12Green Buildings:The Future of Sustainable Living显示文摘The objective of this research project was fulfilled through creation of a contemporary home,that of which undeniably projects modernization due to key LEED(leadership in energy and environmental design)features.Design of this project was carefully supervised by the civil engineering department at California State University,Northridge.The design incorporates a 3-story single-family home with a steel infrastructure.These design properties had a positive impact in LEED specific adjustments which assisted with the overall increase in sustainability.The six civil engineering senior students were able to successfully create a cost analysis and compare the benefits of a LEED incorporated design as opposed to a standard residential home.The difference between the two is evident as the highly sustainable building resulted in a 7.6%increase in overall cost.However,as the savings in energy progress over a 9-year period,the home will inevitably reduce the overall cost to the owner.This research project aided in allowing this diverse team of students to be exposed to real life scenarios,with incorporation of their knowledge acquired from the past 4 years.The diversity and teamwork of this group allowed for equal opportunities of innovation and leadership.Skills such as proper communication and critical thinking will significantly impact them as they progress in their careers as civil engineers.Ao He Dylan Khalil Jose Luna Toledo Adam Julio Martinez Uziel Martinez Giovanni Morales Tadeh Zirakian David Boyajian 2022Journal of Civil Engineering and Architecture2022,16,4:0
13A boronate-based modular assembly nanosystem to block the undesirable crosstalk between hepatic stellate cells and Kupffer cells显示文摘Crosstalk between Kupffer cells(KCs)and hepatic stellate cells(HSCs)plays an important role in multiple liver disease conditions,including the formation of liver fibrosis in alcohol-associated liver disease(AALD).Therapeutic targeting of the KC-HSC crosstalk is a prime target for therapeutic interventions.Herein,a novel modular nanosystem was designed and prepared through the self-assembly utilizing boric acid and catechol interactions to prepare polymers modified with a CXCR4-inhibiting moieties.The polymers were used to encapsulate anti-miR-155 and to block the undesirable crosstalk between HSCs and KCs by downregulating miR-155 expression in KCs with the parallel inhibition of CXCR4 signaling in activated HSCs.The combined inhibition of miR-155 and CXCR4 at two different liver cell types achieved improved antifibrosis effects in a mouse model of AALD fibrosis.Our finding highlights the key role that blocking the undesirable crosstalk between HSCs and KCs plays in reversing AALD fibrosis as well as demonstrates a proof-of-concept approach for designing and constructing multifunctional delivery nanosystems using orthogonal functional modules based on the understanding of disease mechanisms.Huizhen Jia Ling Ding Ao Yu Weimin Tang Siyuan Tang Chuhan Zhang David Oupický 2023Bioactive Materials2023,,7:0
