| 1 | Comparative study of polyhydroxyalkanoates production from acidified and anaerobically treated brewery wastewater using enriched mixed microbial culture显示文摘The production of polyhydroxyalkanoates(PHA) from wastewaters using microbial mixed cultures(MMC) has been attracting increased interest because of PHA's biodegradability characteristics. Production of PHA by an MMC enriched with PHA-accumulating bacteria was compared using anaerobically treated and acidified brewery wastewaters under various feeding strategies, namely pulse and batch feed addition. To obtain an enriched MMC, a sequencing batch reactor was inoculated with activated sludge fed with acetate and subjected to aerobic dynamic feeding. The enriched MMC was able to accumulate PHA up to 72.6% of cell dry weight(CDW) with pulse addition of acetate controlled by the dissolved oxygen(DO) concentration in the reactor. In a batch accumulation experiment with acetate,the PHA content achieved(28.5% CDW) was less than that of the pulse feeding strategy with the same amount of acetate(~2000 mg C/L). Using anaerobically treated and acidified brewery wastewater fed in pulses, the maximum PHA accumulated by the enriched MMC was similar for both wastewaters(45% CDW), in spite of the higher volatile fatty acid concentration in acidified brewery wastewater. The pulse feed addition controlled by the DO concentration was difficult to implement for wastewater as compared to acetate because the difference in DO concentration between substrate availability and depletion was low. For the batch addition of acidified wastewater, a slightly lower PHA content(39%CDW) was obtained. | 3 | Bamboo resources of Sikkim Himalaya: diversity, distribution and utilization显示文摘We recorded 8 genera and over 30 species of bamboo in Sikkim of the reported 23 genera and 125 species in India. Thirty percent of bamboo species were recorded in tropical forests(0–900 m), 40% of species in sub-tropical forests(900–1,800 m), 17% of species in temperate forests(1,800–2,700 m), 9% of species in sub-alpine forests(2,700–3,500 m) and 4% of species in alpine vegetation(3,500–4,500 m). Bamboo is used for various purposes and its versatility qualifies it to be a multiple-use alternative to timber, food for villagers and for tribal in particular. Bamboo is also equally important to Red Panda(Ailurus fulgens), the state animal of Sikkim. We develop a list of bamboos occurring in Sikkim with their vernacular names, distributions and uses in the Himalayan state. | 4 | Mucosal healing and inflammatory bowel disease:Therapeutic implications and new targets显示文摘Mucosal healing(MH)is vital in maintaining homeostasis within the gut and protecting against injury and infections.Multiple factors and signaling pathways contribute in a dynamic and coordinated manner to maintain intestinal homeostasis and mucosal regeneration/repair.However,when intestinal homeostasis becomes chronically disturbed and an inflammatory immune response is constitutively active due to impairment of the intestinal epithelial barrier autoimmune disease results,particularly inflammatory bowel disease(IBD).Many proteins and signaling pathways become dysregulated or impaired during these pathological conditions,with the mechanisms of regulation just beginning to be understood.Consequently,there remains a relative lack of broadly effective therapeutics that can restore MH due to the complexity of both the disease and healing processes,so tissue damage in the gastrointestinal tract of patients,even those in clinical remission,persists.With increased understanding of the molecular mechanisms of IBD and MH,tissue damage from autoimmune disease may in the future be ameliorated by developing therapeutics that enhance the body’s own healing response.In this review,we introduce the concept of mucosal healing and its relevance in IBD as well as discuss the mechanisms of IBD and potential strategies for altering these processes and inducing MH. | Megan Lynn Otte Raju Lama Tamang Julia Papapanagiotou Rizwan Ahmad Punita Dhawan Amar B Singh | 2023 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2023,29,7: | 1 |
