| 1 | Relationships between the North Pacific Oscillation and the typhoon/hurricane frequencies显示文摘Relationships between the North Pacific Oscillation (NPO) and the typhoon as well as hurricane fre-quencies are documented. The correlation between NPO index in June-July-August-September and the annual typhoon number in the western North Pacific is 0.37 for the period of 1949―1998. The NPO is correlated with the annual hurricane number in the tropical Atlantic at -0.28 for the same period. The variability of NPO is found to be concurrent with the changes of the magnitude of vertical zonal wind shear, sea-level pressure patterns, as well as the sea surface temperature, which are physically asso- ciated with the typhoons and hurricanes genesis. | 3 | A Review of Seasonal Climate Prediction Research in China显示文摘The ultimate goal of climate research is to produce climate predictions on various time scales. In China, efforts to predict the climate started in the 1930 s. Experimental operational climate forecasts have been performed since the late 1950 s,based on historical analog circulation patterns. However, due to the inherent complexity of climate variability, the forecasts produced at that time were fairly inaccurate. Only from the late 1980 s has seasonal climate prediction experienced substantial progress, when the Tropical Ocean and Global Atmosphere project of the World Climate Research program(WCRP) was launched. This paper, following a brief description of the history of seasonal climate prediction research, provides an overview of these studies in China. Processes and factors associated with the climate variability and predictability are discussed based on the literature published by Chinese scientists. These studies in China mirror aspects of the climate research effort made in other parts of the world over the past several decades, and are particularly associated with monsoon research in East Asia. As the climate warms, climate extremes, their frequency, and intensity are projected to change, with a large possibility that they will increase. | 4 | Relationship between Arctic Oscillation and Pacific Decadal Oscillation on decadal timescale显示文摘The relationship between the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) and the Arctic Oscillation (AO) on decadal timescale in the extended winter (November-March) is investigated in this study. The results indicate that AO plays an important role in the low frequency variability of PDO. When AO leads PDO by 7-8 years, the lagging correlation between them becomes the strongest with correlation coeffi- cient 0.77. The leading decadal variability of AO pro- vides a valuably precursory signal for predicting the variability of PDO. | 5 | Constructal entransy dissipation rate minimization for leaf-like fins显示文摘Based on constructal theory,the constructs of the leaf-like fins are optimized by taking minimum entransy dissipation rate(for the fixed total thermal current,i.e.,the equivalent thermal resistance) as optimization objective.The optimal constructs of the leaf-like fins with minimum dimensionless equivalent thermal resistance are obtained.The results show that there exists an optimal elemental leaf-like fin number,which leads to an optimal global heat conduction performance of the first order leaf-like fin.The Biot number has little effects on the optimal elemental fin number,optimal ratios of length and width of the elemental and first order leaf-like fins;with the increase of the thermal conductivity ratio of the vein and blade,the optimal elemental fin number and optimal ratio of the length and width of the elemental leaf-like fin increase,and the optimal shape of the first order leaf-like fin becomes tubbier.The optimal construct based on entransy dissipation rate minimization is obviously different from that based on maximum temperature difference minimization.The dimensionless equivalent thermal resistance based on entransy dissipation rate minimization is reduced by 11.54% compared to that based on maximum temperature difference minimization,and the global heat conduction performance of the leaf-like fin is effectively improved.For the same volumes of the elemental and first order leaf-like fins,the minimum dimensionless equivalent thermal resistance of the first order of the leaf-like fin is reduced by 30.10% compared to that of the elemental leaf-like fin,and the global heat conduction performance of the first order leaf-like fin is obviously better than that of the elemental leaf-like fin.Essentially,this is because the temperature gradient field of the first order leaf-like fin based on entransy dissipation rate minimization is more homogenous than that of the elemental leaf-like fin.The dimensionless equivalent thermal resistance defined based on entransy dissipation rate reflects the average heat transfer performance of the leaf-like fin,and can provide some guidelines for the thermal design of the fins from the viewpoint of heat transfer optimization. | FENG HuiJun CHEN LinGen SUN FengRui | 2012 | Science China(Technological Sciences)2012,55,2: | 19 |

| 9 | Constructal entransy dissipation rate minimization for helm-shaped fin with inner heat sources显示文摘A model of three-dimensional helm-shaped body composed of a helm-shaped fin and inner heat sources is built in this paper. For the specified volumes of the body, fin and heat source, the constructal optimizations of the body with single and multiple inner heat sources are implemented. The entransy-dissipation-rate-based equivalent thermal resistance(ETR) is minimized in the optimizations. It shows that for the helm-shaped body with multiple inner heat sources, there exist an optimal ratio of the heat source distance to the radius of the extended fin and a twice optimal radius ratio of the centre fin to the extended fin which lead to the double minimum dimensionless ETR. Comparing the optimal result of the body with helm-shaped fin with that with annular fin, the radius of the centre fin and the distance between the heat source and the center of the body are decreased, and the ETR is decreased by 9.57%. | 10 | Thermal insulation constructal optimization for steel rolling reheating furnace wall based on entransy dissipation extremum principle显示文摘Analogizing with the heat conduction process, the entransy dissipation extremum principle for thermal insulation process can be described as: for a fixed boundary heat flux (heat loss) with certain constraints, the thermal insulation process is optimized when the entransy dissipation is maximized (maximum average temperature difference), while for a fixed boundary temperature, the thermal insulation process is optimized when the entransy dissipation is minimized (minimum average heat loss rate). Based on the constructal theory, the constructal optimizations of a single plane and cylindrical insulation layers as well as multi-layer insulation layers of the steel rolling reheating furnace walls are carried out for the fixed boundary temperatures and by taking the minimization of entransy dissipation rate as optimization objective. The optimal constructs of these three kinds of insulation structures with distributed thicknesses are obtained. The results show that compared with the insulation layers with uniform thicknesses and the optimal constructs of the insulation layers obtained by minimum heat loss rate, the optimal constructs of the insulation layers obtained by minimum entransy dissipation rate are obviously different from those of the former two insulation layers; the optimal constructs of the insulation layers obtained by minimum entransy dissipation rate can effectively reduce the average heat loss rates of the insulation layers, and can help to improve their global thermal insulation performances. | 14 | Constructal entransy dissipation rate minimization of a rectangular body with nonuniform heat generation显示文摘Based on construtal theory, a nonuniform heat generation problem in a rectangular body is investigated in this paper. Entransy dissipation rate(EDR) is taken as the optimization objective. The optimal body shapes with constant and variable widths of the high conductivity channel(HCC) are derived. For the rectangular first order assembly(RFOA) with constant cross-section HCC, the shape of the RFOA and width ratio of the HCCs are optimized, and the double minimum EDR is obtained. The heat transfer performance of the RFOA becomes worse when the nonuniform coefficient increases. For the RFOA with variable cross-section HCC, the EDR of the RFOA can be minimized for four times. Compared the optimal construct based on minimum EDR of the RFOA with that based on minimum maximum temperature difference, the shape of the former optimal construct is tubbier, and the average temperature difference is lower. | 15 | Generalized constructal optimization of strip laminar cooling process based on entransy theory显示文摘A strip laminar cooling process is investigated in this paper. Entransy theory and generalized constructal optimization are introduced into the optimization. Total water flow amount(WFA) in the laminar cooling zone(LCZ) and complex function are taken as the constraint and optimization objective, respectively. The entransy dissipation(ED) and maximum temperature different(MTD) of the strip are simultaneously considered in the complex function. WFA distributions of the headers in the LCZ are optimized. The effects of the total WFA, strip thickness and cooling water temperature on the optimal results are analyzed.The optimal cooling scheme is the eleventh cooling mode for the considered total 257 cooling schemes, and the complex function,ED and MTD of the strip are decreased by 11.59%, 5.59% and 17.58% compared with the initial cooling scheme, respectively.The total WFA and strip thickness have the obvious influences on the optimal cooing scheme, but the cooling water temperature has no influence in the parameter analysis range of this paper. | 17 | Verification and Improvement of the Ability of CFSv2 to Predict the Antarctic Oscillation in Boreal Spring显示文摘The boreal spring Antarctic Oscillation(AAO) has a significant impact on the spring and summer climate in China. This study evaluates the capability of the NCEP's Climate Forecast System, version 2(CFSv2), in predicting the boreal spring AAO for the period 1983–2015. The results indicate that CFSv2 has poor skill in predicting the spring AAO, failing to predict the zonally symmetric spatial pattern of the AAO, with an insignificant correlation of 0.02 between the predicted and observed AAO Index(AAOI). Considering the interannual increment approach can amplify the prediction signals, we firstly establish a dynamical–statistical model to improve the interannual increment of the AAOI(DY AAOI), with two predictors of CFSv2-forecasted concurrent spring sea surface temperatures and observed preceding autumn sea ice. This dynamical–statistical model demonstrates good capability in predicting DY AAOI, with a significant correlation coefficient of 0.58 between the observation and prediction during 1983–2015 in the two-year-out cross-validation. Then, we obtain an improved AAOI by adding the improved DY AAOI to the preceding observed AAOI. The improved AAOI shows a significant correlation coefficient of 0.45 with the observed AAOI during 1983–2015. Moreover, the unrealistic atmospheric response to March–April–May sea ice in CFSv2 may be the possible cause for the failure of CFSv2 to predict the AAO. | 18 | Cilastatin protects against imipenem-induced nephrotoxicity via inhibition of renal organic anion transporters(OATs)显示文摘Imipenem is a carbapenem antibiotic. However, Imipenem could not be marketed owing to its instability and nephrotoxicity until cilastatin, an inhibitor of renal dehydropeptidase-I(DHP-I),was developed. In present study, the potential roles of renal organic anion transporters(OATs) in alleviating the nephrotoxicity of imipenem by cilastatin were investigated in vitro and in rabbits. Our results indicated that imipenem and cilastatin were substrates of h OAT1 and h OAT3. Cilastatin inhibited h OAT1/3-mediated transport of imipenem with IC50 values comparable to the clinical concentration, suggesting the potential to cause a clinical drug–drug interaction(DDI). Moreover,imipenem exhibited h OAT1/3-dependent cytotoxicity, which was alleviated by cilastatin and probenecid. Furthermore, cilastatin and probenecid ameliorated imipenem-induced rabbit acute kidney injury, and reduced the renal secretion of imipenem. Cilastatin and probenecid inhibited intracellular accumulation of imipenem and sequentially decreased the nephrocyte toxicity in rabbit primary proximal tubule cells. Renal OATs, besides DHP-I, was also the target of interaction between imipenem and cilastatin, and contributed to the nephrotoxicity of imipenem. This therefore gives in part the explanation about the mechanism by which cilastatin protected against imipenem-induced nephrotoxicity. We optimize the weight by redefining the formulas of in-weight and ex-weight. In-weight formula is discussed under the free space propagation model. The definition of ex-weight is obtained by analyzing the relationship between RSS and distance under the log-distance path loss model. We evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm and compare it with the algorithm based on normalized weight. | 20 | The northern annular mode:More zonal symmetric than the southern annular mode显示文摘Fan (2007) recently documented the zonal asymmetry of the Antarctic oscillation (AAO) in the austral winter. In this research, the zonal asymmetry of the northern annular mode, or the Arctic oscillation (AO), in the interannual variability is studied for the boreal winter. It is shown that there is zonal asymmetry of the AO as well, similar to the case of the Antarctic oscillation (AAO). However, the zonal asymmetry of the AO is considerably weaker than that of the AAO. This is far beyond the speculation, since the zonal asymmetry of the geography is larger in the Northern Hemisphere than the Southern Hemisphere. The Western and Eastern Hemispheres portions of the AO are correlated at 0.54 for 1959― 1998, comparing with 0.23 for the case of the AAO. The authors also discussed the physical reason for this inter-hemispheric difference, and partly attributed it to the El Nio and Southern Oscillation (ENSO) cycle which may be represented by the SO index.
