| 1 | Antimicrobial susceptibility patterns of Streptococcus pneumoniae over 6 years at Gondar University Hospital, Northwest Ethiopia显示文摘Objective:To assess the magnitude and antimicrobial susceptibility patterns ofStreptococcus pneumoniaeisolates from various clinical specimens. Methods:A record based on retrospectivestudy was conducted at Gondar University Teaching Hospital from September 2007 to January 2012.All patients who visited Gondar University Hospital and provided clinical specimens(body fluids, discharge, swab and blood)for routine bacteriological culturing and antimicrobial susceptibilitytesting were taken for analysis.Clinical specimens were processed for bacterial culture accordingto the standard procedures.Antimicrobial susceptibility test for isolated organisms was doneusing agar disk diffusion method. The data were entered and analyzed using SPSS software version16 package. Results:One hundred and fifty threeStreptococcus pneumoniaewere isolated frompatients who visited Gondar University Teaching Hospital bacteriology laboratory for culture.Majority of the pneumococcal isolates were from inpatients[111(72.5%)],and 74(48.4%)were frombody fluids.Out of the total isolates,93(61%)were found to be resistant to at least one antibioticused for susceptibility testing.Forty eight(43.2%)of the isolates were multi-drug resistant(resistantto two or more drugs). The resistance rate noted for both ciprofloxacin 17(11.1%)and ceftriaxone15(9.8%)were alarming. Conclusions:High proportions of the isolates tend to be increasinglyresistant to the commonly prescribed drugs. The recommended drug of choice like ciprofloxacinand ceftriaxone were found to be less susceptible in the study area.Based on the findings, wetherefore recommend that antimicrobial agents should be inspected for acceptable activity beforethey are prescribed and administered empirically.Further study with a better design and surveyof antimicrobial susceptibility at large scale shoule be performed to draw advanced information. | Belay Anagaw Mucheye Gezachew Fantahun Biadgelgene Berhanu Anagaw Tariku Geleshe Birke Taddese Birhanu Getie Mengistu Endris Andargachew Mulu Chandrashekhar Unakal | 2013 | Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Biomedicine2013,3,7: | 3 |

| 13 | Prevalence and determinants of active trachoma among preschool-aged children in Dembia District,Northwest Ethiopia显示文摘Background:Trachoma is an infectious eye disease caused by Chlamydia trachomatis, which is the leading infectious cause of blindness worldwide. In areas where trachoma is endemic, active trachoma is common among preschool-aged children, with varying magnitude. This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of active trachoma and associated risk factors among preschool-aged children in Dembia District, northwest Ethiopia. Methods:A community-based cross-sectional survey was conducted among preschool-aged children of northwest Ethiopia.Multistage systematic random sampling was used to select 695 subjects.Trained clinical optometrists subjected each child to an ocular examination and assessed the presence of active trachoma.Face to face interview using pretested and structured questionnaire were conducted to collect data on possible risk factors.Trachoma cases were graded following a World Health Organization simplified grading scheme. All statistical analysis was carried out using the SPSS software version 20.Adjusted odds ratios(aORs)with 95%confidence intervals(CIs)were used to identify factors associated with active trachoma. Results:Of the 681 preschool-aged children studied,18%(95%CI:15.4%-21.1%)had a prevalence of active trachoma.Children who had clean faces(absence of nasal and ocular discharges)had a lower chance of having active trachoma[aOR=0.55,95%CI:0.37-0.82].The odds of having active trachoma decreased with an increase in the distance to a water point[aOR=0.51,95%CI:0.33-0.78].Similarly,no or poor utilization of liquid waste disposal in the child’s household was associated with an increased chance of having active trachoma[aOR=3.83,95%CI:1.26-11.61].Conclusion:The prevalence of active trachoma in these preschool-aged children was found to be high and needs special interventions that focus on educating families about proper face washing, liquid waste disposal, and improving safe water supply near the households. | Ayanaw Tsega Ferede Abel Fekadu Dadi Amare Tariku Akilew Awoke Adane | 2017 | Infectious Diseases of Poverty2017,6,1: | 1 |

| 19 | The Contending Claim Over Abyei by Sudan and South Sudan:Challenges Ahead显示文摘This article focuses on examining entangled factors that complicate the claim over Abyei and have therebyhindered any peaceful settlement of the dispute on the county. Many works of literature that presented the conflictin Abyei as natural resource conflict or identity-driven within a broader picture of conflicts in Sudan are factuallyflawed and poorly explained the nature and causes of the conflict. This paper contends that multiplicity of factorshas reinforced each other, thus these factors in unison created a stalemate and continuing claim over Abyei. Inexamining these interwoven factors, the paper employed a qualitative approach to conduct the study. Both primaryand secondary data sources were used adequately. Various academic pieces of literature, researches, and conferencereports have been used as secondary data sources. Key informant interviews were used to gather primary data totest secondary sources. Hence, the study comes up with three basic findings. First, claim over Abyei has beensustained by the elites’ manipulation of identity for their political and economic goals that hinder peacefulco-existence among communities in Abyei. Second, the competition over resources chiefly oil and locally, pastureand water complicated already fragile and tense relation by alluring national actors that even more protractedconflict on the ground to control these resources. Finally, the double standard in U.S. policy towards Abyei, by andlarge, helps Khartoum to continue its obstruction tactics to maintain the status quo. | Diriba Mangasha Dabala Tariku Raga Lencho | 2020 | International Relations and Diplomacy2020,8,6: | 0 |
| 20 | Molluscicidal effect of Achyranthes aspera L.(Amaranthaceae)aqueous extract on adult snails of Biomphalaria pfeifferi and Lymnaea natalensis显示文摘Background:Intestinal schistosomiasis caused by Schistosoma mansoni is a wide spread disease in most parts of Ethiopian highlands.Snail control is one major strategy in schistosomiasis control. The use of molluscicidal plant products is becoming interesting due to their environmental friendliness, accessibility and easy application. This research is aimed to evaluate the molluscicidal effect of Achyranthes aspera on Biomphalaria pfeifferi and Lymnaea natalensis snails, which are of great medical and veterinary importance in Ethiopia. Methods:Adult B.pfeifferi snails were exposed to the various concentrations of A.aspera aqueous leaf extract for 24,48 and 72 h.Similarly, adult L.natalensis snails were exposed to the extract for 24 h.Mortality data were analyzed using probit regression model.Phytochemical content of the plant was analyzed using standard screening methods. Results:The plant’s molluscicidal effect on the two snail species was demonstrated. The 24 h LC50 and LC90 values against L.natalensis were 69.5 and 93.9 ppm respectively. In the 24,48 and 72 h exposure of B.pfeifferi, the LC50 values were 72.4,69.9,64.7 ppm and the LC90 were 96.5,93.8,92.8 ppm, respectively. The phytochemical screening tests indicated presence of saponins. Conclusion:From the findings of this study,A.aspera has a molluscicidal potential. The result provides a useful foundation for further in-depth studies to ensure its wider applicability in different water bodies and evaluate its toxic effects on non-target species. | Belayhun Mandefro Seid Tiku Mereta Yinebeb Tariku Argaw Ambelu | 2017 | Infectious Diseases of Poverty2017,6,1: | 0 |
