| 1 | Inoperable esophageal cancer and outcome of palliative care显示文摘AIM:To determine the outcome of esophageal cancer patients referred for palliative care,in Gorgan and Gonbad gastrointestinal clinics,northeast of Iran. METHODS:This cross-sectional study was done on inoperable esophageal cancer cases referred to gastrointestinal clinics in Gorgan and Gonbad city(2005-2006) . Demographic data were collected during the procedure and cases were followed up every one month. Improvement proportion was calculated with 95% confidence interval,to determine the rate of improvement. Survival analysis and Kaplan-Meier methods were used to estimate the duration of palliative care effectiveness. RESULTS:We recruited 39 cases into the study. Squamous cell carcinoma was the most prevalent(92.3%) . The middle third of the esophagus was involved predominantly(51.3%) . Dilation was the most preferred method(89.7%) and stenting was done in 4 cases. Decreasing dysphagia score was not related to palliation method or pathology type of carcinoma. Age of the patients was significantly related to the improvement of dysphagia score. Mean survival time was 137.6 d and median was 103 d. | 3 | The impact of ipsilateral testicular atrophy on semen quality and sperm DNA fragmentation response to varicocele repair显示文摘Varicoceles adversely impact semen quality and sperm DNA fragmentation,which typically improve with surgical repair.Some men with varicoceles have ipsilateral testicular atrophy due to damage from the varicocele.This study assessed semen quality and the sperm DNA fragmentation index(DFI)response to varicocele repair in men with ipsilateral testicular atrophy(TA)versus men with no testicular atrophy(NTA).Semen parameter values and DFI in both groups were compared preoperatively and postoperatively.The Mann-Whitney U test and the Wilcoxon signed-rank test were used where appropriate.There were 20 men in the TA group and 121 men in the NTA group with no difference in age,varicocele grade,or preoperative semen parameter values between the two groups.The NTA group had a higher preoperative DFI than the TA group.Both groups showed improvement in semen quality postoperatively,only the TA group showed a significant improvement in DFI,whereas the NTA group showed significant improvements in several parameter values and DFI.The change from preoperative to postoperative parameter values when comparing the two groups revealed a difference in total sperm motile count and DFI,with a larger mean improvement in the NTA group than in the TA group.Both TA and NTA groups showed improved semen quality and DFI after varicocele repair,but the NTA group had more improvement than the TA group.However,only total motile count(TMC)and DFI had a significantly greater mean change in preoperative to postoperative response in the NTA group than in the TA group. | Parviz K Kavoussi Natasha Abdullah Melissa S Gilkey Caitlin Hunn G Luke Machen Shu-Hung Chen Keikhosrow M Kavoussi Amy Esqueda J David Wininger Shahryar K Kavoussi | 2021 | Asian Journal of Andrology2021，23，2： | 2 |
| 4 | Effects of replacing steam-flaked corn with shredded sugar beet pulp on feed sorting, behavior, blood metabolites, and growth performance of dairy calves显示文摘This experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of partial replacement of steam-flaked corn(SFC)with shredded sugar beet pulp(SBP)in the starter diet on selective intake(sorting),feeding and chewing behavior,blood biochemical parameters,and growth in newborn female Holstein dairy calves.A total of 48 calves(3 d old;40.1±0.84 kg body weight;mean±SE)were randomly assigned to 1 of 2 feeding treatments containing 0 or 25%SBP(percentage of dry matter[DM])in the starter diet.Calves were weaned on d 61 and remained in the study until d 81.Intake of starter feed and total intake of DM(milk DM+starter feed DM),crude protein,and neutral detergent fiber were increased(P<0.05)by feeding SBP;however,intake of starch(P<0.01)and total intake of ether extract(P=0.03)were decreased with no apparent effect on total intake of ME.Average daily gain,feed efficiency,final weight,and skeletal growth also showed no significant changes.Circulating concentrations of glucose,total protein,and albumin were not affected by partial replacement of SBP with SFC;however,higher concentrations of blood urea-N(P=0.01)and a lower albumin-to-globulin ratio(P=0.03)were observed in SBP-vs.SFC-fed calves.Calves fed SBP sorted more for particles retained on the 4.75-mm sieve(P=0.02)and against particles retained on the 0.6-mm sieve and bottom pan(P<0.01).Intake of neutral detergent fibers and starch from particles retained on all sieve fractions was increased and decreased(P<0.01),respectively,by replacing SFC with SBP.Replacement of SBP with SFC was associated with increased meal length and meal size and increased rumination frequency and length,but decreased intervals between rumination(P≤0.01).Calves fed SBP spent more time eating,rumination,and standing and less time lying and non-nutritive oral behaviors(P<0.01).In general,25%replacement of SFC with SBP did not affect calf performance but increased time spent rumination and eating and decreased non-nutritive oral behaviors. | Shahryar Kargar Zohre Kowsar Mehdi Poorhamdollah Meysam Kanani Kianoosh Asasi Morteza H.Ghaffari | 2021 | Animal Nutrition2021，，4： | 2 |

| 6 | Comparative Study of Micro and Nano Size WO3/E44 Epoxy Composite as Gamma Radiation Shielding Using MCNP and Experiment显示文摘The radiation shielding characteristics of 50 wt% WO_3/E44 epoxy composite in various gamma energies from80 keV to 1.33 MeV are investigated via the MCNP code. Thus two scales are considered for WO_3 filler particles:micro and nano with sizes of 1,um and 50 nm, respectively. The simulation results show that WO_3 nano particles exhibit a larger increase in linear attenuation coefficient in comparison with micro size particles.
