1Status monitoring and health assessment of Luhuitou fringing reef of Sanya, Hainan, China显示文摘The monitoring survey and health assessment for benthic community were carried out in Luhuitou fringing reef of Sanya, Hainan, China in 2002. Monitoring survey included manta tow, line intercept transect, video transect and digital photograph. The mean live coral cover was 23.40%. Comparison of used monitoring methods showed that video transect can replace line intercept transect, and 50 m transect is better than 20 m transect in uneven coral region. Survey data and comparison with previous research work showed that Luhuitou fringing reef has been damaged severely and has a general declining trend with live coral cover from about 85% in the 1960s down to 20% in 2004, but it still has quite high biodiversity and therefore has special protection value. Main factors of Luhuitou fringing reef declining were human activities including reef rock digging and curios collecting, destructive fishing, sediment and pollutant from coastal land, and recent marine aquaculture. 2Environmental and Psycho-social Factors Related to Prostate Cancer Risk in the Chinese Population:a Case-control Study显示文摘Objective To study the risk environmental and psycho-social factors associated to prostate cancer(PCa) in Chinese population. Methods 250 PCa patients and 500 controls were enrolled in this case-control study. Information was collected and logistic regression analysis was used to estimate the odds ratios(OR) and 95% confidence intervals(95% CI) for relationship between lifestyle, eating habits and psycho-social factors with PCa risk. Results Green vegetables and green tea were associated with a decreased risk of PCa(OR=0.39, 95% CI: 0.28-0.53; OR=0.59, 95% CI: 0.40-0.87, respectively). Family history of PCa(OR=7.16, 95% CI: 2.01-25.49), history of prostate diseases(OR=2.28, 95% CI: 1.53-3.41), alcohol consumption(OR=1.97, 95% CI: 1.33-2.90), red meat consumption(OR=1.74, 95% CI: 1.20-2.52), barbecued(OR=2.29, 95% CI: 1.11-4.73) or fried(OR=2.35, 95% CI: 1.24-4.43) foods were related with increased PCa risk. Negative psycho-social factors including occupational setbacks(OR=1.61, 95% CI: 1.00-2.59), marital separation(OR=1.94, 95% CI: 1.29-2.91), self-contained suffering(OR=2.37, 95% CI: 1.58-3.55), and high sensitivity to the personal comments(OR=1.73, 95% CI: 1.18-2.54) were related to PCa. Conclusion Regular consumption of green vegetables and green tea may suggest protective effects on PCa. Alcohol consumption, red meat consumption and barbecued or fried foods were associated with PCa. 3Integrative taxonomy of the Russet Bush Warbler Locustella mandelli complex reveals a new species from central China显示文摘Background: The Russet Bush Warbler Locustella(previously Bradypterus) mandelli complex occurs in mountains in the eastern Himalayas, southern China, Vietnam, the Philippines, and Indonesia. The taxonomy has been debated,with one(L. seebohmi) to four(L. seebohmi, L. mandelli, L. montis and L. timorensis) species having been recognised.Methods: We used an integrative approach, incorporating analyses of morphology, vocalizations and a molecular marker, to re-evaluate species limits in the L. mandelli complex.Results: We found that central Chinese L. mandelli differed from those from India through northern Southeast Asia to southeast China in plumage, morphometrics and song. All were easily classified by song, and(wing + culmen)/tail ratio overlapped only marginally. Both groups were reciprocally monophyletic in a mitochondrial cytochrome b(cytb) gene tree, with a mean divergence of 1.0 ± 0.2%. They were sympatric and mostly altitudinally segregated in the breeding season in southern Sichuan province. We found that the Mt Victoria(western Myanmar) population differed vocally from other L. mandelli, but no specimens are available. Taiwan Bush Warbler L. alishanensis was sister to the L. mandelli complex, with the most divergent song. Plumage, vocal and cytb evidence supported the distinctness of the south Vietnamese L. mandelli idonea. The Timor Bush Warbler L. timorensis, Javan Bush Warbler L.montis and Benguet Bush Warbler L. seebohmi differed distinctly in plumage, but among-population song variation in L. montis exceeded the differences between some populations of these taxa, and mean pairwise cytb divergences were only 0.5–0.9%. We also found that some L. montis populations differed morphologically.Conclusions: We conclude that the central Chinese population of Russet Bush Warbler represents a new species,which we describe herein, breeding at mid elevations in Sichuan, Shaanxi, Hubei, Hunan and Guizhou provinces.The taxonomic status of the other allopatric populations is less clear. However, as they differ to a degree comparable with that of the sympatric L. mandelli and the new species, we elevate L. idonea to species status, and retain L. seebohmi and L. montis as separate species, the latter with timorensis as a subspecies. 4Novel role of STAT3 in microglia-dependent neuroinflammation after experimental subarachnoid haemorrhage显示文摘Background and purpose Signal transducer and activator of transcription 3(STAT3)may contribute to the proinflammation in the central nervous system diseases by modulating the microglial responses.Thus,this study was intended to investigate the effect of STAT3 on microglia-dependent neuroinflammation and functional outcome after experimental subarachnoid haemorrhage(SAH).Methods The SAH model was established by endovascular perforation in the mouse.Real-time PCR(RtPCR)and western blot were used to examine the dynamic STAT3 signalling pathway responses after SAH.To clarify the role of the STAT3 signalling pathway in the microglia-dependent neuroinflammation after SAH,the microglia-specific STAT3 knockout(KO)mice were generated by the Cre-LoxP system.The neurological functions were assessed by Catwalk and Morris water maze tests.Neuronal loss after SAH was determined by immunohistochemistry staining.Microglial polarisation status after STAT3 KO was then examined by RtPCR and immunofluorescence.Results The STAT3 and Janus kinase-signal transducer 2 activated immediately with the upregulation and phosphorylation after SAH.Downstream factors and related mediators altered dynamically and accordingly.Microglial STAT3 deletion ameliorated the neurological impairment and alleviated the early neuronal loss after SAH.To investigate the underlying mechanism,we examined the microglial reaction after STAT3 KO.STAT3 deletion reversed the increase of microglia after SAH.Loss of STAT3 triggered the early morphological changes of microglia and primed microglia from M1 to M2 polarisation.Functionally,microglial STAT3 deletion suppressed the SAH-induced proinflammation and promoted the anti-inflammation in the early phase.Conclusions STAT3 is closely related to the microglial polarisation transition and modulation of microglia-dependent neuroinflammation.Microglial STAT3 deletion improved neurological function and neuronal survival probably through promoting M2 polarisation and anti-inflammatory responses after SAH.STAT3 may serve as a promising therapeutic target to alleviate early brain injury after SAH.Zhiyuan Vera Zheng Junfan Chen Hao Lyu Sin Yu Erica Lam Gang Lu Wai Yee Chan George K C Wong 2022Stroke & Vascular Neurology2022,7,1:3
