1Sustainable Utilization of Agricultural Straw for Harmful Algal Blooms Control:A Review显示文摘The use of agricultural straw for algal bloom control has been studied for more than 30 years. In this article,we have reviewed the promising potentials of using agricultural straw as source of anti-algal agents, including the effectiveness of each major straw type so far used in this regard, and the investigated algal species.Various pre-treatment methods have also been widely reviewed.Significant progress has been made in natural product chemistry and molecular biology with regards to agricultural straw, especially in relation to the extraction of antialgal allelochemicals, degradation processes of agricultural straws and the mechanisms through which these inhibitions occur. The development of biotechnologies using agricultural straw to successfully inhibit growth of bloom forming algae has been generally accepted as environmentally friendly. The current research status and that of the future should include isolation and discovery of antialgal allelochemicals, development of models that would illustrate the sequence of physiologic events that match the species-specific inhibitor phenomenon, and products fit in the field applications.Kokoette Effiong Jing Hu Caicai Xu Tao Tang Haomin Huang Jiangning Zeng Xi Xiao 2020Journal of Renewable Materials2020,8,5:2

4Vitamin E in the management of pancreatic cancer: A scoping review显示文摘Pancreatic cancer is the leading cause of cancer mortality worldwide.Research investigating effective management strategies for pancreatic cancer is ongoing.Vitamin E,consisting of both tocopherol and tocotrienol, has demonstrated debatable effects on pancreatic cancer cells. Therefore, this scoping review aims to summarize the effects of vitamin E on pancreatic cancer. In October 2022,a literature search was conducted using PubMed and Scopus since their inception.Original studies on the effects of vitamin E on pancreatic cancer, including cell cultures, animal models and human clinical trials, were considered for this review. The literature search found 75 articles on this topic, but only 24 articles met the inclusion criteria. The available evidence showed that vitamin E modulated proliferation, cell death, angiogenesis, metastasis and inflammation in pancreatic cancer cells. However, the safety and bioavailability concerns remain to be answered with more extensive preclinical and clinical studies.More in-depth analysis is necessary to investigate further the role of vitamin E in the management of pancreatic cancers.Sophia Ogechi Ekeuku Effiong Paul Etim Kok-Lun Pang Kok-Yong Chin Chun-Wai Mai 2023World Journal of Gastrointestinal Oncology2023,15,6:1

7Prevalence of hepatitis B virus infection and associated risk factors among adult females infected with Human Immunodeficiency Virus in Ogun State,Nigeria显示文摘Background:Hepatitis B virus(HBV)infection is prevalent in sub-Saharan Africa, including Nigeria, and is frequently observed in individuals co-infected with human immunodeficiency virus(HIV).Objective:This study aims to evaluate the prevalence of serological markers for hepatitis B virus and identify the associated risk factors among women with HIV undergoing highly active antiretroviral therapy(HAART)in Ogun State,Nigeria. Methods:Ethical approval was obtained from the Babcock University Health Research Ethics Committee(BUHREC)to recruit a total of 110 adult women infected with HIV,receiving treatment at the HIV clinics of Babcock University Teaching Hospital(BUTH)in Ilishan-Remo and General Hospital in Ijebu-Ode,both located in Ogun State,Nigeria. The participants’HIV status were confirmed using three rapid diagnostic kits:Determine(Abbott Laboratories,Tokyo,Japan),Unigold HIV(Trinity Biotech Plc Bray,Co.Wicklow,Ireland),and 1/2 Stat Pak(Abbott Laboratories,Tokyo,Japan)(Chembio Diagnostic Systems,New York,USA).Additionally,an HBV 5 in 1 Panel manufactured by Innovation Biotechnology Co.,Ltd in Beijing,China, was employed to detect HBV markers qualitatively in serum samples. Results:Out of the 110 subjects that voluntarily participated in the study,4(3.6%)tested positive for HBsAg,2(1.8%)tested positive for HBsAb,81(73.6%)tested positive for HBeAg,3(2.7%)tested positive for HBeAb,and 65(59.1%)tested positive for HBcAb.There was no significant correlation between the occurrence of HBsAg and the socio-demographic characteristics of the participants(P>0.05).Various risk factors were identified, including lack of knowledge about HBV,absence of HBV vaccination history, history of blood transfusion, organ transplant, and engaging in unprotected sex, among others. Conclusion:The findings highlight the presence of HBV infection among HIV-positive women undergoing HAART in Ogun State,Nigeria, particularly within the age groups of 18–25 years and 26–30 years. These results emphasize the necessity for continuous and targeted public health interventions among this specific population.John Cletus Ihongbe Seyi Samson Enitan Michael Olugbamila Dada Oluchi Ofem Oluchi Gladys Ofem Effiong Joseph Effiong Olalekan Ademola Kemiki Amarachi Favour Ogbonna 2023Infectious Diseases Research2023,4,3:0
8Study the suitability of neem seed oil for formulation of eco-friendly oil based drilling fluid显示文摘The present work intended to develop an invert emulsion drilling mud from biodegradable neem seed oil as an alternative to conventional diesel-based drilling mud. This would present comparable properties and performances with API standard requirements, ecologically friendly and at a low cost.Biodiesel produced from non-edible neem oil was used as the continuous phase in an invert emulsion-based drilling mud.Different tests to investigate the applicability of the mud for drilling applications were conducted. The rheological and lubricity tests results indicate that the neem oil biodiesel-based drilling muds are comparable with conventional diesel-based drilling muds. The produced biodiesel shows a significantly better flash point of 168℃ than the traditional diesel flash point of 70℃;indicating better fire safety than the conventional diesel. The lubricity and rheological data indicate the formulated mud with neem seed oil biodiesel fair reasonably well with conventional diesel and within the API requirements. In general, the preliminary results show that neem oil biodiesel is a potential alternative to conventional organic oil in formulating oil-based drilling mud in terms of technical and environmental analysis.Adesina Fadairo Gbadegesin Adeyemi Temitope Ogunkunle Kegang Ling Vamegh Rasouli Elijah Effiong James Ayoo 2021Petroleum Research2021,6,3:0
