| 1 | The Central Guizhou and Yi-chang uplifts, Upper Yangtze region,between Ordovician and Silurian显示文摘The Central Guizhou and Yichang Uplifts are present in central Guizhou to western Hubei. Biostrati-graphic evidences from more than 20 sections in 14 counties of this region provide the data about the duration of these uplifts. Although this duration differs from locality to locality, it is mainly from Ashgillian to Rhuddanian. The uplifts result from a horizontally driven movement to the South China Paleoplate from an uncertain block in southeast. | 2 | Principal aspects of the Ordovician biotic radiation显示文摘The Ordovician radiation is among the major bioevents in earth history that have drawn great attention from geologists all over the world, and there have been hundreds of publications treating various aspects of this radiation. The study of the event involves a broad spectrum of research fields and concerns many scientific questions. Many opinions and hypotheses have been proposed on the triggering and controlling factors of the radiation. Herein the authors critically review the study of the Ordovician radiation and dissect four principal aspects by synthesizing the studies over the past years: (1) relationships of the radiation to fossil clades, ecotypes, and environments, such as water depth, latitude, and climate; (2) the ecological structure and food webs of Ordovician marine organisms; (3) fossil records and true biodiversities; and (4) likely triggering and controlling factors of the Ordovician radiation. | 4 | Atmospheric nitrous oxide observations above the oceanic surface during CHINARE-18显示文摘The gas samples in the marine boundary layer were collected from the track for research ship Xuelong during the 18th Chinese Antarctic Research Expedition (CHINARE-18) and nitrous oxide measurements were made by HP5890ECD-GC in the laboratory. The results represent the shipboard N2O data set obtained within the lower troposphere with the average concentration of (313.5±2.6)nL*L-1 from 31°N to 69°S. The results showed a latitudinally weighted, mean interhemispheric difference of 0.61 nL*L-1. The latitudinal distribution of atmospheric N2O concentration was analyzed from northern midlatitudes to Southern Ocean around the Antarctic continent and it was showed that N2O concentration in the current confluences was higher than that in other oceanic areas. This indicated that strong N2O emissions occurred there. The longitudinal distribution of N2O concentrations in the Southern Ocean also showed similar situation. | 7 | Effects of Yulangsan polysaccharide on monoamine neurotransmitters, adenylate cyclase activity and brain-derived neurotrophic factor expression in a mouse model of depression induced by unpredictable chronic mild stress显示文摘The present study established a mouse model of depression induced by unpredictable chronic mild stress. The model mice were treated with Yulangsan polysaccharide (YLSPS; 150, 300 and 600 mg/kg) for 21 days, and compared with fluoxetine-treated and normal control groups. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, radioimmunity and immunohistochemical staining showed that following treatment with YLSPS (300 and 600 mg/kg), monoamine neurotransmitter levels, prefrontal cortex adenylate cyclase activity and hippocampal brain-derived neurotrophic factor expression were significantly elevated, and depression-like behaviors were improved. Open-field and novelty-suppressed feeding tests showed that mouse activity levels were increased and feeding latency was shortened following treatment. | 9 | Stimulation of gaseous phosphine production from Antarctic seabird guanos and ornithogenic soils显示文摘Matrix-bound phosphine(MBP) is a general term used to indicate non-gaseous reduced phosphorus compounds that are transformed into phosphine gas upon reaction with bases or acids.Antarctic seabird guanos and ornithogenic soils were used as materials to compare the different digestion methods for transforming matrix-bound phosphine into phosphine gas.The results demonstrated that more phosphine gas in most of Antarctic environmental materials was formed of matrix-bound phosphine by caustic digestion than by acidic digestion.The comparative study on different digestion methods also revealed that the fraction of MBP converted to gaseous phosphine during the digestion depended on the temperature.The optimal digestion temperature was close to 70℃ and the optimal digestion time was about 20 min.Acidic conditions were more favorable for the release of matrix-bound phosphine compared to the neutral conditions.A proper water dilution can increase the production and emission of phosphine from the Antarctic penguin guanos. | ZHU Renbin LIU Yashu SUN Jianjun SUN Liguang GENG Jinju | 2009 | Journal of Environmental Sciences2009,21,2: | 3 |
| 10 | Paleoecological associations of middle Llandovery (Silurian) corals from Huaying Mountain, eastern Sichuan Province显示文摘Corals are comparatively abundant in the upper member of the Baiyun'an Formation (upper Aeronian to lowerest Telychian, Llandovery, Silurian) of Huaying, eastern Sichuan Province, Southwest China. Three coral associations have been recognized, i.e., in ascending order, the Mesofavosites Association, the Dentilasma Association, and the Paraceriaster Association. The Mesofavosites Association occurs at horizons indicating a shallow and high-energy environment. It is dominated by large favositids accompanied by a few broken pieces of halysitids and small solitary rugose corals. The Dentilasma Association has a pretty high coral diversity, dominated by the solitary rugose coral Dentilasma meitanense, together with some subordinative heliolitids and favositids. The sedimentary evidence shows that this association might live in a quiet and nutritive shallow water environment. The Paraceriaster Association yields in the grayish green calcareous mudstone indicating a comparatively deep water environment. Systematically it contains abundant fasciculate Paraceriaster micropora and a few favositids. | 11 | Potential methane and nitrous oxide production and respiration rates from penguin and seal colony tundra soils during freezing–thawing cycles under different water contents in coastal Antarctica显示文摘In coastal Antarctica, frequent freezing–thawing cycles(FTCs) and changes to the hydrological conditions may affect methane(CH_4) and nitrous oxide(N_2O) production and respiration rates in tundra soils, which are difficult to observe in situ. Tundra soils including ornithogenic tundra soil(OAS), seal colony soil(SCS) and emperor penguin colony soil(EPS) were collected. In laboratory, we investigated the effects of FTCs and water addition on potential N_2O and CH_4 production and respiration rates in the soils. The CH_4 fluxes from OAS and SCS were much less than that from EPS. Meanwhile, the N_2O fluxes from OAS and EPS were much less than that from SCS. The N_2O production rates from all soils were extremely low during freezing, but rapidly increased following thawing. In all cases, FTC also induced considerably enhanced soil respiration, indicating that soil respiration response was sensitive to the FTCs. The highest cumulative rates of CH_4, N_2O and CO_2 were 59.5 mg CH_4-C·kg^(-1) in EPS, 6268.8 μg N_2O-N·kg^(-1) in SCS and 3522.1 mg CO_2-C·kg^(-1) in OAS. Soil water addition had no significant effects on CH_4 production and respiration rates, but it could reduce N_2O production in OAS and EPS, and it stimulated N_2O production in SCS. Overall, CH_4 and N_2O production rates showed a trade-off relationship during the three FTCs. | 12 | Ecological responses of typical Antarctic marine organisms to climate change and anthropogenic impacts显示文摘To improve our understanding and ability to predict biological responses to global climate change, it is important to be able to distinguish the influences of natural forcing from anthropogenic impacts. In the ice-free areas of Antarctica, lake and terrestrial sediments that contain penguin guanos, seal excrement and other biological remains provide natural archives of ecological, geological and climatic information that range from hundreds to thousands of years old. Our review focuses on the paleoecology of typical Antarctic marine organisms(penguins, seals and Antarctic krill) and their responses to climate change and human activities over centennial and millennial timescales. | 13 | Alkaline phosphatase activity in ornithogenic soils in polar tundra显示文摘Phosphatase plays an important role in the microbial liberation of phosphorus in soil systems.In this study,alkaline phosphatase activity (APA) was investigated from tundra ornithogenic soil profiles in Antarctica and Arctic.The organic carbon (TOC),total nitrogen (TN),and phosphorus fractions and pH were also analyzed in these soils.The correlation between APA and soil chemical properties is discussed.In almost all the soil profiles,APA showed the same variation patterns.The maximum APA appeared in the surface layers,and decreased with soil depth.The APA ranged from 1.00 ppm to 1 403.5 ppm with an average of approximately 408.3 ppm.The APA showed a significant positive correlation with TOC (r =0.70,p <0.001),TN (r =0.43,p =0.002),total phosphorus (r =0.39,p <0.05)and inorganic phosphorus (r =0.40,p =0.037),indicating that they were predominant factors affecting APA in the polar tundra soils.In addition,APA showed a significant negative correlation with Cu and Zn concentrations in the soils,indicating that Cu and Zn may inhibit APA.Our results showed that APA could be used as an important indicator for soil fertility in polar tundra ecosystems. | MA DaWei ZHU RenBin DING Wei SUN JianJun LIU YaShu SUN LiGuang | 2011 | Advances in Polar Science2011,22,2: | 2 |
