1Artificial lights improve the catchability of snow crab (Chionoecetes opilio) traps显示文摘This study investigated the behaviour and commercial catchability of snow crab(Chionoecetes opilio)in response to different low-powered LED lights under laboratory and field conditions. We created a novel choice-experiment in a laboratory setting in which we investigated the behaviour of snow crab in response to coloured LED lights. The results showed that snow crab movement was dependent on light colour, with animals choosing to move toward blue and white lights, away from purple lights, and no detectable effect for green and red lights. We then conducted two field experiments to investigate the effect of the same LED lights on the catch rates of commercial traps during the 2016 snow crab fishery on the east coast of Newfoundland and Labrador. Results from the first field experiment showed that adding white and purple LED lights into baited traps significantly improved Catch Per Unit Effort(CPUE)by 77% and 47% respectively. Results from the second field experiment showed that unbaited traps equipped with only LED lights(no bait),could also catch snow crab in comparable amounts to traditional baited traps, with soak time and depth explaining some of the variation in CPUE.Taken together, these experiments suggest that fishing enterprises can improve their catching performance and profitability by adding LED lights to their traps,or by using LED lights as a bait replacement.Khanh Q.Nguyen Paul D.Winger Corey Morris Scott M.Grant 2017Aquaculture and Fisheries2017,2,3:5
2Smaller bar spacings in a Nordmøre grid reduces the bycatch of redfish(Sebastes spp.)in the offshore Northern shrimp(Pandalus borealis)fishery of eastern Canada显示文摘The offshore Northern shrimp(Pandalus borealis)bottom trawl fishery in eastern Canada currently uses 22 and 28 mm bar spacing Nordmøre grids to limit bycatch from using small mesh codends. However,a recent rebound of juvenile redfish(Sebastes spp.),that can pass through the grids, has greatly increased bycatch. To address this concern, this study investigated the effectiveness of 17 and 15 mm bar spacing Nordmøre grids in a twin-trawl(paired)configuration against the traditional 22 mm bar spacing grid.Size selectivity analyses showed that the 17 and 15 mm grids resulted in no significant reduction in shrimp catch across all length classes. The 17 mm grid significantly reduced redfish bycatch for all length classes and the 15 mm grid significantly reduced redfish bycatch for individuals larger than 95 mm total length.Less redfish entered the codend with the experimental grids, however, the overlap in width between redfish and Northern shrimp limits the overall sorting efficiency of the grids, leaving some redfish still vulnerable to capture.Tomas Araya-Schmidt Shannon M.Bayse Paul D.Winger Colin H.Frank 2023Aquaculture and Fisheries2023,8,6:0
3A comparison of hydrodynamic forces in knotted and knotless netting, using both helix and conventional ropes for midwater trawls显示文摘This study evaluated the hydrodynamic forces produced by whole panels of hand-made(geometrically different)rope meshes typically found in midwater trawls.Experimental treatments included both knotted and knotless meshes constructed of helix composite ropes, conventional braided nylon(PA)ropes, and twisted polyethylene(PE)ropes.Direct measurement of lift(L)and drag(D)forces were conducted using controlled flume tank experiments on panels oriented at 21°relative to the flow. For knotted netting, our results showed that the hydrodynamic forces(L and D)were statistically higher for helix ropes compared to conventional ropes of the same diameter. For knotless netting constructed of helix ropes, our primary finding is that the arrangement of helix ropes(S and Z lay)in individual meshes significantly affects the resulting D and Cd of whole netting panels.Arranging the mesh bars in the S-Z-S-Z lay pattern exhibited 29%and 32%lower drag(D)compared to S–S–S–S and S–S-Z-Z lay meshes, respectively. We also use computational fluid dynamics(CFD)to characterize the finescale flow-field around helix and conventional ropes. The resulting streamlines and pressure contours provide a functional explanation for the empirical measurements collected in the flume tank. These results can be useful in informing the design of midwater trawls.Gebremeskel Eshetu Kebede Paul D.Winger 2021Aquaculture and Fisheries2021,6,1:0
4A trap with light-emitting diode(LED)lights:Evaluating the effect of location and orientation of lights on the catch rate of snow crab(Chionoecetes opilio)显示文摘This study investigated the effect of installing underwater light-emitting diode(LED)lights in different locations(close and distant to the trap entrance)and orientations(normal and upside down direction)inside baited traps targeting snow crab(Chionoecetes opilio)off the coast of Newfoundland and Labrador,Canada.Four experimental treatments were evaluated in comparison with traditional baited traps(control). Our results showed each of the experimental treatments produced significantly higher(39%–57%;48%on average)catch per unit effort(CPUE)compared to the control traps, with no significant differences for both legal and sublegal-sized crab among the different experimental treatments.Longer soak times significantly increased the CPUE of the illuminated traps, but did not affect the catch rate of the control traps. Our results also indicated crab size frequency distributions were independent of experiment treatments. Our results suggest that fishing enterprises could improve their catching performance by adding LED lights to their traps, but the location and orientation of the lights appears unimportant.Khanh Q.Nguyen Paul D.Winger 2019Aquaculture and Fisheries2019,4,6:0
