1Opposition-Based Firefly Algorithm for Earth Slope Stability Evaluation显示文摘This paper introduces a new approach of firefly algorithm based on opposition-based learning(OBFA) to enhance the global search ability of the original algorithm. The new algorithm employs opposition based learning concept to generate initial population and also updating agents' positions. The proposed OBFA is applied for minimization of the factor of safety and search for critical failure surface in slope stability analysis. 2Modified particle swarm optimization for optimum design of spread footing and retaining wall显示文摘This paper deals with the economically optimized design and sensitivity of two of the most widely used systems in geotechnical engineering: spread footing and retaining wall. Several recent advanced optimization methods have been developed, but very few of these methods have been applied to geotechnical problems. The current research develops a modified particle swarm optimization (MPSO) approach to obtain the optimum design of spread footing and retaining wall. The algorithm handles the problem-specific constraints using a penalty function approach. The optimization procedure controls all geotechnical and structural design constraints while reducing the overall cost of the structures. To verify the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed algorithm, three case studies of spread footing and retaining wall are illustrated. Comparison of the results of the present method, standard PSO, and other selected methods employed in previous studies shows the reliability and accuracy of the algorithm. 3Analysing the relationship between drought and soil erosion using vegetation health index and RUSLE models in Godavari middle sub-basin,India显示文摘Drought is a natural phenomenon posing severe implications for soil,groundwater and agricultural yield.It has been recognized as one of the most pervasive global change drivers to affect the soil.Soil being a weakly renewable resource takes a long time to form,but it takes no time to degrade.However,the response of soil to drought conditions as soil loss is not manifested in the existing literature.Thus,this study makes a concerted effort to analyze the relationship between drought conditions and soil erosion in the middle sub-basin of the Godavari River in India.MODIS remote sensing data was utilized for driving drought indices during 2000-2019.Firstly,we constricted Temperature condition index(TCI)and Vegetation Condition Index(VCI)from Land Surface Temperature(LST)and Enhanced Vegetation Index(EVI)derived from MODIS data.TCI and VCI were then integrated to determine the Vegetation Health Index(VHI).Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation(RUSLE)was utilized for estimating soil loss.The relationship between drought condition and vegetation was ascertained using the Pearson correlation.Most of the northern and southern watersheds experienced severe drought condition in the sub-basin during2000-2019.The mean frequency of the drought occurrence was 7.95 months.The average soil erosion in the sub-basin was estimated to be 9.88 t ha^(-1)year^(-1).A positive relationship was observed between drought indices and soil erosion values(r value being 0.35).However,wide variations were observed in the distribution of spatial correlation.Among various factors,the slope length and steepness were found to be the main drivers of soil erosion in the sub-basin.Thus,the study calls for policy measures to lessen the impact of drought and soil erosion.Md Masroor Haroon Sajjad Sufia Rehman Roshani Singh Md Hibjur Rahaman Mehebub Sahana Raihan Ahmed Ram Avtar 2022Geoscience Frontiers2022,13,2:4
4Maize orthologs of rice GS5 and their transregulator are associated with kernel development显示文摘Genome information from model species such as rice can assist in the cloning of genes in a complex genome,such as maize.Here,we identified a maize ortholog of rice GS5 that contributes to kernel development in maize.The genomewide association analysis of the expression levels of ZmGS5,and 15 of its 26 paralogs,identified a trans-regulator on chromosome 7,which was a BAKi-like gene.This gene that we named as ZmBAK1-7 could regulate the expression of ZmGS5 and three of the paralogs.Candidate-gene association analyses revealed that these five genes were associated with maize kernel development-related traits.Linkage analyses also detected that ZmGSs and ZmBAK1-7 co-localized with mapped QTLs.A transgenic analysis of ZmGS5 in Arabidopsis thaliana L.showed a significant increase in seed weight and cell number,suggesting that ZmGS5 may have a conserved function among different plant species that affects seed development.Jie Liu Min Deng Huan Guo Sharif Raihan Jingyun Luo Yuancheng Xu Xiaofei Dong Jianbing Yan 2015Journal of Integrative Plant Biology2015,57,11:4
5A new hybrid algorithm for global optimization and slope stability evaluation显示文摘A new hybrid optimization algorithm was presented by integrating the gravitational search algorithm(GSA)with the sequential quadratic programming(SQP),namely GSA-SQP,for solving global optimization problems and minimization of factor of safety in slope stability analysis.The new algorithm combines the global exploration ability of the GSA to converge rapidly to a near optimum solution.In addition,it uses the accurate local exploitation ability of the SQP to accelerate the search process and find an accurate solution.A set of five well-known benchmark optimization problems was used to validate the performance of the GSA-SQP as a global optimization algorithm and facilitate comparison with the classical GSA.In addition,the effectiveness of the proposed method for slope stability analysis was investigated using three case studies of slope stability problems from the literature.The factor of safety of earth slopes was evaluated using the Morgenstern–Price method.The numerical experiments demonstrate that the hybrid algorithm converges faster to a significantly more accurate final solution for a variety of benchmark test functions and slope stability problems.Taha Mohd Raihan Khajehzadeh Mohammad Eslami Mahdiyeh 2013Journal of Central South University2013,20,11:3
6Influence of axial load on the lateral pile groups response in cohesionless and cohesive soil显示文摘The lateral response of single and group of piles under simultaneous vertical and lateral loads has been analyzed using a 3D finite element approach. The response in this assessment considered lateral pile displacement and lateral soil resistance and corresponding p-y curve. As a result, modified p-y curves for lateral single pile response were improved with respect to the influence of increasing axial load intensities. The improved plots can be used for lateral loaded pile design and to produce the group action design p-multiplier curves and equations. The effect of load combination on the lateral pile group response was performed on three pile group configurations (i.e., 2 × 1, 2 × 2 and 3 × 2) with four pile spacings (i.e., s = 2D, 4D, 6D and 8D). As a result, design curves were developed and applied on the actual case studies and similar expected cases for assessment of pile group behavior using improved p-multiplier. A design equation was derived from predicted design curves to be used in the evaluation of the lateral pile group action taking into account the effect of axial load intensities. It was found that the group interaction effect led to reduced lateral resistance for the pile in the group relative to that for the single pile in case of pure lateral load. While, in case of simultaneous combined loads, large axial load intensities (i.e., more than 6H, where H is lateral load values) will have an increase inp-multiplier by approximately 100% and will consequently contribute to greater group piles capacities.Jasim M.
