1Comparison of quartz sand, anthracite, shale and biological ceramsite for adsorptive removal of phosphorus from aqueous solution显示文摘The choice of substrates with high phosphorus adsorption capacity is vital for sustainable phosphorus removal from waste water in constructed wetlands. In this study, four substrates were used: quartz sand, anthracite, shale and biological ceramsite. These substrate samples were characterized by Xray diffractometry and scanning electron microscopy studies for their mineral components(chemical components) and surface characteristics. The dynamic experimental results revealed the following ranking order for total phosphorus(TP) removal efficiency: anthracite > biological ceramsite > shale > quartz sand. The adsorptive removal capacities for TP using anthracite, biological ceramsite, shale and quartz sand were 85.87, 81.44, 59.65, and 55.98 mg/kg, respectively. Phosphorus desorption was also studied to analyze the substrates' adsorption efficiency in wastewater treatment as well as the substrates' ability to be reused for treatment. It was noted that the removal performance for the different forms of phosphorus was dependent on the nature of the substrate and the adsorption mechanism. A comparative analysis showed that the removal of particulate phosphorus was much easier using shale. Whereas anthracite had the highest soluble reactive phosphorus(SRP) adsorptive capacity, biological ceramsite had the highest dissolved organic phosphorus(DOP) removal capacity. Phosphorus removal by shale and biological ceramsite was mainly through chemical adsorption, precipitation or biological adsorption. 2Combining computer vision and deep learning to enable ultra-scale aerial phenotyping and precision agriculture:A case study of lettuce production显示文摘Aerial imagery is regularly used by crop researchers,growers and farmers to monitor crops during the growing season.To extract meaningful information from large-scale aerial images collected from the field,high-throughput phenotypic analysis solutions are required,which not only produce high-quality measures of key crop traits,but also support professionals to make prompt and reliable crop management decisions.Here,we report AirSurf,an automated and open-source analytic platform that combines modern computer vision,up-to-date machine learning,and modular software engineering in order to measure yield-related phenotypes from ultra-large aerial imagery.To quantify millions of in-field lettuces acquired by fixed-wing light aircrafts equipped with normalised difference vegetation index(NDVI)sensors,we customised AirSurf by combining computer vision algorithms and a deep-learning classifier trained with over 100,000 labelled lettuce signals.The tailored platform,AirSurf-Lettuce,is capable of scoring and categorising iceberg lettuces with high accuracy(>98%).Furthermore,novel analysis functions have been developed to map lettuce size distribution across the field,based on which associated global positioning system(GPS)tagged harvest regions have been identified to enable growers and farmers to conduct precision agricultural practises in order to improve the actual yield as well as crop marketability before the harvest.Alan Bauer Aaron George Bostrom Joshua Ball Christopher Applegate Tao Cheng Stephen Laycock Sergio Moreno Rojas Jacob Kirwan Ji Zhou 2019Horticulture Research2019,6,1:14
3Isolated Cases of Plague--Inner Mongolia-Beijing, 2019显示文摘What is already known about this topic?Plague is an acute infectious disease caused by Yersinia pestis(Y.pestis)and is primarily transmitted by rodents.Human can be infected by bites of bacterium-bearing fleas or direct contact with diseased or dead plagueinfected animals.In 2004,the last human plague case was reported in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region due to skinning a dead hare.What is added by this report?This is the first case of pneumonic plague imported into a major city since the founding of the People's Republic of China.Two primary pneumonic plague cases(Patients A and B)found in residents of Inner Mongolia were confirmed in Beijing on November 12,2019.Another case(Patient C)of Y.pestis was identified as bubonic plague on November 14.Patient A most likely became infected from aerosol exposure to infective droplets while digging on his farm,located in an Meriones unguiculatus(M.unguiculatus)natural plague focus.Patient B became infected from contact with Patient A(her husband).Patient C became infected after skinning a dead hare.There was no epidemiological relationship between the Patient A/B and Patient C.What are the implications for public health practice?When epizootic plague is detected,local health-care providers and the public should be alerted about any possible risks.Public education efforts should focus on promoting personal protection measures.Yumeng Wang Lei Zhou Mengguang Fan Quanyi Wang Jianyun Li Qun Li Zijian Feng George FGao Cheng Xu Lijuan Chen Wei Li Yanping Zhang 2019China CDC weekly2019,1,1:13
4A dimeric structure of PD-L1: functional units or evolutionary relics?显示文摘PD-L1 is a member of the B7 protein family,most of whose members so far were identified as dimers in a solution and crystalline state,either complexed or uncomplexed with their ligand(s).The binding of PD-L1 with its receptor PD-1(CD279)delivers an inhibitory signal regulating the T cell function.Simultaneously with the Garboczi group,we successfully solved another structure of human PD-L1(hPD-L1).Our protein crystallized in the space group of C222_(1) with two hPD-L1 molecules per asymmetric unit.After comparison of reported B7 structures,we have found some intrinsic factors involved in the interaction of these two molecules.Based on these results,we tend to believe this uncomplexed hPD-L1 structure demonstrated its potential dimeric state in solution,althougt it could just be an evolutionary relic,too weak to be detected under present technology,or still a functional unit deserved our attentions.Yong Chen Peipei Liu Feng Gao Hao Cheng Jianxun Qi George F.Gao 2010Protein & Cell2010,1,2:10

7Human Ebola virus infection in West Africa: a review of available therapeutic agents that target different steps of the life cycle of Ebola virus显示文摘The recent outbreak of the human Zaire ebolavirus(EBOV)epidemic is spiraling out of control in West Africa.Human EBOV hemorrhagic fever has a case fatality rate of up to 90%.The EBOV is classified as a biosafety level 4 pathogen and is considered a category A agent of bioterrorism by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention,with no approved therapies and vaccines available for its treatment apart from supportive care.Although several promising therapeutic agents and vaccines against EBOV are undergoing the Phase I human trial,the current epidemic might be outpacing the speed at which drugs and vaccines can be produced.Like all viruses,the EBOV largely relies on host cell factors and physiological processes for its entry,replication,and egress.We have reviewed currently available therapeutic agents that have been shown to be effective in suppressing the proliferation of the EBOV in cell cultures or animal studies.Most of the therapeutic agents in this review are directed against non-mutable targets of the host,which is independent of viral mutation.These medications are approved by the Food and Drug Administration(FDA)for the treatment of other diseases.They are available and stockpileable for immediate use.They may also have a complementary role to those therapeutic agents under development that are directed against the mutable targets of the EBOV.Kang Yiu Lai Wing Yiu George Ng Fan Fanny Cheng 2014Infectious Diseases of Poverty2014,3,1:4
8LIN28 coordinately promotes nucleolar/ribosomal functions and represses the 2C-like transcriptional program in pluripotent stem cells显示文摘LIN28 is an RNA binding protein with important roles in early embryo development,stem cell differentiation/re-programming,tumorigenesis and metabolism.Previous studies have focused mainly on its role in the cytosol where it interacts with Let-7 microRNA precursors or mRNAs,and few have addressed LIN28's role within the nucleus.Here,we show that LIN28 displays dynamic temporal and spatial expression during murine embryo development.Maternal LIN28 expression drops upon exit from the 2-cell stage,and zygotic LIN28 protein is induced at the forming nucleolus during 4-cell to blas-tocyst stage development,to become dominantly expressed in the cytosol after implantation.In cultured pluripotent stem cells(PSCs),loss of LIN28 led to nucleolar stress and activation of a 2-cell/4-cell-like transcriptional program characterized by the expression of endogenous retrovirus genes.Mechanistically,LIN28 binds to small nucleolar RNAs and rRNA to maintain nucleolar integrity,and its loss leads to nucleolar phase separation defects,ribosomal stress and activation of P53 which in turn binds to and activates 2C transcription factor Dux.LIN28 also resides in a complex containing the nucleolar factor Nucleolin(NCL)and the transcrip-tional repressor TRIM28,and LIN28 loss leads to reduced occupancy of the NCL/TRIM28 complex on the Dux and rDNA loci,and thus de-repressed Dux and reduced rRNA expression.Lin28 knockout cells with nucleolar stress are more likely to assume a slowly cycling,translationally inert and anabolically inactive state,which is a part of previously unappreciated 2C-like transcriptional program.These findings elucidate novel roles for nucleolar LIN28 in PSCs,and a new mechanism linking 2C program and nucleolar functions in PSCs and early embryo development.Zhen Sun Hua Yu Jing Zhao Tianyu Tan Hongru Pan Yuqing Zhu Lang Chen Cheng Zhang Li Zhang Anhua Lei Yuyan Xu Xianju Bi Xin Huang Bo Gao Longfei Wang Cristina Correia Ming Chen Qiming Sun Yu Feng Li Shen Hao Wu Jianlong Wang Xiaohua Shen George Q.Daley Hu Li Jin Zhang 2022Protein & Cell2022,13,7:4
9Genomic characterizations of H4 subtype avian influenza viruses from live poultry markets in Sichuan province of China, 2014–2015显示文摘Dear Editor,Avian influenza viruses (AIVs) have posed a serious threat to poultry production and public health. To date, more than fourteen AIV subtypes that are able to infect human beings have been documented. Also, it is suggested that new subtypes may be reported in the future, owing to the migration of wild birds and live poultry transportation (Gao, 2018).Poultry may act as a potential incubator for novel subtypes of avian influenza virus (Bi et al., 2016a; Bi et al., 2016b; Liu et al., 2014a; Su et al., 2017). 11Epidemiological Characteristics of Notifiable Infectious Diseases among Foreign Cases in China,2004–2017显示文摘Objective We aimed to assess the features of notifiable infectious diseases found commonly in foreign nationals in China between 2004 and 2017 to improve public health policy and responses for infectious diseases.Methods We performed a descriptive study of notifiable infectious diseases among foreigners reported from 2004 to 2017 in China using data from the Chinese National Notifiable Infectious Disease Reporting System(NNIDRIS). Demographic, temporal-spatial distribution were described and analyzed.Results A total of 67,939 cases of 33 different infectious diseases were reported among foreigners.These diseases were seen in 31 provinces of China and originated from 146 countries of the world. The infectious diseases with the highest incidence number were human immunodeficiency virus(HIV) of18,713 cases, hepatitis B(6,461 cases), hand, foot, and mouth disease(6,327 cases). Yunnan province had the highest number of notifiable infectious diseases in foreigners. There were different trends of the major infectious diseases among foreign cases seen in China and varied among provinces.Conclusions This is the first description of the epidemiological characteristic of notifiable infectious diseases among foreigners in China from 2004 to 2017.
