Microwave assisted digestion followed by ICP-MS for determination of trace metals in atmospheric and lake ecosystem显示文摘The study of trace metals in the atmosphere and lake water is important due to their critical effects on humans, aquatic animals and the geochemical balance of ecosystems. The objective of this study was to investigate the concentration of trace metals in atmospheric and lake water samples during the rainy season(before and after precipitation)between November and December 2015. Typical methods of sample preparation for trace metal determination such as cloud point extraction, solid phase extraction and dispersive liquid–liquid micro-extraction are time-consuming and difficult to perform; therefore, there is a crucial need for development of more effective sample preparation procedure. A convection microwave assisted digestion procedure for extraction of trace metals was developed for use prior to inductively couple plasma-mass spectrometric determination. The result showed that metals like zinc(133.50–419.30 μg/m^3)and aluminum(53.58–378.93 μg/m^3)had higher concentrations in atmospheric samples as compared to lake samples before precipitation. On the other hand, the concentrations of zinc, aluminum, chromium and arsenic were significantly higher in lake samples after precipitation and lower in atmospheric samples. The relationship between physicochemical parameters(pH and turbidity)and heavy metal concentrations was investigated as well. Furthermore, enrichment factor analysis indicated that anthropogenic sources such as soil dust, biomass burning and fuel combustion influenced the metal concentrations in the atmosphere. | Manan Ahmed Ying Hui Chin Xinxin Guo Xing-Min Zhao | 2017 | Journal of Environmental Sciences2017,29,5: | 11
Bio-Adaption between Magnesium Alloy Stent and the Blood Vessel:A Review显示文摘Biodegradable magnesium(Mg) alloy stents are the most promising next generation of bio-absorbable stents. In this article, we summarized the progresses on the in vitro studies, animal testing and clinical trials of biodegradable Mg alloy stents in the past decades. These exciting findings led us to propose the importance of the concept 'bio-adaption' between the Mg alloy stent and the local tissue microenvironment after implantation. The healing responses of stented blood vessel can be generally described in three overlapping phases: inflammation, granulation and remodeling. The ideal bio-adaption of the Mg alloy stent, once implanted into the blood vessel, needs to be a reasonable function of the time and the space/dimension. First, a very slow degeneration of mechanical support is expected in the initial four months in order to provide sufficient mechanical support to the injured vessels. Although it is still arguable whether full mechanical support in stented lesions is mandatory during the first four months after implantation, it would certainly be a safety design parameter and a benchmark for regulatory evaluations based on the fact that there is insufficient human in vivo data available, especially the vessel wall mechanical properties during the healing/remodeling phase. Second, once the Mg alloy stent being degraded, the void space will be filled by the regenerated blood vessel tissues. The degradation of the Mg alloy stent should be 100% completed with no residues, and the degradation products(e.g., ions and hydrogen) will be helpful for the tissue reconstruction of the blood vessel. Toward this target, some future research perspectives are also discussed. | Jun Ma | 2016 | Journal of Materials Science & Technology2016,32,9: | 8

Broadband 200-nm second-harmonic generation in silicon in the telecom band显示文摘Silicon is well known for its strong third-order optical nonlinearity, exhibiting efficient supercontinuum and four-wave mixing processes.A strong second-order effect that is naturally inhibited in silicon can also be observed, for example,by electrically breaking the inversion symmetry and quasi-phase matching the pump and the signal. To generate an efficient broadband second-harmonic signal, however, the most promising technique requires matching the group velocities of the pump and the signal. In this work,we utilize dispersion engineering of a silicon waveguide to achieve group velocity matching between the pump and the signal, along with an additional degree of freedom to broaden the second harmonic through the strong third-order nonlinearity. We demonstrate that the strong self-phase modulation and cross-phase modulation in silicon help broaden the second harmonic by 200 nm in the O-band.Furthermore,we show a waveguide design that can be used to generate a second-harmonic signal in the entire nearinfrared region. Our work paves the way for various applications, such as efficient and broadband complementarymetal oxide semiconductor based on-chip frequency synthesizers, entangled photon pair generators, and optical parametric oscillators. | Neetesh Singh Manan Raval Alfonso Ruocco Michael R.Watts | 2020 | Light(Science & Applications)2020,9,1: | 2

Plasma Pulse Technology: An uprising EOR technique显示文摘Conventionally oil recovery factor is too low, which leaves great prospects for the application of enhanced oil recovery(EOR)methods to increase recovery factor.EOR methods are capital intensive and few are environmentally hazardous. So the paper discusses on the alternate enhanced oil recovery technique which has tremendous potential to curb the challenges of conventional EOR methods.Plasma pulse technology(PPT)aided EOR treatment is administered with an electric wireline conveyed plasma pulse generator tool that is run in the well and positioned alongside the perforations.Using energy stored in the generator's capacitors,a plasma arc is created that emits a tremendous amount of heat and pressure for a fraction of a second. This in turn creates a broad band of hydraulic impulse acoustic waves that are powerful enough to clean perforations and near wellbore damage. These waves continue to resonate deep into the reservoir, exciting the fluid molecules and increasing the reservoirs natural resonance to the degree that it can break larger hydrocarbon molecules to smaller one and simultaneously reducing adhesion tension which results in increased mobility of hydrocarbons. The plasma pulse technology has been successfully used on production as well as injection wells. It has been used often as a remedial procedure to increase well's productivity that has been on production for a period of time. This paper throws light on fundamentals of this advancing plasma pulse technology, contrasting it with recent EOR techniques.Effectiveness of treatment in increasing oil recovery,it's applicability to different reservoir types and results achieved so far are also covered in the paper. | Karan Patel Manan Shah Anirbid Sircar | 2018 | Petroleum Research2018,3,2: | 2
A comprehensive review of the application of nano-silica in oil well cementing显示文摘Oil and Gas Industry is a Multi-Billion Dollar Industry.Drilling a well is costly, right from exploration to drilling and production to Enhanced Oil Recovery(EOR).Nanotechnology has the potential to introduce revolutionary changes in several areas of the oil and gas industry, such as exploration, drilling, cementation, production,EOR,etc.Use of Nanotechnology in the cement slurry can also achieve solutions to some of the problems pertaining to oil well cementation.Nano-silica is a better alternative compared to conventional additives like calcium chloride and silica, because as compared to calcium chloride and silica, the amount of nano-silica to be added is very small.Nano-silica acts as a multi-functional additive.Upon addition of nano-silica to cement slurry, there is a decrease in the thickening time,an increase in the compressive strength, decrease in porosity and permeability within the cement and also a decrease in the fluid loss.Incorporation of nano-silica ensures proper cementation and greater integrity of the well.Nano-silica helps in decreasing the wait on cement(WOC)time and therefore reduces the overall capital cost.Nano-silica is highly recommended for deep offshore wells where high temperature and high pressure are often encountered. This paper discusses the behavior of Nano-silica at high temperatures and also reviews effects of Nano-silica on various properties of cement. | Akshar Thakkar Aakash Raval Shishir Chandra Manan Shah Anirbid Sircar | 2020 | Petroleum2020,6,2: | 2

Plant extract-loaded bacterial cellulose composite membrane for potential biomedical applications显示文摘Bacterial cellulose(BC)has been extensively explored as biomaterial for various biomedical applications owing to its non-toxic nature and unique structural morphology and impressive physicochemical and mechanical properties. However, its high production cost and lack of antimicrobial activity have restricted its large-scale production and therapeutic applications. Therefore, the current study is aimed to devise a strategy for low-cost BC production and develop its composite with bioactive materials to bless it with antimicrobial activity.Herein,5 mm thick reticulated fibrous and highly porous BC was produced by utilizing the wasted rotten tomatoes as the production medium. The produced bacterial cellulose waste(BCW)(i.e.,produced from wastes)was ex-situ modified with bioactive plant extract(PE)obtained from Euclea schimperi, and the bactericidal activity of the developed BCW/PE was evaluated against Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus and Gram-negative Escherichia coli through disc diffusion and colony forming unit(CFU)count methods. The BCW/PE composite showed high bactericidal activities against S.aureus and produced clear inhibition zone whereas negligible activity was observed against E.coli, indicating its bactericidal activity mainly against the Gram-positive bacterium.Overall, this study illustrates that there is a huge potential for developing valuable biomaterials from food wastes and utilizing their liquid holding capabilities for value-added applications in medical and pharmaceutical fields. | Atiya Fatima Sumayia Yasir MohdShariq Khan Sehrish Manan Muhammad Wajid Ullah Mazhar Ul-Islam | 2021 | Journal of Bioresources and Bioproducts2021,6,1: | 1
