| 1 | Effect of Gastrodin on Early Brain Injury and Neurological Outcome After Subarachnoid Hemorrhage in Rats显示文摘Gastrodin is a phenolic glycoside that has been demonstrated to provide neuroprotection in preclinical models of central nervous system disease, but its effect in subarachnoid hemorrhage(SAH) remains unclear. In this study, we showed that intraperitoneal administration of gastrodin(100 mg/kg per day) significantly attenuated the SAH-induced neurological deficit, brain edema, and increased blood-brain barrier permeability in rats. Meanwhile, gastrodin treatment significantly reduced the SAHinduced elevation of glutamate concentration in the cerebrospinal fluid and the intracellular Ca2+ overload.Moreover, gastrodin suppressed the SAH-induced microglial activation, astrocyte activation, and neuronal apoptosis. Mechanistically, gastrodin significantly reduced the oxidative stress and inflammatory response, up-regulated the expression of nuclear factor erythroid 2–related factor2, heme oxygenase-1, phospho-Akt and B-cell lymphoma2, and down-regulated the expression of BCL2-associated X protein and cleaved caspase-3. | 2 | Blade optimization design and performance investigations of an ultra-low specific speed centrifugal blower显示文摘The ultra-low specific speed centrifugal blower is widely used in energy industries due to its features such as low flow rate,high pressure and low manufacturing cost. However,the width-to-diameter ratio of the above blower becomes relatively small to satisfy the needed operation condition and its performances are considerably degraded as a result of relatively high leakage,disc friction and passage friction loss consequently. The purpose of this paper is to improve its performance through the optimization design of the blade’s profile properly. Based on artificial neural networks (ANN) and hierarchical fair competition genetic algorithms with dynamic niche (HFCDN-GAs),the optimization design approach is established. By conjoining Bezier parameterization and FINE/TURBO solver,the optimized blade is designed by adjusting the profile gradually. An industrial ultra-low specific speed centrifugal blower with parallel hub and shroud has been selected as a reference case for optimization design. The performance investigations of the centrifugal blowers with different types of blades are conducted. | 3 | A novel colloidal gold immunochromatography assay strip for the diagnosis of schistosomiasis japonica in domestic animals显示文摘Background:Schistosomiasis remains a major public health concern in China and an epidemiological survey has revealed that schistosome-infected bovines and goats are the main transmission sources for the disease.Therefore,development of a sensitive technique for the diagnosis of schistosomiasis in domestic animals is necessary.Method:A novel colloidal gold immunochromatography assay(GICA)strip was developed for detecting Schistosoma japonicum in domestic animals.The colloidal gold was conjugated with recombinant streptococcal protein G(rSPG).As the test and control lines,the schistosome soluble egg antigen and rSPG,respectively,were blotted on nitrocellulose membrane.Results:The lowest detectable serum dilution was 1∶640 for schistosome-infected buffaloes.The cross-reaction rate of GICA was 14.29%with Paramphistomum sp.in buffaloes,16.67%with Haemonchus sp.in goats,and 33.33%with Orientobilharzia sp.in goats.These results were slightly lower and similar to those obtained through ELISA.Moreover,the strips for detecting S.japonicum in mice,rabbits,buffaloes,and goats showed high sensitivity(100.00%,100.00%,100.00%,and 100.00%,respectively)and specificity(100.00%,100.00%,94.23%,and 88.64%,respectively).And the sensitivity or specificity of the GICA strips did not present any significant differences after storage for 12 months at room temperature.When compared with ELISA,the GICA strips exhibited similar sensitivity and specificity in the diagnosis of schistosomiasis in mice,rabbits,buffaloes,and goats.Besides,only 5μl of serum are required for the test and the detection can be completed within 5 min.Conclusion:This study is the first to develop a GICA strip using gold-rSPG conjugate for the diagnosing of schistosomiasis in domestic animals,and preliminary results showed that the developed strip may be suitable for large-scale screening of schistosomiasis in endemic areas. | Rui Xu Jintao Feng Yang Hong Chao Lv Dengyun Zhao Jiaojiao Lin Ke Lu Hao Li Jinming Liu Xiaodan Cao Tao Wang Jinli Zai Zhaozhe Wang Bingguang Jia Qian Han Chuangang Zhu | 2017 | Infectious Diseases of Poverty2017,6,1: | 12 |
| 4 | Self-Recirculating Casing Treatment for a Radial Compressor显示文摘Casing treatment is a widely employed technique to increase the stall margins of turbomachineries. In the last several decades,many researches on casing treatment have been carried out. However,the mechanism of its expanding stall margins is still not very clear. Till now,most casing teatment schemes are designed for axial compressors,while the investigations on casing treatments in centrifugal compressors are rarely reported. Moreover,current investigation methods mainly focus on experiments,and perfect theoretical analysis is not yet feasible. In order to study the effectiveness and further the mechanism of casing treatments in centrifugal compressors,in this paper,a computationally based investigation of the impact of the self-recirculating casing treatment on the performance of a radial compressor is carried out. The results indicate that,by casing bleed and injection,the casing treatment with inclined blades in the cavity expands the stall margin most. At low mass flows,the reversed flow through the cavity with inclined blades develops the counter swirl flow in front of the impeller inlet,which is considered to benefit increasing the pressure rise from the injection port to the bleed port and thereby augment the recirculating flow. At 120% design speed,the stall margin is larger than that at the design speed. However,the cost of extending the stall margin is the reduction of isentropic efficiency. A mended casing treatment by shifting the bleed port upstream is also studied. | 6 | Ten years of carbon-based metal-free electrocatalysts显示文摘Since the discovery of the first carbon-based metal-free electrocatalysts(C-MFECs,i.e.,N-doped carbon nanotubes)for the oxygen reduction reaction in 2009,the field of C-MFECs has grown enormously over the last 10 years.C-MFECs,as alternatives to nonprecious transition metals and/or precious noble metal-based electrocatalysts,have been consistently demonstrated as efficient catalysts for oxygen reduction,oxygen evolution,hydrogen evolution,carbon dioxide reduction,nitrogen reduction,and many other(electro-)chemical reactions.Recent research and development of C-MFECs have indicated their potential applications in fuel cells,metal-air batteries,and hydrogen generation through water oxidation as well as electrochemical production of various commodity chemicals,such as ammonia,alcohols,hydrogen peroxide,and other useful hydrocarbons.Further research and development of C-MFECs would surely revolutionize traditional energy conversion and storage technologies with minimal environmental impact.In this short review article,we summarize the journey of C-MFECs over the past 10 years with an emphasis on materials development and their structure-property characterization for applications in fuel cells and metal-air batteries.Current challenges and future prospects of this emerging field are also discussed. | Rajib Paul Quanbin Dai Chuangang Hu Liming Dai | 2019 | Carbon Energy2019,1,1: | 7 |
| 7 | Strain and stress variations in the human amniotic membrane and fresh corpse autologous sciatic nerve anastomosis in a model of sciatic nerve injury显示文摘A 10-mm long sciatic nerve injury model was established in fresh normal Chinese patient cadavers. Amniotic membrane was harvested from healthy maternal placentas and was prepared into multilayered,coiled,tubular specimens.Sciatic nerve injury models were respectively anastomosed using the autologous cadaveric sciatic nerve and human amniotic membrane.Tensile test results showed that maximal loading,maximal displacement,maximal stress,and maximal strain of sciatic nerve injury models anastomosed with human amniotic membrane were greater than those in the autologous nerve anastomosis group.The strain-stress curves of the human amniotic membrane and sciatic nerves indicated exponential change at the first phase,which became elastic deformation curves at the second and third phases,and displayed plastic deformation curves at the fourth phase,at which point the specimens lost their bearing capacity.Experimental findings suggested that human amniotic membranes and autologous sciatic nerves exhibit similar stress-strain curves, good elastic properties,and certain strain and stress capabilities in anastomosis of the injured sciatic nerve. | Chuangang Peng Qiao Zhang Qi Yang Qingsan Zhu | 2012 | Neural Regeneration Research2012,7,23: | 6 |

| 10 | Hybrid rice yield response to potted-seedling machine transplanting and slow-release nitrogen fertilizer application combined with urea topdressing显示文摘Machine transplanting and the application of slow-release nitrogen(N) fertilizer(SRNF) have played vital roles in the modernization of rice production. We aimed to determine the effects of potted-seedling transplanting—a new machine-transplanting method—and SRNF on hybrid rice yields. A 2-year splitplot experiment(2016–2017) was conducted in Meishan, Sichuan province, China, using two machinetransplanting methods(potted-seedling and blanket-seedling) and three N treatments. Total green leaf area, high-effective leaf area and its rate at heading, net photosynthetic rate of flag leaves 7 days after heading, glutamate synthase(GOGAT) and glutamine synthase(GS) activity after heading, dry matter production, and N accumulation at heading and maturity increased under the potted-seedling method or 70% SRNF as a base + 30% urea application at the panicle initiation stage(SBUP). Stem diameter and number of small and of all vascular bundles at the neck–panicle node in potted-seedling plants increased as a result of increasing numbers of effective panicles, secondary branches, and spikelets. In pottedseedling plants, treatment with SBUP increased the number of large and total vascular bundles at the panicle–neck internode and the number of differentiated and surviving secondary branches and spikelets and decreased the number of ineffective tillers and degenerated secondary branches and spikelets. | 11 | Performance of a centrifugal compressor with holed casing treatment in the large flowrate condition显示文摘As demonstrated by former work,the holed casing treatment can be used to expand the stall margin of a centrifugal compressor with unshrouded impeller.In addition,the choked margin can also be expanded as experimental results indicated.Moreover,the compressor performance,especially the efficiency,on the whole working range is improved.As shown by experiments,the stall margin and choked margin of the compressor are extended,and the maximum efficiency improvement is 14%at the large flowrate of 1.386.Numerical simulations were carried out to analyze the flow in the impeller and in the holes in the case of large flowrate.The results indicate that in large flowrate conditions,there is a low-pressure region on the throat part of the impeller passage,leading to the bypass flows appearing in the holes,which means the flow area at the inlet of the impeller is increased.The bypass flow can also contribute to the decrease of the Mach number at the throat part near the shroud end-wall which implies that the choked margin is expanded.Besides,as the bypass flow would inhibit the development of the vertexes in the tip clearance and suppress the flow recirculation in the shroud end-wall region,both the pressure ratio and efficiency of the compressor are improved,which agrees well with the experiments. | XU Wei WANG Tong GU ChuanGang | 2011 | Science China(Technological Sciences)2011,54,9: | 3 |
| 12 | Puerarin accelerates neural regeneration after sciatic nerve injury显示文摘Puerarin is a natural isoflavone isolated from plants of the genus Pueraria and functions as a protector against cerebral ischemia. We hypothesized that puerarin can be involved in the repair of peripheral nerve injuries. To test this hypothesis, doses of 10, 5, or 2.5 mg/kg per day puerarin(8-(β-D-Glucopyranosyl-7-hydroxy-3-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-4H-1-benzopyran-4-one) were injected intraperitoneally into mouse models of sciatic nerve injury. Puerarin at the middle and high doses significantly up-regulated the expression of growth-associated protein 43 in the L4–6 segments of the spinal cord from mice at 1, 2, and 4 weeks after modeling, and reduced the atrophy of the triceps surae on the affected side and promoted the regeneration of nerve fibers of the damaged spinal cord at 8 weeks after injury. | 14 | p53 deficiency-induced Smad1 upregulation suppresses tumorigenesis and causes chemoresistance in colorectal cancers显示文摘The DNA damage response helps to maintain genome integrity,suppress tumorigenesis,and mediate the effects of radiotherapy and chemotherapy.Our previous studies have shown that Smad1 is upregulated and activated by Atm in DNA damage response,which can further bind to p53 and promote p53 stabilization.Herewe report another aspect of the interplay between p53 and Smad1.Comparison of rectal tumor against paired paraneoplastic specimens and analysis of>500 colorectal tumors revealed that Smad1 was upregulated in tumor samples,which was attributable to p53 defects.Using MEFs as a model,we found that knockdown of the elevated Smad1 in p532/2 MEFs promoted cell proliferation,E1A/Ras-induced cell transformation,and tumorigenesis.Mechanistic studies suggest that elevated Smad1 and momentary activation inhibit cell proliferation by upregulating p57Kip2 and enhancing Atm–Chk2 activation.Surprisingly,elevated Smad1 appears to have a negative effect on chemotherapy,as colorectal tumors,primary cancer cells,and cell lines with Smad1 knockdown all showed an increase in chemosensitivity,which could be attributable to elevated p57Kip2.These findings underscore the significance of Smad1–p53 interaction in tumor suppression and reveal an unexpected role for Smad1 in chemoresistance of colorectal cancers. | Xinsen Ruan Qiao Zuo Hao Jia Jenny Chau Jinlin Lin Junping Ao Xuechun Xia Huijuan Liu Samy LHabib Chuangang Fu Baojie Li | 2015 | Journal of Molecular Cell Biology2015,7,2: | 2 |
