8Effectiveness of a fixed-depth sensor deployed from a buoy to estimate water-column cyanobacterial biomass depends on wind speed显示文摘Water quality sondes have the advantage of containing multiple sensors,extended deployment times,high temporal resolution,and telecommunication with stakeholder accessible data portals.However,sondes that are part of buoy deployments often suffer from typically being fixed at one depth.Because water treatment plants are interested in water quality at a depth of the water intake and other stakeholders(ex.boaters and swimmers)are interested in the surface,we examined whether a fixed depth of approximately 1 m could cause over-or under-estimation of cyanobacterial biomass.We sampled the vertical distribution of cyanobacteria adjacent to a water quality sonde buoy in the western basin of Lake Erie during the summers of 2015–2017.A comparison of buoy cyanobacteria RFU(Relative Fluorescence Unit)at 1 m to cyanobacteria chlorophyll a(chla)measured throughout the water column showed occurrences when the buoy both under and overestimated the cyanobacteria chl a at specific depths.Largest differences between buoy measurements and at-depth grab samples occurred during low wind speeds(<4.5 m/sec)because low winds allowed cyanobacteria to accumulate at the surface above the buoy’s sonde.Higher wind speeds(>4.5 m/sec)resulted in better agreement between the buoy and at-depth measurements.Averaging wind speeds 12 hr before sample collection decreased the difference between the buoy and at-depth samples for high wind speeds but not low speeds.We suggest that sondes should be placed at a depth of interest for the appropriate stakeholder group or deploy sondes with the ability to sample at various depths.Justin D.Chaffin Douglas D.Kane Alex Johnson 2020Journal of Environmental Sciences2020,32,7:1

18Persistent diarrhea with petechial rash-unusual pattern of light chain amyloidosis deposition on skin and gastrointestinal biopsies:A case report显示文摘BACKGROUND Amyloidosis is a rare disease characterized by extracellular deposition of misfolded protein aggregated into insoluble fibrils.Gastrointestinal involvement in systemic amyloidosis is common,but is often subclinical or presents as vague and nonspecific symptoms.It is rare for gastrointestinal symptoms to be the main presenting symptom in patients with systemic amyloidosis,causing it to be undiagnosed until late-stage disease.CASE SUMMARY A 53 year-old man with diarrhea,hematochezia,and weight loss presented to a community hospital.Colonoscopy with biopsy at that time was suspicious for Crohn disease.Due to worsening symptoms including nausea,vomiting,and a new petechial rash,an abdominal fat pad biopsy was done.The biopsy showed papillary and adnexal dermal amyloid deposition,in a pattern usually seen with cutaneous amyloidosis.However,Cytokeratin 5/6 was negative,excluding cutaneous amyloidosis.The patterns of nodular amyloidosis,subcutaneous amyloid deposits and perivascular amyloid were not seen.Periodic Acid-Schiff stain was negative for lipoid proteinosis,Congo red was positive for apple green birefringence on polarization and amyloid typing confirmed amyloid light chain amyloidosis.Repeat endoscopic biopsies of the gastrointestinal tract showed amyloid deposition from the esophagus to the rectum,in a pattern usually seen in serum amyloid A in the setting of chronic inflammatory diseases,including severe inflammatory bowel disease.Bone marrow biopsy showed kappa-restricted plasma cell neoplasm.CONCLUSION Described is an unusual presentation of primary systemic amyloidosis,highlighting the risk of misdiagnosis with subsequent significant organ dysfunction and high mortality.Shawna E Bilton Nikhil Shah Diana Dougherty Sarah Simpson Alex Holliday Farhad Sahebjam Douglas J Grider 2022World Journal of Clinical Cases2022,10,28:0
19Effects of dietary macronutrients and body composition on glucose homeostasis in mice显示文摘As a major health issue,obesity is linked with elevated risk of type 2 diabetes.However,whether disrupted glucose homeostasis is due to altered body composition alone,or whether dietary macronutrients play an additional role,independent of their impact on body composition,remains unclear.We investigated the associations between macronutrients,body composition,blood hormones and glucose homeostasis.We fed C57BL/6N mice 29 different diets with variable macronutrients for 12 weeks.After 10 weeks,intraperitoneal glucose tolerance tests were performed.Generalized linear models were generated to evaluate the impacts of macronutrients,body composition and blood hormones on glucose homeostasis.The area under the glucose curve(AUC)was strongly associated with body fat mass,but not dietary macronutrients.AUC was significantly associated with fasting insulin levels.Six genes from transcriptomic analysis of epididymal white adipose tissue and subcutaneous white adipose tissue were significantly associated with AUC.These genes may encode secreted proteins that play important previously unanticipated roles in glucose homeostasis.Sumei Hu Jacques Togo Lu Wang Yingga Wu Dengbao Yang Yanchao Xu Li Li Baoguo Li Min Li Jianbo Li Guanlin Wang Xueying Zhang Chaoqun Niu Mohsen Mazidi Alex Douglas John R.Speakman 2021National Science Review2021,8,1:0
