| 1 | Review of small-bowel cleansing scales in capsule endoscopy: A panoply of choices显示文摘Evaluation of the quality of small-bowel cleansing is required to assess the reliability of findings in capsule endoscopy(CE). Moreover, consensus regarding the need of intestinal preparation for CE remains to be achieved. The presence of multiple grading scales for smallbowel preparation in CE, which are time-consuming and complicated, adds difficulty to the comparison of different small-bowel cleansing regimens and their application in clinical practice. Nowadays, a validated scale universally accepted for grading small-bowel cleansing is lacking. In fact, there are numerous grading systems with very different technical characteristics, namely, the parameters and the portion of the CE video that are analyzed, the objectivity of the analysis, the lesser or greater dependency on the operator, and the validation of the score. | 2 | Influence of coagulation mechanisms and floc formation on filterability显示文摘Minimizing particles in water is a key goal for improving drinking water quality and safety.The media filtration process,as the last step of the solid–liquid separation process,is largely influenced by the characteristics of flocs,which are formed and controlled within the coagulation process.In a laboratory-based study,the impacts of the physical characteristics of flocs formed using aluminum sulfate on the filtration treatment of two comparative water samples were investigated using a photometric dispersion analyzer and a filterability apparatus.In general,the optimum dosage for maximizing filterability was higher than that for minimizing turbidity under neutral p H conditions.For a monomeric aluminum-based coagulant,the charge neutralization mechanism produced better floc characteristics,including floc growth speed and size,than the sweep flocculation mechanism.In addition,the charge neutralization mechanism showed better performance compared to sweep flocculation in terms of DOC removal and floc filterability improvement for both waters,and showed superiority in turbidity removal only when the raw water had high turbidity.For the different mechanisms,the ways that floc characteristics impacted on floc filterability also differed.The low variation in floc size distribution obtained under the charge neutralization mechanism resulted in the flocs being amenable to removal by filtration processes.For the sweep flocculation mechanism,increasing the floc size improved the settling ability of flocs,resulting in higher filter efficiency. | Ruyuan Jiao Rolando Fabris Christopher W.K.Chow Mary Drikas John van Leeuwen Dongsheng Wang Zhizhen Xu | 2017 | Journal of Environmental Sciences2017,29,7: | 6 |
| 3 | Effect of human disturbance on the structure and regeneration of forests in the Nevado de Toluca National Park, Mexico显示文摘Sample plots were established in the principal forest types in the the Nevado de Toluca National Park, Mexico including those dominated by Pinus hartwegii, Abies religiosa, Quercus laurina and Alnus jorullensis. The vertical structure was defined by three strata in the coniferous forests and two strata in the broadleaved forests. Timber harvesting in Abies religiosa and Quercus laurina forests and fires generated by humans in Pinus hartwegii forests impeded the recruitment of saplings. Mature trees were also heavily impacted by logging in Pinus hartwegii forests. On the contrary, Alnus jorullensis forests were increasing due to the disturbance of Pinus and Quercus forests, as well abandoned crop lands within the park. A combination of logging, uncontrolled fire, and grazing appears to be compromising the recruitment of important tree species in this national park. These factors, together with human settlements, have also increased the proportion of early successional species. | 5 | Prediction of DOM removal of low specific UV absorbance surface waters using HPSEC combined with peak fitting显示文摘High performance size exclusion chromatography (HPSEC) is used in water quality research primarily to determine the molecular weight distribution of the dissolved organic matter (DOM), but by applying peak fitting to the chromatogram, this technique can also be used as a tool to model and predict DOM removal. Six low specific UV absorbance (SUVA) source waters were treated using coagulation with alum and both the source and treated water samples were analysed using HPSEC. By comparing the molecular weight profiles of the source and treated waters, it was established that several DOM components were not effectively removed by alum coagulation even after high dosage alum treatment. A peak-fitting technique was applied based on the concept of linking the character (molecular weight profile) of the recalcitrant organics in the treated water with those of the source water. This was then applied to predict DOM treatability by determining the areas of the peaks which were assigned to removable organics from the source water molecular weight profile after peak fitting, and this technique quantified the removable and non-removable organics. The prediction was compared with the actual dissolved organic carbon (DOC) removal determined from jar testing and showed good agreement, with variance between 2% and 10%. | 10 | Essential role of small bowel capsule endoscopy in reclassification of colonic inflammatory bowel disease type unclassified显示文摘AIM To evaluate the role of small bowel capsule endoscopy(SBCE) on the reclassification of colonic inflammatory bowel disease type unclassified(IBDU).METHODS We performed a multicenter, retrospective study including patients with IBDU undergoing SBCE, between 2002 and 2014. SBCE studies were reviewed and the inflammatory activity was evaluated by determining the Lewis score(LS). Inflammatory activity was considered significant and consistent with Crohn's disease(CD) when the LS ≥ 135. The definitive diagnosis during follow-up(minimum 12 mo following SBCE) was based on the combination of clinical, analytical, imaging, endoscopic and histological elements.RESULTS Thirty-six patients were included, 21 females(58%) with mean age at diagnosis of 33 ± 13(15-64) years. The mean follow-up time after the SBCE was 52 ± 41(12-156) mo. The SBCE revealed findings consistent with significant inflammatory activity in the small bowel(LS ≥ 135) in 9 patients(25%); in all of them the diagnosis of CD was confirmed during follow-up. In 27 patients(75%), the SBCE revealed no significant inflammatory activity(LS < 135); among these patients, the diagnosis of Ulcerative Colitis(UC) was established in 16 cases(59.3%), CD in 1 case(3.7%) and 10 patients(37%) maintained a diagnosis of IBDU during follow-up. A LS ≥ 135 at SBCE had a sensitivity = 90%, specificity = 100%, positive predictive value = 100% and negative predictive value = 94% for the diagnosis of CD.CONCLUSION SBCE proved to be fundamental in the reclassification of patients with IBDU. | 11 | Management of Helicobacter pylori infection in Latin America: A Delphi technique-based consensus显示文摘AIM: To optimize diagnosis and treatment guidelines for this geographic region, a panel of gastroenterologists, epidemiologists, and basic scientists carried out a structured evaluation of available literature.METHODS: Relevant questions were distributed among the experts, who generated draft statements for consideration by the entire panel. A modified three-round Delphi technique method was used to reach consensus. Critical input was also obtained from representatives of the concerned medical community. The quality of the evidence and level of recommendation supporting each statement was graded according to United States Preventive Services Task Force criteria.RESULTS: A group of ten experts was established. The survey included 15 open-ended questions that were distributed among the experts, who assessed the articles associated with each question. The levels of agreement achieved by the panel were 50% in the first round, 73.3% in the second round and 100% in the third round. | 20 | Demographic trends and climate over 35 years in the Barro Colorado 50 ha plot显示文摘Background:The first three censuses of the 50-ha plot at Barro Colorado Island spanned an unusually harsh dry season during the 1983 El Nino.By the early 1990 s,we had documented increases in tree mortality,tree growth,and large population fluctuations of many species during the 1982-1985 census interval.At the time,we asserted that increasing drought frequency would greatly affect the forest.With the benefit of five more censuses at Barro Colorado from 1995-2015,we can now put the 1980 conditions in a longer perspective and test the hypothesis that increasing droughtiness has continued to change the forest.Methods:A 50-ha forest plot on Barro Colorado Island was censused eight times,in 1982 and every five years since1985.All free-standing woody stems were measured,mapped,and identified In each census.Results:1) The period 1982-1992 included several extreme dry seasons,not just 1983,but since then there have been few such droughts.2) Dbh growth declined from a peak in the early 1980 s to its lowest in the early 1990 s.From 1995-2015 it increased slightly,but not returning to the initial peak.Nearly every species and all dbh categories followed the same pattern.3) The elevated stand-wide mortality rate of large trees during the 1982-1985 drought has not returned,and most individual species showed the same pattern of elevated mortality in the 1980 s followed by low and fairly stable mortality after 1990.4) Sapling mortality declined after 1985,but rose again in the late-90 s,so the 1980 s drought period no longer looks unusual.Mortality of individual species' saplings fluctuated erratically,including cases where mortality during the drought was lower than after.5) Population sizes of individual species fluctuated in all possible directions.Some species declined precipitously during the drought,then recovered,but others did not recover.Other species increased in abundance during the drought.Conclusions:Droughts of the 1980 s elevated tree growth and mortality at Barro Colorado,but since 1990,demographic rates have remained lower,paralleling a moderate climate with few severe droughts after 1990.Moisture-demanding species suffered during the drought,but many have since recovered.We do not know how often such drought periods recur.Moreover,many species' abundances fluctuated over 35 years with no known cause. | Richard Condit Rolando Pérez Suzanne Lao Salomón Aguilar Stephen P.
