1Circulation anomalies associated with interannual variation of early- and late-summer precipitation in Northeast China显示文摘Summer rainfall is vital for crops in Northeast China. In this study, we investigated large-scale circulation anomalies related to monthly summer rainfall in Northeast China using European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecast ERA-40 reanalysis data and monthly rainfall data from 79 stations in Northeast China. The results show that the interannual variation in rainfall over Northeast China is mainly dominated by a cold vortex in early summer (May-June) and by the East Asian summer monsoon in late summer (July-August). In early summer, corresponding to increased rainfall in Northeast China, an anomalous cyclonic anomaly tilted westward with height appears to the northwest and cold vortices occur frequently. In late summer, the rainfall anomaly is mainly controlled by a northward shift of the local East Asian jet stream in the upper troposphere and the northwest extension of the western Pacific subtropical high (WPSH) in the lower troposphere. The enhanced southwesterly anomaly in the west of the WPSH transports more moisture into Northeast China and results in more rainfall. 2Predictability of the Summer East Asian Upper-Tropospheric Westerly Jet in ENSEMBLES Multi-Model Forecasts显示文摘The interannual variation of the East Asian upper-tropospheric westerly jet(EAJ) significantly affects East Asian climate in summer. Identifying its performance in model prediction may provide us another viewpoint,from the perspective of uppertropospheric circulation,to understand the predictability of summer climate anomalies in East Asia. This study presents a comprehensive assessment of year-to-year variability of the EAJ based on retrospective seasonal forecasts,initiated from1 May,in the five state-of-the-art coupled models from ENSEMBLES during 1960–2005. It is found that the coupled models show certain capability in describing the interannual meridional displacement of the EAJ,which reflects the models' performance in the first leading empirical orthogonal function(EOF) mode. This capability is mainly shown over the region south of the EAJ axis. Additionally,the models generally capture well the main features of atmospheric circulation and SST anomalies related to the interannual meridional displacement of the EAJ. Further analysis suggests that the predicted warm SST anomalies in the concurrent summer over the tropical eastern Pacific and northern Indian Ocean are the two main sources of the potential prediction skill of the southward shift of the EAJ. 3Intercomparison of the Impacts of Four Summer Teleconnections over Eurasia on East Asian Rainfall显示文摘East Asian summer climate is strongly affected by extratropical circulation disturbances. In this study, impacts of four atmospheric teleconnections over Eurasia on East Asian summer rainfall are investigated using National Centers for Environmental Prediction/National Center for Atmospheric Research(NCEP/NCAR) reanalysis data and Climatic Research Unit(CRU) land precipitation data during 1979–2009. The four teleconnections include the Scandinavian(SCA), the Polar/Eurasian(PEU), the East Atlantic/Western Russian(EAWR), and the circumglobal teleconnection(CGT). Moreover, the related changes of lower-tropospheric circulation are explored, specifically, the low pressure over northern East Asia(NEAL)and the subtropical high over the western North Pacific(WNPSH). The results presented are in the positive phase. The PEU and SCA induce significant negative anomalies in North China rainfall(NCR), while the CGT induces significant positive anomalies. In the past three decades, the PEU and SCA explain more than 20% of the variance in NCR, twice that explained by the CGT, suggesting a more important role of the former two teleconnections in NCR variation than the latter one. Meanwhile, the PEU and SCA reduce rainfall in Northeast China and South Korea, respectively, and the CGT enhances rainfall in Japan. The rainfall responses are attributed to the SCA-induced northward shift of the NEAL, and PEU-induced northward shift and weakening of the NEAL, respectively. For the CGT, the dipole pattern of rainfall anomalies between North China and Japan is affected by both westward extension of the NEAL and northwestward expansion of the WNPSH. 4Improving Multi-model Ensemble Probabilistic Prediction of Yangtze River Valley Summer Rainfall显示文摘Seasonal prediction of summer rainfall over the Yangtze River valley(YRV) is valuable for agricultural and industrial production and freshwater resource management in China, but remains a major challenge. Earlier multi-model ensemble(MME) prediction schemes for summer rainfall over China focus on single-value prediction, which cannot provide the necessary uncertainty information, while commonly-used ensemble schemes for probability density function(PDF) prediction are not adapted to YRV summer rainfall prediction. In the present study, an MME PDF prediction scheme is proposed based on the ENSEMBLES hindcasts. It is similar to the earlier Bayesian ensemble prediction scheme, but with optimization of ensemble members and a revision of the variance modeling of the likelihood function. The optimized ensemble members are regressed YRV summer rainfall with factors selected from model outputs of synchronous 500-h Pa geopotential height as predictors. The revised variance modeling of the likelihood function is a simple linear regression with ensemble spread as the predictor. 5Revisiting the Second EOF Mode of Interannual Variation in Summer Rainfall over East China显示文摘The second EOF(EOF2) mode of interannual variation in summer rainfall over East China is characterized by inverse rainfall changes between South China(SC) and the Yellow River-Huaihe River valleys(YH).However,understanding of the EOF2 mode is still limited.In this study,the authors identify that the EOF2 mode physically depicts the latitudinal variation of the climatological summer-mean rainy belt along the Yangtze River valley(YRRB),based on a 160-station rainfall dataset in China for the period 1951-2011.The latitudinal variation of the YRRB is mostly attributed to two different rainfall patterns:one reflects the seesaw(SS) rainfall changes between the YH and SC(SS pattern),and the other features rainfall anomalies concentrated in SC only(SC pattern).Corresponding to a southward shift of the YRRB,the SS pattern,with above-normal rainfall in SC and below-normal rainfall in the YH,is related to a cyclonic anomaly centered over the SC-East China Sea region,with a northerly anomaly blowing from the YH to SC;while the SC pattern,with above-normal rainfall in SC,is related to an anticyclonic anomaly over the western North Pacific(WNP),corresponding to an enhanced southwest monsoon over SC.The cyclonic anomaly,related to the SS pattern,is induced by a near-barotropic eastward propagating wave train along the Asian upper-tropospheric westerly jet,originating from the mid-high latitudes of the North Atlantic.The anticyclonic anomaly,for the SC pattern,is related to suppressed rainfall in the WNP.Zhongda LIN Qin SU Riyu LU 2016Advances in Atmospheric Sciences2016,33,1:3
6Intermodel Diversity in the Zonal Location of the Climatological East Asian Westerly Jet Core in Summer and Association with Rainfall over East Asia in CMIP5 Models显示文摘The East Asian westerly jet(EAJ), an important midlatitude circulation of the East Asian summer monsoon system,plays a crucial role in affecting summer rainfall over East Asia. The multimodel ensemble of current coupled models can generally capture the intensity and location of the climatological summer EAJ. However, individual models still exhibit large discrepancies. This study investigates the intermodel diversity in the longitudinal location of the simulated summer EAJ climatology in the present-day climate and its implications for rainfall over East Asia based on 20 CMIP5 models. The results show that the zonal location of the simulated EAJ core is located over either the midlatitude Asian continent or the western North Pacific(WNP) in different models. The zonal shift of the EAJ core depicts a major intermodel diversity of the simulated EAJ climatology. The westward retreat of the EAJ core is related to a warmer mid–upper tropospheric temperature in the midlatitudes, with a southwest–northeast tilt extending from Southwest Asia to Northeast Asia and the northern North Pacific, induced partially by the simulated stronger rainfall climatology over South Asia. 7Simulated Relationship between Wintertime ENSO and East Asian Summer Rainfall: From CMIP3 to CMIP6显示文摘El Niño-Southern Oscillation(ENSO)events have a strong influence on East Asian summer rainfall(EASR).This paper investigates the simulated ENSO-EASR relationship in CMIP6 models and compares the results with those in CMIP3 and CMIP5 models.In general,the CMIP6 models show almost no appreciable progress in representing the ENSO-EASR relationship compared with the CMIP5 models.The correlation coefficients in the CMIP6 models are relatively smaller and exhibit a slightly greater intermodel diversity than those in the CMIP5 models.Three physical processes related to the delayed effect of ENSO on EASR are further analyzed.Results show that,firstly,the relationships between ENSO and the tropical Indian Ocean(TIO)sea surface temperature(SST)in the CMIP6 models are more realistic,stronger,and have less intermodel diversity than those in the CMIP3 and CMIP5 models.Secondly,the teleconnections between the TIO SST and Philippine Sea convection(PSC)in the CMIP6 models are almost the same as those in the CMIP5 models,and stronger than those in the CMIP3 models.Finally,the CMIP3,CMIP5,and CMIP6 models exhibit essentially identical capabilities in representing the PSC-EASR relationship.Almost all the three generations of models underestimate the ENSO-EASR,TIO SST-PSC,and PSC-EASR relationships.Moreover,almost all the CMIP6 models that successfully capture the significant TIO SST-PSC relationship realistically simulate the ENSO-EASR relationship and vice versa,which is,however,not the case in the CMIP5 models.Yuanhai FU Zhongda LIN Tao WANG 2021Advances in Atmospheric Sciences2021,38,2:3
8CMIP6模式对东亚夏季西风急流的模拟能力改进分析显示文摘东亚高空西风急流(简称急流)对东亚夏季降水有着重要影响,因此,评估气候系统模式对急流的模拟能力对理解东亚气候变化至关重要。本文利用21个CMIP6气候系统模式历史气候模拟试验数据,结合NCEP和GPCP再分析资料,评估了CMIP6模式对现代(1986-2005年)急流气候态和年际变率的模拟能力,并与CMIP5模式模拟结果进行了对比。结果表明,CMIP6模式模拟的200 hPa纬向风的空间分布特征更加真实,沿急流方向的偏差更小。在CMIP6模式中,急流中心位置几乎与观测一致,但只有约三分之二的CMIP5模式能模拟出急流中心位置。CMIP6模式模拟的急流强度也更接近于观测值,并且模式间不确定性减小。另外,CMIP6模式也改进了对急流经向位移年际变率的模拟能力,因而模拟的急流与东亚夏季降水的相关关系更强。总体而言,相对于CMIP5模式,CMIP6模式明显改进了对急流的模拟效果。FU Yuanhai LIN Zhongda GUO Dong 2020Atmospheric and Oceanic Science Letters2020,13,6:2

11Assessment of Crop Yield in China Simulated by Thirteen Global Gridded Crop Models显示文摘Global gridded crop models(GGCMs) have been broadly applied to assess the impacts of climate and environmental change and adaptation on agricultural production. China is a major grain producing country, but thus far only a few studies have assessed the performance of GGCMs in China, and these studies mainly focused on the average and interannual variability of national and regional yields. Here, a systematic national-and provincial-scale evaluation of the simulations by13 GGCMs [12 from the GGCM Intercomparison(GGCMI) project, phase 1, and CLM5-crop] of the yields of four crops(wheat, maize, rice, and soybean) in China during 1980–2009 was carried out through comparison with crop yield statistics collected from the National Bureau of Statistics of China. Results showed that GGCMI models generally underestimate the national yield of rice but overestimate it for the other three crops, while CLM5-crop can reproduce the national yields of wheat, maize, and rice well. Most GGCMs struggle to simulate the spatial patterns of crop yields. In terms of temporal variability, GGCMI models generally fail to capture the observed significant increases, but some can skillfully simulate the interannual variability. Conversely, CLM5-crop can represent the increases in wheat, maize, and rice, but works less well in simulating the interannual variability. At least one model can skillfully reproduce the temporal variability of yields in the top-10 producing provinces in China, albeit with a few exceptions. 12Human Machine Interface with Wearable Electronics Using Biodegradable Triboelectric Films for Calligraphy Practice and Correction显示文摘Letter handwriting,especially stroke correction,is of great importance for recording languages and expressing and exchanging ideas for individual behavior and the public.In this study,a biodegradable and conductive carboxymethyl chitosan-silk fibroin(CSF)film is prepared to design wearable triboelectric nanogenerator(denoted as CSF-TENG),which outputs of V_(oc)≈165 V,I_(sc)≈1.4μA,and Q_(sc)≈72 mW cm^(−2).Further,in vitro biodegradation of CSF film is performed through trypsin and lysozyme.The results show that trypsin and lysozyme have stable and favorable biodegradation properties,removing 63.1%of CSF film after degrading for 11 days.Further,the CSF-TENG-based human-machine interface(HMI)is designed to promptly track writing steps and access the accuracy of letters,resulting in a straightforward communication media of human and machine.The CSF-TENG-based HMI can automatically recognize and correct three representative letters(F,H,and K),which is benefited by HMI system for data processing and analysis.The CSF-TENG-based HMI can make decisions for the next stroke,highlighting the stroke in advance by replacing it with red,which can be a candidate for calligraphy practice and correction.Finally,various demonstrations are done in real-time to achieve virtual and real-world controls including writing,vehicle movements,and healthcare.Shen Shen Jia Yi Zhongda Sun Zihao Guo Tianyiyi He Liyun Ma Huimin Li Jiajia Fu Chengkuo Lee Zhong Lin Wang 2022Nano-Micro Letters2022,14,12:0
