2N-Acetyltransferase 2 genetic polymorphisms and risk of colorectal cancer显示文摘AIM:To investigate the possible association between meat intake, cigarette smoking and N-acetyltransferase 2 (NAT2) genetic polymorphisms on colorectal cancer (CRC) risk.METHODS:Patients with CRC were matched for gender and age to healthy controls.Meat intake and cigarette smoking were assessed using a specific frequency questionnaire.DNA was extracted from peripheral blood and the genotypes of the polymorphism were assessed by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism.Five NAT2 alleles were studied (WT,M1,M2,M3 and M4) using specific digestion enzymes.RESULTS:A total of 147 patients with colorectal cancer (76 women and 90 men with colon cancer) and 212 controls were studied. The mean age of the two groups was 62 years.More than half the subjects (59.8% in the case group and 51.9% in the control group) were NAT2 slow acetylators. The odds ratio for colorectal cancer was 1.38 (95% CI:0.90-2.12) in slow acetylators.Although the number of women was small (n=76 in the case group),the cancer risk was found to be lower in intermediate (W/Mx) acetylators [odds ratio (OR):0.55,95% confidence interval (95% CI):0.29-1.02].This difference was not observed in men (OR:0.56,95% CI:0.16-2.00).Among NAT2 fast acetylators (W/W or W/Mx),meat consumption more than 3 times a week increased the risk of colorectal cancer (OR:2.05,95% CI:1.01-4.16).In contrast, cigarette smoking increased the risk of CRC among slow acetylators (OR:1.97,95% CI:1.02-3.79).CONCLUSION:The risk of CRC was higher among fast acetylators who reported a higher meat intake.Slow NAT2 acetylation was associated with an increased risk of CRC.Tiago Donizetti da Silva Aledson Vitor Felipe Jacqueline Miranda de Lima Celina Tizuko Fujiyama Oshima Nora Manoukian Forones 2011World Journal of Gastroenterology2011,17,6:3
3Priorities and needs for research on urban interventions targeting vector-borne diseases: rapid review of scoping and systematic reviews显示文摘This paper highlights the critical importance of evidence on vector-borne diseases(VBD)prevention and control interventions in urban settings when assessing current and future needs, with a view to setting policy priorities that promote inclusive and equitable urban health services.Research should produce knowledge about policies and interventions that are intended to control and prevent VBDs at the population level and to reduce inequities.Such interventions include policy, program, and resource distribution approaches that address the social determinants of health and exert influence at organizational and system levels.Clara Bermudez-Tamayo Olive Mukamana Mabel Carabali Lyda Osorio Florence Fournet Kounbobr Roch Dabiré Celina Turchi Marteli Adolfo Contreras Valéry Ridde 2016Infectious Diseases of Poverty2016,5,1:3
4Gamma-aminobutyric acid(GABA) promotes recovery from spinal cord injury in lampreys: role of GABA receptors and perspective on the translation to mammals显示文摘In mammals, spinal cord injury (SCI) is a devastating event that can lead to a permanent loss of motor, sensory and autonomic functions below the site of injury. In the last years, the role of different neurotransmitter systems on regeneration and recovery from SCI has been deciphered. For example, studies in lampreys have shown that neurotransmitters play a key role in modulating the survival and regeneration of brainstem descending neurons after SCI (Romaus-Sanjurjo et al., 2018;Sobrido-Camean et al., 2018).Daniel Romaus-Sanjurjo María Celina Rodicio Antón Barreiro-Iglesias 2019Neural Regeneration Research2019,14,10:3
5Scoping review on vector-borne diseases in urban areas:transmission dynamics, vectorial capacity and co-infection显示文摘Background:Transmission dynamics, vectorial capacity, and co-infections have substantial impacts on vector-borne diseases(VBDs)affecting urban and suburban populations.Reviewing key factors can provide insight into priority research areas and offer suggestions for potential interventions.Main body:Through a scoping review,we identify knowledge gaps on transmission dynamics, vectorial capacity, and co-infections regarding VBDs in urban areas.Peer-reviewed and grey literature published between 2000 and 2016 was searched. We screened abstracts and full texts to select studies.Using an extraction grid,we retrieved general data, results, lessons learned and recommendations, future research avenues, and practice implications. We classified studies by VBD and country/continent and identified relevant knowledge gaps.Of 773 articles selected for full-text screening,50 were included in the review:23 based on research in the Americas,15 in Asia,10 in Africa, and one each in Europe and Australia. The largest body of evidence concerning VBD epidemiology in urban areas concerned dengue and malaria.Other arboviruses covered included chikungunya and West Nile virus, other parasitic diseases such as leishmaniasis and trypanosomiasis, and bacterial rickettsiosis and plague. Most articles retrieved in our review combined transmission dynamics and vectorial capacity;only two combined transmission dynamics and co-infection.The review identified significant knowledge gaps on the role of asymptomatic individuals, the effects of co-infection and other host factors, and the impacts of climatic, environmental, and socioeconomic factors on VBD transmission in urban areas.Limitations included the trade-off from narrowing the search strategy(missing out on classical modelling studies),a lack of studies on co-infections,most studies being only descriptive, and few offering concrete public health recommendations.More research is needed on transmission risk in homes and workplaces, given increasingly dynamic and mobile populations. The lack of studies on co-infection hampers monitoring of infections transmitted by the same vector. Conclusions:Strengthening VBD surveillance and control, particularly in asymptomatic cases and mobile populations,as well as using early warning tools to predict increasing transmission, were key strategies identified for public health policy and practice.Marcus Eder Fanny Cortes Noemia Teixeira de Siqueira Filha Giovanny Vinicius Araujo de Franca Stephanie Degroote Cynthia Braga Valery Ridde Celina Maria Turchi Martelli 2018Infectious Diseases of Poverty2018,7,1:2
