1Artificial lights improve the catchability of snow crab (Chionoecetes opilio) traps显示文摘This study investigated the behaviour and commercial catchability of snow crab(Chionoecetes opilio)in response to different low-powered LED lights under laboratory and field conditions.We created a novel choice-experiment in a laboratory setting in which we investigated the behaviour of snow crab in response to coloured LED lights.The results showed that snow crab movement was dependent on light colour,with animals choosing to move toward blue and white lights,away from purple lights,and no detectable effect for green and red lights.We then conducted two field experiments to investigate the effect of the same LED lights on the catch rates of commercial traps during the 2016 snow crab fishery on the east coast of Newfoundland and Labrador.Results from the first field experiment showed that adding white and purple LED lights into baited traps significantly improved Catch Per Unit Effort(CPUE)by 77% and 47% respectively.Results from the second field experiment showed that unbaited traps equipped with only LED lights(no bait),could also catch snow crab in comparable amounts to traditional baited traps,with soak time and depth explaining some of the variation in CPUE.Taken together,these experiments suggest that fishing enterprises can improve their catching performance and profitability by adding LED lights to their traps,or by using LED lights as a bait replacement.Khanh Q.Nguyen Paul D.Winger Corey Morris Scott M.Grant 2017Aquaculture and Fisheries2017,2,3:5
2Neuroprotective and neuroregenerative potential of pharmacologically-induced hypothermia with D-alanine D-leucine enkephalin in brain injury显示文摘Neurovascular disorders, such as traumatic brain injury and stroke, persist as leading causes of death and disability – thus, the search for novel therapeutic approaches for these disorders continues. Many hurdles have hindered the translation of effective therapies for traumatic brain injury and stroke primarily because of the inherent complexity of neuropathologies and an inability of current treatment approaches to adapt to the unique cell death pathways that accompany the disorder symptoms. Indeed, developing potent treatments for brain injury that incorporate dynamic and multiple disorder-engaging therapeutic targets are likely to produce more effective outcomes than traditional drugs. The therapeutic use of hypothermia presents a promising option which may fit these criteria. While regulated temperature reduction has displayed great promise in preclinical studies of brain injury, clinical trials have been far less consistent and associated with adverse effects, especially when hypothermia is pursued via systemic cooling. Accordingly, devising better methods of inducing hypothermia may facilitate the entry of this treatment modality into the clinic. The use of the delta opioid peptide D-alanine D-leucine enkephalin(DADLE) to pharmacologically induce temperature reduction may offer a potent alternative, as DADLE displays both the ability to cause temperature reduction and to confer a broad profile of other neuroprotective and neuroregenerative processes. 11Tailoring the degradation rate of magnesium through biomedical nano-porous titanate coatings显示文摘A novel approach was developed to reduce the corrosion rate of magnesium(Mg)metal,utilising titanate coatings.Magnetron sputtering was used to deposit ca.500 nm titanium(Ti)coatings onto pure Mg discs,followed by hydrothermal conversion and ion exchange reactions to produce sodium and calcium titanate coatings.SEM confirmed the characteristic nanoporous structure of sodium and calcium titanate,with thicknesses ranging from ca.0.8 to 1.4μm.XPS analysis confirmed the presence of Ti^(4+)-O,Na-O,and Ca-O bonding,whilst Raman spectroscopy demonstrated characteristic vibrational modes(such as TiO 6 octahedral vibrations)of the sodium and calcium titanate perovskite structure.Furthermore,corrosion studies through potentiodynamic polarisation measurements demonstrated the NB/NH CaTC samples to be superior in reducing Mg degradation,compared to other samples tested,through an increase in E_(corr)from-1.49 to-1.33 V,and the reduction in corrosion current density,i corr,from 0.31 to 0.06 mA/cm^(2)for Mg and NB/NH CaTC samples,respectively.There was a clear trend noted for the NB/NH samples,which showed an increase in E corr to more positive values in the following order:MgMatthew D.Wadge Jamie McGuire Benjamin V.T.Hanby Reda M.Felfel Ifty Ahmed David M.Grant 2021Journal of Magnesium and Alloys2021,9,1:0
