Diabetes mellitus and stroke: A clinical update显示文摘Cardiovascular disease including stroke is a major complication that tremendously increases the morbidity and mortality in patients with diabetes mellitus(DM). DM poses about four times higher risk for stroke. Cardiometabolic risk factors including obesity, hypertension, and dyslipidaemia often co-exist in patients with DM that add on to stroke risk. Because of the strong association between DM and other stroke risk factors, physicians and diabetologists managing patients should have thorough understanding of these risk factors and management. This review is an evidence-based approach to the epidemiological aspects, pathophysiology, diagnostic work up and management algorithms for patients with diabetes and stroke. | Nyo Nyo Tun Ganesan Arunagirinathan Sunil K Munshi Joseph M Pappachan | 2017 | World Journal of Diabetes2017,8,6: | 15
Histone modifications dictate specific biological readouts显示文摘The basic unit of chromatin is the nucleosomal core particle, containing 147 bp of DNA that wraps twice around an octamer of core histones. The core histones bear a highly dynamic N-terminal amino acid tail around 20?35 residues in length and rich in basic amino acids. These tails extending from the surface of nucleosome play an important role in folding of nucleosomal arrays into higher order chromatin structure, which plays an important role in eukaryotic gene regulation. The amino terminal tails protruding from the nuclesomes get modified by the addition of small groups such as methyl, acetyl and phosphoryl groups. In this review, we focus on these complex modification patterns and their biological functions. Moreover, these modifications seem to be part of a complex scheme where distinct histone modifications act in a sequential manner or in combination to form a'histone code'read by other proteins to control the structure and/or function of the chromatin fiber.Errors in this histone code may be involved in many human diseases especially cancer, the nature of which could be therapeutically exploited.Increasing evidence suggests that many proteins bear multiple, distinct modifications, and the ability of one modification to antagonize or synergize the deposition of another can have significant biological consequences. | Anjana Munshi Gowhar Shafi Nishat Aliya Akka Jyothy | 2009 | Journal of Genetics and Genomics2009,36,2: | 10
Genetics of Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease:An Overview显示文摘Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD) is the most common liver disease in the world today. Its incidence in adults and children is rising rapidly due to the ongoing epidemics of obesity and type 2 diabetes.Hence,it has become a global public health issue.Environmental factors have been found to play a major role in the etiology of NAFLD,especially for genetically susceptible populations. Among these, one of the most important factors is junk food, especially the typical 'Western-style' diet rich in simple carbohydrates, saturated fat,and highly processed food materials.Genetic predisposition to NAFLD does occur;however,a precise definition of genetic factors responsible for NAFLD is still lacking.Specific variants of different genes have been shown to present a risk for NAFLD.Genetic studies might be helpful in the management of the disease by developing novel treatment strategies based on individual's genotype. | Jharna Puppala Siva Prasad Siddapuram Jyothy Akka Anjana Munshi | 2013 | Journal of Genetics and Genomics2013,40,1: | 5

Disentangling multiple scattering with deep learning:application to strain mapping from electron diffraction patterns显示文摘A fast, robust pipeline for strain mapping of crystalline materials is important for many technological applications.Scanning electron nanodiffraction allows us to calculate strain maps with high accuracy and spatial resolutions, but this technique is limited when the electron beam undergoes multiple scattering.Deep-learning methods have the potential to invert these complex signals, but require a large number of training examples. We implement a Fourier space,complex-valued deep-neural network,FCU-Net,to invert highly nonlinear electron diffraction patterns into the corresponding quantitative structure factor images.FCU-Net was trained using over 200,000 unique simulated dynamical diffraction patterns from different combinations of crystal structures, orientations, thicknesses, and microscope parameters, which are augmented with experimental artifacts. We evaluated FCU-Net against simulated and experimental datasets, where it substantially outperforms conventional analysis methods. Our code, models, and training library are open-source and may be adapted to different diffraction measurement problems. | Joydeep Munshi Alexander Rakowski Benjamin H.Savitzky Steven E.Zeltmann Jim Ciston Matthew Henderson Shreyas Cholia Andrew M.Minor Maria K.Y.Chan Colin Ophus | 2022 | npj Computational Materials2022,,1: | 2

Multisystem inflammatory syndrome in pediatric COVID-19 patients:a meta-analysis显示文摘Background We aimed to systematically review the clinical and laboratory features of patients with the multisystem inflam-matory syndrome in pediatrics diagnosed during the COVID-19 pandemic.Data sources A literature search in Web of Science,PubMed,Scopus, and Science Direct was made up to June 29,2020.Results Analysis of 15 articles(318 COVID-19 patients)revealed that although many patients presented with the typical multisystem inflammatory syndrome in pediatrics,Kawasaki-like features as fever(82.4%),polymorphous maculopapular exanthema(63.7%),oral mucosal changes(58.1%),conjunctival injections(56.0%),edematous extremities(40.7%),and cervical lymphadenopathy(28.5%),atypical gastrointestinal(79.4%)and neurocognitive symptoms(31.8%)were also com-mon.They had elevated serum lactic acid dehydrogenase,D-dimer,C-reactive protein,procalcitonin,interleukin-6,troponin I levels, and lymphopenia.Nearly 77.0%developed hypotension, and 68.1%went into shock, while 41.1%had acute kidney injury.Intensive care was needed in 73.7%of cases;13.2%were intubated, and 37.9%required mechanical ventilation.Intravenous immunoglobulins and steroids were given in 87.7%and 56.9%of the patients, respectively, and anticoagulants were utilized in 67.0%.Pediatric patients were discharged after a hospital stay of 6.77 days on average(95%CI 4.93-8.6).Conclusions Recognizing the typical and atypical presentation of the multisystem inflammatory syndrome in pediatric COVID-19 patients has important implications in identifying children at risk.Monitoring cardiac and renal decompensation and early interventions in patients with multisystem inflammatory syndrome is critical to prevent further morbidity. | Eman A.Toraih Mohammad H.Hussein Rami M.Elshazli Adam Kline Ruhul Munshi Nasrin Sultana Sharven Taghavi Mary Killackey Juan Duchesne Manal S.Fawzy Emad Kandil | 2021 | World Journal of Pediatrics2021,17,2: | 2
