12Chemical characterization, release, and bioactivity of Eucalyptus camaldulensis polyphenols from freeze-dried sodium alginate and sodium carboxymethyl cellulose matrix显示文摘Crude ethanolic extract of Eucalyptus camaldulensis was encapsulated with sodium alginate- sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) using freeze-drying techniques. The microcapsules were characterized for particle size, morphology, physicochemical parameters, and micromeritics properties. Antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of the microcapsules were also demonstrated. Results revealed an irregular-shaped microparticles with a mean diameter ranging from 6.7 to 26.6 μm. Zeta potential and polydispersity index ranged from −17.01 to 2.23 mV and 0.34 to 0.49, respectively. Percentage yield ranged between 70.4 and 81.5 per cent whereas encapsulation efficiency ranged between 74.2 ± 0.011 and 82.43 ± 0.77 per cent. Swelling index and solubility varied inversely with extract concentration, with a range of 54.4%-84.0% and 18.8%-22.2%, respectively. Antioxidant activities varied directly with the concentration of the extract. Minimum inhibitory and minimum bactericidal concentrations of the microcapsules against Gram-positive foodborne pathogens ranged from 0.19 to 3.12 and 0.19-12.25 mg/ml, respectively. The Higuchi model indicated a time-dependent, delayed, and regulated release of polyphenols at 37°C. The results suggested that alginate-CMC possessed good encapsulant properties that preserved the bioactive extract, thus might be employed for application of natural products in food systems.Ozioma Forstinus Nwabor Sudarshan Singh Dwi Marlina Supayang Piyawan Voravuthikunchai 2020Food Quality and Safety2020,4,4:1
13Synthesis and structure-activity relationship of rhodomyrtone derivatives as antibacterial agent显示文摘To study structure-activity relationship of rhodomyrtone against Gram-positive bacteria, structural modification of rhodo-myrtone was carried out to afford its 10 analogues. All compounds were assayed for their antibacterial potency using broth microdilution method. The results indicated that rhodomyrtone exhibited higher antibacterial activity against all Gram-positive bacteria than its analogues, with the exception of rhodomyrtone 6,8-diacetate(3) and oxime analogues 6 and 7 which demonstrated similar activity as the parent compound against Bacillus subtilis and Staphylococcus epidermidis with minimum inhibitory concentration and minimum bactericidal concentration ranged from 1 to 4μg/mL and 2 to 4μg/mL,respectively.In contrast, all analogues displayed no activity against Acinetobacter baumannii.Hydroxyl and ketone groups of rhodomyrtone were elucidated to be essential for the antibacterial property.Sukanlaya Leejae Boon-ek Yingyongnarongkul Apichart Suksamrarn Supayang Piyawan Voravuthikunchai 2012Chinese Chemical Letters2012,23,9:1

15Synergistic effects of ethnomedicinal plants of Apocynaceae family and antibiotics against clinical isolates of Acinetobacter baumannii显示文摘Objective:To investigate the efficacy of 17 ethnomedicinal plants belonging to Apocynaceae family used in combination with 16 conventional antibiotics against non-multidrug resistant-,multidrug resistant(MDR)-.and extensive drug resistant(XDR) Acinetobacter baumannii(A.haumannii).Methods:Antibacterial activity and resistance modifying ability of 272combinations were determined by growth inhibition assays and further confirmed by time-kill assay. Results:Among the combinations of the antibiotics with Apocynaceae ethanol extracts on this pathogen,15(5%) had synergistic effects,23(8%) had partial synergistic effects and 234(86%) had no effects.Synergistic activity was observed mostly when the Apocynaceae extracts were combined with rifampicin or cefazolin.Interestingly.10 out of 17 combinations between the extracts and rifampicin displayed synergistic or partial synergistic behaviors.Holarrhena antidysenterica extract was additionally tested to restore rifampicin activity against clinical isolates of MDR and XDR A.haumannii.With respect to total or partial synergy,70%was XDR A.haumannii isolates and 66%was MDR A.haumannii isolates. Conclusions:Holarrhena antidysenterica extract clearly demonstrated the ability to restore rifampicin activity against both A.haumannii ATCC19606 and clinically isolated A.haumannii.Additional studies examining its active principles as well as nieclianisms of actions such as the effects on efflux pumps and outer membrane permeability alterations are recommended.Sasitorn Chusri Thanyaluck Siriyong Pinanong Na-Phatthalung Supayang Piyawan Voravuthikunchai 2014Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine2014,7,6:0
