| 1 | Therapeutic potential of Gastrodia elata Blume for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease显示文摘Several studies have demonstrated that the Chinese herb Gastrodia elata Blume can protect against amyloid beta-peptide (Aβ)-induced cell death. To investigate the possible therapeutic effects of Gastrodia elata Blume on Alzheimer's disease, we established a rat model of Alzheimer's disease by injecting Aβ 25-35 into bilateral hippocampi. These rats were intragastrically administered 500 or 1 000 mg/kg Gastrodia elata Blume per day for 52 consecutive days. Morris water maze tests showed that Gastrodia elata Blume treatment significantly improved the spatial memory of Alzheimer's disease rats. Congo red staining revealed that Gastrodia elata Blume significantly reduced the number of amyloid deposits in the hippocampus of these rats. Western blot analysis showed that choline acetyltransferase expression in the medial septum and hippocampus was significantly increased by the treatment of Gastrodia elata Blume,while Ellman method showed significant decrease in the activity of acetylcholinesterase in all three regions (prefrontal cortex,medial septum and hippocampus). | 4 | Biopathologic features and clinical significance of micrometatasis in the lymph node of early gastric cancer显示文摘AIM: To evaluate the biopathologic features and clinical significance of nodal micrometastasis(MI) in early gastric cancer(EGC).METHODS: Among 1022 EGC patients who underwent gastrectomy with lymphadenectomy of D1 + β or more from March 2001 to December 2005 at the Korean National Cancer Center, available nodal metastasis was found in 90 p T1N1 patients. Nodal metastasis was confirmed by immunohistochemistry(IHC) with cytokeratin and patients were classified into MI and macrometastasis(MA) groups based on the main tumor burden according to the 6th International Union Against Cancer/American Joint Committee on Cancer staging system; the main tumor burden with a diameter of greater than 0.2 mm but no greater than 2 mm as MI, and greater than 2 mm as MA of the representative metastatic node. Proliferative and apoptotic activities of the primary tumor and the nodal metastasis were measured by IHC with Ki-67 and terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase d UTP nick end labeling, respectively. Biopathologic and clinical features of the patients were analyzed and compared between MI and MA groups. Patients with recurrence were compared with those without recurrence to identify risk factors for recurrence.RESULTS: Thirty-seven patients showed MI and the other 53 patients revealed MA in the lymph node; the incidence of patients with MI and MA was 41.1% and 58.9%. The main tumor burden was 0.9 and 4.6 mm in the representative metastatic node, respectively. Japanese N2 stations were more frequently involved in MA group(20.9%) than in MI group(10.3%) butthe difference was not statistically different(P = 0.338). Proliferative and apoptotic activities of MI were decreased than those of MA(26.7% vs 40.5%, P = 0.004 and 1.0% vs 3.0%, P < 0.001, respectively). However, nodal MI in the current study showed a relatively high proliferative activity and an equivalent apoptotic activity compared to other cancers in the previously published studies. Recurrence was observed in 6 patients during the mean follow up period of 87.6 ± 26.2 mo. | 5 | Scolopendra subspinipes mutilans protected the ceruleininduced acute pancreatitis by inhibiting high-mobility group box protein-1显示文摘AIM:To evaluate the inhibitory effects of Scolopendra subspinipes mutilans(SSM) on cerulein-induced acute pancreatitis(AP) in a mouse model.METHODS:SSM water extract(0.1,0.5,or 1 g/kg) was administrated intraperitoneally 1 h prior to the first injection of cerulein.Once AP developed,the stable cholecystokinin analogue,cerulein was injected hourly,over a 6 h period.Blood samples were taken 6 h later to determine serum amylase,lipase,and cytokine levels.The pancreas and lungs were rapidly removed for morphological examination,myeloperoxidase assay,and real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction.To specify the role of SSM in pancreatitis,the pancreatic acinar cells were isolated using collagenase method.Then the cells were pre-treated with SSM,then stimulated with cerulein.The cell viability,cytokine productions and high-mobility group box protein-1(HMGB-1) were measured.Furthermore,the regulating mechanisms of SSM action were evaluated.RESULTS:The administration of SSM significantly attenuated the severity of pancreatitis and pancreatitis associated lung injury,as was shown by the reduction in pancreatic edema,neutrophil infiltration,vacuolization and necrosis.SSM treatment also reduced pancreatic weight/body weight ratio,serum amylase,lipase and cytokine levels,and mRNA expression of multiple inflammatory mediators such as tumor necrosis factor-α and interleukin-1β.In addition,treatment with SSM inhibited HMGB-1 expression in the pancreas during AP.In accordance with in vivo data,SSM inhibited the cerulein-induced acinar cell death,cytokine,and HMGB-1 release.SSM also inhibited the activation of c-Jun NH2-terminal kinase,p38 and nuclear factor(NF)-κB.CONCLUSION:These results suggest that SSM plays a protective role during the development of AP and pancreatitis associated lung injury via deactivating c-Jun NH2-terminal kinase,p38 and NF-κB. | Il-Joo Jo Gi-Sang Bae Kyoung-Chel Park Sun Bok Choi Won-Seok Jung Su-Young Jung Jung-Hee Cho Mee-Ok Choi Ho-Joon Song Sung-Joo Park | 2013 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2013,19,10: | 6 |

Although 3 D printing was developed in the 1980 s and the technology has found widespread industrial applications for production from automotive parts to machine tools,its application in pharmaceutical area is still limited. However,the potential of 3 D printing in the pharmaceutical industry is now being recognized. The ability of 3 D printing to produce medications to exact specifications tailored to the needs of individual patients has indicated the possibility of developing personalized medicines. The technology allows dosage forms to be precisely printed in various shapes,sizes and textures that are difficult to produce using traditional techniques. However,there are various challenges associated with the proper application of3 D printing in the pharmaceutical sector which should be overcome to exploit the scope of this technology. | 10 | High-risk esophageal varices in patients treated with locoregional therapy for hepatocellular carcinoma:Assessment with liver computed tomography显示文摘AIM:To assess the diagnostic performance of followup liver computed tomography(CT) for the detection of high-risk esophageal varices in patients treated with locoregional therapy for hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC).METHODS:We prospectively enrolled 100 patients with cirrhosis who underwent transcatheter arterial chemoembolization,radiofrequency ablation or both procedures for HCCs.All patients underwent upper endoscopy and subsequently liver CT.Three radiologists independently evaluated the presence of high-risk esophageal varices with transverse images alone and with three orthogonal multiplanar reformation(MPR) images,respectively.With endoscopic grading as the reference standard,diagnostic performance was assessed by using receiver operating characteristic(ROC) curve analysis.RESULTS:The diagnostic performances(areas under the ROC curve) of three observers with transverse images alone were 0.947 ± 0.031,0.969 ± 0.024,and 0.916 ± 0.038,respectively.The mean sensitivity,specificity,positive predicative value(PPV),and negative predicative value(NPV) with transverse images alone were 90.1%,86.39%,70.9%,and 95.9%,respectively.The diagnostic performances,mean sensitivity,specificity,PPV,and NPV with three orthogonal MPR images(0.965 ± 0.025,0.959 ± 0.027,0.938 ± 0.033,91.4%,89.5%,76.3%,and 96.6%,respectively) were not superior to corresponding values with transverse images alone(P > 0.05),except for the mean specificity(P = 0.039).CONCLUSION:Our results showed excellent diagnostic performance,sensitivity and NPV to detect high-risk esophageal varices on follow-up liver CT after locoregional therapy for HCC. | Hyojin Kim Dongil Choi Joon Hyeok Lee Soon Jin Lee Hangi Jo Geum-Youn Gwak Kwang Cheol Koh Moon Seok Choi Seonwoo Kim | 2012 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2012,18,35: | 4 |

| 12 | CO2/CH4 separation using inside coated thin film composite hollow fiber membranes prepared by interfacial polymerization显示文摘Carbon dioxide(CO_2) is greenhouse gas which originates primarily as a main combustion product of biogas and landfill gas. To separate this gas, an inside coated thin film composite(TFC) hollow fiber membrane was developed by interfacial polymerization between 1,3–cyclohexanebis–methylamine(CHMA) and trimesoyl chloride(TMC). ATR-FTIR, SEM and AFM were used to characterize the active thin layer formed inside the PSf hollow fiber. The separation behavior of the CHMA-TMC/PSf membrane was scrutinized by studying various effects like feed gas pressure and temperature. Furthermore, the influence of CHMA concentration and TMC concentration on membrane morphology and performance were investigated. As a result, it was found that mutually the CHMA concentration and TMC concentration play key roles in determining membrane morphology and performance. Moreover, the CHMA-TMC/PSf composite membrane showed good CO_2/CH_4 separation performance. For CO_2/CH_4 mixture gas(30/70 by volume) test, the membrane(PD1 prepared by CHMA 1.0% and TMC 0.5%) showed a CO_2 permeance of 25 GPU and the best CO_2/CH_4 selectivity of 28 at stage cut of 0.1. | 13 | Adoption of wide-bandgap microcrystalline silicon oxide and dual buffers for semitransparent solar cells in building-integrated photovoltaic window system显示文摘We focused on developing penetration-type semitransparent thin-film solar cells(STSCs) using hydrogenated amorphous Si(a-Si:H) for a building-integrated photovoltaic(BIPV) window system. Instead of conventional p-type a-Si:H, p-type hydrogenated microcrystalline Si oxide(p-μc-SiOx:H) was introduced for a wide-bandgap and conductive window layer. For these purposes, we tuned the CO2/SiH4 flow ratio(R) during p-μc-SiOx:H deposition. The film crystallinity decreased from 50% to 13% as R increased from 0.2 to 1.2. At the optimized R of 0.6, the quantum efficiency was improved under short wavelengths by the suppression of p-type layer parasitic absorption. The series resistance was well controlled to avoid fill factor loss at R = 0.6. Furthermore, we introduced dual buffers comprising p-a-SiOx:H/i-a-Si:H at the p/i interface to alleviate interfacial energy-band mismatch. | 16 | Gender differences in adult traumatic brain injury according to the Glasgow coma scale:A multicenter descriptive study显示文摘Purpose:Patients’gender,which can be one of the most important determinants of traumatic brain injury(TBI)outcomes,is also likely to interact with many other outcome variables of TBI.This multicenter descriptive study investigated gender differences in epidemiological,clinical,treatment,mortality,and variable characteristics in adult TBI patients.Methods:The selection criteria were defined as patients who had been diagnosed with TBI and were admitted to the hospital between January 1,2016 and December 31,2018.A total of 4468 adult TBI patients were enrolled at eight University Hospitals.Based on the list of enrolled patients,the medical records of the patients were reviewed and they were registered online at each hospital.The registered patients were classified into three groups according to the Glasgow coma scale(GCS)score:mild(13-15),moderate(9-12),and severe(3-8),and the differences between men and women in each group were investigated.The risk factors of moderated and severe TBI compared to mild TBI were also investigated.Results:The study included 3075 men and 1393 women and the proportion of total males was 68.8%.Among all the TBI patients,there were significant differences between men and women in age,past history,and GCS score.While the mild and severe TBI groups showed significant differences in age,past history,and clinical symptoms,the moderate TBI group showed significant differences in age,past history,cause of justice,and diagnosis.Conclusion:To the best of our knowledge,this multicenter study is the first to focus on gender differences of adult patients with TBI in Korea.This study shows significant differences between men and women in many aspects of adult TBI.Therefore,gender differences should be strongly considered in TBI studies. | Ki Seong Eom Jang Hun Kim Sang Hoon Yoon Seong-jong Lee Kyung-Jae Park Sung-Kon Ha Jin-gyu Choi Kwang-Wook Jo JongYeon Kim Suk Hyung Kang Jong-Hyun Kim | 2021 | Chinese Journal of Traumatology2021,24,6: | 3 |

| 20 | Rapid species identification of pathogenic bacteria from a minute quantity exploiting three-dimensional quantitative phase imaging and artificial neural network显示文摘The healthcare industry is in dire need of rapid microbial identification techniques for treating microbial infections.Microbial infections are a major healthcare issue worldwide,as these widespread diseases often develop into deadly symptoms.While studies have shown that an early appropriate antibiotic treatment significantly reduces the mortality of an infection,this effective treatment is difficult to practice.The main obstacle to early appropriate antibiotic treatments is the long turnaround time of the routine microbial identification,which includes time-consuming sample growth.Here,we propose a microscopy-based framework that identifies the pathogen from single to few cells.Our framework obtains and exploits the morphology of the limited sample by incorporating three-dimensional quantitative phase imaging and an artificial neural network.We demonstrate the identification of 19 bacterial species that cause bloodstream infections,achieving an accuracy of 82.5%from an individual bacterial cell or cluster.This performance,comparable to that of the gold standard mass spectroscopy under a sufficient amount of sample,underpins the effectiveness of our framework in clinical applications.Furthermore,our accuracy increases with multiple measurements,reaching 99.9%with seven different measurements of cells or clusters.We believe that our framework can serve as a beneficial advisory tool for clinicians during the initial treatment of infections. | Geon Kim Daewoong Ahn Minhee Kang Jinho Park DongHun Ryu YoungJu Jo Jinyeop Song Jea Sung Ryu Gunho Choi Hyun Jung Chung Kyuseok Kim Doo Ryeon Chung In Young Yoo Hee Jae Huh Hyun-seok Min Nam Yong Lee YongKeun Park | 2022 | Light(Science & Applications)2022,11,7: | 2 |
