| 1 | Hepatic steatosis is associated with an increased risk of carotid atherosclerosis显示文摘AIM: Although an association between helatic steatosis and vascular risk factors has been described, direct relationships between fatty liver and atherosclerosis have not yet been investigated. The aim of the present study has been to investigate those relationships.METHODS: The Study of Health in Pomerania examined a random population sample aged between 20 and 79 years.A study population of 4 222 subjects without hepatitis B and C infections and without liver cirrhosis was available for the present analysis. Hepatic steatosis was defined sonographically and intima-media thickness (IMT) as well as plaque prevalence were estimated by carotid ultrasound.RESULTS: The prevalence rate of hepatic steatosis was 29.9%. Among subjects aged ≥45 years, an association between hepatic steatosis and IMT of the carotid arteries was found in bivariate analysis, but not after adjustment for atherosclerotic risk factors. Individuals with fatty liver had more often carotid plaques than persons without fatty liver (plaque prevalence rate 76.8% vs 66.6%; P<0.001).This association persisted after adjustment for confounding factors and was predominantly present in subjects with no to mild alcohol consumption.CONCLUSION: There is an independent association between hepatic steatosis and carotid atherosclerotic plaques. | 2 | Tree diversity and nectar composition affect arthropod visitors on extrafloral nectaries in a diversity experiment显示文摘Aims Plants with extrafloral nectaries(EFNs)are common in tropical and subtropical habitats and,despite many other arthropods also forage for EFN,most studies solely focused on the defense mutualisms between EFN plants and ants.This study aims at a quantitative assessment of the entire arthropod community that visits EFN trees to compare visitor communities between different tree species to disentangle the mechanisms that may drive EFN visitor community composition.We also test for tree diversity effects on EFN visitors,as it is unknown if local tree species richness relates to the abundance and species richness of arthropods foraging for EFN.Methods We sampled EFN-visiting arthropods in the experimental tree species richness gradient of the BEF-China Experiment,the currently largest forest diversity experiment in the world,and tested if tree species richness affects EFN visitors and if visitor community composition differs between EFN tree species.In a second step,we analyzed the EFN of Ailanthus altissima and Triadica cochinchinensis,the two EFN tree species with highest visitor abundance,for sugars and amino acids(AA)to test if tree species-specific differences in nectar chemistry translate to differing visitor communities.Lastly,we conducted a choice experiment using different artificial nectar solutions to test if nectar quality affects foraging decisions of ants,the most frequent EFN visitors in our study sites.Important Findings EFN trees in young successional forests in subtropical South-East China are visited by a diverse assemblage of arthropods including ants,beetles,flies,and spiders.Albeit ants accounted for about 75%of all individuals,non-ant visitors were by far more species rich.Visitor abundance and species richness declined with increasing tree species richness,suggesting a resource dilution effect,because plots with more tree species had proportionally less EFN tree individuals and thus lower nectar availability.Ailanthus altissima and T.cochinchinensis were visited by different arthropods and their nectar had species-specific AA composition and sugar concentration,indicating that differences in visitors may,at least partly,be explained by differences in nectar chemistry.These findings are supported by the choice experiment,in which artificial nectars containing sugar solutions supplemented with essential AAs attracted more ants than pure sugar solutions or sugar solutions supplemented with non-essential AAs.Our results improve the understanding of the complex ecology of EFN trees,a plant life form that might be crucial for understanding how tree diversity influences patterns of tree growth in young successional tropical and subtropical forests. | Michael Staab Joel Methorst Jan Peters Nico Blüthgen Alexandra-Maria Klein | 2017 | Journal of Plant Ecology2017,10,1: | 6 |
| 3 | Retroperitoneal laparoscopic nondismembered pyeloplasty for uretero-pelvic junction obstruction due to crossing vessels: A matched-paired analysis and review of literature显示文摘Objective:To compare laparoscopic Anderson-Hynes pyeloplasty(LAHP)and retroperitoneal laparoscopic YV-pyeloplasty(LRYVP)in ureteropelvic junction obstruction(UPJ)in presence of a crossing vessels(CV).Methods:Our database showed 380 UPJO-cases,who underwent laparoscopic retroperitoneal surgery during the last 2 decades including 206 non-dismembered LRYVP,157 dismembered pyeloplasties LAHP,and 17 cases of laparoscopic ureterolysis.Among them 198 cases were suitable for a matched-pair(2:1)analysis comparing laparoscopic retroperitoneal non-dismembered LRYVP(Group 1,n Z 131)and dismembered LAHP(Group 2,n Z 67)in presence of a crossing vessel.Patients were matched according to age,gender,kidney functions,and obstruction grade.Complications were graded according to modified Clavien-classification.Results:Comparative data were similar between both groups(LRYVP vs.LAHP)including mean operating time(112 min vs.114 min),complication rates(4.2%vs.7.3%)mainly Grade 1e2 according to Clavien classification,and success rates(90%vs.89%).These results reflected in the reviewed literature indicate that LRYVP provides the advantage of minimal dissection in case of CV with similar outcome.However,redundant pelvis and anteriorly crossing vessels still require a dismembered pyeloplasty LAHP.Conclusion:LRYVP has achieved similar results compared with the previous golden standard of open surgery,especially in case of crossing vessels apart from presence of a redundant pelvis or anteriorly crossing vessel.This can be further improved when using the small access retroperitoneoscopic technique respectively mini-laparoscopy. | Jens Rassweiler Jan Klein Ali Serdar Goezen | 2018 | Asian Journal of Urology2018,5,3: | 5 |

| 5 | Epigenetic and non-epigenetic mode of SIRT1 action during oocyte meiosis progression显示文摘Background: SIRT1 histone deacetylase acts on many epigenetic and non-epigenetic targets. It is thought that SIRT1 is involved in oocyte maturation;therefore, the importance of the ooplasmic SIRT1 pool for the further fate of mature oocytes has been strongly suggested. We hypothesised that SIRT1 plays the role of a signalling molecule in mature oocytes through selected epigenetic and non-epigenetic regulation.Results: We observed SIRT1 re-localisation in mature oocytes and its association with spindle microtubules.In mature oocytes, SIRT1 distribution shows a spindle-like pattern, and spindle-specific SIRT1 action decreasesα-tubulin acetylation. Based on the observation of the histone code in immature and mature oocytes, we suggest that SIRT1 is mostly predestined for an epigenetic mode of action in the germinal vesicles(GVs) of immature oocytes.
