| 1 | Adjuvant heparanase inhibitor PI-88 therapy for hepatocellular carcinoma recurrence显示文摘AIM: To demonstrate that administering heparanase inhibitor PI-88 at 160 mg/d is safe and promising in reducing hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC) recurrence for up to 3 year following curative resection. METHODS: A total of 143 patients(83.1% of the 172 participants in the phase Ⅱ study) participated in the follow-up study. Of these patients, 50 had received no treatment, 48 had received 160 mg/d PI-88, and 45 had received 250 mg/d PI-88 during the phase Ⅱ trial. Safety parameters and the following efficacy endpoints were investigated:(1) time to recurrence;(2) diseasefree survival; and(3) overall survival. RESULTS: PI-88 at 160 mg/d delayed the onset and frequency of HCC recurrence, and provided a clinically significant survival advantage for up to 3 years after treatment compared with those of the control group:(1) the recurrence-free rate increased from 50% to 63%, and(2) time to recurrence at the 36 th percentile was postponed by 78%. The efficacy of administering PI-88 at 250 mg/d was confounded by a high dropout rate(11 out of 54 patients). Additionally, subgroup analyses of patients with(1) multiple tumors or a single tumor ≥ 2 cm; and(2) hepatitis B or C revealed that administering PI-88 at 160 mg/d conferred the most significant survival advantage(56.8% improvement in disease-free survival, P = 0.045) for patients with both risk factors for recurrence. | 2 | Liquid crystal display and organic light-emitting diode display: present status and future perspectives显示文摘Recently,‘Liquid crystal display(LCD)vs.organic light-emitting diode(OLED)display:who wins?’has become a topic of heated debate.In this review,we perform a systematic and comparative study of these two flat panel display technologies.First,we review recent advances in LCDs and OLEDs,including material development,device configuration and system integration.Next we analyze and compare their performances by six key display metrics:response time,contrast ratio,color gamut,lifetime,power efficiency,and panel flexibility.In this section,we focus on two key parameters:motion picture response time(MPRT)and ambient contrast ratio(ACR),which dramatically affect image quality in practical application scenarios.MPRT determines the image blur of a moving picture,and ACR governs the perceived image contrast under ambient lighting conditions.It is intriguing that LCD can achieve comparable or even slightly better MPRT and ACR than OLED,although its response time and contrast ratio are generally perceived to be much inferior to those of OLED.Finally,three future trends are highlighted,including high dynamic range,virtual reality/augmented reality and smart displays with versatile functions. | Hai-Wei Chen Jiun-Haw Lee Bo-Yen Lin Stanley Chen Shin-Tson Wu | 2017 | Light(Science & Applications)2017,6,1: | 3 |

| 15 | The Impact of Satellite Radiance Data Assimilation within a Frequently Updated Regional Forecast System Using a GSI-based Ensemble Kalman Filter显示文摘A regional ensemble Kalman filter (EnKF) data assimilation (DA) and forecast system was recently established based on the Gridpoint Statistical Interpolation (GSI) analysis system. The EnKF DA system was tested with continuous threehourly updated cycles followed by 18-h deterministic forecasts from every three-hourly ensemble mean analysis. Initial tests showed negative to neutral impacts of assimilating satellite radiance data due to the improper bias correction procedure. In this study, two bias correction schemes within the established EnKF DA system are investigated and the impact of assimilating additional polar-orbiting satellite radiance is also investigated. Two group experiments are conducted. The purpose of the first group is to evaluate the bias correction procedure. Two online bias correction methods based on GSI 3DVar and EnKF algorithms are used to assimilate AMSU-A radiance data. Results show that both variational and EnKF-based bias correction procedures effectively reduce the observation and background radiance differences, achieving positive impacts on forecasts. With proper bias correction, we assimilate full radiance observations including AMSU-A, AMSU-B, AIRS, HIRS3/4, and MHS in the second group. The relative percentage improvements (RPIs) for all forecast variables compared to those without radiance data assimilation are mostly positive, with the RPI of upper-air relative humidity being the largest.
