| 3 | Role of antispasmodics in the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome显示文摘Irritable bowel syndrome(IBS)is a long-lasting,relapsing disorder characterized by abdominal pain/discomfort and altered bowel habits.Intestinal motility impairment and visceral hypersensitivity are the key factors among its multifactorial pathogenesis,both of which require effective treatment.Voltage-gated calcium channels mediate smooth muscle contraction and endocrine secretion and play important roles in neuronal transmission.Antispasmodics are a group of drugs that have been used in the treatment of IBS for decades.Alverine citrate,a spasmolytic,decreases the sensitivity of smooth muscle contractile proteins to calcium,and it is a selective 5-HT1A receptor antagonist.Alverine,in combination with simethicone,has been demonstrated to effectively reduce abdominal pain and discomfort in a large placebo-controlled trial.Mebeverine is a musculotropic agent that potently blocks intestinal peristalsis.Non-placebo-controlled trials have shown positive effects of mebeverine in IBS regarding symptom control;nevertheless,in recent placebo-controlled studies,mebeverine did not exhibit superiority over placebo.Otilonium bromide is poorly absorbed from the GI tract,where it acts locally as an L-type calcium channel blocker,an antimuscarinic and a tachykinin NK2receptor antagonist.Otilonium has effectively reduced pain and improved defecation alterations in placebocontrolled trials in IBS patients.Pinaverium bromide is also an L-type calcium channel blocker that acts locally in the GI tract.Pinaverium improves motility disorders and consequently reduces stool problems in IBS patients.Phloroglucinol and trimethylphloroglucinol are non-specific antispasmodics that reduced pain in IBS patients in a placebo-controlled trial.Antispasmodics have excellent safety profiles.T-type calcium channel blockers can abolish visceral hypersensitivity in animal models,which makes them potential candidates for the development of novel therapeutic agents in the treatment of IBS. | Anita Annaházi Richárd Róka András Rosztóczy Tibor Wittmann | 2014 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2014,20,20: | 15 |

| 5 | Enhancing plastic deformability of Mg and its alloys—A review of traditional and nascent developments显示文摘Mg and its alloys have continued to attract interest for several structural and super-sensitive applications because of their light weight and good combination of engineering properties.However for some of these applications,high plastic deformability is required to achieve desired component shapes and configurations;unfortunately,Mg and its alloys have low formability.Scientifically,the plastic behaviour of Mg and its alloys ranks among the most complex and difficult to reconcile in metallic material systems.But basically,the HCP crystal structure coupled with low stacking fault energies(SFE)are largely linked to the poor ductility exhibited by Mg alloys.These innate material characteristics have regrettably limited wide spread applicability of Mg and its alloys.Several research efforts aimed at exploring processing strategies to make these alloys more amenable for high formability–mediated engineering use have been reported and still ongoing.This paper reviews the structural metallurgy of Mg alloys and its influence on mechanical behaviour,specifically,plasticity characteristics.It also concisely presents various processing routes(Alloying,Traditional Forming and Severe Plastic Deformation(SPD))which have been explored to enhance plastic deformability in Mg and its alloys.Grain refinement and homogenising of phases,reducing CRSS between slip modes,twinning suppression to activate non-basal slip,and weakening and randomisation of the basal texture were observed as the formability enhancing strategies explored in the reviewed processes.While identifying the limitations of these strategies,further areas to be explored for enhancing plasticity of Mg alloys are highlighted. | Kenneth Kanayo Alaneme Eloho Anita Okotete | 2017 | Journal of Magnesium and Alloys2017,5,4: | 14 |
| 6 | Piper sarmentosum as an antioxidant on oxidative stress in human umbilical vein endothelial cells induced by hydrogen peroxide显示文摘Endothelial cell death due to increased reactive oxygen species(ROS) may contribute to the initial endothelial injury,which promotes atherosclerotic lesion formation.Piper sarmentosum(PS),a natural product,has been shown to have an antioxidant property,which is hypothesized to inhibit production of ROS and prevent cell injury.Thus,the present study was designed to determine the effects of PS on the hydrogen peroxide(H2O2)-induced oxidative cell damage in cultured human umbilical vein endothelial cells(HUVECs).In this experiment,HUVECs were obtained by collagenase perfusion of the large vein in the umbilical cord and cultured in medium M200 supplemented with low serum growth supplementation(LSGS).HUVECs were treated with various concentrations of H2O2(0-1000 μmol/L) and it was observed that 180 μmol/L H2O2 reduced cell viability by 50% as denoted by 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide(MTT) assay.Using the above concentration as the positive control,the H2O2-induced HUVECs were concomitantly treated with various concentrations(100,150,250 and 300 μg/ml) of three different extracts(aqueous,methanol and hexane) of PS.Malondialdehyde(MDA),superoxide dismutase(SOD),catalase(CAT) and glutathione peroxidase(GPX) levels showed a significant increase(P<0.05) in HUVECs compared to the negative control.However,PS extracts showed a protective effect on HUVECs from H2O2-induced cell apoptosis with a significant reduction in MDA,SOD,CAT and GPX levels(P<0.05).Furthermore,PS had exhibited ferric reducing antioxidant power with its high phenolic content.Hence,it was concluded that PS plays a beneficial role in reducing oxidative stress in H2O2-induced HUVECs. | Abdul Hamid HAFIZAH Zakaria ZAITON Amom ZULKHAIRI Adenan MOHD ILHAM Megat Mohd Nordin NOR ANITA Abdullah Mahdy ZALEHA | 2010 | Journal of Zhejiang University-Science B(Biomedicine & Biotechnology)2010,11,5: | 13 |

| 12 | Antioxidant activity and phenol and flavonoid contents of eight medicinal plants from Western Nepal显示文摘OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the antioxidant activity, phenolic and flavonoids contents of selected medicinal plants form the Western region of Nepal.METHODS: The antioxidant activity of selected medicinal plants were determined by using 2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical scavenging activity; total ferric ion reducing ability through spectroscopic analysis. The content of total phenols was determined using Folin-Ciocalteu reagent, whereas Aluminum chloride colorimetric method was used for flavonoid determination.RESULTS: Extracts of Syzygium Operculatus(87%),Astilbe Rivularis(83%) and Mallotus Philippnensis(88%) showed significant free radical scavenging activity with effective concentration(EC50) close to that of ascorbic acid. Syzygium Operculatus(96%),Astilbe Rivularis(97%) and Mallotus Philippnensis(97%) had potent reducing power in concentration dependent fashion. Those plant extract with higher free radical scavenging and ferric reducing effect also showed the greater content of both phenols and flavonoids, suggesting the correlation between polyphenolic content and antioxidant activity. Those plant extracts which showed better antioxidant activity assays, also demonstrated higher total phenol and flavonoid contents. | 13 | Is there a role for serum endothelin in predicting the severity of acute pancreatitis?显示文摘BACKGROUND: Acute pancreatitis remains a common presentation to acute surgical units and carries significant morbidity and mortality. The progression of the disease to necrotizing pancreatitis and multi-organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS) is associated with a very poor clinical outcome, and persistendy high mortality. Increases in serum endothelin (ET) have been seen in animal models of acute pancreatitis and this study aims to investigate whether there is a change in serum ET-1 in patients with acute pancreatitis and whether any such change is linked to disease severity. METHODS: All patients admitted with acute pancreatitis were prospectively recruited from die emergency admissions at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital. Serum ET levels were determined on admission, at 24 hours and 5 days post admission. Healthy adult controls were recruited from dermatology outpatients. RESULTS: A total of 21 patients joined the trial after giving informed consent. There were 3 men and 18 women with a median age of 65 years (range 26-87 years). Serum ET levels were significantly higher in acute pancreatitis patients than in normal controls (P <0. 05). An association was seen between persistendy raised serum ET levels and progression to MODS. CONCLUSIONS: The study does demonstrate a correlation between the circulating levels of ET and acute pancreatitis in humans, although it does not elicit its involvement in the pathogenesis of the disease. All the treatments significantly improved the growth of the plants as compared to untreated inoculated plants. Analysis of data showed that carbofuran and A. indica seed powder increased plant growth and yield significantly more in comparison to bavistin and P. fluorescens. | 18 | Acoustic radiation force impulse imaging for assessing liver fibrosis in alcoholic liver disease显示文摘AIM: To evaluate the performance of elastography by ultrasound with acoustic radiation force impulse(ARFI) in determining fibrosis stage in patients with alcoholic liver disease(ALD) undergoing alcoholic detoxification in relation to biopsy.METHODS: Eighty-three patients with ALD undergoing detoxification were prospectively enrolled. Each patient underwent ARFI imaging and a liver biopsy onthe same day. Fibrosis was staged according to the METAVIR scoring system. The median of 10 valid ARFI measurements was calculated for each patient.RESULTS: Sixty-nine males and thirteen females(one patient excluded due to insufficient biopsy size) were assessed with a mean alcohol consumption of 132.4 ± 128.8 standard drinks per week and mean cumulative year duration of 17.6 ± 9.5 years. | 20 | Ethanolic extracts of babandotan leaves(Ageratum conyzoides L.)prevents inflammation and proteoglycan degradation by inhibiting TNF-αand MMP-9 on osteoarthritis rats induced by monosodium iodoacetate显示文摘Objective:To analyze the effects of Ageratum conyzoides L.on the monosodium iodoacetate induced osteoarthritis rats.Methods:Thin layer chromatography was performed to analyze the constituents of the babandotan extract leaves.White male Sprague-Dawley rats used in this study were divided into 6 groups:normal control and negative control groups,both given0.5%carboxymethyl cellulose;the positive control group that was given glucosamine and chondroitin suspension(486 mg/200 g B.W.);the 3 dose variation extract groups including dose 1,2,and 3 that were given 40,80,and 160 mg/200 g B.W.respectively on day 29 until50.All the groups were induced with 0.05 mL monosodium iodoacetate(20 mg/mL)on day1,except normal control induced by saline.Measurement of edema volume of rat knees was performed on day 0,8,15,22,29,43,and 50.Hematology data was measured at day 1,29and 50.Serum was collected at day 50 to evaluate TNF-α and MMP-9 by ELISA.Cartilage histopathology was evaluated by staining with H&E and Safranin-o-fast green staining on day 50.Results:The babandotan leaves extract dose 2(80 mg/200 g B.W.)and dose 3(160mg/200 g B.W.)could decrease the edema volume,increase the area and thickness of articular cartilage,and increase proteoglycan level.Particularly,dose 3(160 mg/200 g B.W.)of extract babandotan leaves were able to significantly decrease the number of leukocytes,lymphocytes and udem volume,and decrease TNF alpha and MMP-9 levels.Conclusions:Babandotan leaves extract can recover inflammation and cartilages degradation by inhibiting TNF-αin inflammation processes and MMP-9 in the collagenase reaction in the cartilages. | Anton Bahtiar Mutiara Nurazizah Tirza Roselina Anita Paulina Tambunan Ade Arsianti | 2017 | Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine2017,10,3: | 6 |
