Retinal ganglion cell complex changes using spectral domain optical coherence tomography in diabetic patients without retinopathy显示文摘AIM:To assess the ganglion cell complex(GCC)thickness in diabetic eyes without retinopathy. METHODS:Two groups included 45 diabetic eyes without retinopathy and 21 non diabetic eyes. All subjects underwent full medical and ophthalmological history, full ophthalmological examination, measuring GCC thickness and central foveal thickness(CFT)using the RTVue~? spectral domainoptical coherence tomography(SD-OCT),and HbA1C level.RESULTS:GCC focal loss volume(FLV%)was significantly more in diabetic eyes(22.2% below normal)than normal eyes(P=0.024). No statistically significant difference was found between the diabetic group and the control group regarding GCC global loss volume(GLV%)(P=0.160). CFT was positively correlated to the average, superior and inferior GCC(P=0.001,0.000 and 0.001 respectively)and negatively correlated to GLV% and FLV%(P=0.002 and0.031 respectively)in diabetic eyes. C/D ratio in diabetic eyes was negatively correlated to average, superior and inferior GCC(P=0.015,0.007 and 0.017 respectively). The FLV% was negatively correlated to the refraction and level of Hb A1c(P=0.019 and 0.013 respectively)and positively correlated to the best corrected visual acuity(BCVA)in log MAR in diabetic group(P=0.004).CONCLUSION:Significant GCC thinning in diabetes predates retinal vasculopathy, which is mainly focal rather than diffuse. It has no preference to either the superior or inferior halves of the macula. Increase of myopic error is significantly accompanied with increased focal GCC loss. GCC loss is accompanied with increased C/D ratio in diabetic eyes. | Ahmed I.Hegazy Rasha H.Zedan Tamer A.Macky Soheir M.Esmat | 2017 | International Journal of Ophthalmology(English edition)2017,10,3: | 5
Sequence Stratigraphy and Rudist Facies Development of the Upper Barremian-Lower Cenomanian Platform, Northern Sinai, Egypt显示文摘The Lower Cretaceous sections in northern Sinai are composed of the Risan Aneiza(upper Barremian-middle Albian) and the Halal(middle Albian-lower Cenomanian) formations. The facies reflect subtle paleobathymetry from inner to outer ramp facies. The inner ramp facies are peritidal, protected to open marine lagoons, shoals and rudist biostrome facies. The inner ramp facies grade northward into outer ramp deposits. The upper Barremian-lower Cenomanian succession is subdivided into nine depositional sequences correlated with those recognized in the neighbouring Tethyan areas. These sequences are subdivided into 19 medium-scale sequences based on the facies evolution, the recorded hardgrounds and flooding surfaces, interpreted as the result of eustatic sea level changes and local tectonic activities of the early Syrian Arc rifting stage. Each sequence contains a lower retrogradational parasequence set that constituted the transgressive systems tracts and an upper progradational parasequence set that formed the highstand systems tracts. Nine rudist levels are recorded in the upper Barremian through lower Cenomanian succession at Gabal Raghawi. At Gabal Yelleg two rudist levels are found in the Albian. The rudist levels are associated with the highstand systems tract deposits because of the suitability of the trophic conditions in the rudist-dominated ramp. | Yasser SALAMA Michael GRAMMER Shaban SABER Soheir EL-SHAZLY Gouda ABDEL-GAWAD | 2018 | Acta Geologica Sinica(English Edition)2018,92,1: | 3

Assessment of auditory and vestibular functions in vitiligo patients显示文摘Objectives: To evaluate audiological and vestibular functions via basic audiological evaluation. otoacoustic emissions and videonystagmography(VNG) in vitiligo patients.Material and methods: 30 vitiligo patients(8 acrofacial and 22 mixed types) as the study group and 30 normal healthy adults as the control group were included in the study. All participants were submitted to basic audiological evaluation. transient and distortion product otoacoustic emmisions(TEOAEs and DPOAEs), vestibular assessment including history taking, office tests and videonystagmography(VNG) and dermatological assessment to determine type, percent of body surface area involvement and duration of vitiligo. Results: This study showed statistically significant difference between control and study groups in pure tone audiometry(PTA) and otoacoustic emissions results. Fitfty percent of vitiligo patients had peripheral vestibular disorders(10 vestibulhar neuritis and 5 posterior canal benign paroxysmal positional vertigo. Conclusion: The results in this study showed that 50% of vitiligo patients suffered from peripheral vestibular disorders in addition to auditory affection. Vitiligo patients require routine monitoring for auditory and vestibular functions for early identification and monitoring of changes as the disease progress. | Eman Abd Elmohsin Dawoud Elshahat Ibrahem Ismail Soheir Abdel-Gaber Eltoukhy Ayman El-Saeed El-Sharabasy | 2017 | Journal of Otology2017,12,3: | 1

Does granulocyte-colony stimulating factor administration induce damage or repair response in schistosomiasis?显示文摘AIM:To introduce Granulocyte-colony stimulating factor (G-CSF) as a new therapeutic modality for schistosomiasis through stem cell mobilization, immunomodulation or fibrosis remodeling. METHODS:In this study,a 5 d course of human recombinant G-CSF (100 μg/kg sc) was applied to Schis-tosoma mansoni-infected mice at different stages of disease (5 d before infection as well as 3,5 and 7 wk post-infection). The animals were sacrificed at 10 d as well as 4,6 and 8 wk post infection. Mice were examined for:(1) Total leukocyte count which is an accepted surrogate marker for the stem cell mobilization into the circulation; (2) Egg count in intestine and liver tissue to assess the parasitic load; and (3) Histopathological changes in Hx/E and Masson trichrome stained sections as well as collagen content in Sirius redstained liver sections to determine the severity of liver fibrosis. RESULTS:Mice developed leukocytosis. The egg load and the number of granulomas were not affected by the G-CSF treatment but there was an obvious change in the composition of granulomas towards an increased cellularity. Moreover, fibrosis was significantly decreased in treated groups compared to untreated animals (collagen content either preinfection or at 3 and 5 wk post infection:5.8 ± 0.5,4.7 ± 0.5,4.0 ± 0.7 vs 8.2 ± 0.9; P ≤ 0.01). CONCLUSION:Although G-CSF did not cause direct elimination of the parasite,it enhanced granulomatous reaction and reduced the fibrosis. Further investigation of the underlying mechanisms of these two actions is warranted. | Lobna Y Ghanem Uta Dahmen Olaf Dirsch Mona MF Nosseir Soheir S Mahmoud Wafaa AF Mansour | 2010 | World Journal of Hepatology2010,2,12: | 0

Evaluation of liver tissue by polymerase chain reaction for hepatitis B virus in patients with negative viremia显示文摘AIM: To assess the clinical significance of Hepatitis B virus (HBV) DNA localization in the liver tissue of patients with positive HBsAg and negative viremia.METHODS: HBV virological parameters of 33 HBsAg positive chronic hepatitis patients, including seromarkers and HBV DNA amplification in both sera and liver biopsies, were evaluated.RESULTS: Ten patients had negative viremia and positive HBV DNA in their liver biopsies. Most of them had HBeAg-negative/HBeAb-positive chronic hepatitis.Their liver biochemical and histopathological profiles were different from the viremic patients. Their disease pattern was designated as 'hepatitis B in situ'.CONCLUSION: Hepatitis B in situ is a consequential entity which can be missed in clinical practice. It is a new clinical pattern of chronic HBV infection that considers HBV in liver biopsy and adds a new indication for antiviral therapy. | Fouad Thakeb Magdy El-Serafy Soheir Zakaria Bahaa Monir Sahar Lashin Raghda Marzaban Mostafa El-Awady | 2005 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2005,11,43: | 0
