| 3 | Effects of the plenum chamber volume and distributor geometry on fluidized bed hydrodynamics显示文摘Most hydrodynamic fluidized bed models,including CFD codes,neglect any effects of the plenum chamber volume.Experiments were performed in a 0.13 m ID fluidization column to determine plenum chamber volume effects on fluidized bed hydrodynamics for FCC and glass particles.Two low-pressure-drop distributors were used,one with a single orifice,and the other with 33 orifices and the same total open area as the single orifice.The results show two peaks in the frequency spectra for the single-orifice distributor,one representing bubble eruption at the bed surface and the other of higher frequency corresponding to the bubbling frequency at the distributor.The latter decreased slightly with increasing plenum volume and with increasing bed depth.For the multi-orifice distributor,broad frequency spectra from pressure measurements became narrower and moved towards higher frequency with decreasing plenum volume. | Kiarash Vakhshouri John R. | 4 | Skin biomechanics:a potential therapeutic intervention target to reduce scarring显示文摘Pathological scarring imposes a major clinical and social burden worldwide.Human cutaneous wounds are responsive to mechanical forces and convert mechanical cues to biochemical signals that eventually promote scarring.To understand the mechanotransduction pathways in cutaneous scarring and develop new mechanotherapy approaches to achieve optimal scarring,the current study highlights the mechanical behavior of unwounded and scarred skin as well as intra-and extracellular mechanisms behind keloid and hypertrophic scars.Additionally,the therapeutic interventions that promote optimal scar healing by mechanical means at the molecular,cellular or tissue level are extensively reviewed.The current literature highlights the significant role of fibroblasts in wound contraction and scar formation via differentiation intomyofibroblasts.Thus,understanding myofibroblasts and their responses to mechanical loading allows the development of new scar therapeutics.A review of the current clinical and preclinical studies suggests that existing treatment strategies only reduce scarring on a small scale after wound closure and result in poor functional and aesthetic outcomes.Therefore,the perspective of mechanotherapies needs to consider the application of both mechanical forces and biochemical cues to achieve optimal scarring.Moreover,early intervention is critical in wound management;thus,mechanoregulation should be conducted during the healing process to avoid scar maturation.Future studies should either consider combining mechanical loading(pressure)therapies with tension offloading approaches for scar management or developing more effective early therapies based on contraction-blocking biomaterials for the prevention of pathological scarring. | Motaharesadat Hosseini Jason Brown Kiarash Khosrotehrani Ardeshir Bayat Abbas Shafiee | 2022 | Burns & Trauma2022,10,1: | 3 |
| 5 | Calibration of coupled hydro-mechanical properties of grain-based model for simulating fracture process and associated pore pressure evolution in excavation damage zone around deep tunnels显示文摘The objective of this paper is to develop a methodology for calibration of a discrete element grain-based model(GBM)to replicate the hydro-mechanical properties of a brittle rock measured in the laboratory,and to apply the calibrated model to simulating the formation of excavation damage zone(EDZ)around underground excavations.Firstly,a new cohesive crack model is implemented into the universal distinct element code(UDEC)to control the fracturing behaviour of materials under various loading modes.Next,a methodology for calibration of the components of the UDEC-Voronoi model is discussed.The role of connectivity of induced microcracks on increasing the permeability of laboratory-scale samples is investigated.The calibrated samples are used to investigate the influence of pore fluid pressure on weakening the drained strength of the laboratory-scale rock.The validity of the Terzaghi’s effective stress law for the drained peak strength of low-porosity rock is tested by performing a series of biaxial compression test simulations.Finally,the evolution of damage and pore pressure around two unsupported circular tunnels in crystalline granitic rock is studied. | Kiarash Farahmand Mark S.Diederichs | 2021 | Journal of Rock Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering2021,13,1: | 2 |

| 13 | Isolation and molecular identification of cellulolytic bacteria from Dig Rostam hot spring and study of their cellulase activity显示文摘Cellulose is the main structural component of lignocellulosic wastes that can be converted to sugars and biofuels by cellulase.Due to wide applications of this enzyme in various industries around the world,cellulase is considered as the third industrial enzyme.The ability of thermophilic bacteria in the production of heat-stable cellulases has made them valuable tools in biotechnology.The aim of this study was isolation and molecular identification of cellulolytic thermophile bacteria from Dig Rostam hot spring and investigating their cellulase activity.Samples were taken from water and sediments of this hot spring,and cellulolytic bacteria were enriched in media containing cellulose as the only carbon source.The bacteria were incubated at 60℃,and single colonies were then isolated on solid media.Congo red assay was used as a quick test for the qualitative screening of cellulase activity.According to these qualitative results,four colonies named CDB1,CDB2,CDB3,and CDB4 were isolated,and their growth curve and some other characteristics were determined by biochemical assays.Moreover,endoglucanase,exoglucanase,and FPase activities of the isolates were investigated quantitatively.Results indicated that CDB1 exhibited the highest endoglucanase(0.096 U/mL)and exoglucanase(0.156 U/mL)activities among other isolates.16S rDNA partial sequencing indicated that CDB1 had 99%similarity to the genus Anoxybacillus,and the other isolates showed the highest similarity to the genus Geobacillus.The cellulase gene of CDB1 isolate with the highest cellulase activity was also cloned,and its sequence is reported for the first time.Further studies on this thermophilic enzyme might be useful for industrial applications. | Sareh HAJIABADI Mansour MASHREGHI Ahmad Reza BAHRAMI Kiarash GHAZVINI Maryam M.MATIN | 2020 | BIOCELL2020,44,1: | 1 |

| 19 | Empirical modeling of dopability in diamond-like semiconductors显示文摘Carrier concentration optimization has been an enduring challenge when developing newly discovered semiconductors for applications(e.g.,thermoelectrics,transparent conductors,photovoltaics).This barrier has been particularly pernicious in the realm of high-throughput property prediction,where the carrier concentration is often assumed to be a free parameter and the limits are not predicted due to the high computational cost.In this work,we explore the application of machine learning for high-throughput carrier concentration range prediction.Bounding the model within diamond-like semiconductors,the learning set was developed from experimental carrier concentration data on 127 compounds ranging from unary to quaternary.The data were analyzed using various statistical and machine learning methods.Accurate predictions of carrier concentration ranges in diamond-like semiconductors are made within approximately one order of magnitude on average across both p-and n-type dopability.The model fit to empirical data is analyzed to understand what drives trends in carrier concentration and compared with previous computational efforts.Finally,dopability predictions from this model are combined with high-throughput quality factor predictions to identify promising thermoelectric materials. | Samuel A.Miller Maxwell Dylla Shashwat Anand Kiarash G.ordiz G.Jeffrey Snyder Eric S.Toberer | 2018 | npj Computational Materials2018,,1: | 1 |
