| 1 | Edible Bird's Nest Attenuates Menopause-Related Bone Degeneration in Rats via Increasing Bone Estrogen-Receptor Expression显示文摘Objective:To investigate the mechanistic basis for the attenuation of bone degeneration by edible bird's nest(EBN)in ovariectomized rats.Methods:Forty-two female Sprage-Dawley rats were randomized into 7 groups(6 in each group).The ovariectomized(OVX)and OVX+6%,3%,and 1.5%EBN and OVX+estrogen groups were given standard rat chow alone,standard rat chow+6%,3%,and 1.5%EBN,or standard rat chow+estrogen therapy(0.2mg/kg per day),respectively.The sham-operation group was surgically opened without removing the ovaries.The control group did not have any surgical intervention.After 12 weeks of intervention,blood samples were taken for serum estrogen,osteocalcin,and osteoprotegerin,as well as the measurement of magnesium,calcium abd zinc concentrations.While femurs were removed from the surrounding muscles to measure bone mass density using the X-ray edge detection technique,then collected for histology and estrogen receptor(ER)immunohistochemistry.Results:Ovariectomy altered serum estrogen levels resulting in increased food intake and weight gain,while estrogen and EBN supplementation attenuated these changes.Ovariectomy also reduced bone ER expression and density,and the production of osteopcalcin and osteorotegerin,which are important pro-osteoplastic hormones that promote bone mineraliztion and density.Conversely,estrogen and EBN increased serum estrogen levels leading to increased bone ER expression,pro-osteoplastic hormone production and bone density(all P<0.05).Conclusion:EBN could be used as a safe alternative to hormone replacement therapys for managing menopausal complications like bone degeneration. | HOU Zhi-ping TANG Shi-ying Jl Hai-ru HE Pei-yuan LI Yu-hong DONG Xian-ling DU Meng-nan Ismail Maznah HE Wen-jing | 2021 | Chinese Journal of Integrative Medicine2021,27,4: | 6 |
| 2 | Efficient solvent extraction of antioxidant-rich extract from a tropical diatom,Chaetoceros calcitrans (Paulsen) Takano 1968显示文摘Objective: To compare the in vitro antioxidant capacity of a diatom, Chaetoceros calcitrans(C. calcitrans) extracted using six types of solvents.Methods: Each extract was evaluated in terms of extraction yield, total carotenoid,fucoxanthin content, total phenolic and antioxidant capacities(DPPH and ABTS +scavenging activity and iron chelating activity).Results: The methanol extract exhibited the highest yield [(22.71 ± 0.96) g/100 g dry weight(DW)], total carotenoid [(4.46 ± 0.36) mg/g DW], total phenolic [(2.49 ± 0.08) mg gallic acid equivalents/g DW] and second highest fucoxanthin content [(2.08 ± 0.03) mg fucoxanthin/g DW] as compared to other solvent extracts. Methanolic extract also exhibited significantly higher(P < 0.05) scavenging(DPPH, ABTS +) and iron chelating activities.Conclusions: Methanol was the recommended solvent for the production of antioxidant rich extract from C. calcitrans. Both carotenoids and phenolic acids were found to be positively correlated to the antioxidant capacities of C. calcitrans. | 15 | The Spatial Structure of Zooplankton Communities of Pedu Reservoir,Malaysia显示文摘A total of 22 species of zooplankton were identified from 8 sampling stations located in the limnetic zone of Pedu reservoir.The zooplankton community was dominated by rotifers (11 species),followed by cladocerans (9 species) and copepods (2 species).Four species of zooplankton comprised of 3 rotifers,Brachionus quadridentata,Brachionus caudatus and Keratella cochlearis and one cladoceran,Ceriodaphnia cornuta were present at all sampling stations.Species richness was highest at Station 2 (17 species) followed by Station 4 and Station 8 (14 species),Station 5 (15 species),Station 7 (11 species),Station 6 (10 species),Station 3 (9 species) and Station 1 (7 species).With an exception of water transparency,all other water quality parameters such as temperature,dissolved oxygen,conductivity,pH and total dissolved solids were not significant when compared between sampling stations.The study found that station 5 which was located in a calm strait,protected from strong wave and wind was a suitable area for zooplankton growth and establishment.Factors supporting the findings included highest water transparency (3.4 m),rich in species numbers (15 species),high diversity index (0.950) and evenness index (0.808). | Amir Shah Ruddin Md Shah Johan Ismail Diana Latief Wan Maznah Wan Omar | 2012 | 湿地科学2012,10,4: | 0 |
| 16 | WATER QUALITY STUDIES IN MALAYSIAN DISUSED MAN MADE LAKES FOR SUITABILITY OF AN AQUACULTURE PROJECT显示文摘A study has been conducted on the status of water quality in two disused man made lakes, which have potential for cage aquaculture project. This study highlights the quality of water analyzed with reference to various physical-chemical parameters in two selected lakes and their suitability for fish farming. A number of parameters were measured including the amount of NH_ 3 -N, NO_ 3 -N, NO_ 2 -N and total phosphorus while in-situ measurement including DO, pH, temperature, conductivity, TDS and Secchi disk visibility. Beside the physical-chemical of water, the location, morphometry and climate conditions were also investigated. The chemical data analyzed for six months indicated that Lake A and Lake B are characterized by relatively high DO, slightly neutral pH and low TSS. The concentration of NH_ 3 -N and NO_ 2 -N was very low (0.058 mg/L and 0.04 mg/L, respectively) and total phosphorus was usually in low concentration and sometimes would seem negligible. Besides, NO_ 3 -N occurred in slightly higher concentration ( 1.75 mg/L ).
