1Evaluation of potential landslide damming: Case study of Urni landslide,Kinnaur, Satluj valley, India显示文摘This work aims to understand the process of potential landslide damming using slope failure mechanism,dam dimension and dam stability evaluation. The Urni landslide, situated on the right bank of the Satluj River, Himachal Pradesh(India) is taken as the case study. The Urni landslide has evolved into a complex landslide in the last two decade(2000-2016) and has dammed the Satluj River partially since year 2013,damaging ~200 m stretch of the National Highway(NH-05). The crown of the landslide exists at an altitude of ~2180-2190 m above msl, close to the Urni village that has a human population of about 500.The high resolution imagery shows ~50 m long landslide scarp and ~100 m long transverse cracks in the detached mass that implies potential for further slope failure movement. Further analysis shows that the landslide has attained an areal increase of 103,900 ± 1142 m^2 during year 2004-2016. About 86% of this areal increase occurred since year 2013. Abrupt increase in the annual mean rainfall is also observed since the year 2013. The extreme rainfall in the June, 2013; 11 June(~100 mm) and 16 June(~115 mm),are considered to be responsible for the slope failure in the Urni landslide that has partially dammed the river. The finite element modelling(FEM) based slope stability analysis revealed the shear strain in the order of 0.0-0.16 with 0.0-0.6 m total displacement in the detachment zone. Further, kinematic analysis indicated planar and wedge failure condition in the jointed rockmass. The debris flow runout simulation of the detached mass in the landslide showed a velocity of ~25 m/s with a flow height of ~15 m while it(debris flow) reaches the valley floor. 6Diversity of non-timber forest products in Cachar District, Assam, India显示文摘We identified 67 and 21 NTFP-yielding plant and animal species, respectively, in a reserve forest in Cachar district of Assam. We recorded globally threatened species listed by IUCN as Critically Endangered(plant species Dipterocarpus turbinatus), Vulnerable(plant species Aquillaria malaccensis), Endangered(animal species Hoolock hoolock, Indotestudo elongata and Manis pentadactyla), and Vulnerable(animal species Nilssonia hurum and Rusa unicolor). The whole plant or animal and/or their various parts were used as food or medicine, in house construction, magico-religious activities and others. While some NTFPs were harvested throughout the year, others were harvested seasonally. 7Evaluation of the influence of El Niño–Southern Oscillation on air quality in southern China from long-term historical observations显示文摘Previous studies demonstrated that the El Niño–Southern Oscillation(ENSO)could modulate regional climate thus influencing air quality in the low-middle latitude regions like southern China.However,such influence has not been well evaluated at a long-term historical scale.To filling the gap,this study investigated two-decade(2002 to 2020)aerosol concentration and particle size in southern China during the whole dynamic development of ENSO phases.Results suggest strong positive correlations between aerosol optical depth(AOD)and ENSO phases,as low AOD occurred during El Niño while high AOD occurred during La Niña event.Such correlations are mainly attributed to the variation of atmospheric circulation and precipitation during corresponding ENSO phase.Analysis of the angstrom exponent(AE)anomalies further confirmed the circulation pattern,as negative AE anomalies is pronounced in El Niño indicating the enhanced transport of sea salt aerosols from the South China Sea,while the La Niña event exhibits positive AE anomalies which can be attributed to the enhanced import of northern fine anthropogenic aerosols.This study further quantified the AOD variation attributed to changes in ENSO phases and anthropogenic emissions.Results suggest that the long-term AOD variation from 2002 to 2020 in southern China is mostly driven(by 64.2%)by the change of anthropogenic emissions from 2002 to 2020.However,the ENSO presents dominant influence(70.5%)on year-to-year variations of AOD during 2002–2020,implying the importance of ENSO on varying aerosol concentration in a short-term period.Shansi Wang Siwei Li Jia Xing Jie Yang Jiaxin Dong Yu Qin Shovan Kumar Sahu 2022Frontiers of Environmental Science & Engineering2022,16,2:0
8A Highly Accurate Dysphonia Detection System Using Linear Discriminant Analysis显示文摘The recognition of pathological voice is considered a difficult task for speech analysis.Moreover,otolaryngologists needed to rely on oral communication with patients to discover traces of voice pathologies like dysphonia that are caused by voice alteration of vocal folds and their accuracy is between 60%–70%.To enhance detection accuracy and reduce processing speed of dysphonia detection,a novel approach is proposed in this paper.We have leveraged Linear Discriminant Analysis(LDA)to train multiple Machine Learning(ML)models for dysphonia detection.Several ML models are utilized like Support Vector Machine(SVM),Logistic Regression,and K-nearest neighbor(K-NN)to predict the voice pathologies based on features like Mel-Frequency Cepstral Coefficients(MFCC),Fundamental Frequency(F0),Shimmer(%),Jitter(%),and Harmonic to Noise Ratio(HNR).The experiments were performed using Saarbrucken Voice Data-base(SVD)and a privately collected dataset.The K-fold cross-validation approach was incorporated to increase the robustness and stability of the ML models.According to the experimental results,our proposed approach has a 70%increase in processing speed over Principal Component Analysis(PCA)and performs remarkably well with a recognition accuracy of 95.24%on the SVD dataset surpassing the previous best accuracy of 82.37%.In the case of the private dataset,our proposed method achieved an accuracy rate of 93.37%.It can be an effective non-invasive method to detect dysphonia.Anas Basalamah Mahedi Hasan Shovan Bhowmik Shaikh Akib Shahriyar 2023Computer Systems Science & Engineering2023,44,3:0
9Accurate prediction of air quality response to emissions for effective control policy design显示文摘Designing effective control policy requires accurate quantification of the relationship between the ambient concentrations of O3and PM2.5and the emissions of their precursors.However,the challenge is that precursor reduction does not necessarily lead to decreases in the concentrations of O3and PM2.5,which are formed by multiple precursors under complex physical and chemical processes;this calls for the development of advanced model technologies to provide accurate predictions of the nonlinear responses of air quality to emissions.Different from the traditional sensitivity analysis and source apportionment methods,the reduced form models(RFMs)based on chemical transport models(CTMs)are able to quantify air quality responses to emissions more accurately and efficiently with lower computational cost.Here we review recent approaches used in RFMs and compare their structures,advantages and disadvantages,performance and applications.In general,RFMs are classified into three types including(1)sensitivity-based models,(2)models with simplified chemistry and physical processes,and(3)statistical models,with considerable differences in principles,characteristics and application ranges.The prediction of nonlinear responses by RFMs enables more in-depth analysis,not only in terms of real-time prediction of concentrations and quantification of human exposure,health impacts and economic damage,but also in optimizing control policies.Notably,data assimilation and emission inventory inversion based on the nonlinear response of concentrations to emissions can also be greatly beneficial to air pollution control management.In future studies,improvement in the performance of CTMs is exceedingly crucial to obtain a more reliable baseline for the prediction of air quality responses.Development of models to determine the air quality response to emissions under varying meteorological conditions is also necessary in the context of future climate changes,which pose great challenges to the quantification of response relationships.Additionally,with rising requirements for fine-scale air quality management,improving the performance of urban-scale simulations is worth considering.In short,accurate predictions of the response of air quality to emissions,though challenging,holds great promise for the present as well as for future scenarios.Min Cao Jia Xing Shovan Kumar Sahu Lei Duan Junhua Li 2023Journal of Environmental Sciences2023,,1:0

11Understand the local and regional contributions on air pollution from the view of human health impacts显示文摘The source-receptor matrix of PM_(2.5)concentration from local and regional sources in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei(BTH)and surrounding provinces has been created in previous studies.However,because the spatial distribution of concentration does not necessarily match with that of the population,such concentration-based source-receptor matrix may not fully reflect the importance of pollutant control effectiveness in reducing the PM_(2.5)-related health impacts.To demonstrate that,we study the source-receptor matrix of the PM_(2.5)-related deaths instead,with inclusion of the spatial correlations between the concentrations and the population.The advanced source apportionment numerical model combined with the integrated exposure-response functions is used for BTH and surrounding regions in 2017.We observed that the relative contribution to PM_(2.5)-related deaths of local emissions was 0.75%to 20.77%larger than that of PM_(2.5)concentrations.Such results address the importance of local emissions control for reducing health impacts of PM_(2.5)particularly for local residents.Contribution of regional transport to PM_(2.5)-related deaths in rural area was 22%larger than that in urban area due to the spatial pattern of regional transport which was more related to the rural population.This resulted in an environmental inequality in the sense that people staying in rural area with access to less educational resources are subjected to higher impacts from regional transport as compared with their more resourceful and knowledgeable urban compatriots.An unexpected benefit from the multi-regional joint controls is suggested for its effectiveness in reducing the regional transport of PM_(2.5)pollution thus mitigating the associated environmental inequality.Yueqi Jiang Jia Xing Shuxiao Wang Xing Chang Shuchang Liu Aijun Shi Baoxian Liu Shovan Kumar Sahu 2021Frontiers of Environmental Science & Engineering2021,15,5:0
