RECENT ADVANCES IN RESEARCH AND FORECASTING OF TROPICAL CYCLONE TRACK, INTENSITY, AND STRUCTURE AT LANDFALL显示文摘This review prepared for the fourth International Workshop on Tropical Cyclone Landfall Processes(IWTCLP-4) summarizes the most recent(2015-2017) theoretical and practical knowledge in the field of tropical cyclone(TC) track, intensity, and structure rapid changes at or near landfall. Although the focus of IWTCLPIV was on landfall, this summary necessarily embraces the characteristics of storms during their course over the ocean prior to and leading up to landfall. In the past few years, extremely valuable observational datasets have been collected for TC forecasting guidance and research studies using both aircraft reconnaissance and new geostationary or low-earth orbiting satellites at high temporal and spatial resolution. Track deflections for systems near complex topography such as that of Taiwan and La Réunion have been further investigated, and advanced numerical models with high spatial resolution necessary to predict the interaction of the TC circulation with steep island topography have been developed. An analog technique has been designed to meet the need for longer range landfall intensity forecast guidance that will provide more time for emergency preparedness. Probabilistic track and intensity forecasts have also been developed to better communicate on forecast uncertainty. Operational practices of several TC forecast centers are described herein and some challenges regarding forecasts and warnings for TCs making landfall are identified. This review concludes with insights from both researchers and forecasters regarding future directions to improve predictions of TC track, intensity, and structure at landfall. | MARIE-DOMINIQUE LEROUX KIMBERLY WOOD RUSSELL L.ELSBERRY ESPERANZA O.CAYANAN ERIC HENDRICKS MATTHEW KUCAS PETER OTTO ROBERT ROGERS BUCK SAMPSON ZIFENG YU | 2018 | Tropical Cyclone Research and Review2018,7,2: | 4
Science and prediction of monsoon heavy rainfall显示文摘With the increasing incidence of heavy rainfall events, particularly over the monsoon regions, the highly dense populations are more vulnerable[1].Research initiatives on observation, modeling, and prediction of monsoon heavy rainfall have been promoted actively by World Weather Research Programme's(WWRP)Working Group on Tropical Meteorology Research(WGTMR)of the World Meteorological Organization(WMO)since 2010.Series of monsoon-heavy-rainfall workshops were held in Beijing(2011),Petaling Jaya(2012),and New Delhi(2015)to benefit scientists worldwide and forecasters from the National Meteorological and Hydrological Services. An international Research and Development Project, namely, the Southern China Monsoon Rainfall Experiment(SCMREX)[2]was established in 2013 to coordinate field campaign experiments and to conduct scientific research on presummer(April-June)heavy rainfall processes in southern China. | Yali Luo Liye Li Richard HJohnson Chih-Pei Chang Lianshou Chen Wai-Kin Wong Jing Chen Kalli Furtado John LMcBride Ajit Tyagi Nanette Lomarda Thierry Lefort Esperanza O.Cayanan | 2019 | Science Bulletin2019,64,21: | 4
Synsepalum dulcificum extracts exhibit cytotoxic activity on human colorectal cancer cells and upregulate c-fos and c-jun early apoptotic gene expression显示文摘Objective: To explore cytotoxicity of Synsepalum dulcificum(S. dulcificum) Daniell(Sapotaceae) on human colon cancer(HCT-116 and HT-29), human monocytic leukemia(THP-1) and normal(HDFn) cell lines, and its effect on the expression of early apoptotic genes, c-fos and c-jun. Methods: Leaf, stem and berry of S. dulcificum were separately extracted by using 2 solvents, 10% ethanol(EtOH) and 80% methanol(MeOH). PrestoB lue~? cell viability assay and q RT-PCR assay were conducted to examine the above objectives respectively. Results: Stem MeOH, stem EtOH, and berry EtOH extracts of S. dulcificum were cytotoxic to HCT-116 and HT-29 human colon cancer cells. For HCT-116, IC_(50) values of these 3 extracts were not significantly different(P>0.05) from that of the positive control bleomycin(IC_(50) of 33.57 μg/mL), while for HT-29, IC_(50) values of these 3 extracts were significantly lower(P<0.05) than that of bleomycin(IC_(50) of 25.24 μg/mL). None of the extracts were cytotoxic to the THP-1 monocytic leukemia cells and HDFn normal human dermal fibroblasts. For both HCT-116 and HT-29, these extracts significantly up-regulated(P<0.05) the expression of c-fos and c-jun compared to the untreated negative control. Conclusions: The results of this study suggest that cytotoxicity of stem MeOH, stem EtOH, and berry EtOH extracts of S. dulcificum on HCT-116 and HT-29 colon cancer cells is due to the induced apoptosis which is caused by the up-regulation of the expression of early apoptotic genes, c-fos and c-jun. | Jichang Seong Glenn G.Oyong Esperanza C.Cabrera | 2018 | Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Biomedicine2018,8,3: | 4
Novel nutraceutic therapies for the treatment of metabolic syndrome显示文摘Nutraceutic therapies such as berberine, bitter melon,Gymnema sylvestre, Irvingia gabonensis, resveratrol and ursolic acid have been shown to help control metabolic syndrome(MetS). The effect of berberine on glucose and lipid metabolism, hypertension, obesity and MetS has been evaluated in animal models and humans. Most clinical trials involving bitter melon have been conducted to evaluate its effect on glucose metabolism; nevertheless, some studies have reported favorable effects on lipids and blood pressure although there is little information about its effect on body weight. Gymnema sylvestre helps to decrease body weight and blood sugar levels; however, there is limited information on dyslipidemia and hypertension. Clinical trials of Irvingia gabonensis have shown important effects decreasing glucose and cholesterol concentrations as well decreasing body weight. Resveratrol acts through different mechanisms to decrease blood pressure, lipids, glucose and weight, showing its effects on the population with Met S. Finally, there is evidence of positive effects with ursolic acid in in vitro and in vivo studies on glucose and lipid metabolism and on body weight and visceral fat. Therefore, a review of the beneficial effects and limitations of the above-mentioned nutraceutic therapies is presented. | Esperanza Martínez-Abundis Miriam Mendez-del Villar Karina G Pérez-Rubio Laura Y Zuniga Marisol Cortez-Navarrete Alejandra Ramírez-Rodriguez Manuel González-Ortiz | 2016 | World Journal of Diabetes2016,7,7: | 3
Mercury removal using ground and calcined mussel shell显示文摘We determined mercury retention on calcined and ground mussel shell, in presence and absence of phosphate, using batch and stirred flow chamber experiments. In batch experiments the calcined shell exhibited higher Hg adsorption, with good fitting to Freundlich equation(R2: 0.925–0.978); the presence of phosphate increased Hg adsorption; mercury desorption was 13% or lower, diminishing up to 2% under the presence of phosphates. In stirred flow chamber experiments calcined shell retained more Hg than ground shells(6300 vs. 4000–5200 μmol/kg); Hg retention increased an additional 40% on calcined shell and up to an additional 70% on ground shells when phosphates were present; mercury desorption was quite similar in all shell types(20%–34%), increasing up to 49%–60% in ground shells when phosphates were present. The higher Hg adsorption on calcined shell would be related to its calcite and dolomite concentrations; mercury-phosphate interactions would cause the increase in Hg retention when phosphates are present. Data on Hg desorption suggest that Hg retention was not easily reversible after batch experiments, increasing in the stirred flow chamber due to convective flow. Calcined and ground mussel shells could be recycled removing Hg from water, with the presence of phosphates in solution improving efcacy. | Susana Pea-Rodríguez Alipio Bermúdez-Couso Juan Carlos Nóvoa-Muoz Manuel Arias-Estvez María J.Fernndez-Sanjurjo Esperanza lvarez-Rodríguez Avelino Núez-Delgado | 2013 | Journal of Environmental Sciences2013,25,12: | 3
In vivo gastric mucosal histopathology using endocytoscopy显示文摘AIM:To study the ability of endocytoscopy to identify normal gastric mucosa and to exclude Helicobacter pylori(H.pylori) infection.METHODS:Endocytoscopic examination of the gastric corpus and antrum was performed in 70 consecutive patients.Target biopsy specimens were also obtained from the assessed region and multiple H.pylori tests were performed. The normal endocytoscopy patterns of the corpus and antrum were divided into the normal pit-dominant type(n-Pit) or the normal papilladominant type(n-Pap), respectively characterized as either regular pits with capillary networks or round, smooth papillary structures with spiral capillaries. On the other hand, normal mucosa was defined as mucosa not demonstrating histological abnormalities, including inflammation and atrophy.RESULTS:The sensitivity and specificity of n-Pit for normal mucosa in the gastric corpus were 94.4%and 97.1%,respectively,whereas those of n-Pap for normal mucosa in the antrum were 92.0%and 86.7%,respectively.The positive predictive values of n-Pit and n-Pap for H.pylori-negative tissue were 88.6%and 93.1%,respectively,and their negative predictive values for H.pylori-negative tissues were 42.9%and41.5%,respectively.The inter-observer agreement for determining n-Pit and n-Pap for normal mucosa were0.857 and 0.769,respectively,which is considered reliable.CONCLUSION:N-Pit and n-Pap,seen using EC,are considered useful predictors of normal mucosa and theabsence of H.pylori infection. | Hiroki Sato Haruhiro Inoue Haruo Ikeda Chiaki Sato Chainarong Phlanusittepha Bu'Hussain Hayee Esperanza Grace R Santi Yasutoshi Kobayashi Shin-ei Kudo | 2015 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2015,21,16: | 3

Dendritic cell deficiencies persist seven months after SARS-CoV-2 infection显示文摘Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus(SARS-CoV)-2 infection induces an exacerbated inflammation driven by innate immunity components.Dendritic cells(DCs)play a key role in the defense against viral infections, for instance plasmacytoid DCs(pDCs),have the capacity to produce vast amounts of interferon-alpha(IFN-α).In COVID-19 there is a deficit in DC numbers and IFN-αproduction,which has been associated with disease severity. In this work,we described that in addition to the DC deficiency, several DC activation and homing markers were altered in acute COVID-19 patients, which were associated with multiple inflammatory markers.Remarkably, previously hospitalized and nonhospitalized patients remained with decreased numbers of CD1c+myeloid DCs and pDCs seven months after SARS-CoV-2 infection. Moreover, the expression of DC markers such as CD86 and CD4 were only restored in previously nonhospitalized patients, while no restoration of integrinβ7 and indoleamine 2,3-dyoxigenase(IDO)levels were observed. These findings contribute to a better understanding of the immunological sequelae of COVID-19. | Alberto Pérez-Gómez Joana Vitallé Carmen Gasca-Capote Alicia Gutierrez-Valencia María Trujillo-Rodriguez Ana Serna-Gallego Esperanza Muñoz-Muela María de los Reyes Jiménez-Leon Mohamed Rafii-El-Idrissi Benhnia Inmaculada Rivas-Jeremias Cesar Sotomayor Cristina Roca-Oporto Nuria Espinosa Carmen Infante-Domínguez Juan Carlos Crespo-Rivas Alberto Fernández-Villar Alexandre Pérez-González Luis Fernando López-Cortés Eva Poveda Ezequiel Ruiz-Mateos JoséMiguel Cisneros Sonsoles Salto-Alejandre Judith Berastegui-Cabrera Pedro Camacho-Martínez Carmen Infante-Domínguez Marta Carretero-Ledesma Juan Carlos Crespo-Rivas Eduardo Márquez JoséManuel Lomas Claudio Bueno Rosario Amaya JoséAntonio Lepe Jerónimo Pachón Elisa Cordero Javier Sánchez-Céspedes Manuela Aguilar-Guisado Almudena Aguilera Clara Aguilera Teresa Aldabo-Pallas Verónica Alfaro-Lara Cristina Amodeo Javier Ampuero María Dolores Avilés Maribel Asensio Bosco Barón-Franco Lydia Barrera-Pulido Rafael Bellido-Alba Máximo Bernabeu-Wittel Candela Caballero-Eraso Macarena Cabrera Enrique Calderón Jesús Carbajal-Guerrero Manuela Cid-Cumplido Yael Corcia-Palomo Juan Delgado Antonio Domínguez-Petit Alejandro Deniz Reginal Dusseck-Brutus Ana Escoresca-Ortega Fátima Espinosa Nuria Espinosa Michelle Espinoza Carmen Ferrándiz-Millón Marta Ferrer Teresa Ferrer Ignacio Gallego-Texeira Rosa Gámez-Mancera Emilio García Horacio García-Delgado Manuel García-Gutiérrez María Luisa Gascón-Castillo Aurora González-Estrada Demetrio González Carmen Gómez-González Rocío González-León Carmen Grande-Cabrerizo Sonia Gutiérrez Carlos Hernández-Quiles Inmaculada Concepción Herrera-Melero Marta Herrero-Romero Luis Jara Carlos Jiménez-Juan Silvia Jiménez-Jorge Mercedes Jiménez-Sánchez Julia Lanseros-Tenllado Carmina López Isabel López Álvaro López-Barrios Luis F.López-Cortés Rafael Luque-Márquez Daniel Macías-García Guillermo Martín-Gutiérrez Luis Martín-Villén JoséMolina Aurora Morillo María Dolores Navarro-Amuedo Dolores Nieto-Martín Francisco Ortega María Paniagua-García Amelia Peña-Rodríguez Esther Pérez Manuel Poyato Julia Praena-Segovia Rafaela Ríos Cristina Roca-Oporto Jesús F.Rodríguez María Jesús Rodríguez-Hernández Santiago Rodríguez-Suárez Ángel Rodríguez-Villodres Nieves Romero-Rodríguez Ricardo Ruiz Zida Ruiz de Azua Celia Salamanca Sonia Sánchez Víctor Manuel Sánchez-Montagut César Sotomayor Alejandro Suárez Benjumea Javier Toral | 2021 | Cellular & Molecular Immunology2021,18,9: | 2
