobCAL transcripts alter curd morphotypes in a collection of Chinese cauliflower accessions显示文摘The curd of cauliflower(Brassica oleracea L.var.botrytis)is a modified inflorescence that is consumed as a vegetable.Curd formation is proposed to be due to a mutation in the BobCAULIFLOWER(BobCAL)gene,but the genetic relationship between BobCAL variation and curd morphotypes remains obscure.To address this question,we collected and classified a collection of 78 cauliflower accessions into four subpopulations according to curd surface features:smooth,coarse,granular,and hairy curd morphotypes.Through the cDNA sequencing of BobCAL alleles,we showed that smooth and coarse accessions characterized by inflorescence meristem arrest presented a strong association with the 451T SNP(BobCAL_T),whereas granular and hairy accessions marked with floral organ arrest presented an association with 451G(BobCAL_G).Interestingly,all BobCAL alleles were alternatively spliced,resulting in a total of four alternative splice(AS)variants due to the retention of the fourth and/or seventh introns.Among accessions with BobCAL_G alleles,the total expression of all these AS variants in granular plants was almost equal to that in hairy plants;however,the expression of the individual AS variants encoding intact proteins relative to those encoding truncated proteins differed.Hairy accessions showed relatively high expression of the individual variants encoding intact proteins,whereas granular accessions displayed relatively low expression.In smooth cauliflower,the overexpression of the BobCAL_Ga variant caused an alteration in the curd morphotype from smooth to hairy,concurrent with an increase in the expression levels of downstream floral identity genes.These results reveal that alternative splicing of BobCAL transcripts is involved in the determination of cauliflower curd morphotypes. | Wenguang Cao Biting Cao Xuan Wang Jinjuan Bai Yong-Zhen Xu Jianjun Zhao Xiaorong Li Yuke He Shengwu Hu | 2020 | Horticulture Research2020,7,1: | 2 |
| 9 | Comparing community birdwatching and professional bird monitoring with implications for avian diversity research: a case study of Suzhou, China显示文摘Background:In the past decades,birdwatching as a hobby developed rapidly and produced ample scientific records that have aided conservation efforts.Therefore,it is increasingly attractive to promote avian research by providing data from birdwatching.Methods:We compared records from 16 years of community birdwatching and a 1-year formalized bird monitoring in Suzhou,China to study the similarities and differences between the two monitoring methods.Results:We showed that within the 325 bird species recorded by the two methods,an annual average of 108 species were documented by community science and 223 bird species were recorded by 1-year formalized monitoring.Measured by the number of bird species recorded per survey trip,the bird monitoring activity of community birdwatchers was significantly lower.Furthermore,the monitoring intensity of community birdwatching measured as the average survey trips per site each survey year was also lower than that of formalized bird monitoring.In addition,community birdwatchers preferred urban landscapes to rural areas.Conclusions:Community birdwatching could record the majority of local birds and complements the professional surveys in avian research.Well designed and coordinated community science can be used to expand the knowledge about avian distribution and population dynamics.These findings are critical for the development of conservation science with regard to community involvement. | Yan Zhou Anping Chen Jenny QOuyang Yanlin Liu Aiyu Zheng Zaixi Yang Yong Zhang Bin Wang Yifei Jia Shengwu Jiao Qing Zeng Changhu Lu | 2020 | Avian Research2020,11,2: | 2 |

| 12 | Mechanical properties and deformation mechanisms of a novel fine-grained Mg-Gd-Y-Ag-Zr-Ce alloy with high strength-ductility synergy显示文摘Grain boundary precipitation and segregation play an important role in determining mechanical properties of Mg alloys. In the present work, we studied work focuses on the strengthening and deformation mechanism of coarse-grained(CG) and fine-grained(FG) Mg-Gd-Y-Ag-Zr-Ce alloy. The CG alloy is strengthened by means of age-strengthening with the formation of both basal plate γ' and prismatic plate β’ precipitates in the grain interior. While the strengthening of FC alloy is completed by intergranular alloying segregation and intragranular precipitates γ' and β’. The segregation of alloying elements at the grain boundary and formation of sub-micron particles can stabilize the grain boundary and suppress the intergranular deformation. Consequently, dislocations could be trapped near γ' and β’ precipitates in the grain interior. Unlike CG alloys, the FG alloys exhibit a heterogeneous transition from elastic to plastic deformation via the Lüders plateau. The rapid gliding dislocation multiplications and fine-grained size are necessary and sufficient conditions for the Lüders strains. | 13 | Treatment design of geological defects in dam foundation of Jinping I hydropower station显示文摘Jinping I hydropower station is one of the most challenging projects in China due to its highest arch dam and complex geological conditions for construction.After geological investigation into the dam foundation,a few large-scale weak discontinuities are observed.The rock masses in the left dam foundation are intensively unloaded,approximately to the depth of 150–300 m.These serious geological defects lead to a geological asymmetry on the left and right banks,and thus some major diffculties of dam construction are encountered.In this paper,the influences of geological defects on the project are analyzed,followed by the concepts and methods of treatment design.Based on the analysis,the treatment methods of the weak rock masses and discontinuities are carefully determined,including the concrete cushion,concrete replacement grids,and consolidation grouting.They work together to enhance the strength and integrity of the dam foundation.Evaluations and calibrations through geo-mechanical model tests in combination with feld monitoring results in early impoundment period show that the arch dam and its foundation are roughly stable,suggesting that the treatment designs are reasonable and effective.The proposed treatment methods and concepts in the context can be helpful for similar complex rock projects. | Shengwu Song Xuemin Feng Hongling Rao Hanhuai Zheng | 2013 | Journal of Rock Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering2013,5,5: | 1 |
