| 1 | An erosional hiatus in Chinese loess sequences revealed by closely spaced optical dating显示文摘Chinese loess deposits are some of the best continental records of palaeoclimatic and pa- laeoenvironmental changes in the late Cenozoic. Many investigations have shown that the long-time climate variations recorded by the loess-paleosol sequences can be correlated with global environ- mental changes. However,there are still some foundational questions concerning loess deposition that are not well answered,casting uncertainty on many previous conclusions,especially high-resolu- tion palaeoclimatic records. In this study,three typical loess-paleosol sections spanning the last glacial cy- cle were closely sampled for optically stimulated lu- minescence (OSL) dating and palaeoclimate inter- pretation along a northwest-southeast transect in Chinese Loess Plateau. Results show that there is a 4-5 ka hiatus in the typical loess deposits,and as a consequence suggests that the loess record is not continuous over millennial time scales. As such,pre- vious conclusions on climatic and environmental changes at millennial-centennial time scale,recon- structed through the loess record,should be reinves- tigated. | 2 | On-the-fly active learning of interpretable Bayesian force fields for atomistic rare events显示文摘Machine learned force fields typically require manual construction of training sets consisting of thousands of first principles calculations,which can result in low training efficiency and unpredictable errors when applied to structures not represented in the training set of the model.This severely limits the practical application of these models in systems with dynamics governed by important rare events,such as chemical reactions and diffusion.We present an adaptive Bayesian inference method for automating the training of interpretable,low-dimensional,and multi-element interatomic force fields using structures drawn on the fly from molecular dynamics simulations.Within an active learning framework,the internal uncertainty of a Gaussian process regression model is used to decide whether to accept the model prediction or to perform a first principles calculation to augment the training set of the model.The method is applied to a range of single-and multi-element systems and shown to achieve a favorable balance of accuracy and computational efficiency,while requiring a minimal amount of ab initio training data.We provide a fully opensource implementation of our method,as well as a procedure to map trained models to computationally efficient tabulated force fields. | Jonathan Vandermause Steven B.Torrisi Simon Batzner Yu Xie Lixin Sun Alexie M.Kolpak Boris Kozinsky | 2020 | npj Computational Materials2020,,1: | 17 |

| 4 | ζ-Carotene Isomerase Suppresses Tillering in Rice through the Coordinated Biosynthesis of Strigolactone and Abscisic Acid显示文摘Rice tillering is an important agronomic trait affecting grain yield.Here,we identified a high-tillering mutant tillering20(t20),which could be restored to the wild type by treatment with the strigolactone(SL)analog rac-GR24.T20 encodes a chloroplast ζ-carotene isomerase(Z-ISO),which is involved in the biosynthesis of ca-rotenoids and their metabolites,SL and abscisic acid(ABA).The t20 mutant has reduced SL and ABA,raising the question of how SL and ABA biosynthesis is coordinated,and whether they have overlapping functions in tillering.We discovered that rac-GR24 stimulated T20 expression and enhanced all-trans-p-carotene biosynthesis.Importantly,rac-GR24 also stimulated expression of Oryza sativa 9-CIS-EPOXY-CAROTENOID DIOXYGENASE 1(OsNCED1)through induction of Oryza sativa HOMEOBOX12(0sHOX12),promoting ABA biosynthesis in shoot base.On the other hand,ABA treatment significantly repressed SL biosynthesis and the ABA biosynthetic mutants displayed elevated SL biosynthesis.ABA treatment reduced the number of basal tillers in both t20 and wild-type plants.Furthermore,while ABA-deficient mu-tants aba1 and aba2 had the same number of basal tillers as wild type,they had more unproductive upper tillers at maturity.This work demonstrates complex interactions in the biosynthesis of carotenoid,SLs and ABA,and reveals a role for ABA in the regulation of rice tillering. | Xue Liu Qingliang Hu Jijun Yan Kai Sun Yan Liang Meiru Jia Xiangbing Meng Shuang Fang Yiqin Wang Yanhui Jing Guifu Liu Dianxing Wu Chengcai Chu Steven M.Smith Jinfang Chu Yonghong Wang Jiayang Li Bing Wang | 2020 | Molecular Plant2020,13,12: | 11 |

| 7 | Deriving the magnetopause position from wide field-of-view soft X-ray imager simulation显示文摘Imaging techniques provide essential information in astronomical and space physics studies.The Soft X-ray Imager(SXI)will obtain images of the Earth’s magnetosphere via the solar wind charge exchange process in a global view.However,it is a challenge to reconstruct its 3-D structures from the observed 2-D image(s).In this paper,a recently proposed method,Tangent Fitting Approach(TFA),is validated to reconstruct the large-scale magnetopause from a single X-ray image obtained by instrument simulation.It is revealed that the large-scale magnetopause under a medium solar wind number density can be well reconstructed,although the locations of maximum X-ray photon counts are scattered in the image due to instrumental effects and diffusive sky background.Higher solar wind number density leads to stronger signals and further leads to better reconstruction results.For lower solar wind density,the X-ray maximum photon counts may not be identified from the SXI simulations,preprocessing of the images shall be considered before applying TFA.Furthermore,the subsolar magnetopause can be well derived when the satellite is on the dayside orbits. | Yihong GUO Tianran SUN Chi WANG Steven SEMBAY | 2022 | Science China Earth Sciences2022,65,8: | 4 |
| 8 | Towards high-power, high-coherence, integrated photonic mm Wave platform with microcavity solitons显示文摘Millimetre-wave(mmWave)technology continues to draw great interest due to its broad applications in wireless communications,radar,and spectroscopy.Compared to pure electronic solutions,photonic-based mmWave generation provides wide bandwidth,low power dissipation,and remoting through low-loss fibres.However,at high frequencies,two major challenges exist for the photonic system:the power roll-off of the photodiode,and the large signal linewidth derived directly from the lasers.Here,we demonstrate a new photonic mmWave platform combining integrated microresonator solitons and high-speed photodiodes to address the challenges in both power and coherence.The solitons,being inherently mode-locked,are measured to provide 5.8 dB additional gain through constructive interference among mmWave beatnotes,and the absolute mmWave power approaches the theoretical limit of conventional heterodyne detection at 100 GHz.In our free-running system,the soliton is capable of reducing the mmWave linewidth by two orders of magnitude from that of the pump laser.Our work leverages microresonator solitons and high-speed modified uni-traveling carrier photodiodes to provide a viable path to chip-scale,high-power,low-noise,high-frequency sources for mmWave applications. | Beichen Wang Jesse SMorgan Keye Sun Mandana Jahanbozorgi Zijiao Yang Madison Woodson Steven Estrella Andreas Beling Xu Yi | 2021 | Light(Science & Applications)2021,10,1: | 3 |
